  • Regional parties to play key role in defeating BJP in 2024: Akhilesh Yadav

Regional parties to play key role in defeating BJP in 2024: Akhilesh Yadav

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Exuding confidence that an opposition alliance would take shape in the days to come, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said regional parties would play a key role in putting up a fight against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

However, on the role of the Congress in this proposed opposition front, Yadav said it is for the grand old party to decide.

“Efforts are on to forge an opposition alliance or front. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao are making efforts (on their own). I am confident that in the days to come, an opposition alliance will take shape, which will fight against the BJP,” he told PTI Video in an interview.

To a question whether he is putting the Congress and the BJP on the same pedestal, the SP chief said it is the regional parties in various states which are fighting the saffron camp.

“In many states, the Congress doesn’t exist in comparison to the BJP, but regional parties are fighting tooth and nail against the saffron camp on the ground, and I am hopeful that they will succeed,” he said.

When told that regional parties such as the JD (U), RJD and the DMK are keen on having the Congress in the opposition alliance, Yadav said they are already in a coalition with the grand old party.

“It is a question of a big fight, and the Congress itself will decide its role in this fight,” he said.

Asked who would be the face of the opposition camp in the next Lok Sabha elections, Yadav said it would be decided after the polls and is “not a pertinent question” right now.

“You are talking about face. What about the (BJP’s) face in 2014 and 2019, who made false promises to win the election?” he said without naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

None of the promises made by the BJP in 2014 and 2019 was fulfilled, the SP chief claimed.

When asked whether his party would contest in the Raebareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in UP considered pocket boroughs of the Congress, Yadav alleged that SP workers are being killed in Amethi.

“In Amethi, our cadres are being killed. The Samajwadi Party workers are questioning who will fight for them. It is the Samajwadi workers there who are supporting each other; the Congress workers are not coming out in our support,” he said.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is the MP of Raebareli while her son and former party president Rahul Gandhi was defeated by Union minister Smriti Irani from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Yadav said the Samajwadi Party would leave no stone unturned to stop the juggernaut of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh in the next Lok Sabha polls.

“If the BJP wants to come to power in 2024, it has to win in UP. We will ensure that the BJP is defeated in UP and also in the country. In Uttar Pradesh, we will fight with our existing allies,” he said.

The SP and the Congress had joined hands in the 2017 assembly polls in UP but lost to the BJP. In the Lok Sabha polls held two years later, the grand old party was kept out of the SP-BSP alliance in the state.

Speaking on the Adani issue, the SP chief slammed the Centre for allegedly allowing the loot of the country’s assets and public money.

He asked, “Why no question is being asked about the so-called number two (richest man)? Why is there no accountability on public money in LIC and SBI which is getting lost?”

The Hindenburg report that alleged accounting fraud and stock manipulation at the Adani group, came just as a Rs 20,000 crore follow-on share sale of the conglomerate’s flagship firm Adani Enterprises opened in January.

  • A few retd judges, some activists want judiciary to play role of Opposition: Rijiju

A few retd judges, some activists want judiciary to play role of Opposition: Rijiju

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are “part of the anti-India gang” are trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

He again criticised the collegium system to appoint judges, saying it is a result of the “misadventure” of the Congress party.

The minister was speaking at the India Today Conclave, where Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud later defended the collegium system, saying “not every system is perfect but this is the best system we have developed” and the “object was to protect the independence of the judiciary, which is a cardinal value”.

Rijiju also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in London on democracy in India, saying the person who speaks the most says he is not allowed to speak.

“Anti-India forces in India and outside India, they use the same language – democracy is in danger, human rights are non-existent in India. What this anti-India gang says, the same language is used by Rahul Gandhi,” the minister alleged.

Whatever Rahul Gandhi says is publicised with a “louder voice” by the “same ecosystem”, he said.

“The same ecosystem is working in India and outside India. We will not allow this ‘tukde-tukde gang’ to destroy our integrity, our sovereignty,” Rijiju asserted.

The minister said at a recent seminar in Delhi, where some retired Supreme Court judges and some senior lawyers were present, the topic was accountability in judges’ appointment.

