Hyderabad: 25 children rescued, 10 traffickers detained by RPF

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Cracking down against human traffickers at railway stations, Secundrabad’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued 25 children who were being trafficked from West Bengal and Odisha and detained 10 traffickers.

The children who were in the age group of 12 to 17 years were meant to be employed in small-scale industries in the city.

As part of Operation Action Against Human Trafficking (AAHT), RPF-Secunderabad personnel in collaboration with an NGO, Bachpan Bachao Andolan rescued the children who were traveling by the East Coast Express.

    MS Education Academy

“The RPF escorted the train and conducted searches between Vijayawada and Warangal stations and rescued the children,” said Debashmita C. Banerjee, senior divisional security commissioner, Secunderabad.

Rescued children, who belonged to different states, have been provided shelter in a children’s home in Hanamkonda while the BBA team will follow up with the CWC and DCPU Warangal for further rehabilitation of the rescued children.

This operation is part of the drive by the BBA and the RPF to make the nation child trafficking free.

In May 2022, the BBA and the RPF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a common goal.

Both RPF and BBA pledged to work together to share information, build the capacity of RPF personnel and railway employees to work against human trafficking, increase sensitization and create awareness and also help each other in the identification and detection of such cases.

Considering how often the traffickers use the well-networked Indian Railways as the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable carrier to traffic thousands of vulnerable women and children every year, this drive has been fetching great results.

Talking about the dark world of child trafficking and child labor that continues to mar society and the various issues that crop up while dealing with child traffickers, the director of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Manish Sharma said, “In spite of having very strong laws to protect children from all kinds of exploitation and child labor, people continue to employ underage children in commercial activities and exploit them.”

“These are serious crimes and the Union government must enact the Anti-Trafficking Bill at the earliest to curb the problem,” he added.

  • Sporadic violence reported in Manipur; 13,000 rescued as more forces arrive

Sporadic violence reported in Manipur; 13,000 rescued as more forces arrive

    [ad_1]

Imphal: The Imphal Valley in Manipur which remained peaceful for most of Friday witnessed sporadic clashes later in the day as more security forces were rushed in from other states by road and air to calm down a state which had witnessed bloody ethnic rioting over the last 48 hours.

A Defence spokesperson said a total of 13,000 people were rescued and shifted to safe shelters, some in army camps as the army brought Churachandpur, Moreh, Kakching and Kangpokpi districts under its “firm control”.

Intermittent gunfights between militant groups and security forces were also reported in the morning hours from various hill districts surrounding the valley, but a wary peace seems to be reigning there since.

    MS Education Academy

“In the past 12 hours, Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish blockades. However, the situation was controlled by a firm and synergised response,” the Defence official said on Friday night.

Details of the incidents, however, were not available.

The exchanges of fire between militant groups, who have involved themselves in the ethnic clashes in the state, and security forces were reported at Kangvai in Churachandpur district, western hill range of Phougakchao in adjoining Bishnupur district and Dolaithabi and Pukhao in Imphal East district, a senior police officer said.

However, it was not immediately known whether there was any casualty on either side.

“Prompt response by Security Forces led to rescuing of civilians of all communities from various minority pockets of areas affected by violence. As a result, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Moreh and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday night,” the PRO said.

Nearly 10,000 soldiers from the Army and the Assam Rifles have been deployed in the state which was rocked by clashes since Wednesday between the Meitei community, which mainly live in Imphal Valley, and Naga and Kuki tribals who are inhabitants of the hill districts.

“Total of approximately 13,000 civilians have been rescued and are currently staying in various ad-hoc boarding facilities specifically created for the purpose within Company Operating Bases & Military Garrisons,” the defence official said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation in Manipur with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and top officials, even as the Centre dispatched additional security forces and anti-riot vehicles to maintain peace there.

Around 1,000 more central paramilitary personnel with anti-riot vehicles reached Manipur on Friday, sources said.

At least five Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank officers and seven senior superintendents of police (SSP) and SP rank officers of the CRPF have been tasked to coordinate the deployment of various security forces in violence-hit Manipur, official sources said in New Delhi.

Multiple sources said the fighting between communities had left several scores of people dead and nearly a hundred injured. However, the police were unwilling to confirm this.

Trains to Manipur have been cancelled with immediate effect on Friday due to the prevailing in the state, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson said.

The Defence PRO, in a statement, earlier said, “The Indian Air Force (IAF) undertook continuous sorties from two airfields in Assam employing C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft.”

“Induction commenced on the night of May 4 and additional columns commenced domination with effect from the wee hours of May 5. Domination & evacuation of civilians of all communities from affected areas continued throughout the night. Flag march in Churachandpur and other sensitive areas are underway,” it added.

Violence first erupted in Torbung area in Churachandpur district during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) on Wednesday to protest the demand of Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The march was organised by tribals — including Nagas and Kukis — after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Metei community.

