Kanye West treasurer resigns, alleges possible ‘unlawful’ campaign transaction

In a separate letter addressed to Ye and obtained by POLITICO, Krason said he had been told he was going to be terminated by Yiannopoulos but was resigning before that was made official. He also said he had recently learned of a “potentially serious criminal transaction” involving the Kanye 2020 campaign, saying that Yiannopoulos “submitted falsified invoices and for expenditures that would be deemed unlawful” in November 2022, before Krason assumed the role as treasurer. He added that there was too much “personal animosity” for a professional relationship with Yiannopoulos.

Reached by phone, Krason said he felt he needed to leave Ye’s campaign following the personnel changes and due to concerns about Yiannopoulos outlined in his letter to Ye.

Yiannopoulos denied any wrongdoing by himself or the Kanye 2020 campaign to POLITICO, saying he was not going to “give any credence or ridiculous, ridiculous and easily disproven claims.” He suggested the allegations were a “venomous” attempt by the former treasurer to lash out while leaving the campaign. Ye could not be reached for comment directly.

The resignation letter cited an expense for a digital asset where Yiannopoulos allegedly sought reimbursement from both Kanye 2020 and the campaign of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia for whom Yiannopoulos had previously worked, though not recently.

The Kanye 2020 campaign previously reported paying $40,000 to Yiannopoulos in December 2022 for “campaign wrap up services” as well as nearly $10,000 a month prior for a “domain transfer,” according to FEC filings. But there are no direct payments to Yiannopoulos in Greene’s campaign filings from that time. A spokesperson for Greene did not immediately respond to a POLITICO inquiry.

Ye previously ran for president in 2020. Despite initial concerns he could play a spoiler role, he won less than 68,000 votes nationwide, according to Ballotpedia. Last November, he dined with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago shortly after Trump’s 2024 campaign launch.

  • Auditor named in Hindenburg report resigns from Adani company

Auditor named in Hindenburg report resigns from Adani company

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A small Ahmedabad-based chartered accountancy firm, whose appointment was questioned by a US short seller in its scathing report against the conglomerate run by billionaire Gautam Adani, has resigned due to “pre-occupation”, Adani Total Gas Ltd said.

Hindenburg Research in its January 24 report that levelled allegations of fraud, stock manipulation and money laundering against the Adani group, had also raised the issue of the size and capability of the firms auditing the conglomerate.

Adani group has repeatedly denied all allegations.

    MS Education Academy

Hindenburg stated that the independent auditor for the group’s flagship firm, Adani Enterprises, and its city gas retailer Adani Total Gas Ltd is a “tiny firm” called Shah Dhandharia.

“Shah Dhandharia seems to have no current website. Historical archives of its website show that it had only 4 partners and 11 employees. Records show it pays Rs 32,000 (USD 435 in 2021) in monthly office rent. The only other listed entity we found that it audits has a market capitalization of about Rs 640 million (USD 7.8 million),” it had stated.

In a stock exchange filing, Adani Total Gas Ltd said, “We wish to inform that M/s. Shah Dhandharia & Co. LLP, Chartered Accountants, have resigned as the statutory auditors of the company i.e., Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) with effect from May 2, 2023.”

It attached the May 2, 2023 resignation letter from the auditor.

In the letter, the auditor said it was given a second term of 5 years on July 26, 2022, and has completed the audit of the company for the financial year ended March 31, 2023.

“We have carefully evaluated and due to increased professional pre-occupation in other assignment, we regrettably propose our resignation,” it said.

“Our resignation does not result from an inability to obtain sufficient appropriate audit evidence,” it added.

It went on to state, “There are no other circumstances connected with our resignation which we consider should be brought to the notice of the Board.”

“In view of the above and as discussed and agreed with the management, we express our inability to continue as the statutory auditors for the company. Please accept our resignation with immediate effect,” it said.

It is not known if the chartered accountancy firm would also step down at Adani Enterprises. The board of directors of the group’s flagship, which houses businesses such as airports and data centres, is due to meet on May 4 to consider its financial results.

