Special flight to repatriate Musharraf’s mortal remains from Dubai gets delayed: Reports

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: The special flight from Dubai to repatriate the mortal remains of Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was delayed, media reports said on Monday.

Musharraf, the architect of the Kargil War in 1999, died on Sunday in Dubai after a prolonged illness.

The 79-year-old former military ruler, who had been in the UAE since 2016, was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at American Hospital Dubai.

Musharraf’s mortal remains were supposed to have been flown to Pakistan on a special flight at 11:30 am local time, according to Geo TV.

But the special flight has not arrived in Dubai so far.

“We were told the aircraft will leave Dubai on Monday morning with Pervez Musharraf’s body. We don’t even know the reason behind the delay,” Urdu news channel Aaj News reported.

The former Pakistan Army chief will be laid to rest at the Karachi Old Army graveyard and his funeral prayers will be offered at Gul Muhar Polo Ground in Malir Cantt on Tuesday after Zuhr prayers, according to The Express Tribune.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Pakistan’s missions in the United Arab Emirates are facilitating the transportation of Musharraf’s mortal remains, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The former military leader’s wife Sehba Musharraf, son Bilal and daughter Ayla will bring Musharraf’s mortal remains to Pakistan, according to Geo TV.

It said that Musharraf’s mother was buried in Dubai while his father was laid to rest in Karachi.

Musharraf seized power by ousting Sharif in a 1999 bloodless coup.

He served as Pakistan’s president from 2001 to 2008.

Musharraf, who was born in New Delhi in 1943 and fled to Pakistan in 1947, was the last military dictator to rule Pakistan.

  • Pfizer reports record revenue, expects Covid-19 vaccines to be commercialized later this year

Pfizer reports record revenue, expects Covid-19 vaccines to be commercialized later this year

    [ad_1]

In its 2022 fourth-quarter earnings call, company executives said that they expect sales of Covid-19 vaccines to decrease, in part because they still have shots that the government purchased last year to distribute.

The decline in revenue also comes in part because an estimated 24 percent of the population will receive a Covid-19 vaccine this year, down from 31 percent in 2022 as fewer people comply with federal recommendations.

“Fewer people are expected to receive their primary doses,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said. “And for the most part only those who are older or at higher risk are expected to continue receiving more than one booster per year.”

Pfizer expects to account for about two thirds of Covid vaccinations, and Bourla estimated about 102 million shots of its vaccine, called Comirnaty, would be distributed this year. The company is not expecting any new Covid variants that would prompt more people to get vaccinated.

The company also noted that the U.S. government had previously purchased a set number of Covid-19 vaccines; but moving forward, there will be less demand once the vaccine is sold on the commercial market.

Company executives did not mention how much they plan to charge for their Covid products on the commercial market but have previously stated it would be somewhere between $110 and $130 per dose. Moderna, which also makes an mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, has floated a price of $110 to $130 per dose.

On Monday, the White House announced that it would end the Covid-19 emergency declarations in May. And last week, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee discussed the steps it would need to take for a simplified Covid-19 vaccine regimen as it moves toward a model of managing the virus on a yearly basis, similar to the way flu shots are developed and administered.

Pfizer has its sights set on future iterations of Covid-19 vaccines, which it expects will be needed as immunity wanes as the virus continues to mutate.

“We expect to see an increase in Covid-19 vaccination rates assuming the successful development and approval of a Covid-flu combination product,” Bourla said, noting that about half of eligible adults receive a flu shot annually.

Other products in the pipeline: Pfizer also noted that it expects to launch its RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older this year. The FDA said Tuesday that it would convene its external vaccine advisory committee to discuss its application in late February.

The company is also developing an mRNA-based flu vaccine and an mRNA-based shingles vaccine.

Hungary reports strong tourism rebound in 2022

    [ad_1]

Budapest: Hungary’s tourism sector saw a strong recovery in 2022, with the number of overnight stays in the country’s commercial accommodations increasing by almost 40 percent year-on-year to nearly 40 million, the authorities said.

“The number of overnight stays was only 5 percent fewer than in 2019 before the (Covid-19) pandemic,” Zoltan Guller, Director of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, said on Monday.

Last year, revenues from commercial lodging increased by 52 percent year-on-year to 668 billion Hungarian forints ($1.86 billion), Guller added.

Overall, the capital city, Budapest, was the most popular tourist destination in Hungary, while the northeastern mountain regions of Matra and Bukk, as well as Lake Balaton, were the most frequently visited destinations among domestic travelers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Most foreign visitors to Hungary arrived from Germany, followed by the Czech Republic, Romania, the UK, and Poland.

Guller said that last year’s tourism figures were still lower than those of 2019 due to fewer visitors from the US, Russia, and China. (1 Hungarian forint = 0.0028 US dollar)

Kiren Rijiju calls SC resolution to reveal IB, RAW reports ‘grave concern’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said it was a “matter of grave concern” that certain portions of sensitive reports of the Intelligence Bureau and Research and Analysis Wing were put in public domain by the Supreme Court Collegium.

He said intelligence agency officials work in a secret manner for the nation, and they would “think twice” in future if their reports are made public.

He was responding to questions on some recent Supreme Court Collegium resolutions, which contained potions of IB and RAW reports on certain names recommended by the top court for appointment as high court judges, being made public last week.

The Collegium had reiterated the names to the government earlier this month while rejecting intelligence inputs.

“Putting the sensitive or secret reports of RAW and IB in public domain is a matter of grave concern on which I will react at an appropriate time,” Rijiju told reporters at a Law Ministry event here.

Vistara reports net profit, crosses $1bn revenue mark in FY23

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Vistara, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, has reported a net profit (excluding unrealized foreign currency loss and non-operating income) for the quarter that ended December 2022.

The airline crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year and reported break-even for the first time in the quarter.

Vistara on Monday said that it delivered remarkable results for the first time since its inception in 2013.

The airline achieved its highest-ever domestic market share of 10.4 percent in July 2022 and maintained its position as the second-largest domestic airline in India since then, flying more than 11 million passengers in the calendar year 2022.

Vistara also registered an 11 percent year-on-year growth in the member base for its frequent flyer program, Club Vistara.

Vistara grew its international network by over 180 percent in 2022, by adding seven additional routes including three new destinations (Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat).

  • India’s Population overtakes China’s as China mistakenly reports real Covid deaths

    [ad_1]

In a significant development, India has reportedly surpassed China as the world’s most populous country. According to projections from the World Population Review (WPR), India’s population was 141.7 crore as of the end of 2022. That’s a little more than 50 lakh more than the 141.2 crore declared by China on January 17.

India’s population momentarily surpassed China’s population as China mistakenly reported right number of Covid deaths in the country. However, China regained its position after rectifying the Covid death reports.

China called WPR report misleading and claimed there are a very few deaths in China due to Covid.

Speaking to The New York Times, Elon Musk said “I assure the world that increasing population isn’t a threat as I am already building houses in Mars and exploring lives in Uranus.
