Iran expels four Azerbaijani diplomats in ‘retaliatory’ response

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran has expelled four Azerbaijani diplomats from Iran after declaring them “persona non grata”, a media report said.

The move was a “retaliatory response” to the expulsion of four Iranian diplomats from Azerbaijan after having been declared “persona non grata” by Baku in April, Iran’s official news agency IRNA said in a report on Friday, without elaborating on the exact timing of the move and its other reasons, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to IRNA, the four Azerbaijani diplomats were working at Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northwestern city of Tabriz.

    MS Education Academy

In early April, Azerbaijan declared four diplomats of the Iranian embassy in Baku as “persona non grata” due to their activities that were “incompatible with diplomatic status”.

On April 6, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Iran’s ambassador Seyed Abbas Mousavi to inform him that the four should leave the country within 48 hours.

  • Baidu’s AI tool enhances Covid mRNA vaccine response by 128x

Baidu’s AI tool enhances Covid mRNA vaccine response by 128x

    [ad_1]

Beijing: A team of researchers from Chinese Internet giant Baidu has developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm that can rapidly design highly stable Covid-19 mRNA vaccine sequences that were previously unattainable.

The algorithm, named LinearDesign, represents a major leap in both stability and efficacy for vaccine sequences, achieving a 128-fold increase in the Covid-19 vaccine’s antibody response. LinearDesign takes a mere 11 minutes to generate the most stable mRNA sequence that encodes Spike protein

“This research can apply mRNA medicine encoding to a wider range of therapeutic proteins, such as monoclonal antibodies and anti-cancer drugs, promising broad applications and far-reaching impact,” said Dr He Zhang, Staff Software Engineer at Baidu Research.

    MS Education Academy

The study appeared in the scientific journal Nature.

LinearDesign borrows techniques from computational linguistics to design mRNA sequences with more-intricate shapes and structures than those used in current vaccines, Nature reported.

This enables the genetic material to persist for longer than usual. The more stable the mRNA that’s delivered to a person’s cells, the more antigens are produced by the protein-making machinery in that person’s body.

This, in turn, leads to a rise in protective antibodies, theoretically leaving immunised individuals better equipped to fend off infectious diseases, the report said.

mRNA, or Messenger RNA, has emerged as a revolutionary technology for vaccine development and potential treatments against cancer and other diseases. With numerous advantages in safety, efficacy, and production, mRNA has been swiftly adopted in the process of Covid-19 vaccine development.

However, the natural instability of mRNA results in insufficient protein expression that weakens a vaccine’s capacity to stimulate strong immune responses. This instability also poses challenges for storing and transporting mRNA vaccines, especially in developing countries where resources are often limited.

The sequences designed by LinearDesign exhibited significantly improved results compared to existing vaccine sequences. For Covid-19 mRNA vaccine sequences, the algorithm achieved up to a five-fold increase in stability (mRNA half-life), a three-fold increase in protein expression levels (within 48 hours), and an incredible 128-fold increase in antibody response.

“The vaccines designed through our method may offer better protection with the same dosage, and potentially provide equal protection with a smaller dose, leading to fewer side effects. This will greatly reduce the vaccine research and development costs for biopharmaceutical companies while improving the outcomes,” Dr Zhang added.

Russia promises ‘harsh’ response after Poland seizes Warsaw building

    ap130069951807

Moscow on Saturday said there would be a “harsh” reaction and consequences for Poland’s interests in Russia, after Polish authorities seized a building near Moscow’s embassy in Warsaw — a step Russia labeled “illegal.”

The building, used as a high school for the children of diplomats, belongs to the Warsaw city hall, Polish foreign ministry spokesman Łukasz Jasina told AFP, adding that authorities had acted on a bailiff’s order.

But Russia’s foreign ministry slammed the move as a “hostile” act in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and as an encroachment against Russian diplomatic property in Poland.

“Such an insolent step by Warsaw, which goes beyond the framework of civilized inter-state relations, will not remain without a harsh reaction and consequences for the Polish authorities and Polish interests in Russia,” the ministry added.

“Our opinion, which has been confirmed by the courts, is that this property belongs to the Polish state and was taken by Russia illegally,” the Polish foreign ministry’s Jasina told Reuters.

‘Congress lacks maturity’: Basavaraj Bommai’s response to ‘betrayal’ barb

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday slammed the Congress for saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has betrayed the people of the state on the issue of increasing the quota of reservations.

“The matter is in the Supreme Court and the statement made by Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala is an attempt to prejudice the court and thereby obstruct justice.

“The Constitution never contemplated reservation based on the basis of religion. The architect of the Constitution of India, B.R. Ambedkar, made this speech at the time of introduction of the 1st amendment,” Bommai said.

