SRINAGAR: The major shrines and Masjids in Srinagar witnessed huge rush of devotees during the congregational Friday prayers while authorities claimed that thousands of people offered prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta and Dargah Hazratbal shrine.
Srinagar police in a tweet informed that the congregational prayers concluded peacefully and said that 18,000 people offered Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid Nowhatta while 50,000 people attended prayers at Dargah Hazratbal.
“Friday afternoon Prayers on the first Friday of the holy month of Ramzan concluded peacefully in all the mosques of Srinagar. Below are pictures from Jamia Masjid, nowhatta & Hazratbal Dargah wherein around 18,000 & 50,000 devotees attended Friday prayers respectively,” Srinagar Police tweeted.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Darood-o-Azkar reverberated the shrines and Masjids across the Valley.
At Jamia Masjid Srinagar and Dargah Hazratbal shrine, the religious clerics highlighted the teachings of Islam and also the importance of the holy month Ramadan.
Notably, Waqf Board, Jammu & Kashmir has made special arrangements this year at Hazratbal shrine where the tents in large numbers have been erected for the devotees in the lawns so that they will not face any hardships during rains or hot weather conditions.
Outside the shrine, the local and non-local business establishments had installed the carts and were seen selling the Kashmir traditional food stuff.

Srinagar, Mar 23: Markets across the valley witnessed a good rush on Thursday with the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, while people were busy stocking up on fruits and dates.
Sajad Ahmad, a Srinagar resident told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that breaking the fast with dates is Sunnah (a Prophetic way) and Muslims across the world including Kashmir consume dates in this holy month in large quantities. “Apart from Sunnah, dates have health benefits,” he said.
Parvez Ahmad, a wholesale and retail dealer of dates in Srinagar said this year they have 50 to 60 varieties of dates on display, mostly Saudi dates.
“The prices of dates range from Rs 250 to Rs 1,500 per kg, and the majority of the dates in the market are from Saudi Arabia,” he said, adding, “We also have dates from other countries.”
Parvez said there is a steep hike in rates compared to last year but that they are anticipating good sales as the holy month progresses. “Ideally, the first 10 to 15 days of the holy month record good sale of dates as people also purchase full boxes to make arrangements for Iftaars at Masjids and Darul-Ulooms. We also make special baskets of dates as gift packs,” he said.
Another date seller in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk area said this year’s sales are comparatively low due to rising prices. “But we are hopeful of making more sales as the month progresses,” he said—(KNO)
FRANKFURT — Swiss banking giant UBS will buy the country’s second-largest bank Credit Suisse in a deal that will come as a relief to financial markets in Europe and across the world.
UBS said in a statement that the total price is 3 billion Swiss francs, or about $3.25 billion, in UBS shares.
The deal was pushed through in an effort to avoid further turmoil in global banking following the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and another regional lender in the U.S.
“With the takeover of Credit Suisse by UBS, a solution has been found to secure financial stability and protect the Swiss economy in this exceptional situation,” the Swiss National Bank said in a separate statement, noting that the deal was made possible with the support of the Swiss federal government, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA and the Swiss National Bank.
The central bank added that UBS and Credit Suisse can obtain a liquidity assistance loan of up to 100 billion francs.
Highlighting the urgency of securing a deal for the bank before markets open on Monday, Swiss authorities adjusted laws to allow further provision of liquidity by the Swiss central bank, while the government agreed to provide additional guarantees.
The expeditious rescue of Credit Suisse was welcomed by the European Central Bank as well as the Federal Reserve in the U.S.
The “swift action” by the Swiss authorities “are instrumental for restoring orderly market conditions and ensuring financial stability,” ECB President Christine Lagarde said in a statement.
The 167-year-old Credit Suisse has been involved in a series of scandals that have undermined the confidence of investors and clients. It has thus found itself in the eye of the storm when the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank sparked fears of a banking crisis.

Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott, who has criticized Buttigieg for waiting three weeks to visit the site of the Feb. 3 accident, tweeting last week that Buttigieg should “show up, do your job and stop playing politics.”
Asked on Tuesday what Congress should do after the Ohio derailment, Scott would only say that lawmakers should “start doing our oversight and stop approving people that don’t know how to do the job.”
Other Republicans say they want to wait until the National Transportation Safety Board, the independent agency probing the accident, finishes its work. That could take up to 18 months.
“A lot of people have a lot of ideas right now,” Nehls told POLITICO. “The NTSB had their preliminary report. There’ll be more information coming.”
One of DOT’s requests for Congress is an increase in the maximum penalties to railroads for safety violations — an idea Nehls dismissed, instead praising the industry’s safety record.
“The rail industry has a very high success rate of moving hazardous material — to the point of 99-percent-plus,” Nehls said. “Let’s not have more burdensome regulations and all this other stuff.”
Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.), who served as top Republican on the rail panel before the House flipped control, agreed on waiting for the experts to weigh in “before we start speculating on what legislative fixes might be offered, if it’s necessary, and if so what would they be.”
“Probably a little premature at this point,” he added.
And Graves told Fox News Digital on Feb. 16 that he wants to “fully understand the facts involved” before considering legislation, noting that the NTSB is still investigating. Then, he said, “Congress can consider what steps may be necessary.”
Democrats on the whole have been much swifter to call for changes — including Buttigieg, who has pledged to tighten the way his agency regulates trains, but has also asked Congress to increase the $225,455 cap on fines his agency can level and to strengthen braking and tank car requirements.
A few Republicans are showing signs they’re willing to join Democrats sooner rather than later.
Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance, for example, is working with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) on a rail-safety bill expected to be out soon. Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who has called for Buttigieg’s resignation over the derailment, has said he’s interested in teaming up on their bill.
“There’s a Vance-Sherrod Brown bill that we’re looking at, that we’re very interested in maybe being a part of,” Rubio said in an interview Tuesday.
Brown said the bill he’s working on will likely include provisions including setting minimum requirements for how many employees should be on board a train, along with train length, speed limits and notifications to states when hazardous materials are on their way, he told reporters Tuesday.
He noted that the 150-car train that derailed in East Palestine, carrying hazardous chemicals such as vinyl chloride, had “one trainee and two staff people” aboard when the disaster occurred.
A Brown-Vance team-up may seem to some like an odd couple pairing, but Rubio and Vance previously wrote to Buttigieg asking whether a two-person crew is adequate. Democrats have pushed to enshrine a two-person minimum crew in federal regulations, a move opposed by the railroad industry and, historically, most Republicans. The Trump administration backed the railroad industry when it mothballed a rule that would have mandated at least two crewmembers on board every train. That rule had originally been proposed under the Obama administration.
“Republicans have seen what’s happened, too,” Brown said, explaining the bipartisan interest he’s seen so far. “The rail companies have done pretty effective lobbying in keeping Congress and the administration, the [Federal Railroad Administration] and others from doing what we ought to be doing.”
Indeed, Rubio said Tuesday that the freight rail industry’s “push for efficiency — the desire to put more cargo, longer lines, longer stretches and less people” — creates vulnerabilities.
“We have not just dangerous but important cargo being transported on longer [trains] with less people,” he said.
Other legislation has been floated in the House. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.), whose district includes the area affected by the Ohio spill, has introduced a bill along with a dozen other Democrats that seeks to include more types of trains under stricter laws governing hazardous materials transport. That means more types of materials would be subject to tougher safety requirements such as slower speeds, newer rail cars and better braking equipment.
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will hold a hearing on the derailment, featuring the Environmental Protection Agency, top committee Republican Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said Tuesday. She said the Senate Commerce Committee would also hold a hearing, though as yet nothing has been scheduled.
Like many of her GOP colleagues, Capito didn’t have many positive words for the Biden administration.
The federal response to the derailment “has been, I think, miserable to watch,” she said.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had sounded a similar theme Monday, accusing Buttigieg of seeming “more interested in pursuing press coverage for woke initiatives and climate nonsense than in attending to the basic elements of his day job.”
But so far, McConnell hasn’t said what, if any, legislation he thinks is needed to make rail safer.
Buttigieg shot back Tuesday.
“The freight rail industry has wielded a lot of power here in Washington,” he said on CNN. “I would love to see Leader McConnell join us in standing up to them.”

Srinagar, Feb 24: Glass Igloos in the middle of snow Gulmarg has become a major attraction for visitors.
The glass igloos made by Kolahoi Green Heights hotel of Gulmarg are being visited by hundreds of locals and tourists every day. They enjoy lunch, tea and love to take selfies.
Ishfaq Ahmad, an assistant Manager at the hotel told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that they had made snow igloos in the last two years but it was taking time in making it but this year snowfall was late and there wasn’t so much left to make snow igloo.
“We are always trying to bring new concepts to Gulmarg to promote winter tourism, and this year we have launched an igloo glass concept for a restaurant that is a major tourist attraction currently,“ he said.
“We have kept three igloos in the first phase and three in premises of the hotel. There is positive response and this will remain available throughout the year,” Ishfaq said.
Celebrations, candle light dinners and other things were not possible in hotels but igloos are being booked continuously for candle light dinner and other celebrations purposes as well, he said.
Ishfaq said that it is the concept of Finland and first time in Asia and has kept heating arrangements as well.
It is a completely different experience sitting in an igloo.
Even the guests who have in house bookings also want to spend some time in these igloos to have lunch, dinner or tea, he said.
An igloo can have six guests at a time and guests are given around a minimum one hour to enjoy and these igloos are pre-booked, he said.
He said that Syed Waseem Shah is behind the concept and creation of these Igloos.
Mostly domestic tourists are booking these igloos to have a unique experience, he said—(KNO)