The Adani Group has been under siege since allegations of fraud, corruption, stock manipulation and money laundering were levelled by Hindenburg. The US short seller also charged the group with using a vast network of shell companies in opaque financial transactions.

The report led to at one stage wiping out almost USD 140 billion of the Adani group’s market capitalisation.

Adani group has denied all allegations.

Hindenburg had questioned the Adani group’s decision to give such a big audit mandate to a virtually unknown firm and claimed that the audit partner who signed off on ATGL audits was only 23 years old when he was first appointed.

It also claimed that the audit partner at Shah Dhandharia who signed off on the audits of Adani Enterprises was only 24 years old when he started. Both are now just 28 years old.

Shubham Rohatgi, who signed off the ATGL’s audit for the 2022-23 fiscal on May 2, 2023, on behalf of Shah Dhandharia & Co LLP was also red-flagged by proxy advisory firm Institutional Investor Advisory Services (IiAS) in July 2022.

Advising shareholders of four Adani group firms to vote against a number of resolutions including the reappointment of Gautam Adani as managing director of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), IiAS had stated that Rohatgi did not have “the requisite experience to audit” a top company.

“We raise concerns over the quality of the audit conducted since the signing partner of FY22 – Shubham Rohatgi – became an associate member of ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) in 2018. We believe he does not have the requisite experience to audit the financial statements of a NIFTY 100 company,” it had said.

While rebutting the Hindenburg charges, the Adani group had on January 29 stated that it followed a “stated policy of having the global Big Six or regional leaders as statutory auditors”.

The reference was to Arthur Andersen, Coopers & Lybrand, Deloitte and Touche, Ernst & Young, KPMG and Price Waterhouse. They have since telescoped into the Big 4 with the creation of PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1998 following a merger and the collapse of Arthur Andersen in 2002 after the Enron scandal.

  • Richard Sharp resigns as BBC chair after failing to declare link to Boris Johnson loan

Richard Sharp resigns as BBC chair after failing to declare link to Boris Johnson loan

    [ad_1]

Richard Sharp has resigned as BBC chair after he breached the rules on public appointments by failing to declare his connection to a secret £800,000 loan made to Boris Johnson.

Sharp quit on Friday morning after concluding his continued presence at the BBC “may well be a distraction from the corporation’s good work”.

An investigation by the UK commissioner of public appointments concluded Sharp had broken the rules by failing to declare his link to Johnson’s loan, creating a “potential perceived conflict of interest”.

The investigation also found that Johnson – when he was prime minister – had personally approved Sharp’s appointment as BBC chair, while the individuals running the supposedly independent recruitment process for the job had already been informed that Sharp was the only candidate whom the government would support.

Although this breach of the rules does not necessarily invalidate an appointment, Sharp said his position was no longer tenable and he had to quit. He intends to step down at a board meeting in June, at which point an acting chair will be appointed. Rishi Sunak’s government will then start recruitment process to find a full-time successor.

Earlier this year, the Sunday Times revealed that Sharp had secretly helped an acquaintance, Sam Blyth, who wanted to offer an £800,000 personal loan guarantee for Johnson. The prime minister’s personal finances were in poor shape while he was in Downing Street with his new wife, Carrie, and baby son, and was going through an expensive divorce.

Sharp decided to introduce Blyth to Simon Case, the head of the civil service, so they could discuss a potential loan. But the BBC chair insists he took no further role and there is no evidence “to say I played any part whatsoever in the facilitation, arrangement, or financing of a loan for the former prime minister”.

He added that he did not realise he had to declare the introduction during the recruitment process for the BBC job, saying: “I have always maintained the breach was inadvertent.”

It is still not known who ultimately provided Johnson with the loan, which became public only after he left office.

Sharp’s resignation comes at a tricky time for the BBC, which has been hit by criticisms it has become too close to the Conservative government – and faces questions over whether it has been too heavily influenced by ministers.

Labour’s Lucy Powell said the incident had “caused untold damage to the reputation of the BBC and seriously undermined its independence as a result of the Conservatives’ sleaze and cronyism”.

