Mercury Rises Amid Forecast For Cloudy To Dry Weather In J&K
Srinagar, Mar 11: Amid forecast for partly cloudy to mainly dry weather, the minimum temperature recorded a slight rise in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.
A meteorological department official here told GNS that generally cloudy weather with light rain at isolated to scattered places was expected on March 13 and from 14th-17th, generally cloudy weather with dry weather was expected.
“Afternoon thunderstorms at isolated places can’t be ruled out,” the official said, adding, “generally cloudy with intermittent light rain with thunder at scattered places during March 18-21st.”
Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 3.4°C against 3.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 2.4°C against 2.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against minus 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of 5.3°C against 4.3°C on the previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.0°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 5.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 1.2°C against 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 15.5°C against 14.6°C on the previous night. It was 1.4°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 4.3°C (above normal by 0.2°C), Batote 9.2°C (above normal by 3.3°C), Katra 13.7°C (2.2°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 6.6°C (3.5°C above normal).
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil, he said, recorded a low of minus 4.8°C and minus 16.7°C respectively. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: As mainly dry weather continues, the minimum temperature recorded increase in Kashmir Valley as well as most parts of Jammu division on Friday.
A meteorological department official here told the news agency GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 3.2°C against 2.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Three arrested in Bangladesh building explosion case as death toll rises to 21

Dhaka: Bangladesh authorities arrested three people in connection with the deadly explosion in a multi-storey building at a crowded area here in the national capital as rescue workers on Thursday recovered one more body from the rubble, raising the death toll to 21.
The “earthquake-like” explosion at the building at Old Dhaka’s crowded Gulistan area on Tuesday also injured over 100 people.
Three people including the owner of the building were arrested and remanded to custody, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed on Thursday placed building owner Wahidur Rahman, his brother Matiur Rahman and businessman Motaleb Mintu each on a two-day remand.
Meanwhile, rescue workers on Thursday recovered one more body from the rubble of the building, raising the death toll to 21.
The body was identified as that of a 38-year-old manager of Bangladesh Sanitary situated in the basement of the building, bdnews24 news portal reported.
Firefighters retrieved 20 bodies in the first two days of the rescue mission in the building, which was declared risky in the wake of the explosion.
The cause of the explosion could not be known immediately, but local residents suspected chemicals illegally stored inside the building, mostly used as an office and business complex, might have sparked the blast.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said Wednesday that the country has sufficient expertise to carry out an investigation into the explosion.
A four-member probe body headed by Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (Operation and maintenance), has been formed to look into the cause of the explosion. The committee has been tasked to submit its report within five working days.
Tuesday’s explosion occurred two days after another exposition at a building in Dhaka’s Science Laboratory area that killed three people and injured several others.
Last week, seven people were killed in an explosion at a private oxygen plant in the southeastern port city of Chattogram, injuring dozens of others.

Death toll in Egypt’s train crash rises to four

Cairo: The casualty toll of the train derailment on Tuesday night in Qalyub, an Egyptian city about 23 km north of the capital Cairo, has risen to four killed and 23 injured, the authorities said on Wednesday.
All the wounded had been transferred to three national hospitals, 11 of whom were released after receiving necessary treatment, according to the Egyptian health ministry, Xinhua news agency reported.
The train went through the “closed semaphore” at the Qalyub Train Station in Qalyubia Governorate and headed toward a blocked railway before colliding with the protection at the end of the railway, the Egyptian National Railways said in a statement on Tuesday.
As a result, the locomotive and the first carriage were derailed, the statement said, adding the Egyptian Transport Ministry formed a committee to investigate the accident.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Public Prosecutor also ordered an investigation into the Qalyub train collision.
Egypt’s railway system has long been troubled by poorly maintained equipment and poor administration, which frequently results in train derailments and crashes. At least 32 people were killed in a train collision in 2021 in Tahta, a city in southern Egypt. Later that year, a train derailed in Qalyubia, killing 11.

Death toll in Turkey earthquake rises above 45000: UN

Ankara: The latest statement of AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) said that 45,089 people lost their lives while 1,15,000 people were injured in the Turkey earthquake, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.
A devastating earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Southern Turkiye in the early hours of 6 February (4.17 a.m.), with its epicentre in the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province. The earthquake affected the neighbouring provinces of Adiyaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Elazig and Adana where about 14 million people reside including about 1,8 million Syrian refugees.
A second major earthquake hit the region after 9 hours with 7.5 magnitudes causing further severe damage and destruction of damaged buildings.
Aftershocks continue after the Kahramanmaras earthquakes. On 20 February, a 6.4 earthquake in Hatay, the epicentre of which was in Defne district, and a 5.6 magnitude earthquake centred in Malatya on 27 February also caused the collapse of many damaged buildings and added to the death toll.

According to the ‘2023 Earthquakes Displacement’ report prepared by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a total of 2.7 million people left the disaster area.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has warned of the urgent need for a sustainable short- and long-term response to health, mental health and psychosocial needs in Turkey and Syria to prevent a “second disaster”.
The Minister of National Education of Turkiye announced that 202,817 students affected by the disaster were transferred to other cities.

UNICEF announced that 2.5 million children are in need of urgent humanitarian aid in the disaster zone.
The President of Turkiye announced that 2,14,000 buildings were destroyed and heavily damaged, to be demolished immediately.
UN OCHA mapped the sectors and locations of NGOs operational in the earthquake zone. The organizations that operate in the ten sectors can be accessed via the map.
The Turkish Government reported that a total of 911,942 people affected by the disaster were provided with psychosocial support at 4 mobile social service centres in the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye and Malatya.
It has been officially announced that the payment of 10,000 Turkish lire per household to the disaster-affected people was made to one million families.
STL continues its emergency response in the disaster area, namely in Hatay, Adiyaman, Kahramanmaras, Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa in the sectors of shelter/NFI, WASH, MHPSS and protection.

