New Delhi: Jailed gangster Tillu Tajpuriya, an accused in Delhi’s Rohini court shootout case was killed allegedly by rival gang members in Tihar jail, prison officials said on Tuesday.

According to the prison officials, Tillu Tajpuriya was immediately taken to Delhi’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared dead.

“This morning around 7am, information was received from DDU Hospital regarding two Undertrial prisoners who were brought to the hospital from Tihar Jail. One of them, Sunil alias Tilu was brought in an unconscious state.

He was declared brought dead later. Another person, Rohit is undergoing treatment and is out of danger,” Akshat Kaushal, Additional DCP West District, Delhi Police said.

The police said that a prisoner named Yogesh Tunda, who was lodged in Jail No. 8 and other members of the rival gang attacked Tillu, who was lodged in Jail No. 9 with an iron grill.

“Yogesh alias Tunda and Deepak alias Teetar attacked Tillu Tajpuriya by breaking the iron grills of the ward which separated both gangs in the same ward,” the official said.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.

On September 24 last year, two shooters shot and killed Jitendra Gogi in Rohini Court No. 207 during a shootout.

Sources had said in September last year, a day before the Rohini shootout, (shooters) Umang and Jagdeep took weapons from a crook named Rakesh Tajpuria in Murthal.

“Then on the same day, Umang and Jagdeep took the dress of lawyers from a person near AIIMS. Meanwhile, Tillu was in constant touch with both of them through WhatsApp calls from jail,” sources said.

Recently, Tillu’s name cropped up during the investigation of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a terror case.

His killers are alleged to be the members of the Jitender Gogi gang.

Will be grossly misunderstood if I offer coffee to a political rival, says Sitharaman

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Political discourse has deteriorated in the country, and there is a dearth of cordiality, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.

Simple acts like offering a coffee to a political opponent can be “grossly misunderstood”, the senior minister said.

Sitharaman, who also handles the corporate affairs portfolio, said this was not the case in the past and recalled the bonhomie between Chakravarti Rajagopalachari of the Congress and P Ramamurti of the Communist Party of India in Madras Presidency and Tamil Nadu despite being staunch political rivals.

    MS Education Academy

The minister said Rajaji used to carry coffee from his home in a flask, and interjected Ramamurti mid-speech to offer him the coffee, after which they went back to their respective ideological positions.

“I can’t imagine giving a cup of coffee (now) it can be grossly misunderstood,” Sitharaman said, speaking at the launch of veteran banker N Vaghul’s book ‘Reflections’ here.

Sitharaman said there was some personal regard for one another even in the most bitter of the political rivalries and added that leaders were full of amity and cordiality then.

She also made references to Vaghul’s frequent run-ins with the political executives and added that wielding of power by a person or those around him can make or break a career.

The minister said she had also heard about how bankers had to constantly face interferences by the political executive Vaghul quit from a state-owned bank at 47 and also alluded to a specific instance of a Minister of State trying to assert power in the absence of his senior, a Cabinet Minister.

The minister also said that for forty years, each government competed with the previous one for showing that they are more socialist than the dispensation that preceded it.

She said that for the first time in India’s history, the budget presented by her in 2021 had a mention of the word “privatisation”, courtesy of the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Vaghul, a veteran banker, said the degradation of values in the country is “bothering” him, pointing specifically to corruption symbolises not only a person’s greed but also a decline in moral values.

He said the reforms of 1991 were half-baked as they did not fully dismantle the state-run enterprises, and called himself a servant of the free market ever since he heard Rajaji attack communists.

Speaking at the same event, veteran banker KV Kamath called Vaghul, with whom he had a long association, as the builder of a new construct for banking in India.

Industrialist Ajay Piramal, whose company counted on Vaghul as a board member for over 25 years, said apart from building ICICI Bank into a formidable bank, Vaghul also was central in the establishment of the rating agency Crisil and also encouraged diversity.

  • Think Manchin has coal connections? Meet his rival.

Think Manchin has coal connections? Meet his rival.

    [ad_1]

west virginia state of the state 12162

His entrance catapults the race into one of the highest-profile political battles of 2024, with the possibility of showcasing both men’s personal ties to an energy industry that President Joe Biden and other world leaders have promised to largely replace with renewable power.

