Bengaluru casteist skit row: Six Jain University students suspended

    [ad_1]

Following the use of casteist slurs against SC/STs and Dr BR Ambedkar in a skit performed by the Jain University Centre for Management Studies students at a college festival, six students have been suspended over the incident.

The suspended students were part of a skit that displayed caste discrimination, insulted India’s constitution writer Dr B R Ambedkar and also took a dig at the reservation system in the country.

A number of police complaints we’re registered against the students. Aakshay Bansode, state member Yuva of Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi filed a complaint in Nanded district of Maharashtra seeking strict action.

“The skit is highly casteist and performed with serious ill motives and to intentionally insult and humiliate the community and people belonging to it. Moreover, the derogatory and defamatory statement about Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is also highly offensive at large and showcases the intention of the performers and the university authorities as this act went through various checks yet was allowed to perform on stage and publish on social media,” Bansode’s complaint stated.

An FIR against the principal and senior officials of the university has been filed at the Siddapura police station in Jayanagar.

Postgraduate students and research fellows of Bangalore University have also filed a police complaint at the Jnanabharati police station.

Earlier in the day students of NSUI Karnataka and many Dalit organisations protested in front of the Jain college demanding action against those involved in the skit. Police were called to control the protest.

The skit was performed on February 4 by a group called ‘The Delroys Boys’ as part of ‘MadAds,’ a segment at the fest where the participants had to advertise imaginary products along lines of humour.

The students have reportedly tendered an unconditional apology to the college management. However, the issue seems to brew and not settle down. On Thursday evening a group of students published an online petition on Jhatkaa.org bringing the incident to light.

Adani row: Water cannon used against protesting AAP workers in Chandigarh

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police on Sunday used water cannon to prevent AAP workers from moving towards the BJP office here as part of their protest against the Centre over the Adani issue.

Aam Aadmi Party workers, gathered from various parts of Punjab, wanted to “gherao” the office of the Punjab BJP in Sector 37 here to register their protest against the party-led central government.

Barricades were put up and a heavy deployment of police was made to prevent the protesters from heading towards the Punjab BJP office.

Police used a water cannon when AAP workers tried to force their way towards the BJP office, said officials.

Carrying party flags, AAP workers shouted slogans against the BJP government over the Adani issue.

AAP MLA from the Jalalabad constituency Jagdeep Kamboj slammed the BJP alleging that it has failed on all fronts.

Later, police detained several party leaders and workers.

Earlier speaking to reporters at the party office, AAP leader Harchand Singh Barsat alleged that the Adani Group’s fortunes rose under the BJP rule.

Another AAP leader, Sunny Ahluwalia, said the party will continue to raise its voice over this issue.

Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after US-based activist short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation, against the Gautam Adani-led group, which has dismissed the allegations as lies.

Opposition parties have been demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe into the issue.

Casteist slur in Bengaluru college fest skit stirs row

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The incident of casteist slur made during the presentation of a college skit recently in Bengaluru has triggered a row.

A police complaint has been registered in this connection, while an online petition slamming the organisers is also getting support.

The Delroys Boys’, the group of students performing the skit, has tendered an unconditional apology for the presentation. However, the debate over the issue is rising every day.

The incident came to light after a group of students published an online petition on Jhatkaa.org on Thursday evening. The petition stated that the college contingent from Jain University’s Centre for Management Studies (CMS) staged an incredibly casteist and insensitive skit at a college fest.

The anonymous petitioners objected to the normalisation of caste discrimination in the pretext of humour. The skit was performed as part of Madads’, a segment at the fest where the participants had to advertise imaginary products.

‘The Delroys Boys’, the theatre group from CMS, who are in the thick of the controversy, in their skit exhibited a man belonging to the lower caste attempting to date an upper caste woman. The skit turned B.R. Ambedkar as ‘Beer Ambedkar’. It also used the phrase, ‘Why be Dalit, when you can be D-Lit’.

Akshay Bansode, member of the Vanchit Bahujan Yuva Aghadi, has filed a police complaint in Maharashtra in this matter. The complainant urged the police to treat the complaint as an FIR and initiate action against the performers and the university.

Sources said that the controversial skit was performed at other platforms as well. The ‘Delroys Boys’ maintained that they are sorry if they spoke ill about some people and apologised for their ‘mistake’.