The MeT has forecast mainly clear weather at mainly clear to partly cloudy weather at most places in next 24 hours.
On February 26, he said, weather was likely to be generally cloudy with possibility of light rain and snow at scattered places. On February 27-28, he said, the weather was likely to be partly cloudy and on March 1-2, he said it is expected to be cloudy with possibility of light rain and snowfall at scattered places.
While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that followed it have ended, Kashmir is under grip of 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which ends on March 1.

Hyderabad to witness hottest February in 3 years as temperature rises

Hyderabad: The residents of Hyderabad who have already started feeling summer heat may witness the hottest February in the last three years as the temperature is set to cross 37 degrees on Sunday.
In the last three years, the highest maximum temperature recorded in February was 36 degrees Celsius in 2021.
In the current year, the temperature in Hyderabad crossed 35 degrees Celsius and almost reached 36 degrees Celsius thrice in February.
Temperature in Hyderabad rises
As per the report released by India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad yesterday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperatures in other districts are also more than the normal temperatures in February. While Hyderabad witnessed a 2.3 degree Celsius departure from normal temperature, the highest departure i.e., 3.2 degree Celsius was recorded by Hakimpet.
In the entire temperature, the highest maximum temperature i.e., 37 degree Celsius was recorded by Adilabad, Badrachalam, and Mahabubnagar.
Hyderabad to witness harsher summer this year
As per weather predictions, Hyderabad is likely to witness a harsher summer season this year. The reason behind it could be the El Nino event.
El Nino event can not only increase the temperature in Hyderabad during the summer but also affected rainfall and crop output.

It is a climate pattern that results in the abnormal warming of surface water in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. This effect can cause the sea surface temperature to rise by as much as 4 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal. It has a profound impact on weather patterns all over the world.
El Nino is an important part of the climate system, and its effects can be felt for less than a year.

SRINAGAR: The mercury continued to show an upward trend with all places in Kashmir Valley barring Pahalgam recording above sub-zero level minimum temperature on Friday.
Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar recorded a low of 2.8°C against the previous night’s 1.3°C . Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.7°C for the summer capital.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 2.0°C on the previous night and it was 7.0°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 0.6°C against minus 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.8°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 12.9°C against 11.2°C on the previous night. It was 2.4°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 5.2°C (above normal by 3.9°C), Batote 5.8°C (above normal by 5.8°C), Katra 12.2°C (4.1°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 6.4°C (6.1°C above normal).
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 2.1°C and minus 6.6°C respectively, the official said.
The MeT department has predicted occasional cloudy but mainly dry weather till February 18 and possibility of light rain and snow in plains and light to moderate snow in middle and higher reaches during late night of 19th to 20th afternoon.
While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

Cyclone Gabrielle: fresh storm warnings for New Zealand’s worst-hit regions as death toll rises to five

At least five people have died and evacuations are continuing as fresh storm warnings are announced in regions of New Zealand already devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle and the prime minister warns of the likelihood of further fatalities.
As of 2.30pm on Thursday, 3,455 people had been registered by police as “uncontactable”, with some likely to be multiple reports for the same person.
“We believe the majority of those considered uncontactable simply cannot make contact with loved ones, so police are prioritising those who are in isolated areas,” said the prime minister, Chris Hipkins, warning that there were some people for whom the police held “grave concerns”.
After a visit to storm-hit Gisborne on Thursday, Hipkins described the damage as “extensive”, with basics like food and clean water still needed. He described the cyclone as an event on the scale of the Christchurch earthquake in 2011.
With the extent of damage still unfolding, New Zealand requested Australia’s help for disaster response on Thursday morning.
“I can confirm that NEMA [National Emergency Management Agency] has accepted an agency-to-agency offer for emergency response support and expertise,” Hipkins said.

Speaking earlier in the day, the prime minister said New Zealand would be forced to re-evaluate and remake its infrastructure in response to extreme weather events. “There’s no question that as a country we need to look at the resilience of our infrastructure, and we need to do that with a much greater sense of urgency than we’ve ever seen before.”
As the emergency response continued, fresh storms were arriving, with severe thunderstorm alerts issued on Thursday morning for the worst-hit areas.

National forecaster MetService issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Thursday afternoon for areas including the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and the Hawke’s Bay region – three of the areas that have experienced some of the highest levels of flooding, damage and loss of life.
MetService said there were “very unstable conditions” including “heavy rain and hail”.
“Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas,” they said.
Fresh evacuation orders were issued on Thursday morning for residents of central Hawke’s Bay, with those around Drumpeel Road told to “leave immediately”.

Communication to the worst-affected areas remained difficult, with authorities relying on the Starlink satellite communications service from Elon Musk’s Space X to provide internet in some areas.
As of Thursday afternoon, about 102,000 households were still without power across the North Island, down from about 225,000 on Tuesday morning.
As flood waters recede, they are revealing huge destruction: homes partly immersed in silt and mud, or shifted off their foundations. “It’s just unbelievable the devastation,” Eastern police district commander Supt Jeanette Park said on Thursday morning. “When you see it, it’s hard to comprehend.”

On Thursday morning, Urban Search and Rescue said they were still rescuing people from their homes in Hawke’s Bay. In a radio interview, Napier-based Urban Search and Rescue specialist Ken Cooper said people had been climbing down from roofs to shelter in the upper parts of their properties.
“We’re finding people have moved to the roof voids of their properties, so we are still, at this moment, we are still rescuing people from their properties and there are a large number of people unaccounted for,” he said.
