DeSantis continues broadsides against the media ahead of likely 2024 run

    [ad_1]

    desantis law enforcement 77294

“The idea that they would create narratives that are contrary to discovering facts, I don’t know that was the standard,” DeSantis said. “Now it seems you pursue the narrative, you’re trying to advance the narrative and trying to get the clicks, and the fact checking and contrary facts has just fallen by the wayside.”

DeSantis has long had a contentious relationship with the media since he became Florida governor in 2019. He rarely gives interviews to major media outlets and regularly criticizes outlets like CNN and his former press secretary, Christina Pushaw, was well-known for singling out reporters on Twitter for ridicule. The Republican governor, who’s widely believed to be staging a campaign to unseat Democrat President Joe Biden in 2024, even unsuccessfully pushed the Legislature to approve a law challenging First Amendment protections during last year’s legislative session, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

DeSantis’ criticism of the media is similar to those of former President Donald Trump, who regularly condemned media outlets like the Washington Post and the New York Times. In 2018, Trump also suggested that he’d try to change libel laws to make it easier to sue news organizations.

During Tuesday’s discussion, DeSantis didn’t detail any specific laws he wanted enacted but pressed Florida legislators to “protect” Floridians.

“When the media attacks me, I have a platform to fight back. When they attack everyday citizens, these individuals don’t have the adequate recourses to fight back,” he said. “It would contribute to an increase in ethics in the media and everything if they knew that if you smeared somebody, it’s false and you didn’t do your homework then you have to be held accountable for that.”

Carson Holloway, a scholar from the conservative think tank the Claremont Institute, also said during the discussion that the Supreme Court’s legal precedents that govern most defamation lawsuits makes libel claims against media companies by public figures nearly impossible to win.

“This is distorting our politics in fundamental ways,” Holloway said. “It really discombobulates our ability to govern ourselves.”

Sandmann, who became embroiled in a social media firestorm after a video was posted of him smiling in front of a Native American beating a drum at the National Mall, said he thought nothing of the video until he saw it on social media as he boarded a bus back to Kentucky. National media outlets reported that the video showed Sandmann blocking the path of Native American, but Sandmann, who was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat, claimed he was trying to stay motionless to calm the situation at the event.

“In my case I didn’t have a reputation to ruin — I hadn’t started any sort of professional career and I haven’t even started my life,” Sandmann said. “But they predetermined how that would happen.”

Libertarian journalist Michael C. Moynihan told Sandmann his “death sentence” was because he wore a MAGA hat indicating his support for Trump.

Barbara Petersen, executive director of the Florida Center for Government Accountability, said during a phone interview that the Ivy League-educated DeSantis is smart enough to understand why the country’s forefathers believed the press was so important.

“It’s the only profession protected by the Constitution,” Petersen said. “Why is he so hot and bothered over this?”

Libby Locke, who was one of the lawyers representing Dominion Voting Systems, said the media is no longer doing the job that the public expects of it, especially with the growing use of anonymous sources. The voting systems company sued some of Trump’s biggest supporters, including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, for defamation after the defendants allegedly made false statements about Dominion.

“The thumb is on the scale in favor of the press,” Locke said. “Media defense lawyers come in and say First Amendment, and judges get very nervous about applying the law in a way that is favorable or even handed to a defamation plaintiff, and lives are ruined as a result.”

Pelosi endorses Schiff in California Senate race — if Feinstein doesn’t run

    [ad_1]

Rep. Nancy Peolsi on Thursday endorsed Rep. Adam Schiff in California’s high-profile Senate primary, backing the former House Intelligence Committee chair but only on the condition that Sen. Dianne Feinstein opts not to run again.

“If Senator Feinstein decides to seek re-election, she has my whole-hearted support. If she decides not to run, I will be supporting House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, who knows well the nexus between a strong Democracy and a strong economy,” Pelosi (D-Calif.), a two-time speaker of the House who stepped down from leadership earlier this year, said in an email. “In his service in the House, he has focused on strengthening our Democracy with justice and on building an economy that works for all.”

A spokesperson for Feinstein did not immediately return an email seeking comment on Pelosi’s announcement.

  • Mitch Daniels opts against a run for the Senate

Mitch Daniels opts against a run for the Senate

    [ad_1]

“Maybe I can find ways to contribute that do not involve holding elective office. If not, there is so much more to life,” Daniels added. “People obsessed with politics or driven by personal ambition sometimes have difficulty understanding those who are neither.”

Daniels’ decision marks the end of a monthslong flirtation with a return to electoral politics after a stint as president of Purdue University. And it limits the likelihood of a costly and messy Republican primary, one that would have pitted a conservative fixture of the Reagan era against a sharp-elbowed MAGA upstart in Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who has announced his candidacy for the Senate.

Senate Republicans had been eager to avoid a contested primary for what should be a safe red seat. And with Daniels out, there was little appetite for Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) or another Indiana Republican to get in the race with so many opportunities elsewhere on the Senate map to go on offense.

