NCP rejects Sharad Pawar’s resignation, urges him to stay on as President

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The NCP on Friday unanimously rejected the resignation of the party’s national President Sharad Pawar and requested him to continue in his post.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the special panel set up by Pawar to name his successor after his dramatic announcement on Tuesday to step down.

The panel’s decision on the two resolutions — rejecting the resignation and urging him to continue as party chief — will be conveyed to Pawar for his final call in the matter.

Top NCP leaders like Praful Patel and Ajit Pawar will make the official announcement on the developments later this afternoon.

Meanwhile, an emotional NCP activist attempted to commit suicide outside the party office but was prevented by thousands of other workers and the police.

Pune NCP workers, functionaries break down, urge Pawar to withdraw resignation

    [ad_1]

Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers and functionaries in Pune on Tuesday evening urged party president Sharad Pawar to immediately withdraw his resignation from the top post as they broke down on coming to know about his sudden announcement.

They said they will resign en masse if Pawar (82), whose hometown Baramati is located in Pune district in western Maharashtra, does not take back his resignation which was announced in Mumbai in the afternoon.

Pradeep Deshmukh, Pune NCP spokesperson, said after the news of Pawar’s resignation trickled in, hundreds of workers gathered at the party office in the city and could not stop their tears.

    MS Education Academy

He said the NCP is like a family, where Pawar is a father figure and such leaders do not retire.

“If Pawar saheb does not reverse his decision, party workers and office-bearers will remain firm on their resignation,” Deshmukh said.

Meanwhile, Vitthal Maniyar, an aide of Pawar, said the former Union minister’s move to step down as president of the party he founded in 1999 was not abrupt or sudden.

“Pawar saheb might have thought deeply before coming to this decision. He must be thinking of handing over the responsibility to the next team and making them ready while he is still active,” he said.

“Though Pawar saheb has sought time (to rethink his resignation), I am sure it was a well though out decision and he will convince party leaders to accept it,” Maniyar stated.

“Saheb has not given up politics or social work. Whether he is party chief or not, he will continue to work with the same gusto with which he was working till now,” he said.

Asked about Pawar’s possible successor if he stays firm on his decision to quit the top party post, Maniyar said the veteran politician believes in democratic functioning of the party and any decision on the issue will be taken unanimously.

Himachal Pradesh BJP chief submits resignation to Nadda

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Ahead of the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls, Himachal Pradesh BJP chief Suresh Kashyap has handed over his resignation to the party’s national president BJP Nadda, sources said on Friday.

According to BJP office bearers, Kashyap cited “personal reasons” for resigning from his post.

Kashyap, who was appointed as the chief of the BJP’s Himachal Pradesh unit on July 22, 2020, following the resignation of Rajeev Bindal, had a lacklustre tenure. The party suffered defeat in the bypolls to the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and in Arki, Fatehpur and Jubbal-Kotkhai Assembly constituencies in November 2021. It also lost the Assembly polls held in December 2022.

A two-time MLA from Pachhad, Kashyap was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019.

The BJP is likely to reorganise its organisational structure in the state soon.

  • Senate Dems wrestle with Feinstein resignation chatter

Senate Dems wrestle with Feinstein resignation chatter

    [ad_1]

    2023 0316 durbin francis 1

“The question is, how long until she goes back? So if it’s three months, I don’t know, that becomes a really difficult question. If it’s a couple of weeks? I’m fine with it,” said Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.). “I’m not going to pressure her one way or the other. But I think, you know, if it’s going to be months and months? My guess is that … she will be her own harshest critic.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) blocked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Tuesday afternoon request for unanimous consent to add Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) temporarily to the Judiciary Committee. In theory, that could tee up a floor vote on the matter, but Democrats don’t have the 10 GOP votes they’d need to move forward.

“This is about a handful of judges that you can’t get the votes for,” Graham said.

