  • What Rupert Murdoch and Logan Roy Figured Out

What Rupert Murdoch and Logan Roy Figured Out

    [ad_1]

    tv hbo succession 77877

The “Succession” Kids lose interest in The Hundred the second they learn that papa Logan is bidding for Pierce Global Media, a conglomerate he tried and failed to buy in season two. After much swearing and bidding, the Kids outbid Logan for Pierce, paying $10 billion.

Which was a better business move for the Kids, The Hundred or Pierce? Should Logan have gone higher?

If The Hundred were a loaf of bread and not a media start-up, you’d quickly find it going for 75 percent off at a bakery outlet. Listen to The Hundred’s worn-out pitch:

“The world’s leading experts provide humanity’s most invaluable knowledge in bespoke, bite-sized parcels, designed to improve the lives of subscribers and the world in general. The antidote to the modern malaise of empty-caloried input-overload.”

“Succession” writers are deliberately sending up the new media genre here, all but asking their viewers, “Can’t you just smell the mold?” The web abounds with bite-sized parcels, news digests, New York Times breaking news alerts on phones, self-help media, TikTok and other mini-diversions. It’s hard to imagine the “Succession” Kids putting their own trust funds into The Hundred, let alone convincing the investors they’ve summoned to pony up for the “disrupter news brand.” There’s no evidence they understand the new media property they’re conjuring into existence. Do they read any of the publications their pitch name-checks? Do they read anything? Can they read? They talk about finding subscribers, which appears to be essential for modern media plays, but discuss no reason why anybody would pay for their projection.

The Hundred proposal also echoes the tale of The Daily, a 2011 iPad-centric start-up that Murdoch personally shepherded into existence before it collapsed almost two years later due to lack of reader interest. “New times demand new journalism,” Murdoch said at the launch of his “visionary” property, which he said was for modern news consumers who expect “content tailored to their specific interests to be available anytime, anywhere.” Its initial investment was about $30 million, reported the New York Times, and the weekly cost of production was $500,000.

But what of Pierce Global Media? A couple of seasons ago, Logan who has a decade-long lust to buy Pierce, was willing to part with $25 billion for it. (Pierce is owned by a family that resembles the Bancrofts, who sold Dow Jones of the Wall Street Journal fame to Murdoch for $5.7 billion.) After Logan offers $6 billion for Pierce he gets topped by the Kids who have flown to matriarch Nan Pierce’s vineland home to “check out” a deal with her and end up chasing their own tails to a $10 billion offer.

The offer makes no business sense. If Pierce has lost this much hypothetical value in just a couple of seasons, it’s on a downward trajectory. Why get trapped in a bidding war? In earlier cross-talk, Roman tells Shiv she wants to buy Pierce to retaliate against her husband Tom, who double-crossed her in the season three finale, and tells Kendall he wants to retaliate against Logan who has ground him down for his entire life. They deny it, but it’s true. Roman, who should know better, goes along with them anyway, and the bid mushrooms to $10 billion to seal the deal. The Kids are as stupid as Logan makes them out to be. Buying Pierce, even at an inflated price, makes sense for Logan because it would leave him in control of a conservative cable channel, ATN, and the lefty Pierce broadcast properties. He would also accrue more political influence. The Kids, on the other hand, don’t seem to know much about running media properties, and owning one will only put them in competition with the old man, who does.

The episode leaves it unsaid, but perhaps allowing his offspring to win the bidding war at a ridiculous price might be the most injurious thing Logan has ever done to them. In real life, Murdoch grossly overpaid for Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal when he threw down $5 billion for it. A little over a year later, his company took a large write-down, $3 billion of which reflected the declining value of his newspaper operation, which included Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal. Murdoch, like Logan Roy, controls such an immense operation he can afford such a localized financial calamity. But can the Kids?

We can surmise where all this is going. First, the Kids did the right thing for the wrong reason by abandoning The Hundred for a run on Pierce. Then they did the wrong thing for the wrong reason by overbidding for a big company. Surely, they will discover that they overpaid and try to extricate themselves from the deal. The Pierces will demand — and receive — an enormous fee from the Kids for breaking the deal, and the Kids will pay through the snout. Then Logan will pounce at a more reasonable price, and taking possession of Pierce Global Media will allow him to expand his empire, out-duel the Pierce family at last, and punish his treacherous Kids.

“Succession” is no more a documentary about the Murdoch family, new media and the television business than Shakespeare’s plays are faithful histories of London, Venice, Rome and Verona. “Succession’s” writers rightly mock the likely success of new media startups in the episode, mockery that was rewarded this week as Grid, a worthy startup from early 2022 with a $10 million bankroll, shut down Monday after being acquired by the Messenger, yet another soon-to-launch site.

The media game has always been a gamble for its best players, like Rupert Murdoch and Logan Roy, as well as its suckers, like the Kids, who can’t even figure out what game they want to play. Legacy media might not be the blue chip that “Succession” seems to imply it is — the sector lost $500 billion in market cap last year. But if the episode convinced just one investor not to start a Substack meets Masterclass meets the Economist meets the New Yorker this year, it will have done its job.

  • App-based attendance weakening MGNREGA: Aruna Roy

App-based attendance weakening MGNREGA: Aruna Roy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As MGNREGA workers continue their 100-day protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against the recently introduced app-based attendance system, social activist Aruna Roy on Friday said the new system is weakening the law.