During the march in Torbung, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, police said.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of the population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals, who include Nagas and Kukis, account for another 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts which surround the Valley.

Two shopping malls in New Checkon and Chingmeirong areas of Imphal city were vandalised and torched by an angry mob on Thursday evening.

People were not seen gathering in large numbers or venturing out of their houses in Imphal and other areas on Thursday night as patrolling was intensified on the streets, he said.

A tribal MLA, Vunzagin Valte, of Thanlon constituency was critically injured and was undergoing treatment at a hospital after he was assaulted by a mob on Thursday, the officer said.

The violence between the majority Meiteis and tribals over the demand of the former for ST status has displaced over 13,000 people from both communities.

People in various parts of the country protested against the violence in Manipur.

The Manipur government has given “shoot at sight” orders to contain the violence and Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said the violence was a result of “misunderstanding” in the society and that his administration was taking all measures to bring the situation under control.

Op Kaveri: 117 of 1,191 Indians rescued quarantined as they haven’t been vaccinated against yellow fever

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Under Operation Kaveri, 117 of 1,191 Indians rescued from strife-torn Sudan are currently being quarantined free of charge as they were not vaccinated against yellow fever, the Union health ministry said on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health is working in close collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs under Operation Kaveri.

The Government of India is evacuating about 3,000 passengers of Indian origin from Sudan. Necessary quarantine facilities are being arranged at transit junctures in mission mode for the incoming passengers, the ministry said.

    MS Education Academy

“A total of 1,191 passengers have arrived so far, of which 117 passengers are currently quarantined because they were not vaccinated against yellow fever. All passengers will be released after seven days if they remain asymptomatic,” it said.

These passengers are provided rent-free accommodation with free food facility in the quarantine centres managed by airport health officers (APHOs) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at various hospitals across states as well as central government hospitals like Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Arrangements have also been made at RHTC, Najafgarh (100 beds); NITR, Mehrauli (40 beds) and Lady Hardinge Medical College (60 beds), it said.

“The first batch of passengers arrived in Delhi with 360 passengers, none of whom required quarantine followed by the second flight which arrived in Mumbai with 240 passengers on April 26, of which 14 were quarantined,” the ministry said

Two people were released after validation of their vaccination certificates, it said.

The remaining 12 will complete their quarantine period till Saturday evening (as they were in transit for four days at Jeddah).

The third flight arrived in Bengaluru on Friday with 360 passengers, of which 47 passengers were initially quarantined. Three of them were released on Saturday after the verification of vaccination, the ministry stated.

The verification of five more passengers is in process.

The fourth flight arrived in Delhi Friday evening with 231 passengers of which 61 were quarantined (one was later released). Thirty-five passengers are at Delhi APHO and 26 passengers at Safdarjung Hospital, the ministry said.

“The fifth flight is expected to arrive in Delhi Saturday night with 367 passengers and an additional flight with 320 passengers is expected to arrive Sunday morning at 10:30 am in Bengaluru.

“The number of those quarantined will be dynamic as it is dependent on the verification status of passengers’ passport number(s),” the ministry added.

Operation Kaveri was launched on April 24 to evacuate the Indian citizens stranded in Sudan.

A team of officials, including from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian embassy in Sudan, have been appointed to ensure that the proper process of evacuation gets followed.

During the evacuation, Indians will be transferred from Sudan to the capital city of Khartoum where they will be flown back to India.

‘Like being on deathbed’: Rescued Indians share tales of ordeals in Sudan

    [ad_1]

Delhi: “It was like we were on a deathbed,” recalled a relieved Sukhvinder Singh from Haryana as he arrived at the Delhi airport from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night after being evacuated from strife-torn Sudan.

In his mid-40s, the engineer was among the first batch of 360 Indian nationals who returned home under India’s ‘Operation Kaveri’ evacuation mission.

Singh, a native of Faridabad in Haryana, recalled his ordeal in Sudan and said he was “still very scared”.

    MS Education Academy

“We were living in one area, confined to one room. It was like we were on a deathbed,” he told PTI before making his way home.

India has evacuated at least 670 Indian nationals from Sudan and is looking to rescue more of its citizens from the strife-torn African nation before the end of a tenuous ceasefire between the regular army and a paramilitary force.

Chhotu, a factory worker who hails from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, was in a state of disbelief and exclaimed, “‘Marke wapas aa gaya (have returned after almost dying)’.”

“Now, I will never return to Sudan. I will do anything in this country but won’t go back,” he told PTI shortly after landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took to Twitter to share images of the evacuees after their arrival at the Delhi airport.

“India welcomes back its own. Operation Kaveri brings 360 Indian nationals to the homeland as first flight reaches New Delhi,” he tweeted.

At the airport’s Terminal 3, as people deboarded the aircraft of Saudia — a Saudi Arabian airline — and slowly streamed on to the arrivals lounge area, smiles could be seen on the faces of many who went through tense moments over the past few days.