Manchin, perhaps the most vulnerable Senate Democrat, confounded members of his party by stalling major legislation aimed at reducing fossil fuel use. But by ultimately voting for the Inflation Reduction Act, which pours hundreds of billions of dollars into clean energy, he risks losing support among voters with ties to coal.

Both men have earned millions from their families’ fossil fuel businesses.

Over the years, Justice’s family coal businesses have collected millions of dollars in state and federal fines for pollution and public safety violations. The businesses have a long history of ignoring those fines or paying them after years of protracted legal efforts.

Manchin’s political position has benefited his business interests, which include a family company that trucks discarded coal to a high-emitting power plant near his hometown. The facility is the only plant in West Virginia that still uses waste coal to generate electricity.

Accusations around conflicts of interest have followed Justice, 72, and Manchin, 75, through much of their careers. But that has not slowed their political rise in West Virginia, said Rob Cornelius, the former chair of the Wood County Republican Executive Committee and a critic of Justice, whom he described as “Teflon as hell.”

“We expect our leaders to be a little dirty, I guess is the nice way of putting it,” Cornelius said. “No one here cares about what I would call government and business corruption, and that’s probably an indictment of our voters.”

A spokesperson for Justice did not respond to requests for comment.

Manchin has said he will not make a decision about his political future until the end of the year. That could include running for reelection, launching an independent bid for president or retiring. Manchin has been increasingly critical of the Biden administration and his fellow Democrats in recent months, particularly over energy issues.

“Senator Manchin continues to consider the best way he can serve his state and country,” Sam Runyon, a Manchin spokesperson, said in a statement. “But make no mistake, he will win whatever race he enters.”

West Virginia remains almost entirely reliant on coal for its power, even as other states move toward cheaper renewables and natural gas. The state gets 90 percent of its power from coal, compared with about 20 percent nationally (Greenwire, Jan. 26). In recent months, Justice has fought to keep the state’s largest coal-fired power plant from closing — a move that could cost ratepayers more than $30 million in additional monthly costs.

Justice’s financial disclosures show that his family’s sprawling business empire extends to more than a hundred businesses, including in energy, hospitality, health care, resorts and timber. Justice’s family owns dozens of coal-related businesses based in West Virginia, Virginia, Alabama and elsewhere, his financial disclosures show.

Those companies, many of which operate mines, have faced millions of dollars in fines for air pollution and unsafe working conditions. They have missed numerous deadlines to pay those fines after being sued by the U.S. attorney’s office and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Justice has also faced liabilities related to land reclamation on the surface mines owned by his companies. At one time, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy estimated that the companies had about $200 million in such liabilities.

Recently, the Bluestone Coke facility in Alabama, which is owned by Justice’s family, had to pay a fine of almost $1 million for releasing an excessive amount of toxic air pollution that affected a Black neighborhood for years, a ProPublica investigation revealed. The Birmingham facility repeatedly ignored public health concerns, resulting in the largest fine being proposed in the history of the Jefferson County Board of Health.

Justice’s family is considering a sale of Bluestone, The Wall Street Journal reported last month.

In 2009, Justice bought the 6,500-acre Greenbrier luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs and then built a casino underneath it. The resort was home to a secret congressional bunker that has since been decommissioned. He spoke there Thursday evening as he officially announced his candidacy.

The personal ties that Justice and Manchin have to the coal industry may raise questions in such a high-profile race, but that is “not new information for people in West Virginia,” said Conrad Lucas, a former chair of the West Virginia Republican Party.

He said voters have looked at those entanglements and repeatedly elected both men.

Justice, despite his wealth, has cultivated the image of someone who is approachable to the average West Virginian, Lucas said, “despite him being a figure who owns the Greenbrier.”

“He has an ability to connect with voters that you wouldn’t think an incredibly wealthy person would, but voters have found him incredibly relatable,” Lucas said.

Justice is one of the most popular governors in the country. A Morning Consult poll conducted in January found that Justice was the fifth-most-liked governor, with a 64 percent approval rating.