    MS Education Academy

The Chief Minister’s remarks came after Karnataka unit Congress president D.K. Shivakumar and party’s Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala in a press conference made charges against the BJP.

“Your statement as to why an undertaking was given before the court is hilarious and obviously shows your lack of maturity in understanding judicial proceedings,” Bommai said, responding to the Congress’ claims.

He said “the Congress is always busy practicing appeasement politics and has never understood to provide social justice”.

“In fact, the government is ably justifying its stand by engaging senior advocates. We are hopeful of securing justice from the Supreme Court,” he added.

The Congress in Karnataka earlier on Wednesday said that the ruling BJP government in the state had betrayed people on the issue related to the quota of reservations.

Shivakumar and Surjewala said that Lingayats and Vokkaligas would not get any extra quota of reservation as claimed by the BJP.

Addressing a press conference, Shivakumar said “the great betrayal of BJP has come to light yet again”.

“The Bommai government has failed to submit an affidavit defending the increase in the quota of reservations. The BJP has betrayed, insulted Lingayat, Vokkaliga, SC, ST and minority communities,” he said.

“The government has told the court that it will re-implement the reservations of 2002. Lingayats are going to continue in the 3B category and Vokkaligas will continue under the 3A category,” Shivakumar said.

Delhi HC seeks ED’s response on liquor bizman’s bail plea in excise policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s response on liquor businessman Sameer Mahendru’s plea seeking bail on medical grounds in the money-laundering case pertaining to the now-scrapped liquor excise policy.

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma asked the ED to submit a status report and a verification report regarding Mahendru’s health claims.

Mahendru must appear in court on May 1 while on interim bail that was already granted by a trial court on medical grounds. He has requested regular bail as well as an extension of the interim bail of at least 12 weeks, claiming that his surgery is scheduled for May 5 and that he needs to get post-surgery care.

    MS Education Academy

His lawyer claimed that the trial court later prolonged the businessman’s interim bail, which had been granted on February 28 and the accused is still in poor health and that he has placed on record the most recent medical documents.

On February 28, the court had granted interim bail to Mahendru on medical grounds for a period of 30 days after he claimed he was suffering from various ailments.

Later, on March 29, the trial court had extended Mahendru’s interim bail.

Earlier this month, the court had again extended the interim bail granted to Mahendru for a period of seven days while adjourning the matter due to the ongoing protest by advocates.

The ED had earlier alleged that Mahendru is the kingpin and the focal point around which the entire criminal conspiracy developed and he was essential to the cartel’s establishment and ensuring the repayment of the kickback amounts.

Mahendru has been chargesheeted by both the investigating agencies

Protection of Hill Fort Palace: Expert committee sought govt response in HC

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: An expert committee submitted its report to the Telangana High Court recommending immediate measures for the protection of Hill Fort Palace. A committee of experts was formed to review the position of Hill Fort Palace, known as the Ritz Hotel.

The committee said in its report that the building is unsafe and can be protected through immediate repair works. The committee was set up by the National Academy of Construction comprising professors from IIT Hyderabad and NIT Warangal. Heritage experts and an architect were also included in the committee.

In 1915, the Hill Fort Palace was constructed by Sir Nizamat Jung Bahadur, who served as the Chief Justice for the Princely State of Hyderabad, and he resided in it for 15 years. The building was designed with inspiration from the architecture model of Trinity College, Cambridge. Later, in 1929, the palace was purchased by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the VII Nizam of Hyderabad, for his son Moazzam Jah, who was also the head of the city improvement board at the time. Following the annexation of Hyderabad to the Indian Union, the palace was leased out to commercial interests who rebranded it as the Ritz and operated it as a luxury hotel.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice AjalBhuyan and Justice N Tukaram ji sought an explanation from the government on the protection of The Hill Fort Palace on a public interest litigation (PIL).

The government sanctioned Rs 50 crore but the restoration work of the building is yet to begin. The Telangana High Court expressed displeasure over the delay in commencement of construction works.

The tourism department had advised the National Academy of Construction to set up an expert committee. The committee recommended that the government should demolish the existing building and construct a new building. The Chief Justice has sought the government’s stand on the experts’ report. The Telangana government will explain its stand in the high court by June 27.

Appalling response to ‘genuine appeal’: Cong slams Jaishankar for accusing Siddaramaiah

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday slammed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for accusing former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of politicising the issue of Indians stranded in Sudan, saying it was an “appalling response” to a “genuine appeal” for assistance.

The Opposition party lashed out at the Modi government over the issue, saying the problem with most of ministers is that they are so eager to prove their loyalty to “their master and be his voice” that they have forgotten that they are sworn to certain responsibilities.

