HC asks IAF to consider publication of book written by retired airman after deleting classified content

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court asked the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Directorate of Intelligence on Monday to consider whether a book written by a retired air force officer can be published after certain “classified” content is removed from it.

Hearing the retired airman’s plea for permission to publish the book, Justice Prathiba M Singh directed that a meeting between the petitioner and the officials concerned be held within a month and sought a report on it.

The respondent authorities said the clearance for the book’s publication cannot be given as its content is not conducive to the interests of the IAF.

It was said that in accordance with the IAF’s regulations, classified material cannot be discussed and the book contains certain information that has not been “declassified”.

The court was told that the objectionable content included information about certain “counter-intelligence operations”.

The petitioner said he was willing to amend or delete the objectionable portion.

“Let the petitioner be heard by officials of the Indian Air Force and the Directorate of Intelligence in order to explore the possibility of whether the book can be published after the content is amended or deleted,” the court ordered.

The petitioner, a former group captain, told the court that he decided to write the book on his experiences and according to a reply to a query filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, there are no guidelines in place in respect of a retired air force official writing fictional books.

The court also asked the authorities to file their response.

The matter would again be heard by the court on October 20.

Rijiju shares statement extending support to him over his remarks on retired judges

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Days after a group of lawyers criticised him for his remarks on retired judges, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday shared on Twitter a statement extending support to him.

Rijiju retweeted a tweet by Sanket Gupta, who identifies himself on Twitter as a Supreme Court advocate.

“We support statement made by honourable law minister @KirenRijiju sir. Please fill and circulate,” Gupta said, sharing the statement.

“We, the undersigned, are regular and active practitioners of the legal profession. We have read with a sense of alarm reports appearing in the media that a paltry number of lawyers had issued a statement condemning the remarks of…Rijiju to the effect that three-four retired activist judges had been making anti-India statements…,” read the statement.

Addressing a media event here on March 18, the minister had claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are part of the “anti-India gang” were trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

Last week, more than 300 lawyers, including 62 senior advocates practising in the Supreme Court, had issued a statement condemning the comments made by Rijiju.

  • 30 Years After Student’s Death in Fake Encounter, Court Hands Life Term to Retired Policeman – Kashmir News

30 Years After Student’s Death in Fake Encounter, Court Hands Life Term to Retired Policeman

Over three decades after the death of a 21-year-old man in a fake encounter here, a local court on Friday sentenced a retired sub inspector to life imprisonment. Additional Sessions Judge Pashupatinath Mishra on Wednesday held Yudhisther Singh, the then sub inspector, guilty of killing Mukesh Johri alias Lali, on July 23, 1992 in Bada Bazar area of the city.

The court awarded life imprisonment to Singh on Friday and also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on him, government counsel Ashutosh Dubey said.

It said the fine amount will be provided to relatives of the victim.

According to police, Singh, who was posted at Thana Kotwali, claimed to have killed Lali in an encounter in self-defence. The then SI had filed a case of robbery and murderous attack against the victim.

In a report submitted by Singh, he had alleged that while returning after buying household items from Bada Bazar on the fateful day, he saw three people having a dispute with a salesman of the Pink City Wine Shop and anticipating robbery, he challenged the accused and one of them opened fire on him, but he escaped narrowly.

The SI had said that if he had not fired, the miscreants would have killed him. He said he fired at one of them with his official revolver due to which he fell down bleeding.

Singh, however, was accused of killing Lali, a second-year BA student, by the victim’s family.

Chandra Johri, the mother of the deceased, had taken refuge in the Supreme Court to file a report against Singh and others, and later the investigation was handed over to the CB-CID. “In the inquiry, it was found that Singh was not on duty at the time of the incident and misused his official revolver. The then SI had said that Lali was shot from the front, but the post-mortem examination revealed that the bullet was found in the back,” Dubey said, adding that there was no encounter and Singh deliberately fired at the victim with the intention of killing him.

On November 20, 1997, an FIR for murder was registered against Singh on the complaint letter of Inspector Sheeshpal Singh of the CB-CID.