SC asks Centre, SEBI to submit report on steps taken on Adani-Hindenburg row

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court instructed the Centre and SEBI to submit a report on the regulatory regime and steps taken in the aftermath of the Hindenburg-Adani issue, setting Monday as the day for hearing the case.

The court has urged the government and SEBI to provide information by Monday on the causes of the market crash following the Hindenburg Research report, as well as suggestions on how the regulatory system may be reinforced to prevent such an event in the future.

The court directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit the note after consulting with the government and SEBI on the best course of action, and even advocated forming an expert committee to make necessary changes to the legislative and regulatory framework governing security markets.

The bench stated that because there is seamless money movement and growing middle class investment in the stock market, a strong system must be put in place to protect investors.

“The point that really bothers us is how do we protect the interest of the Indian investors,” the bench said

“Can we contemplate an expert committee that can give inputs for modifying the statutory regulations so that it doesn’t happen again?” the apex court questioned SEBI.

BRS, AAP, Shiv Sena-UBT stage walkout from RS after chair rejects notices on Adani row

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena Thackeray faction and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha after their adjournment notices were disallowed by the chair.

Soon after laying of papers, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said he has received four notices under Rule 267 from BRS member K Keshava Rao, AAP member Sanjay Singh and Shiv Sena members Sanjay Raut and Priyanka Chaturvedi and disallowed the same.

Rao stood up and raised objection to the Rajya Sabha chairman’s remarks on Tuesday on their boycott of the House.

Sanjay Singh also rose to seek a discussion on the Adani issue but was not allowed by the chair as their notices were disallowed.

Soon, the BRS, Sena and AAP members staged a walkout from the House.

The House started the discussion on the motion of thanks to the president’s address as there was no Zero Hour and Question Hour. The discussion on the motion of thanks would continue without lunch break.

“I have received four notices under Rule 267 from Sanjay Raut, K Keshava Rao, Sanjay Singh, Priyanka Chaturvedi. I reiterate my stand. I have carefully gone through them. I do not find the notices in order. I am constrained not to allow them,” the chairman said.

On BRS member Rao’s anguish over the chairman’s remarks made on Tuesday, he said, “The kind of aggressive body language you are reflecting is most unfortunate. You have perhaps not had the occasion to go through what I had said yesterday with full sense of sublimity, sobriety and seriousness.”

Asking him to take his seat, he said, “This is not the way we conduct this House. What I said is on record, you can take recourse to rules. This is not the way to do it. I have conveyed my sentiments and these are the sentiments of millions of people.”

Dhankhar said for the first time in this country, a history of the “wrong type” has been created by engaging in a proclaimed boycott of the President.

“I would urge the members, we are sending a very dangerous signal to people. Their anger is beyond tolerance. Every time in the morning they see this spectacle of the House being plunged into disorder as part of strategy,” the chairman said.

AAP, BRS members created uproar by raising slogans of “PM sadan mein aao. jawaab do. JPC se jaanch karao (PM should come to the House and answer and JPC probe should be ordered)” and later staged a walkout.

They later held a demonstration in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament premises.

Adani row: Financial markets highly regulated, Centre monitoring situation, says BJP

    [ad_1]

Indore: Amid the raging controversy over Adani Group’s stocks, the BJP on Saturday said financial markets are highly regulated and the Centre is closely monitoring the situation.

Stocks of the Adani Group have taken a beating on the bourses after US-based activist short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation at the Gautam Adani-led group.

The Adani group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

“I do not want to name any particular group but Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has already spoken on this subject. The Reserve Bank has also given a detailed explanation as per which banks of the country have given huge loans to various companies by following all parameters,” Bharatiya Janata Party’s national spokesperson Gopal Krishna Agarwal told reporters.

He said financial markets are heavily regulated by the Reserve Bank, SEBI and other regulators. The Finance Minister has made it clear that all regulators are doing their job.

Agarwal said the SEBI has also issued a statement regarding the current situation.

He said the corporate sector had seen ups and downs in the past also and the government is keeping a close watch on the current situation.

On the Congress’ demand for setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the allegations of fraud and stock manipulation against the Adani Group, the BJP spokesperson avoided a direct response, saying, “The government will look into this matter.”

Meanwhile, Agarwal said the general budget will strengthen the economy and several new jobs will be created due to the expansion of the manufacturing sector.

He said there is no recession in India by any means currently and its economy is growing at the fastest rate in the world.

