‘We felt scared, but college campus was safe’: BTech students on return from Manipur

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Haryana native Sewak Ram, pursuing BTech at a leading engineering college in Imphal, heaved a sigh of relief after landing in Delhi from violence-hit Manipur on Tuesday.

“We felt scared, but the campus of our college made us feel safe. We had food and water. But, being confined inside the campus for about five days reminded us about the Covid-induced lockdown,” Ram said.

He hugged his college mate at the airport here before they parted on the way to their homes.

    MS Education Academy

Ram and a few other students from Haryana, all pursuing BTech degree at Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur, reached the national capital on Tuesday evening after being evacuated from the northeastern state which has been rocked by ethnic violence since May 3.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had on Monday said that 60 people were killed, 231 injured and 1,700 houses including religious places burnt in the violence that sparked concerns among family members of students from various states studying in that state.

Some of the evacuees, all in their early 20s, PTI spoke to at the Delhi airport said the Harayana government “made arrangements for their safe return” after students and parents reached out to it, in the wake of the violence.

“Situation is difficult in villages and inner areas, but Imphal city is safer. Police provided us everything,” Ram told PTI.

He said many students of IIIT-Manipur hailing from other states have also been evacuated by their respective state governments.

More than 140 students from Bihar were on Tuesday brought back from Manipur. Scenes of rejoicing were witnessed at Patna airport as they returned safely to their home state.

According to an official, a special flight commissioned by the Nitish Kumar government carried 142 students from Bihar, besides another 21 from the neighbouring state of Jharkhand.

In Delhi, while some evacuees made their way to their homes in Haryana by themselves, harried parents of some had come to the airport to take them home, after waiting anxiously for the flight from Imphal to land.

Panipat native Lakshya, a first-year student of BTech, went home accompanied by his parents.

“He has not eaten anything since morning. But I am just happy that my child is back,” Lakshya’s mother said, as they wheeled their way out of the airport.

Lakshya said in the last several days situation was “not good” and “I am glad we are out of that situation”.

Arvind Pathak of Gurugram was also among the evacuees who reached Delhi along with his fellow students of the engineering college.

“Earlier, situation in Manipur was quite bad, now it is a bit better. We were all together in the campus, so we didn’t feel much fear. Our teachers also comforted us,” he said.

The situation across violence-hit Manipur is improving, with no fresh reports of any untoward incident, while curfew has been relaxed in all the 11 districts where it was clamped, officials said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said more than 300 students from the state, who were stranded in violence-hit Manipur, were brought back in the last few days.

Sangma also said his government had on Monday arranged for a special flight on the Imphal-Shillong route to evacuate students stuck in the trouble-torn state.

Violent clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the 10 hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The clashes took place between the tribals living in the Manipur hills and the majority Meitei community residing in the Imphal Valley. Over 23,000 people have been rescued and sheltered in military garrisons and relief camps.

Israel min cuts India visit short, to return after meeting PM

New Delhi: Within hours of his arrival in New Delhi for a three-day visit, Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen has cut short his visit to return home owing to certain security-related developments in that country.

Official sources said that Cohen is expected to return later on Tuesday after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Cohen informed about his change of plans in a tweet.

    MS Education Academy

Cohen had arrived earlier on Tuesday for a three-day day visit. His visit was being seen as preparing the groundwork for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to India later this year.

“Foreign Minister Eli Cohen landed a short while ago in New Delhi, the capital of India, and as soon as he landed he received a security update,” the Israeli foreign ministry said in a statement.

“In light of the events in Israel, Foreign Minister Cohen decided to cut short his diplomatic visit to India and return to Israel after the meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that will take place today,” it said further.

According to reports from Tel Aviv, Israel has launched a major military offensive targetting some militants in Gaza Strip.

  • Republican voters return to the polls for the first time since their 2022 disappointment

Republican voters return to the polls for the first time since their 2022 disappointment

    [ad_1]

It’s been a long time since Kentucky was a competitive state in national politics: Bill Clinton carried it twice in the 1990s, but Republicans have won it by double-digits in every election since 2000, including then-President Donald Trump’s 26-point win in 2020. But Gov. Andy Beshear’s narrow victory in 2019 — and enduring popularity since taking office — means ticket-splitting may still be alive and well.

