Eyeing national role, KCR pushes for caste census but not Bihar model

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: While Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has been supporting the demand for caste-based census, its government in Telangana may come under pressure from the backward classes (BCs) to conduct a survey in the state on the lines of the exercise being undertaken in Bihar.

Backward classes groups are demanding the K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR)-led government to issue an order to conduct the caste census of BCs in the state as the BJP-led government at the Centre is refusing to undertake the exercise at the national level.

As KCR has changed Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) into BRS to expand the party activities across the country, the BC groups feel that by taking an initiative for a caste census in Telangana, can send the right message to BCs across the country.

    MS Education Academy

These groups have even offered to extend help to BRS in other states if it comes out with an order to conduct the BC caste census in Telangana.

BC Sankshema Sangham national president Jajula Srinivas Goud has urged the KCR to take the initiative in Telangana as this would help him win the hearts of BCs in other states. “If a GO (Government Order) is issued for caste census in Telangana, we are ready to enlighten BCs and OBCs in states where BRS wants to contest,” he said.

He believes that by conducting a caste census KCR can build a national image. “He is trying to project the Telangana model before the entire country to expand BRS in other states. The caste census will further consolidate this Telangana model,” he said.

However, BRS has not yet reacted to this demand. Political observers say that the party has taken a stand in support of the caste census but it will tread cautiously on taking any step on its own which may politically boomerang.

The ruling party may skirt the issue in the run-up to Assembly elections scheduled later this year. Some leaders have already mentioned that the power of conducting the census rests with the Centre.

Chairman of Telangana State Commission for Backward Classes, Vakulabarnam Krishna Mohan Rao has demanded that the Centre transfer the subject to the concurrent list. He claimed that the state government is committed to conducting a caste census of BCs but it is for the Centre to facilitate this.

In October 2021, Telangana Assembly passed a resolution seeking caste wise census of the Backward Class to be conducted while holding the general census for 2021.

KCR had told the Assembly that BCs constitute nearly 50 per cent of Telangana’s population. He pointed out that various political parties and State Assemblies in the country had passed resolutions seeking caste census.

While introducing the resolution, the Chief Minister had said: “In view of the upliftment of poorer sections of the society, it was necessary to maintain accurate statistics for taking up various welfare measures for benefitting the poorest of the poor.”

“…Second Telangana Legislative Assembly hereby with a view to ensure that provisions of clause IV of Article 15, clause V of Article 15 and clause VI of Article 16 regarding the socially and educationally backward classes of citizens as also the provisions of clause VI of Article 243 D and clause VI of Article 243 E regarding backward classes of citizens urges the Central government that the caste wise census of backward classes of citizens be conducted while holding the general census for 2021,” reads the resolution.

KCR argues that the caste census, as part of the Census, is necessary to identify socially, economically, and educationally backward communities and increase reservations proportionate to their population.

He slammed the BJP government at the Centre for submitting an affidavit in the Supreme Court, expressing its inability to take up the caste-based census in the country. He found a mismatch between the population and the reservation extended to Scheduled Caste (SCs) and said there was a need to increase the existing reservations for SC communities from the existing 15 per cent owing to a rise in the communities’ population.

He invoked Dr B.R. Ambedkar and said that the Centre must continue with the aspirations of the architect of the Indian Constitution to ensure social justice to the SCs

He pointed out that people belonging to the backward classes and scheduled castes (SCs) are also demanding a caste census. “The SC population was fixed at 15 per cent long back but with authority, I can say that it has now crossed 17 per cent. In some states it even crossed 19 per cent,” he said.

KCR had said that the population of SCs in Telangana was 17 per cent of the total state population, with about 18 lakh Dalit families living across the state.

“But in some districts such as Mancherial, the SC population is 26 per cent. It is 22 per cent in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, 21 per cent in Jangaon, Khammam, Rangareddy, and Vikarabad, and 20 per cent in Karimnagar. Hyderabad has the lowest SC population with about 11 per cent,” he said, quoting the Samagra Kutumba Survey or comprehensive household survey, conducted by the state government in 2014.

