Doha: No breakthrough in sight as India joins UN to resolve Afghan issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India participated in a two-day closed-door conference on Afghanistan with 20 other countries led by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the Afghan crisis. The UN was spurred by the deteriorating situation in the landlocked nation to organise the meeting along with the US, Russia, China and other nations.

The UN said that the aim of the meet was to “reinvigorate international engagement around key issues, such as human rights, in particular women’s and girls’ rights, inclusive governance, countering terrorism and drug trafficking. The meeting is intended to achieve a common understanding within the international community on how to engage with the Taliban on these issues”.

The Doha meeting, however, came under criticism from both – the Taliban and also Afghan women for not inviting them both for the discussions.

    MS Education Academy

Suhail Shaheen, the spokesperson for the Taliban said that any meeting without the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) was discriminatory and unjustified as the Taliban government was the main party.

However, it emerged from Doha that Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who has been banned from travel, will be visiting Pakistani capital Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani and Chinese foreign ministry officials.

Women’s groups have held protests in Doha, for what they claimed were efforts by the UN to legitimise the Taliban regime despite the throttling of women’s rights in the country. The Taliban, contrary to assurances, after storming back to power in 2021 began steadily curtailing the rights of girls and women to education, stepping out of homes, visiting a doctor, marriage and divorce as well as working for UN agencies. The last one, which was imposed recently, galvanised women’s groups across the world against the Taliban rule.

Afghanistan’s Khaama news agency quoted Swiss ambassador to the UN, Pascale Baeriswyl, as saying that the situation in Afghanistan under the Taliban administration has turned into a complicated dilemma. “We do not have a magic solution to the Afghan crisis”, Baeriswyl said, adding that she is hopeful that the Doha meeting would lead to solutions to managing the Afghan crisis. Switzerland is currently the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The people of Afghanistan continue to face hardships due to the unending conflict, droughts and economic problems, though the Taliban has $7 billion worth of sophisticated US weaponry which the American troops left behind in 2021 after 20 years of the war against terror.

NCP wants Anurag Thakur, Irani to step in to resolve issues raised by wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sharad Pawar’s NCP said on Sunday that Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani should step in to address the concerns raised by top wrestlers protesting here against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

“(Youth Affairs And Sports Minister) Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani must intervene immediately and ask the Delhi Police, which works under the Union home ministry, to take immediate action. If they cannot do this for people who have won laurels for our country, then what can common citizens expect?” NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto asked.

India’s top wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, returned to the protest site Jantar Mantar on Sunday and demanded that the government make public the findings of an oversight panel that investigated sexual harassment allegations against Singh.

    MS Education Academy

The six-member oversight panel, headed by legendary boxer MS Mary Kom, had submitted its report in the first week of April but the government has not yet made it public.

“Why is Woman and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani avoiding this issue. Would she have not raised it if it had happened in Amethi or Wayanad,” the NCP spokesperson asked.

Crasto said it was sad to see the kind of treatment meted out to the country’s wrestlers.

“The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and their ministers bask in the glory of our sportspersons when they win laurels, but now the same are betraying them in their hour of need,” the NCP spokesperson said.

Assam, Arunachal sign agreement to resolve decades-old border disputes

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday signed an agreement to settle the long-pending disputes along their over 800 km border.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu signed the agreement in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

After signing the deal, Shah said that they all have witnessed a historic moment in the northeast to resolve the border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, pending for decades.

    MS Education Academy

He said that the report of the Local Commission on this dispute kept circling around for decades, but now been accepted by both the states and Thursday’s agreement would prove to be a milestone in the direction of realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a developed, peaceful and conflict-free northeast.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Union Home Secretary and senior officials from the Centre and both the states were also present on the occasion.

Shah said that since 2018, the Centre, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, has signed several accords including for Reang refugee settlement in Tripura, and several to end violence in the northeast.

He said that as a result of these peace agreements, so far more than 8,000 armed militants have shunned violence and joined the mainstream. Compared to 2014, there has been a 67 per cent reduction in incidents of violence, 60 per cent reduction in the number of deaths of security forces and 83 per cent reduction in the number of civilian deaths in the northeast, which is a big achievement of the government under the leadership of Prime Minister.

The Modi government has withdrawn AFSPA from many places in the northeast, he added.

Around 70 per cent police stations in Assam, 15 police stations in 6 districts in Manipur, all but 3 districts in Arunachal Pradesh, 7 districts in Nagaland, and entire Tripura and Meghalaya are now free from Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.

Shah said that due to the efforts of the Modi government, all-round development is visible in the entire northeast today and this entire region is on the path of progress.