Indeed, Republicans made clear Monday that they would reject Feinstein’s request to temporarily step down from the Judiciary panel. Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has had to repeatedly delay committee votes on judges since Feinstein’s absence began in late February.

Now Democrats are largely out of options. And Schumer said little Tuesday, declining to get into any resignation talk whatsoever. Feinstein’s future did not come up at Democrats’ Tuesday lunch meeting, according to multiple senators.

“She and I are both very hopeful she will return very soon,” said Schumer, who spoke to Feinstein on Friday.

Unless Feinstein returns or resigns, all Democrats can do is wait. Feinstein’s term ends at the end of 2024, and her office on Tuesday pointed to last week’s statement in which she said she expects to come back.

It’s not the first time Democrats have wrestled with tough questions about the twilight of the 89-year-old Feinstein’s career. She faced pressure to step down as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee during the presidency of Donald Trump and eventually acceded to those demands. She also passed on the role of Senate pro tempore, which as the most senior senator of the majority party would put her in the line of presidential succession.

Now, Democrats expect her to make a difficult call about her own health as it threatens to overshadow her rich legacy in politics. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who is now the pro tempore and was elected the same year as Feinstein, said she has “complete confidence that [Feinstein] will make the right decision for her state and her country.”

“The next step is up to Sen. Feinstein. I hope that means she’ll be returning to us soon,” Durbin said. As to whether she should resign, Durbin added: “This is her decision. She’s had a remarkable career in the Senate. I’m not going to make that decision or even suggest it.”

Publicly, the White House lined up with other Democrats, saying Feinstein deserves a chance to recover and to make her own decisions on her career.

“This is a decision for her to make — when it comes to the future, her future,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Other Democrats noticeably bristled at the suggestion that Feinstein should be forced out, or that the party would talk about her resignation at all. At least three House Democrats have already stated that Feinstein should step down, though no senators have yet joined them.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) called the resignation talk among Democrats “very selfish.”

“Other people have different reasons and concerns that they couldn’t be here,” Manchin said, referring to a spate of health problems that have sidelined other senators recently. “We never asked them to step aside.”

House Democratic leadership is giving Feinstein similar room to maneuver, with No. 3 Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) saying Tuesday she should set her own timetable. However, he added that as the debt ceiling fight heats up in Congress, “our expectation as House Democrats is that every senator is going to need to participate.”

Yet with the special Senate responsibility of confirming nominees, the problem is already acute across the Capitol.

With Feinstein absent and Republicans refusing to help temporarily replace her, the Judiciary Committee is now tied, hamstringing some Democratic nominees. There are 15 judges who have gone through a hearing — which can be conducted without Feinstein — and are awaiting a panel vote, according to numbers tallied by the American Constitution Society.

Still, there are 18 judges who have already been through the committee and can be brought to a vote on the Senate floor, some of whom may be able to move without the California Democrat.

There are some questions about whether the GOP would even fill Feinstein’s slot on Judiciary if she did resign, given that restoring Democrats’ majority on the panel effectively allows them to unilaterally confirm nominees. Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) said that “whether she resigns or not, it isn’t gonna make any difference.”

But Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a Judiciary Committee member and counsel to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, said that Republicans may view a Senate vacancy differently than Feinstein’s request to seek a temporary replacement.

“Traditionally that’s when the resolution has been changed — when somebody is no longer able to serve,” Cornyn said. “There’s never been a precedent for a temporary replacement, it’s my understanding. So if the circumstances were to change, I assume that the precedent would be applied.”

Feinstein last voted in the Senate on Feb. 16, kicking off a period in which McConnell and Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) also missed significant time. McConnell and Fetterman have since returned, adding to the pressure on Feinstein. Of course, that already existed in part because her absence was the only one that meant Democrats couldn’t confirm certain judges, the most significant thing the party can unilaterally accomplish during a divided government.

Manchin implored Durbin to send judges to the floor that have bipartisan support, which would allow Schumer to move to confirm more nominees but would also isolate a handful of more controversial nominees. Durbin said he hasn’t made the decision to do that at the moment.