She added: “Rishi Sunak should urgently establish a truly independent and robust process to replace Sharp to help restore the esteem of the BBC after his government has tarnished it so much.”

The investigation into Sharp’s appointment was particularly damning on the way the application process for the job was handled. Other candidates were put off from putting forward their names for the BBC job by the perception it was already lined for Sharp. Government-friendly media outlets were briefed that Sharp was the government’s preferred candidate for the job before the application window had even closed.

“Leaks and briefing to the press of ‘preferred candidates’ for public appointments (referred to as ‘pre-briefing’) should be prohibited by ministers,” the report concluded. “In this case such pre-briefing may well have discouraged people from applying for this role. It can also undermine efforts made to increase diversity.”

MPs had already criticised Sharp, a financier and Tory donor, for “significant errors of judgment” in failing to declare the potential conflict of interest.

Sharp told MPs he had been attending a private dinner at Blyth’s house in September 2020 when the Canadian businessman said he had read reports that Johnson was in “some difficulties” and that he wanted to help. Sharp said he had warned Blyth about the ethical complexities of this.

At the time, Sharp was working in Downing Street on Covid projects, and told Johnson and Sunak of his aim to be BBC chair. He told the culture, media and sport committee in February: “I communicated to the prime minister and to the chancellor that I wished to apply and submitted my application in November.”

The government will now be able to select a new BBC chair on a four-year term, depriving a potential Labour government of making its own appointment until late 2027.

The part-time position involves overseeing the BBC’s operations and managing relationships with the government.

In his resignation statement, Sharp said that “for all its complexities, successes, and occasional failings, the BBC is an incredible, dynamic, and world-beating creative force, unmatched anywhere”.

BBC Chairman resigns after Boris Johnson loan row

    [ad_1]

London: BBC Chairman Richard Sharp resigned on Friday over a report into whether he failed to properly disclose his involvement in the facilitation of a loan to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Barrister Adam Heppinstall was appointed by the Commissioner of Public Appointments to investigate the claims which had first appeared in the Sunday Times, says the BBC.

Confirming his resignation, Sharp said the report, which was published on Friday, found “that while I did breach the governance code for public appointments, he states that a breach does not necessarily invalidate an appointment”.

    MS Education Academy

He said the report finds he did not play “any part whatsoever in the facilitation, arrangement, or financing of a loan for the former Prime Minister”.

But he said with hindsight he should have disclosed his role in setting up a meeting between Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and Sam Blyth — a businessman who was offering the then PM financial help — to the appointments panel during the scrutiny process ahead of him taking up the senior role.

Sharp said not doing so was an “oversight” and apologised for it.

In a statement, he said he did not want to be a “distraction”, adding that it had been an honour to chair the BBC.

He will remain in post until June until a successor is appointed.

In response to his resignation, the BBC board said: “We accept and understand Richard’s decision to stand down. We want to put on record our thanks to Richard, who has been a valued and respected colleague, and a very effective chairman of the BBC.

“The BBC board believes that Richard Sharp is a person of integrity.”

The board added that Sharp had a been a “real advocate for the BBC, its mission, and why the corporation is a priceless asset for the country, at home and abroad”.

Sharp, a former banker, was appointed as Chairman of the BBC on February 10, 2021. He previously worked at JP Morgan for eight years, and then for 23 years at Goldman Sachs.

    reporters threatened oklahoma 03402

In a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page on Tuesday, officials did not address the recorded discussion but claimed the recording was illegally obtained.

Also on Wednesday, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed it has launched an investigation into the matter at the request of the governor.

During the conversation that included Sheriff Kevin Clardy, sheriff’s Capt. Alicia Manning, Jennings and Jail Administrator Larry Hendrix, Clardy, Manning and Jennings appear to discuss Bruce Willingham — the longtime publisher of the Gazette-News — and his son Chris Willingham, a reporter.

Jennings tells Clardy and Manning “I know where two deep holes are dug if you ever need them,” and the sheriff responds, “I’ve got an excavator.”

Jennings also says he’s known “two or three hit men” in Louisiana, adding “they’re very quiet guys.”