“But the discussion the whole day was how the government is taking over the judiciary,” he said.

The minister said he shares an excellent relationship with the chief justice of India, the present one, the last one and all the judges of the Supreme Court.

“It is a few of the retired judges – maybe three or four – a few of those activists, part of the anti-India gang, these people are trying to make Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

“Some people also go to the court and say please rein in the government, please change the policy of the government. These people want the judiciary to play the role of the opposition party, which cannot happen,” Rijiju said.

The judiciary, he asserted, is neutral.

The minister’s remarks were criticised by Congress general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh.

“A Law Minister talking like an Outlaw. A Minister of Justice propagating Injustice. If this is not a threat to freedom AFTER speech what is?” Ramesh tweeted.

Rijiju said, “Judges are not part of any group or political affiliation. How can these people openly say that the Indian judiciary must take head-on with the government. What kind of propaganda is this.”

Asked whether any action was being taken against just elements, he said, “Actions will be taken, actions are being taken as per law. Nobody will escape.”

On the issue of the appointment of judges, Rijiju said there is no role of the judiciary as such to initiate and to give finalisation to the appointment of judges.

“It was only later due to the misadventure of the Congress party, the Supreme Court started acting, which some people describe as judicial overreach. Then the collegium system came into existence”.

But right now, the position of the government is very clear that the collegium system is in place.

“As long as a new system is not introduced, we will follow the collegium system but the appointment of judges cannot be done by a judicial order. It is purely administrative,” he said.

  • Siddaramaiah takes dig at Modi for keeping mum on BJP MLA’s role in bribery case

Siddaramaiah takes dig at Modi for keeping mum on BJP MLA’s role in bribery case

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding alleged involvement of a BJP MLA in a corruption case filed by Lokayukta, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Sunday asked him whether he has changed his ‘Na khaunga, Na khane dunga’ slogan to ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’.

While the Hindi phrase ‘Na khaunga, na khane dunga’ translates to — would not take bribes, nor let anyone do so; ‘Tum khao, mujhe bhi khilao’ means — you take bribe and give me its share.

The former Karnataka chief minister’s dig at Modi, through a series of tweets, came on a day when the Prime Minister was visiting Mandya and Dharwad districts of the state. Assembly elections are due in the state by May.

“Mr.@narendramodi, Why are you silent despite Lokayukta exposing rampant corruption done by MLA Virupaksha (Madal Virupakshappa) & his son? Do you also have share in that corrupt money?” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

“Will a corrupt and shameless MLA of @BJP4Karnataka be able to go on a display march without the support of the supreme leader of BJP like you?, Mr. @narendramodi .Are all @BJP4India leaders shameless?” he asked, in another tweet, adding “Did you, Mr @narendramodi, change your Na Khaunga, Na Khane dunga slogan to ‘Thum Khao, Muje bhi Khilao’?”

Virupakshappa is an accused in a bribery case where his son, a government officer, was caught by the state Lokayukta police while collecting money allegedly on behalf of the legislator.

Siddaramaiah, the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, also asked the Prime Minister stating: “…Can we assume that till the share of the corrupt money reaches you, all these shameless corrupt leaders of @BJP4Karnataka will remain safe & roam scot free?”

  • Farmhouse owner’s wife alleges husband’s role in Satish Kaushik’s death

Farmhouse owner’s wife alleges husband’s role in Satish Kaushik’s death

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In connection with the veteran actor Satish Kaushik’s death, the owner of the farmhouse Vikas Malu’s second wife has levelled serious accusations against her husband, claiming his role in the death of the actor.

Vikas Malu’s second wife has also complained to the police in the matter, after which the Delhi Police has initiated an inquiry into the allegations.

Delhi Police told ANI in a statement, “In actor Satish Kaushik’s death case, an inquiry has been initiated into allegations of foul play levelled by a woman (wife of one Vikas Malu). An inspector-level officer from the South West district has been asked to probe the entire matter. The woman will be called by police to record her statement.”