The issue began with Siddaramaiah posting a series of tweets saying “it is reported that 31 people from Karnataka belonging to Hakki Pikki tribe, are stranded in Sudan which is troubled by civil war” and the government is yet to initiate action to bring them back.

    MS Education Academy

The former Karnataka chief minister urged the prime minister’s office, the union home minister’s office and the ministry of external affairs to “immediately intervene” and ensure the safe return of the Indians.

Siddaramaiah also said the ‘Hakki Pikkis’ in Sudan are left stranded without food since the last few days.

He said the BJP government should immediately open diplomatic discussions and reach out to international agencies to ensure the well-being of Hakki Pikkis.

Jaishankar then came down hard on Siddaramaiah and tweeted, “Simply appalled at your tweet! There are lives at stake; don’t do politics.”

“Since the fighting started on April 14th, the Embassy of India in Khartoum has been continuously in touch with most Indian Nationals and PIOs in Sudan,” Jaishankar tweeted.

“Their details and locations cannot be made public for security reasons. Their movement is constrained by fierce fighting that is ongoing,” he added.

Jaishankar said plans regarding them have to take into account a “very complicated” security scenario and that the Indian embassy in Sudan is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs over the situation in that country.

“It is grossly irresponsible of you to politicise their situation. No electoral goal justifies endangering Indians abroad,” he said.

Assembly elections in Karnataka are due next month.

Hitting back at Jaishankar, Siddaramaiah said, “Since you are the External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar I have appealed you for help. If you are busy getting appalled please point us to the person who can help us bring our people back.”

Tagging Jaishankar’s tweet accusing Siddaramaiah of politicising the issue, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “A most appalling response from the External Affairs minister to a former CM with a genuine appeal. This level of nastiness from a man I have known so very well… who has developed new loyalties and who wants to show that in whatever he says and does.”

Ramesh added that he will not say anything on Jaishankar’s past.

Asked about the sharp Twitter exchange between Jaishankar and Siddaramaiah, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “I am very shocked at the reaction that came. Our leader Siddaramaiah gave him an apt reply when he said that “if he is done with appalling, he needs to start assisting citizens’.”

The problem with people in this government is that for every little thing they get so riled up, she said.

“He (Siddaramaiah) put out a message seeking the assistance of India’s foreign minister to safely ensure the passage of citizens from Karnataka struck in Sudan, what was so riling about it. The problem with most of these ministers, who are so eager to prove their loyalty to their master and be his voice, is that they have forgotten that they are sworn to certain responsibilities, they are sworn to accountability,” Shrinate said.

“This was nothing about politicising this was about seeking help. You (Jaishankar) may be helpless, you may be good for nothing and that is who you are. You have decided to turn a two-rupee troll, good for you, do all you want to do, ensure the safe passage of citizens back in India,” she said.

Tagging a tweet on the Siddaramaiah-Jaishankar Twitter exchange, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, “On this issue Dr S Jaishankar’s response surprises me. He knows that public representatives frequently convey to Govt appeals from constituents in distress. He has helped me with several during Covid. Why was Siddaramaiah ji’s request ‘appalling’?”

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last five days that has reportedly left around 100 people dead.

Meanwhile, government sources said on Wednesday said India is coordinating closely with various countries to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals in violence-hit Sudan.

Court seeks ED’s response to Satyendar Jain’s case transfer plea

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday sought the Enforcement Directorate (ED)’s response to an application moved by jailed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyender Jain seeking transfer of a money laundering case to another judge.

Principal District and Sessions Judge Vinay Kumar Gupta issued notice to the ED on Jain’s plea, returnable by May 4, the next date of hearing in the matter.

The court, however, refused to stay the proceedings before Special Judge Vikas Dhull, who is currently hearing the case, during the pendency of the application.

    MS Education Academy

Jain on Tuesday sought transfer of two cases related to alleged corruption and money laundering brought against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED to another judge.

Both the cases are currently being heard by Special Judge Dhull.

The proceedings in the CBI corruption case have been temporarily halted by the District Judge until May 4, when arguments on Jain’s transfer application will be heard.

Jain was placed under arrest on May 30, 2022, by the central agency under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The ED had initiated a money laundering investigation on the basis of the FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2017 under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the PC Act, 1988 against Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and Ajit Prasad Jain, Sunil Kumar Jain, Vaibhav Jain, and Ankush Jain.

The CBI has alleged that Jain, while holding the office as a Minister in the Delhi government during February 14, 2015 to May 31, 2017, had acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

A charge sheet was filed by the CBI on December 3, 2018, against Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and other accused.

Earlier, the ED had provisionally attached immovable properties worth Rs 4.81 crore belonging to companies beneficially owned and controlled by Jain on March 31, 2022.