In the recording, Jennings also appears to complain about not being able to hang Black people, saying: “They got more rights than we got.”

The Associated Press could not immediately verify the authenticity of the recording. None of the four returned telephone calls or emails from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Bruce Willingham told the AP the recording was made when he left a voice-activated recorder inside the room after a county commissioner’s meeting because he suspected the group was continuing to conduct county business after the meeting had ended, in violation of the state’s Open Meeting Act.

Willingham said he twice spoke with his attorneys to be sure he was doing nothing illegal.

Joey Senat, a journalism professor at Oklahoma State University, said under Oklahoma law, the recording would be legal if it were obtained in a place where the officials being recorded did not have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Bruce Willingham said he believes the local officials were upset about “stories we’ve run that cast the sheriff’s office in an unfavorable light,” including the death of Bobby Barrick — a Broken Bow, Oklahoma, man who died at a hospital in March 2022 after McCurtain County deputies shot him with a stun gun. The newspaper has filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office seeking body camera footage and other records connected to Barrick’s death.

Separately, Chris Willingham has filed a federal lawsuit against the sheriff’s office, Clardy, Manning and the Board of County Commissioners alleging Manning slandered him after he wrote an eight-part series of articles detailing problems inside the sheriff’s office. The lawsuit claims after the first few articles were published, Clardy and Manning began investigating which office employees were speaking to the newspaper and were attempting to get a search warrant for Willingham’s phone.

The lawsuit, which was filed on the same day the recording was made, alleges that after the series was published, Manning told a third party during a teleconference that Chris Willingham exchanged marijuana for sexually explicit images of children from a man who had been arrested on child sex abuse image charges.

“Manning made these (and other) false statements about Willingham in retaliation for articles he wrote about the (sheriff’s office) as a reporter for the McCurtain Gazette and to destroy his credibility as a reporter and journalist,” the lawsuit states.

More than 100 people gathered outside the McCurtain County Courthouse in Idabel earlier this week, with many of them calling for the sheriff and other county officials to resign.

On Tuesday, the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association, a voluntary membership organization and not a regulatory agency, held an emergency meeting of its board. It voted unanimously to suspend Clardy, Manning and Hendrix from the association.

Telangana Congress leader Maheshwar Reddy resigns

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a jolt to Congress in Telangana, AICC programmes implementation committee chairman Alleti Maheshwar Reddy on Thursday resigned from the party.

He is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Accompanied by state BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Maheshwar Reddy went to party’s Telangana in charge Tarun Chug’s residence in New Delhi on Thursday. He later called on BJP national president J. P. Nadda.

    MS Education Academy

Maheshwar Reddy told reporters that he had sent his resignation to the Congress leadership. He termed his meetings with BJP leaders a “courtesy” call.

He said he would announce his future course of action after April 26.

Reddy said he decided to quit Congress with a deep sense of hurt.

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) had issued a show cause notice to Maheshwar Reddy, asking him to explain his “anti-party activities” within an hour.

TPCC Disciplinary Action Committee chairman G Chinna Reddy stated that the panel received complaints regarding Maheshwar Reddy’s “anti-party activities”.

There were complaints that he was moving closer to the BJP and making scathing remarks about the Congress leadership.

Maheshwar Reddy expressed dismay at the treatment meted out to him, when no action was taken against an MP who met BJP leader Amit Shah. He alleged that “certain people” within the party were attempting to force him out.

Maheshwar Reddy had said that he practises politics with ethics. He also denied any interest in any other party and claimed that he had always discussed his grievances within the party forum. He said he also sought an appointment with AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the situation.

Targeting TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy, he asked whether a person who had defected from many parties and lacked credibility could issue him show cause notices.

UP: Tariq Mansoor resigns as AMU VC after being nominated as BJP MLC

    [ad_1]

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor resigned from the post on Tuesday, a day after he was nominated as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Gulrez will officiate as the Vice-Chancellor till Mansoor’s successor is appointed, a notification issued by AMU Registrar Mohammad Imran said.