Talking to ANI, Vikas Malu’s wife said, “I have got a complaint registered in connection with Satish Ji’s death. He had come to my husband’s farmhouse for a party, where his health deteriorated. Some objectionable medicines have also been found from the farmhouse.”

She alleged that Satish Kaushik and Vikas Malu had business links and there was a monetary dispute between the two.

“Satish Ji and my husband had business connections as well. In August 2022, an argument broke out between Satish Ji and my husband, where Satish ji demanded Rs 15 crores that he had earlier given to him. But, my husband said that he will give the money in India.”

She further alleged, “When I later asked from him about the money, my husband said that he borrowed the money from Satish ji, but the money went for loss during the Covid period. My husband was not in the mood to return the money, he even said that he will use blue pills and Russian girls to do away with Satish Kaushik. That’s why I have brought this angle to the police for fair investigation”.

On being asked about her earlier complaints against Vikas Malu, she alleged that Vikas as well as his son “raped” her after which she left his house.

“I have earlier registered a complaint against Vikas Malu. Firstly, Vikas raped me, and then forcefully got married to me. After marriage, even his son started raping me. This was completely unbearable for me, and I left his house in October 2022,” she said.

It is pertinent to note that the minor son of Vikas Malu’s first wife had also lodged an FIR against Vikas Malu’s second wife under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. The video is also with the police, the police said.

After receiving complaints from both sides, the police registered FIRs against both parties but did not arrest them.

Vikas Malu’s second wife further alleged that her husband has connections to the underworld including the likes of Dawood Ibrahim.

“I have images of several people who used to visit our house regularly. Vikas himself told me that Anas, who used to come to our house, is Dawood Ibrahim’s son. Mustafa, another person who regularly came to our house, is also Dawood Ibrahim’s right-hand man,” she further added.

The matter pertains to the death of veteran actor, Satish Kaushik who died on March 9 allegedly due to cardiac arrest

Satish Kaushik celebrated Holi with his friends, and danced, after which he went to sleep at around 9:30 pm and at around 12 am his health deteriorated. He called the manager and told him that he was having difficulty in breathing. His manager took him to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram where he died at 1.43 am despite being given Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

The Delhi Police said that it is examining seven hours of CCTV footage at the farmhouse in Delhi where the actor celebrated Holi.

The police also said that the detailed post-mortem report of Kaushik confirms that the death was a “natural” one and occurred due to ‘cardiac arrest’.

According to the post-mortem report, the cause of death was cardiac arrest due to coronary artery blockage which is associated with coronary artery diseases. Death appears to be natural in manner. The viscera have been preserved and photography, videography has been done, the police said.

Satish Kaushik had a medical history of hypertension and sugar, the police said.

Days after the demise of the 66-year-old veteran actor, a crime team of Delhi’s South-West district police visited the farmhouse, where the deceased actor was staying, sources said on Saturday.

As per sources, the probing team recovered some ‘medicines’ from the farmhouse. The medicines have been sent for examination and the report is yet to come. Although, no banned medicine has been found, however, it is being ascertained which salts were found in the medicine.

Further investigation is underway in the case.

“A point I would like to make to my Democratic colleagues on this committee, do you think Phil Washington could come anywhere close to Acting Administrator Nolen’s knowledge? I think the answer is no,” Cruz said, after asking Nolen to spell out his long career as a pilot. “I think it’s clear that Phil Washington is not going to have the votes. I think a nominee like Acting Administrator Nolen would receive widespread bipartisan support and could get confirmed quickly.”

At one point during the hearing Nolen made it clear that he isn’t angling for the job.

“I do believe that Phil Washington is fully qualified, I support the president and I support the nomination,” Nolen said.

Beyond Cruz, some Democrats on the Commerce Committee are not fully convinced. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said she hasn’t yet decided on the nomination and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) also raised concerns about Washington’s experience during his nomination hearing last week. While some Republicans vocally oppose Washington, not everyone agrees with Cruz. Aviation Subcommittee ranking member Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) said he’s also undecided.

Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) argued on Wednesday that Washington’s lack of ties to the aviation industry will assist ongoing congressional efforts to ensure that the FAA is fully independent from the airlines and aircraft manufacturers it regulates, particularly after the Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019.

“I think this notion of running a large organization with transportation background is really important because there’s some things here you’re trying to change culturally,” Cantwell said. “I definitely think he doesn’t represent the status quo and sometimes you get people with very long aviation careers and they’re the ones who basically go along with the system we’re trying to change.”

Cantwell hasn’t announced a committee vote on Washington’s nomination, a sign that Democrats may not be aligned.

Senate Democrats largely did not weigh in on Washington’s nomination last Congress, when he faced questions over lawsuits and search warrants related to his time leading the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But after the White House renominated Washington in January, Cantwell announced her support and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Washington’s confirmation a priority after a FAA computer system meltdown led to the first nationwide grounding of flights since September 11, 2001.

“With recent events, including airline troubles and last week’s tech problem, this agency needs a leader confirmed by the Senate immediately,” Schumer said in January.

  • Role of women in formation of Telangana

Role of women in formation of Telangana

    [ad_1]

The role of women in any society is no less than men though it is usually not highlighted in the way it should be.

Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, thus gives an opportunity to us to acknowledge this role of women.

In Telangana, too women leaders have played a significant role in its freedom as a separate state and shaping its society.  However, even though masses of women fought alongside men in the struggle for Telangana only a few of them got into positions of power. Most of the women leaders’ contribution seems to have been forgotten.

Telangana earlier part of Hyderabad state after a decade of Independence merged with Andhra Pradesh.

However, people of Telangana kept on striving for their separate state which was eventually successful in 2014 on June 2.

Women of Telangana played a major role in the realization of the dreams of Telangana people to have a state of their own. There were several issues that agitated the women and they fought against those like domestic violence and the scourge of dowry,  human trafficking and the liquor mafia as it had a disastrous effect on their family life.

Leading among these women was Belli Lalitha called the nightingale of Telangana.

Interestingly she used her folk songs to inspire people to struggle for their rights and demand their own state.

Herself a school dropout and worker in cotton mill, she later became a labour and political leader. Belli Lalitha was brutally murdered on 26 May 1999 by a former member of the Peoples War Group (PWG) and a notorious gangster. Her body was hacked into 17 parts and thrown in different locations. This instead of serving as a warning against the movement gave fillip to it which grew much stronger after this attempt at suppression.

Ben Lalitha’s songs became a means to mobilize women.

In meetings where thousands gathered to stress the need for a separate state like  Bhuvanagiri Sabha and Jana Sabha, Ben Lalitha used to participate and sing her inspirational songs stirring the crowds.

She worked with the anti liquor movement and also contributed to the awareness on issues of dowry, domestic violence.

Her murder by her opponents led to the demand for Telangana state becoming very strong and widespread with her popular songs energizing everyone and intensifying the struggle.

Earlier too during the 1950s, many women were involved in the demand by Telangana people for a separate state which was an armed resistance of women and men against feudal oppression and domination in the Telangana region.

At that time the armed struggle was led by communists and against the feudalistic zamindari system.

Actually, the people in the Telangana region fought against the Andhra people who were alleged to dominate in the Telangana region.

Telangana women played a very important role in the struggle for separate state which also aligned and focused on women-related issues including domestic violence, equal pay for equal work,  alcoholism, toilet for women, prostitution, forced labour.

Another well-known woman is clearly Chityala Ailamma who played a significant role in the armed struggle of the Telangana movement, particularly the peasant struggle led by communists against the zamindars inspiring many people.

The peasants were agitating against forced labour and eviction from their land who eventually joined the struggle for separate Telangana. Several attempts were made by landlords and goondas to get Ailamma’s land but all failed as peasants united and fought against it inspiring lot of other men and women.

She actively resisted all the oppressive practices of the patriarchal society.

She mobilized women organising protests and rallies from the rural areas of Telangana to participate in the struggle. She educated women on their rights and encouraged them to come forward and take part in the movement.

She faced arrested and jailed many times.