The BRS leader has also found “fault” with the Modi government for not holding the census exercise in the country. He pointed out that the process of census began way back in 1871 and it continued uninterrupted till 2011.

He pointed out that even during the two world wars, it didn’t stop. KCR said that it’s only through census does a government know what the situation is in the country. He alleged that the Modi government is not conducting a census because it was afraid of people knowing the facts.

KCR argued that caste census of backward classes would help in evolving appropriate policies and programmes for their welfare.

“The Centre is saying it’s a sensitive issue. Why it’s a sensitive issue. We have a caste system in the country. Why should we be ashamed of it? Are the governments not issuing caste certificates,” he asked.

With the Congress party aggressively taking up the issue of caste census, KCR is also likely to be under pressure to come out with a strategy.

  • NCM Says It Lacks Role In Granting Hindus A Minority Status In Jk

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Clearing its stand on declaring Hindus a minority community in Jammu and Kashmir, The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Monday said that the commission has nothing to do with the granting of minority status to any community in the country.

The Indian Express reported that member NCM, Syed Shahezadi on Monday said that if Government wants to grant minority status to Hindus, including Kashmiri Pandits, in Jammu and Kashmir and parliament wants to enact a law for the same, let them do it.

She said that the decision is out of the commission’s bounds and Supreme Court is the absolute authority to take the final call.

“The commission has categorically made it clear that they are not the law makers and it is for Parliament and the Supreme Court to take a decision on this matter,’’ Shahezadi said.

The NCM member earlier in the day held discussions with UT Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta on implementation of centrally funded welfare schemes for minorities in Jammu and Kashmir.

She further said the NCM aims at setting up minority commissions in every state and UT of the country and the Commission will write to the government for setting up one in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir as well.

Pertinently, Supreme Court in November last year had asked the Centre for completing consultations with states on the demand to grant minority status to Hindus in states where their numbers are below other communities.

This followed the government submission before court that it had received comments from 14 states and UTs and has sent reminders to others to send in their views at the earliest.

  • China’s global influence on downward drift as its lender role turns toxic

China’s global influence on downward drift as its lender role turns toxic

    [ad_1]

United Nations: China’s influence at the world body — a barometer of its global clout — measured by a recent secret electoral vote has shown a downward drift even as it maintains an iron grip on power at the Security Council because of its veto powers.

China went head-to-head against India in elections at the 53-member UN Economic and Social Council for the UN Statistical Commission India polled 46 votes, while China came in third with 19 votes, behind South Korea with 23.

And in a second round of balloting for the second seat on the commission for the Asia Pacific region, China tied with South Korea with 25 votes each, and Seoul got the seat in a draw of lots.

    MS Education Academy

It was a big change for China pushing its goal of global dominance.

The difference between New Delhi and Beijing is stark in a changed situation where China’s largesse increasingly looks like a usurious power play while India is leading the efforts to restructure the crushing debts of the developing countries.

Beijing poured hundreds of billions of dollars into its web of One Belt One Road initiative across the world and the bills are coming due to the recipients.

As the president of the G20, India has positioned itself as the voice of the Global South, while avoiding strident anti-imperialist/anti-neocolonial rhetoric, and this has put India on the opposite side to China, which probably is the biggest direct lender, although other countries and multinational institutions are also in the ranks of lenders..

At the G20 finance ministers meeting in February, India pushed proposals for the big lenders — especially China — to take a “haircut”, write off portions of loans, to give relief to the debtor nations as they struggle from the economic crisis from the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

At the International Monetary Fund-World Bank meetings in Washington this month, India again took centre stage as a co-chair with the heads of those organisations of the Global Sovereign Debt Restructuring Roundtable to find a solution to the debt crisis.

As global polarisation accelerates, China is the leading force on one side of the divide and in a choice between India and China, especially if the ballot is secret, the preference appears to be to the sort of neutral country.