According to the notification issued by Chandrashekhar, Special Secretary, on Monday night, Mansoor is among six people nominated by the Governor as MLCs against eight vacancies.

    MS Education Academy

Asked about his new role, Mansoor told PTI, “It is a very positive development and we will work for education and for the development of Uttar Pradesh and our country.”

“If the Governor has nominated me on the recommendation of the government, then I will work to the best of my abilities and make a contribution in the Legislative Council to various legislations and laws… especially those related to education and health,” he said.

In an open letter to university students and staff on Monday, Mansoor thanked the AMU community for standing by him during his six years at the helm, especially in facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As I demit office, this is the last time I address you as the Vice-Chancellor. I had the opportunity of serving the institution for six years during good and challenging times,” he said.

“Having studied, taught, served and led the university for so many memorable years, I am filled with emotions which will forever remain an integral part of me,” said Mansoor, who graduated in medicine from AMU and later joined Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College as a teacher.

“As the country enters the path of ‘New India’ and is poised to play a central role in world affairs, I am confident that AMU will continue to play a prominent role in the task of nation building,” he said.

The resignation of Mansoor, 66, who hails from Aligarh, came weeks before his tenure was to end.

He assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of AMU on May 17, 2017, for a period of five years. His term was to end in May 2022, but amid exceptional circumstances prevailing in the wake of the pandemic, the Centre extended his tenure by one year.

Once Mansoor takes oath as a member of the Legislative Council, he will become the BJP’s fourth Muslim MLC in the 100-member House.

The other three are Minister of State for Minority Welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj Danish Azad Ansari, UP State Haj Committee chairman Mohsin Raza and Bukkal Nawab.

At present, the BJP enjoys a brute strength of 74 members in the House, while the principal opposition Samajwadi Party has nine members.

Bahujan Samaj Party, Apna Dal (Sonelal), Nirbal Indian Shoshit Hamara Aam Dal, Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik), and Shikshak Dal (non-political) have one member each. The independent group and Independents have two members each. There are eight vacant seats.

Besides Mansoor, Ram temple construction committee chairman Nripendra Misra’s son Saket Misra, Ambedkar Mahasabha chairman Lalji Prasad Nirmal, former BJP Braj region unit head Rajnikant Maheshwari, BJP’s Varanasi district unit chief Hansraj Vishwakarma and Ramsurat Rajbhar were nominated to the Legislative Council by the governor.

SNB chair resigns after his Credit Suisse comments caused investor panic

    [ad_1]

London: The chair of the Saudi National Bank (SNB) has resigned for “personal reasons”, less than two weeks after his comments spurred investor panic over Credit Suisse that ended in an emergency takeover by its larger Swiss rival, UBS, according to a media report.

The Saudi National Bank (SNB), which was Credit Suisse’s largest shareholder, announced on Monday that it has “accepted” Ammar al-Khudairy’s resignation, and that he would be immediately replaced by its chief executive, The Guardian reported.

The bank gave little detail regarding the swift replacement, only saying that al-Khudairy was stepping down “due to personal reasons”, according to a statement released to the Saudi stock exchange.

Al-Khudairy’s exit came less than two weeks after he told journalists that SNB had ruled out providing any further funding for Credit Suisse because of additional regulations that would kick in if its stake in the Swiss lender then at 9.9 percent went above 10 percent, The Guardian reported.

Despite also assuring that the 166-year-old Swiss lender was “a very strong bank” and was unlikely to need more cash, the damage had been done.

Al-Khudairy’s comments spooked investors, who sent Credit Suisse shares plunging to record lows amid fears that SNB’s reluctance could limit emergency funding for the already-embattled lender, The Guardian reported.

The Swiss authorities were forced to step in, originally offering a 50 billion Swiss franc (45 billion pound) line of credit, and eventually orchestrating an emergency takeover of Credit Suisse by its larger domestic rival UBS that was confirmed only four days after al-Khudairy’s comments, The Guardian reported.

The swift action by Swiss regulators were part of efforts to curb further panic over the state of the global financial system, which started after US tech lender Silicon Valley Bank collapsed, and triggered government intervention earlier this month.
