Hyderabad: 25 children rescued, 10 traffickers detained by RPF

Hyderabad: Cracking down against human traffickers at railway stations, Secundrabad’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued 25 children who were being trafficked from West Bengal and Odisha and detained 10 traffickers.

The children who were in the age group of 12 to 17 years were meant to be employed in small-scale industries in the city.

As part of Operation Action Against Human Trafficking (AAHT), RPF-Secunderabad personnel in collaboration with an NGO, Bachpan Bachao Andolan rescued the children who were traveling by the East Coast Express.

“The RPF escorted the train and conducted searches between Vijayawada and Warangal stations and rescued the children,” said Debashmita C. Banerjee, senior divisional security commissioner, Secunderabad.

Rescued children, who belonged to different states, have been provided shelter in a children’s home in Hanamkonda while the BBA team will follow up with the CWC and DCPU Warangal for further rehabilitation of the rescued children.

This operation is part of the drive by the BBA and the RPF to make the nation child trafficking free.

In May 2022, the BBA and the RPF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a common goal.

Both RPF and BBA pledged to work together to share information, build the capacity of RPF personnel and railway employees to work against human trafficking, increase sensitization and create awareness and also help each other in the identification and detection of such cases.

Considering how often the traffickers use the well-networked Indian Railways as the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable carrier to traffic thousands of vulnerable women and children every year, this drive has been fetching great results.

Talking about the dark world of child trafficking and child labor that continues to mar society and the various issues that crop up while dealing with child traffickers, the director of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Manish Sharma said, “In spite of having very strong laws to protect children from all kinds of exploitation and child labor, people continue to employ underage children in commercial activities and exploit them.”

“These are serious crimes and the Union government must enact the Anti-Trafficking Bill at the earliest to curb the problem,” he added.

Lucknow: A 26-year-old RPF constable, used her experience at a private clinic to save the newborn and the mother, who were lying helpless for nearly half an hour in the lavatory of a train.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening in a train headed towards Rourkela, Odisha.

The woman passenger had delivered the baby in the lavatory. The infant was not breathing but after Sona’s intervention, the infant started breathing.

Later, a railway medical team at Rourkela junction took the woman and her child to the nearest hospital.

For her efforts, Sona of Chakradharpur railway division (Jharkhand) of South-Eastern Railway (SER) has been lauded by her colleagues and seniors.

The woman identified as Laxmi Godra, 24, and her newborn baby are said to be stable.

According to official sources, Laxmi along with her husband Bahadur Godra and brother-in-law Raju was travelling from Hazur Sahib in Nanded (Maharashtra) to Tatanagar (Jharkhand) in Hazur Sahib Nanded-Santragachi SuperFast Express (12767).

Railway sources said, “Laxmi had gone to the loo when she developed labour pain and delivered the baby inside the coach lavatory. Since no passenger, including women, came to her rescue, she along with her newborn remained inside the lavatory. But as soon as the train reached Rourkela junction, her husband jumped at the railway platform and shouted for help.”

“I was heading to Tatanagar for a scheduled firing exercise along with my group, when one of my colleagues informed me that a woman had delivered a baby inside the train lavatory and there was no one to help her. I had gained some informal experience in child delivery at a private clinic where I worked as a nonmedical staff before I joined the RPF. I followed my instincts and ran to help her,” Sona told reporters.

“Without wasting time, I first detached and clipped the umbilical cord. The newborn was showing no movement and his body was turning pale. I turned him around and started rubbing his back. It took me a couple of minutes when the baby started crying after which I wrapped him in a blanket. By then the medical team arrived and took over,” she said.
