New guidelines issued for Umrah pilgrims safety in last 10 days of Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of the Interior has issued updated guidelines for the safety and security of pilgrims and worshippers in Makkah and Madinah during the last ten days of Ramzan, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has strengthened its preparations and increased security, health, emergency and volunteering efforts to provide services that help pilgrims easily perform their rituals during the holy month.

    Here are the guidelines

    • Pilgrims can use public buses from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, or buses from the car park in Makkah Al-Mukarramah to reach the Grand Mosque.
    • Pilgrims can also use taxis, as well as trains from Al Haramain Station from King Abdulaziz International Airport to Al Rusaifa Station in Makkah Al Mukarramah.
    • Pilgrims can walk if they live in the central area or next to the Grand Mosque, or they can take a private car which must be driven by non-Umrah pilgrims.
    • Non-Umrah pilgrims are allowed to stay in the parking lot located at the beginning of Makkah Al-Mukarramah. Pilgrims can use public transportation to reach the Grand Mosque.
    • The General Syndicate of Cars also provides a free public transportation service at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to transport Umrah pilgrims to Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
    • Inside the Grand Mosque, pilgrims must abide by the instructions set by the security services.
    • The green light on the main gates means that pilgrims can enter through that gate as there is room for pilgrims to pray, but a red light indicates the entry is denied due to all sites being full.
    • Collecting donations is prohibited in the Grand Mosque, adding that pilgrims are not allowed to smoke, beg, or engage in commercial activities such as buying and selling.

Safety of Muslim women is priority for Modi govt, claims BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is campaigning across the country to connect with minority communities, especially the Muslim community, has claimed that the safety of Muslim women is the priority for the Narendra Modi-led Central government.

In an attempt to convey the message that the government has done a big and historic work of providing equal rights and security to Muslim women by declaring triple talaq illegal through Parliament, the saffron party on Tuesday took to its Twitter account depicting the entire sequence of events declaring the practice as illegal.

The video depicts the reactions of Muslim women along with the passing of the motion in the Rajya Sabha to declare triple talaq as illegal and the speech delivered by the Prime Minister from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Claiming to have empowered and protected Muslim women, the BJP wrote in a second tweet: “Triple Talaq law empowers and protects Muslim women!”

The Triple Talaq Bill was passed in Parliament on July 30, 2019 making it illegal.

  • Mehrauli murder: Delhi court directs authorities to ensure Poonawala’s safety

Mehrauli murder: Delhi court directs authorities to ensure Poonawala’s safety

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Counsel of Aaftab Amin Poonawala, who is accused of strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar to death, chopping her body into several pieces, storing them in a fridge before disposing of them in a forest over three months, on Friday complained in court that his client was “manhandled” during his production in court.

As Additional Sessions Judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar heard the arguments on charges against the accused, she also directed the authorities concerned to ensure the safety of Poonawala.

“Lock-up in charge, Saket Court, as well as jail superintendent, are directed to ensure that the accused is produced safely during court productions,” she said.

The Delhi Police had earlier told the court that incriminating circumstances are clearly revealed through reliable and clinching evidence and they form a chain of events.

Poonawala has been booked for the offences under the Indian Penal Code Sections 302 and 201 for murder and causing disappearance of evidence of offence, respectively.

The accused’s counsel, on Friday, contended that Section 201 can be invoked only against the person who screens the offender and not against the person accused of the main offence.

Appearing for Police, Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad argued that he would place on record judgements against the argument.

During the hearing, victim’s father Vikas Walkar had prayed the court for supply of audio-video evidence attached with the charge sheet.

The SPP had opposed the request, saying that dissemination of such material to media would cause prejudice to the accused.

If it is supplied, then the condition of no dissemination to anyone should be imposed, he said.

The court has listed the matter for further proceedings on April 3.

SPP Prasad had earlier submitted that the accused is a trained chef from Taj Hotel and is aware of preserving flesh.

Poonawala had also ordered dry ice, agarbatti etc. after killing Shraddha Walker, the police had said.

It was added by the police that after committing the crime, he got into a new relationship and gave a ring to his new girlfriend.

On February 21, a city court had sent the case to the sessions court for initiation of trial proceedings.

Metropolitan magistrate Aviral Shukla had said: “Scrutiny of documents is complete… Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code is exclusively triable by sessions court.”

The court had on February 7 taken cognisance of the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police against Poonawala which ran over 6,000 pages.

  • Education on road safety key to improving safety standards in India: Gadkari

Education on road safety key to improving safety standards in India: Gadkari

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, on Tuesday sought the cooperation of business women and corporate in inculcating a culture of road safety among road users in the country.

“Apart from road engineering, the most important factor for improving road safety in the country is to change human behaviour that violates road rules. Till human behaviour changes, rules won’t be followed. The government alone cannot do this, we need private partnerships,” Gadkari said while speaking at an event organised by the Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO).

“In India, five lakh accidents take place each year resulting in 1.5 lakh deaths out of which 60 per cent are youth in the age group of 18-34 years. Women entrepreneurs can help promote road safety at school level as well as teach their employees and their families imbibe a culture of road safety and use their logistics and carriers to propagate the message of education on road safety and enforcement of rules, which are key to improve safety standards in India,” Gadkari said.