Thursday’s agreement between the two states would end the dispute relating to 123 villages along the border, keeping in view the historical perspective, demographic profile, administrative convenience, proximity to the border, and the aspirations of the residents. Under the agreement, both the state governments have agreed that this agreement would be final with regards to these 123 disputed villages and neither state would make any new claim related to these areas or villages in future.

After the agreement, a detailed survey would be carried out by the Survey of India in presence of representatives of both state governments to determine their boundary.

  • Naveen, Mamata resolve to make federal structure ‘strong, permanent’

Naveen, Mamata resolve to make federal structure ‘strong, permanent’

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said they had resolved to make the federal structure of the country “strong and permanent”.

The statement came after a much-awaited meeting of the two chief ministers held at the conclusion of Banerjee’s three-day visit to Odisha.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting at Naveen Niwas — Patnaik’s residence — with Banerjee beside him, the Odisha CM said, “We resolved to make the federal structure of the country permanent and strong. There was no other political discussion.”

Banerjee seconded Patnaik and said, “I strongly support what Naveen ji said and I appreciate this. We also discussed about democratic rights and the safety of the nation.”

She also sought iron ore for industries in her state and proposed an industrial corridor between the two states.

However, speculation remained rife that the meeting was part of Banerjee’s plan to form an opposition front with regional players minus the Congress.

Earlier, both Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Uttar Pradesh’s backwards’ leader Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi party had last Friday said the two parties would stay away from both the Congress and BJP.

TMC had also announced it would hold talks with other regional parties in their bid to take on the BJP in the crucial 2024 elections though it officially continued to deny any plans for a ‘Third Front’, separate from the Congress-led broad coalition.

After Thursday’s meeting too, both the leaders skipped questions on the possibility of a third front or a regional alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“It was a courtesy meeting. There was no in-depth discussion about serious political matters. We share a very old friendship,” Patnaik said.

Banerjee thanked Patnaik for handing over two acres of land for the construction of a Bengal government guest house in Puri.

She also drew Patnaik’s attention to shortage of iron ore in Bengal and sought Odisha’s help which has the raw material for steel production in abundance.

Banerjee also proposed a Bengal-Odisha industrial corridor which will develop the economies of the two states that are connected by national highways and railway tracks.

The West Bengal CM said a Jagannath temple is being constructed in Digha coastal town.

“I have invited Naveen ji to Bengal. Our states share good relationship,” she said.

Earlier, Banerjee reached Patnaik’s residence, where the Odisha chief minister welcomed her by presenting Sri Angavastra of Lord Jagannath. He also presented a replica of the three chariots to the Trinamool Congress supremo, besides filigree work and some sweets from Odisha.

Banerjee gave a return gift of a shawl to Patnaik, and placed a jamdani saree in front of photographs of Patnaik’s parents former Odisha CM Biju Patnaik and his wife Gyan Patnaik.

Earlier, when Banerjee had reached Bhubaneswar on March 21, she had sent some sweets from West Bengal to Patnaik.

Resolve issues or Bandh on April 30: Telangana auto drivers warn govt

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Auto Drivers’ JAC convenor Mohammed Amanullah Khan on Thursday demanded that the state government solve auto drivers’ problems and difficulties, including an increase in auto fares before the inauguration of the new secretariat building fixed on April 30.

“Otherwise, the auto drivers in the Twin Cities would observe a one-day ‘Auto Bandh’ on the day and plan to gherao the building and prevent its inauguration,” they said.

Amanullah Khan announced that the auto drivers in the twin cities would gherao the state secretariat’s new building from 5 am on April 30 and will block all side roads and ultimately prevent the inauguration of the building.

He urged chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to ‘set his own house on order’ first before stepping into national politics. He wondered how the chief minister would go ahead and inaugurate the new secretariat building which was built with the money of poor people by ‘crushing’ them economically without settling the auto drivers’ pending demands.

The auto drivers pending demands are an increase in Auto meter charges on par with the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and every auto should be provided Rs 10,000 towards payment of annual insurance certificate charges and other expenses, a ban on bikes and Taxis like in Delhi, ban on registration of new electric autos and instead conversion of all existing autos into electric autos plying in GHMC area with the govt.

“The subsidy, new auto permits should be issued without restriction just like the new permits are issued to Ola, Uber and other cabs without restriction as this would stop black marketing of new autos business going on in twin cities non-stop automatically. Issue necessary guidelines to stop the private auto financiers ever-rising harassment and stoppage of corruption and harassment going on in the transport and police departments,” the JAC demanded.