Freedom fighter Ms G.Susheela  a guerrilla fighter from Warangal district was part of the armed Telangana Rebellion against the Nizam government and the British. She was part of the underground cell of the Communist Party of India.

She mobilized peasants and was involved in undertaking secret propaganda to oust the government. She was imprisoned many times.

Duvvuri Subbamma a freedom fighter and social activist also from the Warangal district was actively involved in the Telangana Rebellion against Nizam and British rule. She also contributed to the upliftment of women and worked closely with  Mahatma Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu. She went to prison many times.

She worked for women’s education and established schools for girls in Rajahmundry. She also founded the Women’s Education Society to promote education for girls.

She urged for promotion of the rights of women in Indian society and fought for right to vote, equal pay for equal work, and an end to child marriage and dowry. She became a  Congress Rajya Sabha Member.

There were many others who made great contributions in the spread of women’s education, women’s empowerment and many other areas of social welfare. The greatness of these leaders lay in the fact they inspired large sections of women to come out and fight for their rights and place in society as well fight against any oppressive regime.

Some well-known names would be Ms Sarojini Naidu, Sanghamitra Lakshmi Bai, Chennaboina  Kamalamma , Mallu Swarajam, Arutla Kamala Devi.

  • Biden gets chance to redefine World Bank role

Biden gets chance to redefine World Bank role

    [ad_1]

The path ahead is littered with obstacles for the U.S.

The Biden administration will need to identify a leader with the ability to wrangle a giant bureaucratic institution. It will have to guide the bank’s other leading shareholders, including China, through an organizational overhaul to focus on climate concerns on a much larger scale. And an expanded climate change agenda might eventually require a substantial capital increase from the bank’s 189 member countries — a move that could prove difficult since it would require approval of the U.S. Congress, where Republican lawmakers have been critical of both the bank and the climate agenda.

What’s more, it’s no guarantee that the U.S. president will get to choose the next leader — and that the choice will be an American. That’s a tradition some other governments have begun to resist, especially since the position is expected to grow in importance as major shareholder nations push the bank to become a leader on global issues like future pandemics and cross-border conflicts, as well as climate change.

Whoever takes over will have to balance the agenda of the U.S., the bank’s largest shareholder, with concerns from other countries that fear a move away from the institution’s core mandates of fighting poverty and funding economic development projects within national borders.

“The world wants to move quickly, but we have to move in a way that builds consensus and recognizes that not all 189 members see the tradeoffs and the balance between global challenges and country-focused development in the same way,” said Masood Ahmed, president of the Center for Global Development, a think tank. “That’s what the job is going to be for the next president, how do you build a way forward?”

Malpass says he stepped down from his post voluntarily. But pressure from the Biden administration on the leader of the world’s top development organization over its climate agenda helped push him to the exit.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in recent months repeatedly and publicly pressured the bank to deliver on reforms that aim to turn the institution into a climate finance powerhouse. The administration’s climate czar John Kerry, a leading contender for the job, has also urged the bank to do more.

Malpass, a former senior Treasury Department official who was appointed to the post by President Donald Trump in 2019, came under fire last September for comments in which he cast doubt on the science underpinning concerns about climate change. Those remarks were condemned by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and he later walked them back, but it led to calls for fundamental reforms of the bank to speed financing of the transition to greener energy.

The remarks complicated Malpass’s position, but Yellen has also spoken positively about some of the World Bank’s climate initiatives during his tenure. The outgoing World Bank chief was recognized by the administration as being generally well-liked among the bank’s nearly 16,000 staff, and his response to the pandemic was held in high regard by member countries.

Still, Yellen has viewed the World Bank as a key linchpin for the global response to climate change.

“The world cannot afford to delay or lower our ambitions,” she said in a speech outlining her views last October. “The current challenges are urgent. That is why I, along with leaders from a broad group of countries, will be calling on World Bank management at the Annual Meetings next week to work with shareholders to develop a World Bank evolution roadmap by December. Deeper work should begin by the spring.”