This month’s primary will only determine Beshear’s November opponent, not the fate of his governorship. But the primary marks key demographic and strategic drivers of politics in the state, foreshadowing the dynamics of the looming general election. Here are five key numbers to know:

    21 percent

Just like Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, the race started off with a clear favorite: State Attorney General Daniel Cameron broke strongest from the gate among the dozen candidates for the GOP nomination and has Trump’s endorsement. But Kelly Craft, who served separate stints as Trump’s former ambassador to Canada and the U.N., has been mounting a late charge.

Back in January, a Mason-Dixon Polling and Research survey found Cameron well ahead of Craft, 39 percent to 13 percent. There hasn’t been much public polling since, but an Emerson College/WDKY-TV poll last month had a much closer race, with 21 percent of voters still undecided.

Cameron’s allies dispute that the race has closed, circulating their own internal poll showing him still comfortably leading — but with 19 percent undecided.

Like horse races, primaries break late, since the voters and the candidates are mostly ideologically aligned. Cameron and Craft, the top two GOP hopefuls, will be angling for those voters still waiting to make up their minds.

    $7.2 million

If Craft can’t catch Cameron on the May. 16, it won’t be for a lack of financial resources.

Craft, the wife of billionaire coal magnate Joe Craft, has already spent or booked $5.8 million in TV advertising, according to data from AdImpact, an ad-tracking firm. She’s also been boosted by $1.4 million in ads from Commonwealth PAC, an outside group funded largely (though not entirely) by Joe Craft, though those ads aren’t on the air anymore. That means she’s spent at least $7.2 million on the primary alone.

Cameron, by contrast, has spent or booked only $564,000. He does have an outside group, Bluegrass Freedom Action, which has added $2.1 million to help him close the gap. The group is running ads touting Trump’s endorsement.

The spending advantage has been a double-edged sword for Craft. She’s come under attack from Cameron for relying on her family’s money in the primary, but she can also offer Republicans the prospect of a blank check to fund an expensive and grueling general election against Beshear.

    46 percent

Kentucky Republicans finally did it last year: They eclipsed Democrats in voter registration for the first time in history, a key milestone in the state’s rapid red shift.

Four years ago, Democrats still retained a significant registration advantage, 49 percent to 42 percent. That’s already reversed: Republicans outnumber Democrats in registration heading into this primary, according to the state Board of Elections, 46 percent to 44 percent.

The erasure of Democrats’ ancestral registration advantage has been rapid. Twenty-four years ago, when Republicans chose Peppy Martin for an ill-fated run against Democratic Gov. Paul Patton, Republicans accounted for only 32 percent of registered voters, outnumbered almost 2-to-1 by Democrats (61 percent). When Beshear’s father, former Gov. Steve Beshear was first elected in 2007, Democrats had a 20-point registration advantage, 57 percent to 37 percent.

This year, more voters can participate in the Republican primary for the first time.

    63 percent

Despite the state’s rightward shift, Beshear remains popular.

How popular? According to Morning Consult’s quarterly tracking, Beshear has the highest approval rating of any Democratic governor at 63 percent. He outpaces governors in solidly blue states like Massachusetts, Maryland, Hawaii, California and New York.

Beshear’s sky-high approval rating isn’t an artifact of Morning Consult’s methodology or long field period, either: The January Mason-Dixon poll gave him a similarly high, 61 percent positive job rating.

Republicans have started the process of trying to knock down Beshear’s popularity. An outside group affiliated with the Republican Governors Association began running culture war-tinged TV ads late last month hitting the Democrat for “allow[ing] sex changes for children as young as 8- or 9-years-old.”

    72 points

So exactly how does Beshear cobble together a winning coalition in a state that’s become so Republican?

It involves a lot of crossover Trump voters.

According to a POLITICO analysis of election results, Trump in 2020 outran then-Gov. Matt Bevin’s 2019 performance in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties. In one rural county, Beshear won it by 20, and the next year Biden lost it by 51. The result is an unheard-of 72-point gap between those two races.

In the bluer population centers, the differences were significant, but relatively modest: Beshear won Fayette County, home to Lexington, by 33 points in 2019, while President Joe Biden carried it by 21 points a year later. In Louisville, Beshear won by 35 points, but Biden won by 20.

The gap between the two races was greatest outside the cities — especially in Eastern Kentucky, where Democrats once dominated but now barely register in presidential races. Take tiny Elliott County, where Trump beat Biden by a three-to-one margin, 75 percent to 24 percent, in 2020. Beshear actually won it over Bevin — and it wasn’t particularly close: 59 percent to 39 percent.