To counter China’s attempts to get elected to international bodies, especially in leadership positions, the foreign ministers of the Quad, made up of India, the US, Japan and Australia, declared their commitment last month to “independent” candidates.

After their meeting, they said in a joint statement: “We will support meritorious and independent candidates for elections in the UN and in international forums to maintain the integrity and impartiality of the international system.”

While China’s grip may loosen in anonymous elections, in open voting it still can use its position as a lender to advantage as it did at the UN Human Rights Council last October when a proposal to discuss China’s alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang province was voted down.

It has a steely hold on the most important body of the UN, the Security Council where it can wield its veto as a permanent member or like any member on its committees like the ones for terrorism sanctions.

It has blocked several times attempts to designate Pakistan-based operatives behind attacks on India as global terrorists, which would place them under international sanctions.

But it has had to relent in some cases under international pressure.

Beijing agreed in January to designating Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Deputy Chief Abdul Rehman Makki after having blocked it earlier.

In 2019, China lifted its block on Masood Azhar of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

But it continues to block adding to the international terrorist list LeT leaders Sajid Mir and Shahid Mahmood, and JeM leader Abdul Rauf Azhar.

In the long-range, Beijing can also block the expansion of the Security Council’s permanent membership, although it is already facing pressure from the African nations, a constituency it ha sought to cultivate.

Organisationally, China uses the power of the purse for influence. It is the second largest contributor to the UN’s budget sending $438 million last year.

It gets it a measure of deference from UN officials.

The former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet admitted that she had been under “tremendous pressure” over a report on China’s human rights violations against the Uyghurs.

She published the report only on her last day in office after delaying its release for several years.

Indian-origin candidates line up for Leicester Mayor role in UK

    [ad_1]

London: Two Indian-origin candidates are lined up to go head-to-head for the post of Leicester Mayor in the local elections coming up in the UK early next month.

Conservative Party councillor Sanjay Modhwadia will compete with Rita Patel, a former Labour councillor who announced her bid recently in order to scrap the role.

Patel, a Rushey Mead councillor from Leicester who will run as an independent, launched her campaign saying the city needed “a fresh start” and promised one of her first jobs will be to remove the mayoral role.

    MS Education Academy

Sitting Labour Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, expressed disappointment at Patel’s exit from the party after she was one of four city councillors suspended for six months for their attempt to scrap the mayor’s office through a vote at a council meeting last month.

Now the Tories have confirmed Modhwadia, a city councillor for North Evington, as their candidate to challenge Soulsby who has held the job since it was created 12 years ago.

He was in the eye of the storm when Leicester witnessed sectarian clashes last September following an India-Pakistan cricket match.

Modhwadia, a local businessman, has been campaigning to push for a “Made in Leicester” brand to improve the city’s perception around the globe.

While the Tories and Rita Patel have both said they want to get rid of the mayoral role, Leicester’s Green Party has promised a public referendum on the matter. The Green Party have chosen Mags Lewis who also stood in 2019, finishing third will be their candidate.

The election is scheduled for May 4 and anyone elected may just go on to have a short stay in office.

“Many local residents have contacted our party in recent months to suggest that this is something we should do and our members have also voted in favour of removing the position of City Mayor,” Richard Tutt, Chair of the City of Leicester Conservatives told Leicester Mercury’.

Many in the eastern England city believe the Leader of the Council system is more democratic and accountable for the people of Leicester.

  • ‘Is Telangana really a role model for other states?’ Bandi mocks KCR

‘Is Telangana really a role model for other states?’ Bandi mocks KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday belittled Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s claim that the state is a role model nationwide.

Speaking to media persons at the party office in Sangareddy on Saturday, he highlighted various issues faced by Telangana.

“Is it in the suicides of farmers? Or non-implementation of promises like the supply of free urea and seeds and loan waiver? Or slashing of all subsidies to the agriculture sector in the name of the Rythu Bandhu scheme? Or not paying salaries to employees on time? Or pushing the state into bankruptcy?” he asked.