“She’s calling for fundamental reform, and they’re going to start with the World Bank,” said Kevin Gallagher, director of Boston University’s Global Development Policy Center. “She charged the management to come up with the plan, knowing that a few months ago, the guy who is the head of it denied climate change.”

“This agenda is not his. It’s Janet Yellen’s,” he added.

A World Bank spokesperson pointed to Malpass’s public remarks on his resignation and declined to comment further.

Malpass, in media interviews following his announcement that he would step down by July, dismissed suggestions that he was forced out. He stressed that he left on his own terms. He also defended his climate record at the bank, noting that the institution delivered a record level of climate finance — $32 billion — in fiscal 2022.

“This is a good time for the transition at the bank and a good time for me personally,” Malpass said in an interview with Devex, a publication that covers the development sector.

One person close to Malpass said the differences between him and the Biden administration were “overblown.”

“I think he was tired of the job,” the person said. “The administration’s reform agenda is still pretty amorphous, so it’s not as if he was opposing specific policy preferences.”

Malpass showed support for the initiative, releasing a 20-page roadmap on the bank’s evolution, but experts said his mixed past on climate change didn’t bode well for a new vision for the bank.

“The process has been managed in a way where [Malpass] was able to save face enough to be able to exit gracefully,” said Jonathan Walters, a former senior World Bank official. “If he had been a climate leader he would have invigorated the institution behind climate. But he wasn’t, so he didn’t.”

Yellen, earlier this month, said the U.S. expected to see ideas “translated into action” over the next few months. The World Bank’s annual spring meetings it holds in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund in April is the next inflection point for the effort.

“[Yellen] and many others had expressed concerns about how he was performing in the role. And he made a decision that it would be in his and the institution’s best interest to move along at a time that could allow for a smooth transition over the months ahead,” said a former Biden administration official.

The job ahead will be a challenge for anyone who takes the helm. Divisions among member countries and within staff are emerging as the bank starts to move forward with its climate agenda. That includes cutting off new financing for projects that use fossil fuels and shift more toward renewables.

“Most of the World Bank staff who are not climate specialists did not believe the directive from the U.S. and EU against funding natural gas projects was productive,” said a person close to Malpass.

Two of the organization’s main branches, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association, did not invest in new fossil fuel finance in fiscal 2021, and the group has not financed upstream oil and gas projects since 2019.

The bank’s new roadmap has raised concerns that traditional efforts aimed at eliminating poverty and funding national development will be sidelined and the move toward climate-friendly projects will become an unfunded mandate for poorer countries.

There’s also fear that most of the climate financing will flow more easily into efforts to mitigate carbon emissions largely produced by wealthier countries rather than for initiatives to help poorer nations already struggling to adapt to the ravages of climate change.

Given the high hurdle of increasing the World Bank’s overall capital, two big challenges facing the next leader will be optimizing the bank’s balance sheets to get more bang out of the institution’s existing capital and mobilizing private capital more than five times greater than it currently is, said Masood of the Center for Global Development.

“There is a need to make sure that reform moves forward,” he said. “You can build consensus around the U.S. and G7 [countries] but the 189 members all need to be sufficiently bought into that.”

Teachers’ scam: Now Calcutta HC judge will play role of investigator

Kolkata: Now a Calcutta High Court judge will play the role of an investigator in the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment irregularities scam in West Bengal.

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, whose verdict last year prompted central agencies like Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to probe, will directly question the panel of interviewers in the recruitment of teachers by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).

His decision on the count has been taken following the complaints by many candidates that the interview process, especially as regards to aptitude test which carries separate marks, was a farce. They alleged that there was no practical test which is an essential part of the aptitude test and many alleged they were relieved of the interview process by the interviews by just asking their and their parents’ names.

In the first phase, Justice Gangopadhyay will interrogate 40 such interviewers in four districts, where such complaints had been maximum. Calcutta High Court sources said that the interrogation process by Justice Gangopadhyay will be very soon and probably during the current month.

The interrogation will be closed-door and the entire proceedings on this count will be in-camera, where none other than the judge, the interviewers and their counsel will be allowed to stay.