Telangana BJP demands resignation of Edu Min over SSC question paper leak

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday demanded the resignation of state education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy for the alleged question paper leak of Class 10 examination in Vikarabad.

Reacting strongly to the reports of the question paper leak of Telugu subject in Class 10 examinations, Sanjay, in a statement, charged the Telangana government of failing to conduct even Class 10 examinations in a fool-proof manner without giving scope for any leakage of question papers.

Holding the K Chandrasekhar Rao government responsible for the question paper leak, he said it was unfortunate that such leakage of question papers had become routine during the KCR regime.

    MS Education Academy

“It is shameful on the part of the KCR government to continue despite the fact that it cannot conduct even Class 10 examinations properly, which proved to be a curse for the students,” he said.

Sanjay also alleged that the state government was deliberately indulging in the leakage of question papers to benefit some corporate and private schools. “It has miserably failed to control the usage of technology for question paper leakage,” he said.

He said, “The students were already under tremendous stress on writing the examination covering the entire syllabus and the leakage of question papers would add to their stress further. Such thoughtless decisions will put the lives of students in jeopardy.”

Demanding that the government should discuss with the legal experts and do justice to the students on the question paper leakage, Sanjay asked the government to see that at least the remaining examinations were held in a fool-proof manner in a peaceful atmosphere.

“I request the students not to feel stressed out but write the examinations with a cool mind,” he added.

  • Campus harassment: Human chain, marches as students demand IPCW principal’s resignation

Campus harassment: Human chain, marches as students demand IPCW principal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Students and activists hit the streets and staged demonstrations at the DU’s North Campus on Friday as anger surged over the alleged harassment of students at Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW) during a fest and “inaction” of authorities.

The students held marches at Arts Faculty and inside the IPCW campus.

Inside the college, scores of students formed a human chain showing “dissent over the shameless procedure with which the college administration has been acting and working for the past few days,” according to the Left-affiliated AISA, which is at the forefront of the protest.

The students have demanded the resignation of principal Poonam Kumria.

Some unidentified men trespassed into the college, shouted slogans and harassed women during the ‘Shruti’ festival on Tuesday.

At the Arts Faculty, several students accused the police of brutality as they were detained and filled in the police van. A police official, however, said those protesting were peacefully detained and removed from the area.

Over 200 students marched from Miranda House to Arts Faculty demanding justice to the students of IP College for Women. The students organised the “Azadi March” against repeated incidents of harassment at the campus.

“The Delhi Police showed its ugliest form by beating students and pathetically harassing women and detaining all protesters from AISA’s Azadi March at DU Arts Faculty,” the AISA, which organised the march, said in a statement.

Another student organisation, the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), also participated in the march.

The students held placards that read, “Lock up these lumpens, not our hostel’, ‘Then Miranda Now IP’, ‘Where are women safe-Fight for women’s safety’ and ‘Strict action must be taken against the hooligans, police and DU authorities’.

As soon as the march reached the Arts Faculty, the police beat up students and filled them up in two separate buses, AISA alleged.

“The Delhi Police, under the orders from ACP Civil Lines, Satender Yadav, unleashed a gruesome attack on the students. AISA demands immediate termination of ACP Satender Yadav, who could not provide a safe campus to IPCW students and now has harassed students himself,” the group said in the statement.

Earlier in the day, the AISA led another protest inside IPCW.

Hundreds of students gheraoed the principal’s office and demanded justice, the group said.

Holding placards, the students of the all-woman college raised slogans against Kumria.

“Around 200 students have gathered here against the incident. We are demanding action against the goons, resignation of the principal and establishment of GSCASH (gender sensitisation committee against sexual harassment),” a protesting student said.

Later in the day, AISA shared photos of women students holding hands in the IPCW campus.