Many waved emphatically, displaying a visible sign of relief, while others shook hands on the skybridge as they were welcomed on their return.

Several were seen carrying their luggage, accompanied by children. They also obliged a few photographers with pictures upon their safe return.

Tasmer Singh (60), an evacuee who hails from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, described his experience during the ongoing strife as horrifying.

“We were like a dead body, roaming in a small house without power, water. We never imagined that we will face this kind of a situation in our lives but thank God, we are alive,” he said.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last 12 days that has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

India stepped up its efforts to evacuate the Indians from Sudan after a 72-hour truce was agreed between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces following intense negotiations.

The batch of Indian nationals evacuated from Sudan who landed in Delhi heaved a sigh of relief after returning to their homeland.

Among the evacuees who reached Delhi airport in the Saudia flight, 19 are from Kerala, state government officials said.

Under ‘Operation Kaveri’, India is taking the evacuees to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah from where they are returning home.

India has set up a transit facility in Jeddah and Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan is overseeing the evacuation mission from the Saudi Arabian city.

Sukhwinder Singh, the engineer, also narrated how difficult it was to travel during the strife in Sudan.

“We contacted the Indian embassy and buses for around 200 people were arranged. A road trip was very risky. Only God knows how we reached Port Sudan,” he said.

He said the warring groups can shoot anybody “depending on their mood”.

“It depends on the mood of the individual. If we say we are Indians, they let us go,” the Faridabad native said.

Meanwhile, IndiGo said it has offered services for charter flights to Jeddah under ‘Operation Kaveri’.

“We are still awaiting details from the ministry to launch these flights, nothing has been confirmed as of yet,” the airline said in a statement.

The Indian Air Force’s transport aircraft brought to Jeddah 392 Indians from Port Sudan on Wednesday, a day after an Indian Navy ship rescued 278 citizens from that country.

The total number of Indians evacuated so far from Sudan stands at 670, according to official data.

The first batch of 278 Indians was evacuated from Port Sudan by the Indian Navy’s frontline ship INS Sumedha on Tuesday.

Several states have opened help desks and announced assistance such as free travel and lodging for Indians evacuated from Sudan once they arrive in the country.

The Kerala government said it would make necessary arrangements to bring Malayalis evacuated from Sudan by the Centre to the state.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday opened a help desk at the resident commissioner’s office in Delhi for people from the state trapped in Sudan, a senior official said in Lucknow.

The Rajasthan government has decided to bear the transportation expense of all migrants from the state after they land in Delhi.

The government will also arrange for boarding and lodging for the returnees, officials said.

Indian mountaineer Baljeet Kaur rescued from Mt. Annapurna in Nepal

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: Baljeet Kaur, a 27-year-old prominent Indian woman climber was rescued on Tuesday, a day after she went missing near Camp IV of Mt Annapurna while descending from the summit point, an official of the expedition organiser said.

Kaur, who scaled the world’s 10th highest peak without using supplemental oxygen on Monday, was rescued from 7,363m after an aerial search team located her above Camp IV, Chairman at Pioneer Adventure Pasang Sherpa, was quoted as saying by the Himalayan Times newspaper.

“She has suffered from frostbite and is now being rushed to CIWEC Hospital from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu,” Sherpa said.

    MS Education Academy

Kaur was seen descending alone towards Camp IV by the aerial search team, according to Sherpa.

The leading Indian woman climber, who was left alone below the summit point, remained out of radio contact till this morning, the report added.

An aerial search mission was initiated on Tuesday morning only after she managed to send a radio signal asking for ‘immediate help’.

According to Sherpa, her GPS location has indicated an altitude of 7,375m (24,193ft). She climbed Mt Annapurna along with two Sherpa guides at around 5:15 pm on Monday. At least three helicopters were mobilised to trace her.

In May last year, Kaur, from Himachal Pradesh, scaled Mt Lhotse and became the first Indian climber to have climbed four 8000-meter peaks in a single season.

On Monday, Anurag Malu, a resident of Kishangarh in Rajasthan, went missing while descending from Camp III of Mt. Annapurna.

A team of five Sherpa climbers has been conducting a ground search for Malu, the report said.

According to Mingma Sherpa, chairman at Seven Summit Treks, Noel Hanna, the first person from Ireland to reach the summit of K2 during the winter season, died at Camp IV last night. Hanna’s body was also brought back to Kathmandu on Tuesday, the report said.

Indian climber Arjun Vajpai was also evacuated from Camp IV along with Pakistani climbers Shehroze Kashif and Naila Kiani after they fell ill while descending from the summit point, Seven Summit Treks’ Expedition Director, Chhang Dawa Sherpa, was quoted as saying in the report.

Annapurna is the tenth-highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,091 metres above sea level.

It is well known for the difficulty and danger involved in its ascent.