    MS Education Academy

On the recent TSPSC question paper leak, Bandi Sanjay repeated his demand to dissolve the board. “The SIT claims to have arrested 15 persons and questioned 104 candidates. Why has no action been taken against K T Rama Rao who has misled the media and the public?” he asked and demanded the IT minister’s resignation with immediate effect.

On a query, if BJP will join hands with Y S Sharmila’s YSRTP (Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party) he said, “I spoke to her over the phone and told we are ready to fight in support of anybody who is meted out injustice. But I also made it clear that we cannot work along with the Congress, as we strongly feel the Congress and the BRS are handed in glove with each other.”

Reacting to the poster war between BJP and BRS, Bandi Sanjay said he does not worry because BJP is in the hearts of the people.

“It is atrocious that the police arrest the BJP workers who pasted posters against the BRS, but keep quiet when the BRS leaders paste posters against Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

Aurangabad clash: AIMIM MP’s key role in dousing communal fire

    [ad_1]

All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) lone MP Syed Imtiyaz Jaleel was instrumental in restoring normally near the Ram temple in the Muslim-dominated area of Kiradpur on Wednesday night.

Communal violence erupted between Hindus and Muslims on the eve of Ram Navami after tensions erupted when a group of 15 Hindutva members, holding saffron flags arrived in the locality on bikes at 11.30 pm and shouted communal slogans.

Jaleel arrived at the location within 15 minutes of the altercation, and issued video statements of clarification busting all false news of the temple in the area being attacked. He managed to pacify over 500 riled-up Muslims and stayed the night on the temple premises alongside priests and 15 police officials of which only 2 were armed, reported Hindustan Times.

    MS Education Academy

“Had the temple been targeted and had I not reached in time, the violence would have spread rapidly across the state,” he said. “Besides the temple priests, a few women were hiding on the first floor, and around 15 policemen too had taken shelter inside. I assured them all that nothing would happen to them and the temple till I was there,” Jaleel was quoted by HT.

“One of the bikes dashed briefly against a bystander and a brawl erupted. A few elderly people, to control the situation, requested the bikers to leave,” said Jaleel.

Jaleel was targeted by Muslim youngsters who accused him of bias few pelted stones at him. He made videos alongside women of the temple stating that they are safe with him which circulated on social media, helping his cause.

He questioned the involvement of the cops, who arrived late.

“When I called the police and the fire department immediately after arriving at the temple, there was no response,” he said.

Notably, no large police force was stationed outside a shrine in the centre of a Muslim mohalla. “To anticipate potential issues, this has traditionally been the practice.”

Areas neglected earlier role model for country now: Jitendra Singh

    [ad_1]

Hiranagar: Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh on Sunday said areas like border districts which were neglected earlier have now become role model for the country.

He said bringing governance at the doorsteps of the people to the last man in the last queue is possible only under Narendra Modi whose endeavour, after being sworn in as the Prime Minister of India in 2014, has been to address the people’s issues on the spot through ‘public darbars’ with district administration.

The governance cannot be restricted to the district headquarters only and a departure from this practice was necessary so that people’s issues could be addressed on the spot with district administration, Singh said at a ‘public darbar’ here.

He asserted that development has reached the last man in the queue under PM Narendra Modi, and said the areas which were neglected earlier like the border districts under the previous governments have now become the role models for the country, the best example being the border district of Kathua, “which is considered now the epitome of development and governance in the country”, according to an official statement.

Singh, who is the Lok Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur constituency, said it is for the first time after 20 years that hundreds of acres of border land have been brought under cultivation “bringing back the lost smiles on the faces of border dwellers in Kathua” which has been possible only under the present government which believes in the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ under PM Modi.

He said Kathua is now considered the role model of development in the country due to various development initiatives undertaken there.