National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-Mont.) released a supportive statement on Tuesday saying he looked “forward to working with one of our top recruits this cycle, Jim Banks, to keep Indiana red in 2024,” a clear signal that the party is comfortable with Banks at this point. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) also endorsed Banks on Tuesday, joining Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

“I’m excited about the early momentum and support for our campaign but we’ve got a long way to go,” Banks said on Tuesday morning.

Daniels said he had considered running on a pledge to serve just one six-year term.

“I would have returned any unspent campaign funds to their donors, closed any political accounts, and devoted six years to causes I think critical to the long-term safety and prosperity of our country,” he said.

In his statement, Daniels said he would have focused on safety net programs, national security in the face of a “would-be superpower” in China and securing the border without foreclosing on broader immigration reform.

“And I would have tried to work on these matters in a way that might soften the harshness and personal vitriol that has infected our public square, rendering it not only repulsive to millions of Americans, but also less capable of effective action to meet our threats and seize our opportunities,” he said.

This is the second time Daniels has turned down a chance to join that chamber: In late 1988, he declined Gov Robert Orr’s offer to fill the vacancy created by Dan Quayle’s ascent to the vice presidency. Daniels also famously turned down a 2012 presidential bid, citing concerns of his wife and daughters.

Braun’s seat, however, had special meaning to Daniels and his allies. He helped the late Sen. Dick Lugar first capture the seat in 1976 before serving as his chief of staff for five years. Daniels then ascended to oversee all national Senate races as the executive director of the Republican Party’s campaign arm.

Lugar would later lose the seat after being defeated by Richard Mourdock in the GOP primary in 2012. Former Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly would beat Mourdock later that fall. But Braun would then go on to defeat Donnelly in 2018.

Daniels was always somewhat unlikely to take a non-executive role that would have him shuttling to D.C. Still, a small circle of Daniels advisers had gone so far as to recruit a potential campaign manager and had begun preparing paperwork for him to file for a run. Last Wednesday, Daniels made the rounds in Washington, visiting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Daines, Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.). Meanwhile, Banks huddled with Vance and Donald Trump Jr. at the Capitol Hill Club — a GOP power hub.

McConnell himself met with both Daniels and Banks last week. The meeting with Banks went “very well,” according to a person familiar with the meeting.

Even before announcing, Daniels faced attacks from Trump world painting him as a RINO. The deep-pocketed Club for Growth also sought to keep him out of the race with a small statewide ad buy blasting his record. Daniels, who never ran a negative ad in his two gubernatorial campaigns in the 2000s, would have found himself in a very different political climate today.

“My one tour of duty in elected office involved, like those in business before and academe after it, an action job, with at least the chance to do useful things every day,” Daniels said. “I have never imagined that I would be well-suited to legislative office, particularly where seniority remains a significant factor in one’s effectiveness, and I saw nothing in my recent explorations that altered that view.”

  • McCarthy names GOP members to run sweeping investigative panel

McCarthy names GOP members to run sweeping investigative panel

    [ad_1]

As part of the inner-conference haggling, conference heads also added language that gives the panel authority to get access to information shared with the Intelligence Committee and review “ongoing criminal investigations,” a prospect that’s likely to spark push back from the Justice Department.

“As long as we keep it tight and know what we’re doing before we go in, which is where Jim Jordan comes into play — nobody’s better at this — we’ll be okay,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.), one of the newly named members of the panel, told POLITICO on Tuesday.

The panel’s newly named members represent the at times at-odds groups McCarthy has to balance within his conference. While putting Jordan in the driver’s seat and naming other allies to the panel could help McCarthy try to keep it in check, he also has to keep detractors like Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) happy to quell any rebellion before it begins. The swath of members also reflect that suspicion of political motives within the Justice Department and the FBI is far from fringe within the House GOP.

It’s expected to be on the front lines of skirmishes with the Biden administration, particularly the Justice Department, as Republicans on the panel will be empowered to try to examine everything from Jan. 6-related investigations to the search last year of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. Republicans have signaled they could expand their investigative scope to include agencies and issues like the Department of Education and big tech.

Some of McCarthy’s close allies snagged spots on the panel. Jordan was long expected to lead the group, and Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and Mike Johnson (R-La.), two members of the GOP leadership team, are also getting seats on the subcommittee, as well as Armstrong, a McCarthy backer who helped nominate him for speaker during a closed-door meeting last year. Stefanik and Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) are also both members of the Intelligence Committee.

Only two of McCarthy’s defectors-turned-supporters are getting a seat: Roy and Bishop. Bishop was an early advocate within the conference for a select committee, while Roy helped negotiate the deal that helped secure McCarthy the speaker’s gavel.

Other GOP members of the committee will include Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Greg Steube (R-Fla.), Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) and Harriet Hageman (R-Wyo.). Hageman defeated former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), one of the two Republicans on the Democratic-led Jan. 6 committee.