  • Von der Leyen and Sunak present the agreement that aims to resolve the tension in the Irish Protocol

    [ad_1]

    Inigo Gurruchaga

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will meet this Monday with the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to fulfill the final stretch of an agreement on the application of the Irish Protocol, which has blocked relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union after Brexit and has caused the collapse of home rule in Northern Ireland.

Von der Leyemn will arrive at the Prime Minister’s residence, at 10 Downing Street, “at lunchtime” and both will leave for Windsor Castle to sign it and appear at a press conference. The agreement is likely to be signed in the presence of King Carlos III. Later, Sunak will present a statement in the House of Commons, which will be followed by a debate.

The Ireland and Northern Ireland Protocol is part of the Withdrawal Agreement of the United Kingdom from the Union signed by the two parties on January 24, 2020. It contains the legislative procedures that prevent the creation of a border between the two Irelands, making it possible that Northern Ireland remains in the common market at the same time as it remains in the British internal market.

The document lists the regulations and directives that must apply to goods that are produced in Northern Ireland or arriving in Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK, so that non-compliant goods do not enter the Republic of Ireland. community rules. It also establishes the supremacy of the Court of Justice of the EU to resolve disputes.

The then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, celebrated the signing of the Protocol and assured, despite the contrary opinion of other politicians and experts, that it would not lead to the establishment of customs controls. The reality is that border requirements have become a source of complaints about the cost of the bureaucratic burden, leading to the temporary non-application of some controls.

For the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which was the majority in the province until the May 2022 elections, the Protocol weakens its position in the United Kingdom. And the obligation to apply without voice or vote the modifications of regulations and directives decided by the EU, and the role of the community court, are in his opinion a loss of sovereignty and a democratic deficit.

    Seal

The DUP boycotts the autonomous institutions created in 1998 as an essential element of the peace agreement to protest the maintenance of the Protocol. The radical ‘brexiters’ deputies and Johnson himself demand that Sunak complete the processing of a bill from the former prime minister, which would give the British government the power to unilaterally annul the agreed obligations.

This context of British politics calls into question the viability of Sunak’s commitment, which seems determined to sign an agreement with Von der Leyen that does not modify the Protocol – Brussels’ persistent position – but would soften aspects of its application. The benefit would be the opening of negotiations on British participation in the Horizon scientific collaboration program, access to the financial market and other blocked issues.

The conservative leader, who took over as head of government in October – the third prime minister in four months – undertakes the biggest challenge of his tenure. Regarded as a meticulous and hard-working politician, he is portrayed by the Labor opposition as weak in the face of a scrambled parliamentary caucus and a party angry at him for his part in ousting Johnson.

He is now criticized for not having informed the unionists about the details of the negotiation until two weeks ago and for keeping secret the progress of his pacts with Brussels. He seems determined to “get Brexit done” and to challenge his critics. The polls say that Sunak, before sealing this inherited mess with his authority, is twenty points behind Labor in voting intentions.

  • UN chief asks for political track to resolve Israeli-Palestinian conflict

UN chief asks for political track to resolve Israeli-Palestinian conflict

    [ad_1]

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on regional and international players to help restore a political track to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Our ultimate goals remain unchanged: end the occupation, realise a two-state solution. But we must face today’s reality. The truth is that … time is working against us,” Guterres told the 2023 opening session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People on Wednesday.

“The longer we go without meaningful political negotiations, the further these goals slip from reach. Regional and international partners must collectively work — with greater urgency and determination — to help Palestinians and Israelis restore a credible political horizon,” he said.

The outlines of the solution are clear, and are laid out in UN resolutions, international law, and bilateral agreements, said Guterres, adding that what is needed is the political will and courage to make the difficult choices for peace, Xinhua news agency reported.

The current situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is at its most combustible in years. Deadly cycles of violence keep accelerating. Tensions are sky-high. And the peace process remains stalled. The situation in Jerusalem is becoming more fragile amid provocations and acts of violence in and around the holy sites. It radiates instability across the region and beyond, he warned.

The position of the UN is clear: The status of Jerusalem cannot be altered by unilateral actions. Jerusalem’s demographic and historical character must be preserved — and the status quo at the holy sites must be upheld, in line with the special role of Jordan, he said.

2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinians since the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs began systematically tracking fatalities in 2005. Two months into the new year, violence rages on without reprieve. Across the occupied West Bank and Gaza, hopelessness is spreading, feeding anger and despair, he added.

Each new settlement is another roadblock on the path to peace. All settlement activity is illegal under international law and must stop. At the same time, incitement to violence is a dead end. Nothing justifies terrorism. It must be rejected by all, said Guterres.

“Our immediate priority must be to prevent further escalation, reduce tensions and restore calm,” he added.