During the ‘public darbar’, Singh addressed certain issues on the spot related to the Delhi-Katra express highway such as land compensation, crossings at certain points for public convenience.

The minister directed the top officials of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) present during the public darbar to speed up the work on the express highway and also look into the genuine issues raised by the public in a time bound manner, the statement issued by the Personnel Ministry said.

  • Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan assumes role of Starbucks Chief Executive Officer

Indian-origin Laxman Narasimhan assumes role of Starbucks Chief Executive Officer

    [ad_1]

New York: Indian-origin executive Laxman Narasimhan on Monday officially assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of global coffee giant Starbucks, joining the growing cohort of business leaders originally hailing from India at the helm of global corporations.

In September last year, Starbucks had announced that Narasimhan would become the company’s next chief executive officer and a member of the Starbucks Board of Directors.

Following the global search for the new leader of Starbucks to succeed company founder and now former CEO, Howard Schultz, Narasimhan joined Starbucks as incoming CEO on October 1, 2022 after relocating from London to the Seattle area.

“Effective today, Laxman Narasimhan has assumed the role of chief executive officer and will join the company’s board of directors,” Starbucks said in a statement.
Narasimhan will lead Starbucks Annual Shareholder Meeting on March 23.

“As he ascends into the role, Narasimhan will continue engaging the leadership team, sharing his early learnings and insights and assessing opportunities for the company as they chart a path forward,” the company said.

Narasimhan, the former CEO of UK-based consumer health, hygiene and nutrition multinational Reckitt Benckiser, brings to Starbucks nearly 30 years of experience leading global consumer goods businesses and advising retail, grocery, restaurant and e-commerce companies.

The company said that over the past five months, he has embarked on a unique immersion experience, traveling to work with employees in over 30 stores, manufacturing plants and in support centers around the world, “earning his barista certification” along the way.

“I am humbled to officially step into my role as Starbucks chief executive officer, leading our incredible team of more than 450,000 green apron partners around the world,” the company statement quoted Narasimhan as saying.

He said the foundation laid by Schultz “building from scratch an iconic global brand fuelled by a lasting passion to uplift humanity” is truly remarkable, “and I am honoured to have the opportunity to build on this deep heritage.

“As a human connection business, we have limitless possibilities to deliver for our partners, our customers, our investors and our communities through every cup and every connection. I am excited to work alongside our partners worldwide to unlock the limitless future of Starbucks.”

With his appointment, Narasimhan joined the growing list of Indian-origin CEOs at the helm of global giants, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna. Indra Nooyi had served as PepsiCo’s CEO for 12 years before stepping down in 2018.

Former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga was last month nominated by US President Joe Biden to lead the World Bank.

Narasimhan holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Pune, India.

He also has a Master of Arts in German and International Studies from The Lauder Institute at The University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.

Starbucks said that it has unveiled a company-wide reinvention strategy and continues to deliver on more than USD 1 billion in investments in retail partners and stores for prioritized areas such as increased pay and sick time accrual, new financial well-being benefits, modernized training and collaboration, store innovation and equipment and the celebration of coffee.

Independent Starbucks Board of Directors chair Mellody Hobson said in the statement that Narasimhan’s “intensive immersion” into the business coupled with his extensive experience as a proven brand builder, innovator and operator have uniquely prepared him to lead Starbucks into its next phase of growth.

“This immersion has deepened Laxman’s understanding of Starbucks culture and values. In this time of learning and listening, he has already won the hearts and minds of our partners around the world,” Hobson said.

Previously, Narasimhan has served as an executive in various leadership roles at PepsiCo, including as global chief commercial officer, where he was responsible for the company’s long-term growth strategy and commercial capabilities.

Prior to PepsiCo, he spent 19 years at McKinsey & Company, where he advised companies across the retail, consumer goods, and healthcare industries in the US, Asia, and India.

He is a trustee of the Brookings Institution, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the UK Prime Minister’s Build Back Better Council and a member of Verizon’s Board of Directors, according to the Starbucks website.