“Several brave students of the IPCW have formed a human chain showing dissent over the shameless procedure with which the college administration has been acting and working for the past few days,” the AISA said.

“Amidst heavy surveillance and barricades surrounding the college campus entraping students inside, a human chain has been formed in protest of the committee formed by the college administration which includes the principal herself to look into the mishandling and misbehaviour of the female students by drunk miscreants,” the group added.

Following the incident on Tuesday, police registered an FIR under IPC sections 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) and arrested seven people.

An AISA activist alleged the men who trespassed the college campus were heard chanting “Miranda, IP dono hamara (Miranda House and Indraprastha College both are ours)” and “Miranda nahi chhoda to IP bhi nahi chhodenge (We didn’t leave Miranda, we won’t leave IP either)”.

The police, on their part, said there was an excess crowd near the college gate during the fest.

Around 3 pm, some overzealous students started to enter the college in a hurry. In the process, there was heavy pressure on the gates and some students fell down, they said.

Congress MP mulls resignation over Rahul’s LS disqualification

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress’ Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, Manickam Tagore, on Sunday hinted towards resigning as a member of the Lower House of Parliament, saying he is in pain after “his leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified”.

“The Honourable Speaker disqualified my leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha. I had seen him off on Friday minutes before his disqualification. Rahul Gandhi, who gave me the opportunity to enter Lok Sabha in 2009, won’t be there. Why do I have to be there? I am pained for the injustice to him,” Tagore, who represents Tamil Nadu’s Virudhnagar constituency, wrote on Twitter.

Tagore is said to be a close aide of Rahul Gandhi. He is the party-in charge of Goa.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha after a court in Gujarat convicted him in a defamation case.

The Surat district court in Gujarat on Thursday convicted Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case against him over his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark in 2019.

The former Congress president was convicted under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500. The maximum possible punishment under this section is two years.

Bharatiya Janata Party legislator and former Gujarat Minister Purnesh Modi had filed the case against Rahul Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname…” remark.

  • 13 exam paper leaks in Gujarat in last 8 yrs, will Bandi ask for Modi’s resignation?: KTR

13 exam paper leaks in Gujarat in last 8 yrs, will Bandi ask for Modi’s resignation?: KTR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BRS working president and IT & Industries Minister KT Rama Rao has slammed BJP state chief Bandi Sanjay over the TSPSC paper leak issue, saying that the former made ‘unfounded accusations’ against the state government without knowing that TSPSC is a constitutional body and the state has a limited role to play.

“This demonstrates the level of his ignorance,” KTR remarked.

KTR delivered a press statement here on Friday warning that Sanjay would soon be prosecuted for his ‘political plots’. He admonished the BJP leaders to refrain from ‘politicking’ the situation for their own personal advantage.

The BRS working president stated that by attributing one person’s error to the entire TSPSC, the BJP was attempting to incite ‘unrest’ among the youth who were out of jobs. Rama Rao recalled that Bandi Sanjay had made an appeal to the youth to quit their employment and cease studying for exams in order to campaign for the BJP.

The minister added that the saffron party lacked ‘moral standing’ to cast doubt on the BRS government’s resolve to help the unemployed and that there had been countless instances of paper leaks in numerous BJP-ruled states.

“In Gujarat, the state of Narendra Modi, 13 exam papers have been stolen during the past eight years. Does Bandi Sanjay have the guts to ask for Modi’s resignation?” he asked.

“How the government responds to an issue when it emerges is essential,” Rama Rao remarked, recalling how, as soon as the paper leak issue surfaced, the state government acted quickly, formed an SIT, and detained all the offenders.

“Although the occurrence was regrettable, the TSPSC has decided to cancel the Group-1 preliminary examinations in order to uphold justice and consider the future of all qualified candidates,” he said.

He reassured Telangana’s youth and students were reassured that they didn’t need to be concerned about the recruitment process.