The same phenomenon is evident in other surrounding, conservative counties. In Boyd County, home to Ashland — the largest city in Eastern Kentucky’s coal region — Beshear won by 6 points in 2019, but Trump carried it by a whopping 33 points a year later.

Whoever wins this month’s GOP primary will undoubtedly try to nationalize the race to depress Beshear’s appeal in these solidly red areas — though it’s worth noting that Bevin pursued the same strategy in 2019 and ended up losing.

Lebanon resumes registration service for Syrian refugees willing to return home

    [ad_1]

Beirut: Lebanon’s General Security Directorate has resumed its registration service for Syrian refugees willing to return to their homeland.

The directorate resumed the operation of a registration centre in Arsal, a town in northern Bekaa Region, after suspending its operations on October 6 of last year due to logistical reasons, Xinhua news agency reported.

Around 50 Syrian families who wish to return to their villages in Western Qalamoun mountains and Al Qusayr registered their names on Wednesday, it added.

    MS Education Academy

The Directorate said it would continue to provide the service at the centre three days a week.

Lebanese authorities have repeatedly called on the international community to assist the country in returning Syrian refugees to their homeland as it suffers from a dire financial crisis and can no longer host many displaced people on its territories.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Lebanon is currently facing its worst socioeconomic crisis in decades and hosts the highest number of refugees per capita and per square kilometre worldwide.

The government estimates 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 13,715 refugees of other nationalities.

Ninety per cent of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty, with the majority of them settled in the Bekaa region.

While prices are skyrocketing due to a severe economic crisis, almost half of the Lebanese and 2/3 of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees are food insecure.

Some 90 per cent of Syrians, 73 per cent of Palestinian refugees, and over 50 per cent of Lebanese households currently need assistance.

Lebanon has struggled to deal with emergencies like the Beirut port blast, Covid-19, and a cholera outbreak earlier this year.

Adani Power stock gives 29 pc return in 14 days as share price surges

    [ad_1]

Adani Group’s power business arm, Adani Power, continued its upward trend for the eighth trading session, with its share price rising by 2.78 percent to Rs. 242.50 today.

The share price surge has been an impressive 29.47 percent in just 14 days, as it has risen from Rs 187.30 on April 19. This impressive rise in the share price of Adani Power has helped the company recover 78.08 percent from its 52-week low of Rs 132.55, which was seen on February 28, 2023.

Buy, sell or hold Adani Power shares?

While the share price of Adani Power dipped earlier due to the Hindenburg report, it has now recovered significantly. However, technical analysts have mixed opinions about the further rise of Adani stocks.

    MS Education Academy

Some predict that the stock will rise to Rs 265-290 levels, while others suggest profit booking. Investors are advised to exercise caution and do their due diligence before investing in Adani stocks.

    Gautam Adani’s net worth surges

The surge in Adani Power’s share price has also resulted in an improvement in the net worth of Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group. Today, he emerged as the top winner on the world’s rich list, as his net worth surged by USD 520 million.

  • Alarms raised over exiled Biden adviser’s likely return

Alarms raised over exiled Biden adviser’s likely return

    [ad_1]

    biden staff 73903

“It’s hard to believe that in the post-#MeToo, anti-bullying world we live in, that the president’s team would be this tone-deaf,” said Michael LaRosa, the former press secretary for first lady Jill Biden.

“If true, it represents a stunning lack of judgment by those whom he entrusted to responsibly staff his reelection campaign. It’s not like there is a lack of Democratic talent in D.C. or across the country to choose from,” he said. “Hiring former personnel who embarrassed and humiliated him in his first three weeks in office and created an unnecessary distraction in the briefing room and for the first family feels counterintuitive to me.”

With the campaign still taking shape, official roles are highly coveted among Democratic operatives and veterans of Joe Bidens 2020 campaign. Only two full-time hires have been announced. And one of them, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the incoming campaign manager, doesn’t even leave her White House position for another two weeks.

Against that backdrop, Ducklo’s anticipated return has sparked debate and controversy among former Biden administration and campaign staffers — some of them vying for campaign jobs themselves — about what type of behavior is forgivable in a public role. It has also led to an outpouring of support from his former colleagues, underscoring the enduring bond among the original staffers who helped launch Biden’s 2020 campaign and their deep conviction about giving Ducklo a second chance.