Senior High Court counsel Kaushik Gupta said that this is something really unprecedented where a high court judge is playing the role of an investigator. “I have been practicing in the same court for 26 years. I have never heard of such an incident,” he said.

  • Cong alleges Vinod Adani’s ‘central role’ in Adani group’s ‘nefarious activities’

Cong alleges Vinod Adani’s ‘central role’ in Adani group’s ‘nefarious activities’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday alleged that Gautam Adani’s elder brother Vinod Adani is at the centre of financial flows that leverage one group of Adani assets to send loans to another, and asked if this was not worthy of an investigation by the SEBI and the Enforcement Directorate.

Posing a set of three questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the party’s “Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun” series, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that the Adani group has made “misrepresentations” about Vinod Adani’s central role in its “nefarious activities”.

Recently, Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after US-based short seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the business conglomerate whose chairman is Gautam Adani.

The group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

“Just because the PM is ‘Mauni Baba’ on this issue (like on Chinese incursions) it doesn’t mean we stop asking questions of him. Here is HAHK (Hum Adanike Hain Kaun)-14,” Ramesh said on Twitter and posted another set of three questions to the prime minister.

In his statement addressed to Prime Minister Modi posted on Twitter, Ramesh cited allegations made by Hindenburg Research claiming that Vinod Adani “manages a vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities” that have “collectively moved billions of dollars into Indian Adani publicly listed and private entities, often without required disclosure of the related party nature of the deals”.

In its January 29 reply to the charges, the Adani Group stated that “Vinod Adani does not hold any managerial position in any Adani listed entities or their subsidiaries and has no role in their day to day affairs”, Ramesh pointed out.

“Despite the Adani Group’s claims distancing itself from Vinod Adani, in repeated public filings the group has described Vinod Adani as an intrinsic part of the Adani Group. For instance, this memorandum filed with the Bombay Stock Exchange in 2020 for a Rs 400 crore debt private placement clearly states: ‘Adani Group means S.B. Adani Family Trust, Adani Properties Private Limited, Adani Tradeline LLP, Gautam Adani, Rajesh Adani, Vinod S. Adani and all companies and entities controlled directly or indirectly by S.B. Adani Family Trust or Adani Properties Private Limited or Adani Tradeline LLP or Gautam Adani or Rajesh Adani or Vinod S. Adani, separately or collectively,” the Congress leader claimed in his statement.

Posing questions to Prime Minister Modi, Ramesh asked why is his “close friend lying so blatantly” to investors and to the public.

“Are the various investigative agencies that you have freely deployed against political parties, media and non-subservient businesspersons ever going to be used to investigate your cronies even when they are caught red-handed?” Ramesh asked.

On September 16 last year, the Adani Group announced that the Adani family, through Endeavour Trade and Investment Ltd, a special purpose vehicle, has successfully completed the acquisition of Ambuja Cements Ltd and ACC Ltd, he said.

The acquisition catapulted Adani to the rank of India’s second-largest cement producer, Ramesh noted.

“The acquirer’s SEBI filing stated in no uncertain terms that ‘the ultimate beneficial ownership of the acquirer is held by Mr. Vinod Shantilal Adani and Mrs. Ranjanben Vinod Adani’. Is it not a laughable falsehood for the Adani Group to now distance itself from Vinod Adani?” he said.

“An Australian investigation has shown that Vinod Adani’s Pinnacle Trade and Investment, based in Singapore, controls a number of Adani Group assets in Australia. In 2020, Pinnacle entered into a USD 240 million loan agreement with Russia’s now sanctioned VTB Bank, and then went on to lend USD 235 million to a related party, likely connected to the Adani Group according to Forbes magazine,” Ramesh alleged.

Does this not clearly show that Vinod Adani is at the centre of financial flows that leverage one group of Adani assets to send loans to another, as alleged by Hindenburg, he asked.

“Is this not worthy of investigation by SEBI and the Enforcement Directorate?” the Congress general secretary said.

The Congress has demanded a joint parliamentary committee probe into the Adani issue. The opposition party had also stalled proceedings of both Houses of Parliament during the first part of the Budget Session.