Justice leads Manchin 52 percent to 42 percent among likely voters, according to a poll from the Senate Leadership Fund, the super political action committee aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). The only other declared candidate in the race, Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.), trails Manchin by 15 percentage points, the poll showed.

West Virginia is among the reddest states in the country. Former President Donald Trump, who could once again be at the top of the ticket, won the state by almost 40 percentage points in 2020. The Senate race, and especially the Republican primary, are widely expected to be the most expensive in state history. A poll released earlier this month by National Public Affairs showed Justice outpacing Mooney by 31 points.

Mooney “looks forward to a robust debate of the issues important to all West Virginians including Justice’s record,” his campaign manager, John Findlay, said in a statement before the governor entered the race.

If he wins, Justice would arrive in Washington not as a power broker, as Manchin has been in the closely divided Senate, but as a backbench Republican. His personal wealth and potential for raising campaign contributions could elevate his standing within the Republican Party, but he wouldn’t be the decisive vote on major legislation.

But there are similarities between Justice and Manchin that go beyond making money on coal. Manchin’s close friend and former chief of staff, Larry Puccio, has worked for both men’s campaigns.

At the federal level, Puccio has leveraged his friendship with Manchin to receive lucrative lobbying contracts, as POLITICO’s E&E News has reported. In Charleston, Puccio works as a lobbyist for multiple businesses owned by Justice, including the Greenbrier and Bluestone. Puccio has also worked as chair of Justice’s transition team — as he did for Manchin.

Justice’s extensive business holdings won’t necessarily make him stand out in Congress, said Craig Holman, who lobbies on ethics and campaign finance issues for Public Citizen, the progressive consumer rights group founded by Ralph Nader.

“Lawmakers here in Congress do have very strong conflicts of interest and business interests, and they’re not expected to recuse themselves from votes that affect those interests,” he said. “And it is a conflict of interest, an obvious one, and it’s rather prevalent throughout Congress and not really subject to regulation.”

Modi asks youth to script a new Kerala, slams traditional rival fronts

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while speaking to the youths who had turned up in huge numbers on Monday evening said the BJP will always be with the youth, while the traditional fronts have failed in their duty to lift the youth.

“Over the years a lot of opportunities for the youth in Kerala were lost due to the ideological difference of opinion between two traditional political fronts. While one party gave more importance to develop their party, the other political front gave more emphasis to one family and both of them failed the youths,” said Modi.

“We the BJP are trying hard to improve exports from here, but some here are engaged in gold smuggling and are letting the youth down,” said Modi.

    MS Education Academy

He said this at the SH College ground while speaking to more than 20,000 youths waiting for him.

“The country is progressing rapidly and I want Kerala also to make use of it and be part of it. I want that you the youth should script a new history for Kerala and you should take the lead for it and I am ready to follow you,” said Modi to huge applause.

He then spoke about the huge potential that tourism offers to Kerala and asked the youth to make use of it.

“During my Mann Ki Baat radio programme I do get a lot of letters and in the upcoming 100th edition of it, I will again take up the issues of the youth,” said Modi.

Turning to political issues of how the BJP is being perceived, he told the youth that the country is getting divided in the name of caste, creed, religion and the youth should come forward against it.

“Be it in northeast or in Goa, some big communities have appreciated the BJP and in Kerala also there is scope for change in this respect,” added Modi.

Modi arrived at Kochi around 5 p.m. for a two-day trip to Kerala, dressed in typical local style and surprised many when he decided to walk a good part of the 1.8 kms as part of his roadshow.

While the original programme was that he will be in a vehicle, he surprised everyone when he decided to walk down the streets.

Thousands of people were waiting for long and they were taken aback when they saw Modi walking past waving to them.

As he walked the people showered flowers on him.

After walking for about 20 minutes he got into his vehicle but stood and greeted the people waiting on either side of the road and also on top of the buildings.

He reached the venue to a tumultuous welcome and greeted the people on the dais. The star of the moment appeared to be Anil Antony, son of the country’s longest serving Defence Minister A.K. Antony, who had joined the BJP earlier this month.

Seeing Anil, Modi stopped near him, patted him on his shoulder and exchanged pleasantries.

On Tuesday he will reach the state capital to flag off Kerala’s first Vande Bharat train and launch a slew of projects. Around noon he will fly to Surat.