“I see knowledge as power. I also see waste as wealth. Appropriate technology is needed to see the end results. Need-based research should be of primary importance in order to be successful in whatever you do. One should think ahead, because green hydrogen is the fuel of the future. Petrol is becoming precious and we need alternative fuels. I think of a dozen alternative fuels such as biodiesel, natural gas, ethanol, methane, propane, electricity and hydrogen, which are currently under development or in production to power vehicles of the future and some are even available,” the minister said.

“Women should also work towards improving ecology and environment. The Ministry of Road Transport in a bid to improve air quality in the national capital is developing a six-lane Urban Extension Road (UER) II which will be the capital’s third Ring Road. It is likely to be operational by the end of this year,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Jayanti Dalmia, National President, FLO, said, “FLO with 19 chapters and 9,000 members across India represents women entrepreneurs and professionals through our mandate of empowering them and equipping them with skills and capacities to become equal contributors to the Indian economy.”

  • Musk attacking us as he is stressed about AI safety: OpenAI CEO

Musk attacking us as he is stressed about AI safety: OpenAI CEO

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hit back at Twitter CEO Elon Musk for criticising his for-profit company which is now owned by Microsoft.

During the ‘On With Kara Swisher’ podcast, Altman said OpenAI is “independent” from Microsoft.

Altman said Musk has been critical of OpenAI on Twitter.

“Elon Musk is obviously attacking us,” he noted.

“To say a positive thing about Elon, I think he really does care about a good future with artificial general intelligence (AGI). I mean, he’s a jerk, whatever else you want to say about him. But he has a style that is not a style that I’d want to have for myself,” Altman was quoted as saying.

“But I think he does really care, and he is feeling very stressed about what the future’s going to look like for humanity,” the OpenAI CEO added.

Musk tried to take control of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in early 2018 but Altman and OpenAI’s other founders rejected Musk’s proposal.

Musk later walked away from the company and reneged on a massive planned donation, according to Semafor.

Musk told Altman that he believed the “venture had fallen fatally behind Google”.

When Musk walked away, he resigned from its board in 2018 citing a conflict of interest with his work at Tesla.

According to the Semafor report, he also reneged on a promise to supply $1 billion in funding, contributing only $100 million before he walked.

In March, 2019, OpenAI announced it was creating a for-profit entity so that it could raise enough money to pay for the compute power.

Less than six months later, Microsoft infused $1 billion in OpenAI, and the rest is history.

  • Federal board allows rail merger, amid fresh questions about safety

Federal board allows rail merger, amid fresh questions about safety

    [ad_1]

    ap23073698016395

STB chair Martin Oberman said the board approved the merger because “on balance the merger of these two railroads will benefit the American economy, and will be an improvement for all citizens in terms of safety and the environment.” He also argued that the bigger entity will be more competitive against larger railroads. He also suggested that in approving the merger, the board was constrained by the laws Congress has enacted, saying their decision “has to be measured against the backdrop of what is our congressional mandate.”

In a sign of the board’s normally-sleepy stature, Oberman observed that this was the board’s first press conference in recent memory — maybe ever.

Wednesday’s decision is a discordant note in a time when the Biden administration has sought to combat consolidation across a swath of industries ranging from technology giants to airlines. However, the board is not strictly an arm of the administration, but rather helmed by presidential appointees from both parties who are confirmed by the Senate.

A White House official noted that the STB is an independent agency and said the White House is “currently reviewing the text of their decision.”

Shortly after the STB’s announcement, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who sits on the Senate committee that oversees railroads, said the decision “needs to be scrutinized.”

The five-member board was not unanimous in its decision — board member Robert Primus dissented, saying he was concerned that the merger increases consolidation, risks service disruptions and could harm communities along the path of the railroad. “Because these detriments to the public interest outweigh the expected benefits, I dissent,” he said.

Erik Peinert, research manager at the progressive anti-monopoly group American Economic Liberties Project, called the decision “disgraceful” and said it “sets the stage for future disasters like East Palestine and will likely lead to railroad staffing cuts, higher cargo loads, and other profit-driven safety shortcuts.”

“Nothing in the history of rail consolidation suggests it is a good idea,” he added.

The Surface Transportation Board placed some conditions on the merger, including a seven-year period of oversight during which certain decisions involving competition, customer service and other transit agencies or Amtrak will have extra scrutiny, along with extensive data reporting requirements intended to help protect competition.

A decision has been expected since the board released the environmental impact statement earlier this year finding that the merger would have minimal impact other than increased train noise in some communities, and that while increased volumes would also mean more hazardous materials spills, the risk on any specific segment “would continue to be low” and any release “would be contained quickly.”

Chicago-area lawmakers asked STB to delay its decision, saying the environmental report cited faulty statistics provided by Canadian Pacific, while the region’s commuter railroad, Metra, predicted a greater increase in freight rail traffic than CP did.

Rep. Katie Porter and Sen. Elizabeth Warren also opposed the merger out of concern that it would mean even more consolidation in an industry that’s already controlled by just a handful of companies. On the other hand, four lawmakers from Kansas and Missouri, including House Transportation Chair Sam Graves, last year urged STB to approve the merger.

The STB has increased oversight over the freight railroads over the last year in an attempt to force better service for customers and to help rebuild the railroad workforce, which has been hollowed out over the last eight years as the industry has cut costs through layoffs.

Josh Sisco and Kayla Guo contributed to this report.