“From the very start, TJ earned confidence and trust at every level of the campaign — because of his abilities and because he went the extra mile for his colleagues,” said Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn, speaking with West Wing Playbook in what she stressed was her personal capacity. “TJ made a mistake, took responsibility for it, and paid a price. He continues to be a valued friend in our community and an incredibly talented professional.”

More than a dozen of Ducklo’s former colleagues from the 2020 campaign and the White House reached out Tuesday to West Wing Playbook, arguing that he has made amends for his actions and deserves another stint in Biden world. The news coverage of his behavior was humiliating, they said. After enduring treatment for stage 4 lung cancer throughout the campaign, Ducklo was forced to step down from a dream job after Vanity Fair reported on his verbal altercation with a then-POLITICO reporter who planned to publish a story on his relationship at the time with an Axios reporter.

In the end, Ducklo took responsibility and apologized — a move that earned him goodwill among senior Biden officials.

“TJ is strategic, whip smart and loyal through and through — any campaign would be lucky to have him,” said Kate Bedingfield, who was deputy campaign manager in 2020 and left her position earlier this year as White House communications director. “I’ve known TJ well for a long time and I can say without hesitation that he learned from his past mistake, which is all any of us can do. He has experience and grit, and he’d be an exceptional asset to the president’s reelection team.”

As former deputy communications director for strategic planning Meghan Hays put it, in a refrain echoed by multiple former colleagues: “No one deserves to be defined by their worst day.”

Ducklo, whose possible reentrance into Biden world was first reported by Bloomberg, declined to speak to West Wing Playbook for this report. But for a White House often reluctant to go on the record, there was no such hesitation to defend him by name. Other staffers who worked with him on the campaign and in the Biden administration, including Kamau Marshall, Carla Frank, Andrew Bates, Megan Apper, Kate Berner and Robyn Patterson, offered similar messages of support in a personal capacity, as did others who asked to speak on background.

Ducklo’s resignation came less than a month after Biden, on his first day in office, told a group of presidential appointees he’d fire anyone who treated others with disrespect. Many who worked closely with Ducklo during the 2020 campaign described him as kind and empowering, a generous mentor to junior colleagues.

But other Democratic staffers said he could be difficult to work with and combative with some reporters. They pointed out that Ducklo has found a relatively soft landing already.

After leaving the White House, he worked for Risa Heller’s communication firm before moving back to his hometown of Nashville, Tenn., to be a senior adviser to Mayor John Cooper. He has stayed close to the Biden White House and helped organize Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Nashville last month after two legislators were expelled from the state House for protesting gun violence.

Among those eager to bring Ducklo back, his work in Nashville represents another reason why. He has sharpened his skills, some noted, especially when it comes to higher level strategic communications work, and helped organize a politically sensitive visit that, by all accounts, went off swimmingly.

But some former staffers from the Biden campaign and the White House said that such tactical benefits don’t change the fact that hiring Ducklo on the reelection campaign would be an unforced error — one that would inevitably distract from the president’s message during his campaign and invite otherwise avoidable scrutiny.

“I am all about forgiveness but there were also several loyal Biden campaign staffers fired by the White House for marijuana use. Do they get their White House or campaign jobs back, too?” LaRosa said. “Smoking pot is a lot less offensive than the type of workplace behavior we’re talking about here.”

Feinstein ‘hopeful’ she can return to Senate next week, Schumer notes say

    chuck schumer 59643

“It was in his notes, and he would have said if someone asked,” Schumer’s spokesperson told POLITICO.

Earlier on Tuesday Feinstein’s office told POLITICO that Feinstein “continues to make progress in her recovery” from shingles, but that her staff “don’t have a timeline yet for her return to Washington, which is dependent on her medical team saying it is safe to travel.”

A Feinstein spokesperson confirmed the senator and Schumer spoke, originally confirming the majority leader’s notes that the conversation occurred Monday and later saying that it happened Sunday night.

Senate Republicans blocked an attempt by Democrats last month to temporarily replace Feinstein on the Judiciary panel.

House Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) have called on Feinstein to resign before the end of her term to allow a replacement to be appointed.

The race to replace Feinstein is already crowded, with House Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee battling for the seat in deep-blue California. Complicating their races is Newsom’s 2021 commitment to appoint a Black woman for the Senate, should Feinstein resign.