  • Trump storms into Florida to oust rival DeSantis from 2024 race

Trump storms into Florida to oust rival DeSantis from 2024 race

    [ad_1]

Washington: Even as the Republican Party is still weighing in options between former US President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump is wasting no time to oust his rival DeSantis from the race in the 2024 primaries drumming up support for himself on the Governor’s home turf.

Republican Congressman Michael Waltz, who replaced DeSantis in the House, made it clear on Thursday that he won’t be supporting his predecessor’s expected run for the White House. He has endorsed Trump.

The Combat-decorated Green Beret Waltz has virtually waltzed his way to join as many as 11 of the 20-member Florida Republican delegation that has backed Trump.

    MS Education Academy

Trump has also unveiled the endorsements of Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Carlos Gimenez in a fundraising email on Wednesday shaking DeSantis out of his comfort zone.

Waltz, media reports said, has over the years carefully threaded the needle when it comes to Trump, avoiding any criticism of Trump, simultaneously rejecting and voting against policies pushed by his administration. But he announced he was backing Trump in 2024 on Thursday morning.

“We need bold & experienced leadership back in the White House. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president,” Waltz tweeted.

Meanwhile, DeSantis reached Washington to network with influential Republicans prior to an expected presidential run, but the former President has methodically racked up endorsements from Florida in a major blow to the Governor’s 2024 prospects.

Trump has pre-empted DeSaantish even before he could get his campaign off the ground, political observers said in their analysis of fast paced political developments. .

“I generally don’t put a lot of weight on endorsements. At the same time though, when your calling card is Florida like it is for Ron, and your folks are defecting in your own backyard, that’s never a good sign,” Ford O’Connell, a Florida-based GOP strategist, said.

It’s quite apparent that Trump’s campaign aimed at knocking out the plank from under DeSantis’s legs before he can be really up and running.

The sole Florida member, Laurel Lee, the governor’s former secretary of state, endorsed DeSantis at his Capitol Hill event this week.

“As Ron DeSantis Secretary of State, I had the honour of witnessing first hand his unparalleled leadership under pressure, his chapter and his commitment to core conservative principles,” Lee said in a statement.

“It was my honour to serve in his administration and it is my honour today to endorse him for president of the US.”

Republican sources claimed Trump is scheduled to host a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort Thursday night for all Florida Republicans, who have endorsed his White House bid, soon after DeSantis held his reception in Washington, D.C.

Byron Donalds, the closest to DeSantis of any Republican in the House delegation, has literally dropped a bomb over DeSantis while endorsing Trump.

At one stage, the DeSantis loyalist had called him “America’s governor”.

The governor also appointed Donalds’ wife to the Florida Gulf University board of trustees in March 2022.

“It felt like a small little bomb detonated in our state here when some within DeSantis’s operation, not the governor himself, started frantically reaching out to other Florida members who had yet to endorse,” a Republican political strategist said.

While DeSantis’ political strategist Ron Tyson was reaching out to the Florida Republicans for support, most of them were offended.

DeSantis did not approach them directly, even as Trump took the trouble of personally meeting the Florida members to garner support, which he has managed to get, reports said.

When DeSantis was in Congress, he was a loner, with not much of a network with the politicians inWashington D.C.

“I think the way I’d describe Governor DeSantis is transactional. He is only out for himself, and that has rubbed many of my colleagues and myself the wrong way,” a Florida Republican who recently endorsed Trump but desired anonymity.

Aides working with Republicans in the delegation claimed they found it difficult to get the Governor on the phone to discuss key issues in their districts.

A poll from Yahoo News/YouGov, conducted April 14-17, showed Trump leading DeSantis by 16 percentage points (52 per cent to 36 per cent).

But two weeks ago, the former president led DeSantis by 26 percentage points (57 per cent to 31 per cent). A recent University of New Hampshire poll, which found DeSantis leading Trump by 12 points in January, now finds Trump leading DeSantis by 20 points in April, Politico reported.

There are still a number of Florida lawmakers who are keeping their options open such as Representatives Kat Cammack, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Mario Diaz-Balart.

A number of political strategists and consultants in the state are doing the same, The Washington Examiner said.