Congress steps up attack against govt over Adani row

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress-led opposition stepped up its attack on Friday against the government over the Adani row and demanded that there should be a thorough investigation into what they alleged was a “mega scam” as it involved public money.

Opposition parties have been demanding a joint parliamentary probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the allegations of fraud and manipulation by the US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research against billionaire Gautam Adani’s companies that have triggered an unprecedented stock crash.

“Due to the investment made by LIC-SBI in Adani Group, the money of common citizens of the country is sinking. The Opposition is demanding an inquiry into the entire matter,” the Congress said.

The party also said that it has been two days, and the Opposition is demanding a discussion on the Adani issue in Parliament.

“The money of the people of the country invested in LIC-SBI is sinking. The opposition wants to raise the voice of the public in the House and discuss their concerns. But, PM Modi is running away from the discussion, saving his friend. Fear of what,” the opposition party asked.

Adani Group has lost more than USD 100 billion in market value since Hindenburg Research accused it of stock manipulation and accounting fraud in the January 24 report. The group has denied any wrongdoing and has threatened to sue Hindenburg.

“Dow Jones dropped Adani from Sustainability Indices. Action is being taken against Adani all over the world, but PM Modi is quiet. Where are SEBI, ED, ROC, and SFIO? When will our government take action,” the Congress asked on Twitter.

The opposition parties met in the morning in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and coordinated their strategy for the day.

While 16 parties including the Congress, RJD, AAP, DMK, SP, CPI, CPI-M, BRS, Shiv Sena (Thackeray), JDU, NCP and NC participated in the meeting on Friday, Trinamool Congress did not attend the same. TMC was present in the Thursday meeting of opposition parties.

The Opposition later stalled the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament, which failed to transact any business and were adjourned within minutes.

“Parliament adjourned for another day because the Opposition demands a JPC on the PM-linked Adani issue that is playing havoc on the savings of crores of Indians,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said.

“Modi sarkar says MPs are wasting public money. What about the crores people have lost over the last few days of the ‘Maha mega scam,” he asked.

He also accused the government of being fearful of the Opposition demands for a JPC on the Adani issue and alleged that the business group has patronage at the highest levels.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said,”the difference between the global financial community and India’s approach to allegations against Adani is stark.”

“Distant third parties like S&P Dow Jones remove Adani Enterprises on the severity of allegations. Our own regulators and government remain inactive and silent despite 10 days of mayhem,” she said on Twitter.

Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also wrote to the SEBI chief demanding action on the Adani issue not just for the sake of shareholders who are losing their money but also in the national interest.

“Reminding SEBI about its authority to regulate the markets and ensure transparency, compliances are met with so as to not shake the investor confidence & wipe off wealth of investors,” she said on Twitter.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra also tweeted:”S&P Dow Jones removes Adani Enterprises from Dow Jones indices due to stock manipulation and accounting fraud charges.

“Why is NSE not reevaluating index membership of Adani stocks when international ones are.”

  • Ramcharitmanas row: Chhattisgarh CM slams Yogi, Maurya

Ramcharitmanas row: Chhattisgarh CM slams Yogi, Maurya

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said the row over some parts of Tulsidas’ epic ‘Ramcharitmanas’ allegedly being against women and those from backward communities was being created by leaders in Uttar Pradesh as part of vote-bank politics.

The ‘Ramcharitmanas’ issue was set off in UP by Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya who claimed on January 22 that some portions insult a large section of society on the basis of caste and had sought that they be “banned”.

“It (controversy) suited both (UP CM) Yogi Adityanath and Maurya to garner votes. However, people face the wrath (of such tussles), while essential issues are ignored,” Baghel told reporters.

Asserting that “two or four couplets” do not make any difference to such a great epic, Baghel said one must adhere to social reformer Vinoba Bhave’s advice that the merits of any religious book or philosophy must be discussed in the present context.

He said Bhave advised that the basic elements (of the book or philosophy) must be discussed and its subtle facts must be accepted after consideration.

“This controversy is wrong. Ramcharitmanas was written 650 years ago by Tulsidas while Valmiki had written it much earlier. There is no need to accept it as it is written in the current situation. You should accept good things from Ramayana and the things you don’t like, leave it,” the senior Congress leader said.

Tulsidas had faced opposition at the time for writing Ramcharitmanas in Hindi but he must be credited for taking the epic to every household, Baghel asserted.

“By creating controversies around such small issues, you are just doing politics of votes,” Baghel said without naming anyone.