Roy, who played a key role in the stir for the rural employment guarantee law, accused the Union government of trying to destroy the law by cutting allocations and making the process of seeking employment difficult by introducing the app-based attendance system and Aadhaar-based payment system.

“Lakhs of people struggled for 10-12 years to get a law to give employment guarantee. Now they’re destroying the law by just issuing an order… I’m not appalled, is this democracy? This cannot be done, you can’t ignore demands of the majority of people on edge of starvation. You gave the smallest amount of succour and now withdrawing it… Is it democracy?” Roy asked.

“They are taking away a constitutional right… They know they cannot do away with the law so they’re making it weak,” she said.

Workers on protest meanwhile raised slogans saying ‘No NREGA, No Votes’ and said they’re losing employment as the app often does not work due to network issues.

Mandavi Devi, a daily wage labourer from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, said getting work in MGNREGA is not easy, and they never get 100 days of work. She said with the new app-based attendance system, many a time their attendance is not marked due to network issues.

“We have to walk 4-5 kilometres to go to the work site. We are ready to work, but after reaching the site, if the attendance does not get marked, then we don’t get paid,” she said.

Sudama Devi, who is also from Muzaffarpur, said the workers prefer working under MGNREGA as it pays more, but the new attendance and Aadhaar-based payment systems are proving to be a hindrance.

“The landlord in the village, we call him ‘Malik’. If we work in his field, he pays Rs 50 for a day, and also verbally abuses us. I have a 10-member family, how would everyone eat for Rs 50? If we work for MGNREGA, we have Rs 200-250,” she said.

The protesting workers also recently met officials from the Rural Development Ministry. Asked what transpired in the meeting, a member of the NREGA Sangharsh Morcha said that the government told them it was not willing to do away with this system.

Roy warned that the weakening of MGNREGA will negatively impact the rural economy.

“India could sail through global meltdowns because of such schemes that empower the poor… If you ask a worker what difference MGNREGA made in their lives, they’ll tell you they could feed their families, send their children to school, afford healthcare, it’s that basic,” said Roy.

Workers embarked on a protest in the national capital on February 14, barely a month after digital attendance was made mandatory for MGNREGA, with complaints that their attendance is not getting marked and wages are being deducted.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, better known as MGNREGA or NREGA, is a flagship scheme aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas of the country by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

  • Nation looking at Bihar with great expectations for change: Arundhati Roy

Nation looking at Bihar with great expectations for change: Arundhati Roy

    [ad_1]

Patna: Acclaimed author Arundhati Roy said on Friday that she has great expectations from Bihar in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as the exercise of opposition unity is starting from the state which will prove successful.

Roy was in Patna to participate in the 11th national meeting of CPI(ML) held at the Sri Krishna Memorial hall.

“We have great expectations that Bihar will play a crucial role in opposition unity ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls. Recently, the BJP received a big jolt in Bihar. People of the country are looking at Bihar to remove the BJP from the Centre,” Roy said.

“At present, the country is run by only four people — Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. The country has 21 people whose wealth is more than the collective wealth of 30 crore people. Look at Adani, he is operating in almost all sectors,” Roy said.

“We need a sensible alliance to remove the BJP from the Centre. The Left parties have taken the initiative and have also invited the two alliance leaders, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav. We are hopeful that they will participate in the CPI(ML) event on the second day,” Roy said.

  • Arundhati Roy attends CPI(ML) Liberation function in Patna

Arundhati Roy attends CPI(ML) Liberation function in Patna

    [ad_1]

Patna: Booker Prize winning author and social activist Arundhati Roy Friday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and stressed on the need for forging an “anti-Fascist” grouping of opposition parties.

Roy was in the Bihar capital for addressing a convention organized by the CPI(ML) Liberation, which is a part of the multi-party ‘Mahagathbandhan’ but supports the Nitish Kumar government in the state from outside.

“The country is run by four people. Two of them happen to be buyers and the rest two are sellers. All of them belong to Gujarat”, said the writer evoking applause from the crowds.

She was obviously referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani.

She said “Modi ji thinks that he need not speak about Adani, since the common people should remain ever thankful to him for five kilograms of ration. But the Hindenburg report speaks about a scam involving 100 billion dollars. It is the biggest corporate scam in the country”.

Referring to the alleged proximity of the business tycoon with the prime minister, she said “Earlier, Modi ji used to travel by Adani’s aircraft. Now, Adani travels with Modi ji in the latter’s plane.

“The farm laws had been brought to benefit Adani and his ilk, which is evident from the fact that his warehouses had come up across the country,” Roy said.

“No raids were ever conducted on properties owned by Adani. But BBC is paying the price for bringing to the fore the truth behind the Gujarat riots of 2002”, she quipped and questioned the “silence of US and UK” over the Income Tax department’s action against the international broadcaster.

Lavishing praise on CPI(ML) Liberation for taking a “stand against Fascism”, she said it was essential to bring together all forces opposed to the “current capitalistic system, wherein five per cent people control 60 per cent of the nation’s wealth”.

“It is good that different political groups opposed to the current ruling dispensation are making an effort to come together. Hopefully, the energy of public movements will also be harnessed”, said the celebrated author, who won the Booker for her debut novel “The God of Small Things” and has been actively associated with a number of human rights movements.

The three-day CPI(ML) Liberation party Congress, which was inaugurated on Thursday, will conclude on Saturday.

The invitees on that day include Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Tejashwi Yadav and Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren.