Some Republicans in the state are alarmed over Trump’s endorsements and wanted members to set aside their personal feelings and assess which of the two candidates is most likely to win the general election in 2024.

Former Representative Francis Rooney, a known Trump critic retired in 2021, said: “Trump cannot win the general election. It’s not going to happen. It didn’t work in the midterms. We had a bunch of defective candidates, election deniers, they didn’t win. What we should have had was a 20-seat majority, and that’s not what happened.”

  • Odisha: BJD, BJP stage rival dharna on LoP’s misbehaviour’ , worsening’ law and order

Odisha: BJD, BJP stage rival dharna on LoP’s misbehaviour’ , worsening’ law and order

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The women’s wing of the ruling BJD in Odisha staged a dharna here on Thursday demanding removal of Jaynarayan Mishra from the post of the Leader of Opposition for allegedly misbehaving with a woman police officer in Sambalpur.

Mishra on Wednesday stirred controversy by allegedly pushing the woman police officer during a BJP protest in Sambalpur. The incident took place in front of the district collector’s office during the party’s statewide stir on “worsening” law and order in the coastal state.

The saffron party too staged a dharna near Raj Bhavan, claiming that there was a bid to eliminate Mishra, also the BJP MLA from Sambalpur, for criticising the state government in connection with the assassination of ex-minister Naba Kishore Das.

Members of the BJD and BJP also burnt effigies of the Leader of Opposition and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik respectively.

Holding placards and banners, the BJD activists who were on a dharna on MG Road, accused Mishra of pushing and assaulting the woman police officer.

The protesters also demanded an apology from Mishra.

BJD spokesperson Shreemayee Mishra claimed Jaynarayan Mishra was a “habitual offender”, with 14 cases, including murder, registered against him.

Meanwhile, members of the saffron party demanded the chief minister’s resignation for allegedly failing to maintain law and order in the state.

The BJP for the last two days was holding demonstration across the state over the “worsening” law and order following the assassination of Naba Kishore Das last month allegedly by a former policeman.

Based on the complaint of Dhanupali Police Station Inspector in-charge Anita Pradhan, the law enforcers in Sambalpur had on Wednesday booked Mishra under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Meanwhile, Sambalpur Mahila BJP also lodged a complaint against Anita Pradhan, alleging that she had pushed and misbehaved with the Leader of Opposition.

A video (not verified by PTI) that went viral showed Mishra assaulting the woman police officer in the western Odisha city.

The BJP rank and file, including its senior leaders, came down heavily on the state government alleging that Mishra was being framed by the BJD after he launched a scathing attack on the state government following Naba Kishore Das murder case.

“It is a plot created by the BJD to fix Mishra as he was attacking the government on its weak points. The woman police officer instead misbehaved with the Leader of Opposition, who is considered as second to the chief minister in the Assembly,” said BJP state in-charge D Purendeswari.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the incident was “pre-planned” and “sponsored” by the government to “cover up its inefficiency and wrongdoings”.

“Jaynarayan Mishra was not appointed the Leader of Opposition as a charity from Naveen Patnaik. He was appointed by the Parliamentary Board of the BJP The law and order situation is fast deteriorating in the state.

“Such pre-planned and state-sponsored acts do not last long in a democracy,” Pradhan told reporters.

IG, North Range, Deepak Kumar said the police has registered a case against Mishra on the basis of a complaint by the woman police officer.

The BJP’s complaint against the police officer has been registered as a station diary, Kumar said.

The complaint by the saffron party will be probed while investigating the allegations made by the woman police officer, Kumar said.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi said, “We know an incident has taken place and the law will take its own course. The incident is worrisome both for the party and Mishra”.

Meanwhile, Mishra alleged that a group of BJD goons Thursday reached the circuit house at Sambalpur where he was staying.

“The BJD goons had come to eliminate me,” Mishra told reporters in Sambalpur.

The BJP MLA from Sambalpur also accused the Dhanupali Police Station Inspector in-charge Anita Pradhan of pushing him.

“The IIC, who was involved in corrupt practices, had intentionally shoved me. She stamped on my feet and pushed me twice,” Mishra told reporters.