Democrats still need to recommend their own members to the panel. As part of the resolution that greenlit it, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) automatically gets a seat, due to his perch as top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Additionally, the resolution laid out that McCarthy would name 13 members beyond Jordan and Nadler, including no more than five in consultation with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Beyond Jordan, McCarthy’s list Tuesday night included 11 GOP members, filling most of the panel’s 13 available slots amid intense interest within his conference. But two aides familiar with the plan said McCarthy intends to pass a second resolution expanding the size of the panel, to account for the greater number of Republicans appointees. Democrats would get a proportional increase as well, the aides said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The panel, which the House approved earlier this month along a party-line vote, is already a lightning rod for Democratic criticism, the Biden administration and their allies, who view it as a vehicle for Republicans to use their new majority to enact political revenge.

“Jim Jordan and Kevin McCarthy claim to be investigating the weaponization of the federal government when, in fact, this new select subcommittee is the weapon itself. It is specifically designed to inject extremist politics into our justice system and shield the MAGA movement from the legal consequences of their actions,” Nadler said in a recent statement about the panel.

But Republicans have defended the decision to set up the panel as necessary to conduct oversight over the FBI and the Justice Department, two of the party’s biggest targets in recent years. They’ve also pointed to an inspector general’s report that found the FBI misused its surveillance powers to spy on a former Trump campaign adviser.

McCarthy argued that Democrats used their past two years of unified control of Washington to “target political opponents.”

“The government has a responsibility to serve the American people, not go after them,” he added.

Olivia Beavers and Kyle Cheney contributed to this report.

Head of Kurdish people-smuggling ring arrested after going on the run

    [ad_1]

The head of a Kurdish people-smuggling ring has been arrested after going on the run before his sentencing, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

Tarik Namik, 45, from Oldham, failed to show up at Manchester crown court and was given an eight-year jail term in his absence on 9 December.

Police had issued a warrant for his arrest after his no-show at Manchester crown court last month, when he was convicted of heading a “sophisticated, lucrative criminal enterprise” smuggling Kurdish migrants.

Four other members of his gang were sentenced alongside him, according to the NCA.

The four other men – based in Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham – received sentences ranging from 16 months to nearly five years for their role in the criminal scheme.

All five had admitted the charges against them at previous hearings. Namik previously pleaded guilty to a count of conspiring to help asylum seekers enter the UK, while the others pleaded guilty to helping asylum seekers to enter the country.

The agency said the court had previously heard how Namik became the subject of an NCA investigation in 2017, and headed an organised crime group involved in transporting migrants from Iraq and Iran to the UK hidden in the back of lorries.

A warrant was issued for Namik’s arrest after he failed to attend court and he was detained as he arrived at Manchester airport on a flight from Istanbul on Friday.

The NCA said he was due to appear at Manchester magistrates court on Saturday and is likely to return to the crown court on Monday to be formally sentenced.

The NCA’s branch commander, Richard Harrison, said: “Namik was a prolific people smuggler whose crime group put vulnerable migrants at great risk while he reaped the profits.

“I’m delighted that he will now face justice for the offences he committed.

“Fugitives never come off our radar, and I’d like to thank our colleagues at Greater Manchester police for their assistance in ensuring he was detained quickly the moment he set foot back in the UK.”

  • Indian-American Nikki Haley hints at exploring 2024 US presidential run

Indian-American Nikki Haley hints at exploring 2024 US presidential run

    [ad_1]

Washington: Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley has said that she feels she could be the “new leader” to take the country in a new direction and that Joe Biden may not get a second term as US President, reported Fox News.

The former South Carolina governor and US ambassador to the United Nations said she plans to run for the presidency in an interview with Fox News on Thursday.

“Well, when you’re looking at a run for president, you look at two things. You first look at, ‘does the current situation push for new?’ The second question is, ‘am I that person that could be that new leader?’ You know, on the first question, you can look all across the board, domestic, and foreign policy. You can look at, you know, inflation going up, the economy shrinking, government getting bigger, you know, small business owners not being able to pay their rent. Big businesses getting these bailouts, all of these things warrant that, yes, we need to go in a new direction,” said Haley.

“So do I think I could be that leader? Yes, But we are still working through things and we’ll figure it out. I’ve never lost a race. I said that then I still say that now. I’m not going to lose now,” she added.

Haley, 51, then listed her accomplishments in her career, saying that as governor, she took on a state that was hurting and made it “the beast of the Southeast.” Then, she said, as ambassador to the United Nations, she “took on the world when they tried to disrespect us.”

Haley served as ambassador to the UN under President Donald Trump for the first two years of his presidency, from 2017 through 2018.

If she launches a presidential bid, Haley will face her former boss in the GOP primary. Trump, the only president impeached twice, announced a third presidential campaign in November.

Haley, who resigned from the Trump administration in October 2018, said she had done a great job as governor and ambassador.

Haley, the second Indian-origin governor of Louisiana after fellow Republican Bobby Jindal, said it was time for new leadership in the Republican Party. During the interview, Haley also emphasized that President Biden, a Democrat, should not be given a second term. The next US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024.

Before serving in the federal government, Haley was the governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. She had previously served as a member of the state House of Representatives.