He added that the BRS government had already demonstrated its commitment to the unemployed youth by filling up vacant positions and that the state government would take all necessary steps to achieve justice for each and every unemployed youth in the state.

“The State government established a new zonal system, unique to the rest of the nation, with the aspirational goal of delivering 95% of the jobs for Telangana’s youth as evidence of its dedication to their welfare,” he said.

He stated that Bandi Sanjay has previously used a similar style of irrational personal accusation in relation to the Intermediate exams without possessing even a basic understanding of how the government functions.

Congress stages protest against AAP, seeks Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of Congress on Wednesday staged a protest outside the office of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, alleging they were also party to the now-scrapped excise policy.

Delhi Congress President Anil Kumar said that the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain prove that the Kejriwal government was neck-deep in corruption and scams.

The Congress alleged that under the Kejriwal government, Delhi has witnessed a Rs 10,000 crore liquor scam, Rs 4,288 crore DTC scam, premium bus service scam, class room construction scam, toilet complex construction scam, ration scam, oxygen scam during the Covid-19 pandemic, DJB scam and PWD scam.

Addressing the Congress workers, Kumar said that the resignations of his ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, which were quickly accepted by Kejriwal, were clear proof that Kejriwal was “the mastermind of the liquor scam and all other corrupt deals under the Delhi government”.

“Therefore, he should also resign as CM along with Kailash Gahlot, to enable a transparent probe into the liquor scam, to expose the entire corruption behind the liquor deal,” the Congress leader said.

The Congress alleged that Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot was involved in a Rs 4,288 crore DTC bus purchase and maintenance scam, about which Delhi Congress had submitted a 1,000-page complaint to the CVC (Chief Vigilance Officer) and CBI on July 13-14, 2021, seeking a probe, adding the CBI took cognisance of the Congress’ complaint to file a case.

He said that instead of removing Gahlot from the ministry, Kejriwal entrusted him with eight important departments, as “Gahlot was also a partner in Kejriwal’s various scams”.

  • BJP says CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, demands Kejriwal’s resignation

BJP says CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, demands Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party over its street protests against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest, asserting that the CBI is acting lawfully against the “corrupt” and demanding CM Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation for the arrest of two of his ministers in cases of alleged corruption.

The law is taking its own course and probe agencies are working lawfully, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4.

The “kattar beimaan party” (hardcore dishonest party) respects neither courts, nor laws or people, he claimed, accusing Kejriwal of orchestrating the anarchic protests against Sisodia’s arrest.

If the AAP believes that the CBI’s action is driven by political malice as it has alleged, then it should have gone to court as the probe in the suspected corruption in the framing of excise policy had been going on for months.

Neither does Kejriwal abide by law nor he sacks his ministers involved in corruption, he said, noting that Satyendar Jain is behind bars for months in a money laundering case.

Jain has not received bail yet because courts believe that the charges against him are serious, the BJP leader said.

Two of his six ministers are now behind bars in corruption case, he noted and said Kejriwal should take moral responsibility and tender his resignation immediately. After all the chief minister is the first among equals and leads the Cabinet, he said.

With its “drama” and show of “anarchy”, the AAP has signalled that it will not let probe agencies do their work which amounts to obstructing the process of justice and contempt of court, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4 in the case of alleged irregularities and corruption in excise policy, now withdrawn.

The BJP leader described the AAP as “Arajak Apradh Party” (anarchic, criminal party) and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seems to have taken oath on the Constitution to destroy it, he alleged, claiming that the “liquor scam” was perpetrated to fill his coffers.

A special CBI court on Monday remanded Sisodia in five-day custody of the central probe agency till March 4, a day after his arrest in the excise scam case.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers held protests in several states against the arrest in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped excise policy relating to the sale of alcohol.

Bhatia said Sisodia’s alleged silence before his interrogators in the CBI custody speaks loudly that a scam has been perpetrated. They (AAP leaders) are in panick because the law’s long arms have caught hold of their corruption, he claimed.
