  • Earthquake Of Magnitude 3.9 Reported In Jammu & Kashmir, No Reports Of Damage

    [ad_1]

JAMMU, Mar 5: An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The NCS in a tweet said that the 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck north of J&K capital Srinagar at 6:57 am. There were no immediate reports of damage from J&K.

The J&K earthquake was reported by the NCS shortly after two earthquakes were reported in Afghanistan-Tajikistan region. The NCS in another tweet shared that a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the region of Tajikistan bordering Afghanistan at 6:10 am.

The NCS said, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.3 occurred on 05-03-2023, 06:10:37 IST, Lat: 37.72 & Long: 73.48, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 267km ENE of Fayzabad.”

A second earthquake also struck Afghanistan just before the J&K earthquake, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS earthquake tracker shows a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan bordering Tajikistan at 6:56 am IST — just a minute before the J&K earthquake reported by NCS.

Late on Saturday night, another earthquake of magnitude 4.1 was struck the same region, according to NCS.

  • In Nord Stream bombings probe, German investigators see Ukraine link, reports say

In Nord Stream bombings probe, German investigators see Ukraine link, reports say

    [ad_1]

    gettyimages 1332337031 1

BERLIN — German prosecutors have found “traces” of evidence indicating that Ukrainians may have been involved in the explosions that blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2022, according to German media reports Tuesday.

Investigators identified a boat that was potentially used for transporting a crew of six people, diving equipment and explosives into the Baltic Sea in early September. Charges were then placed on the pipelines, according to a joint investigation by German public broadcasters ARD and SWR as well as the newspaper Die Zeit.

The German reports said that the yacht had been rented from a company based in Poland that is “apparently owned by two Ukrainians.”

However, no clear evidence has been established so far on who ordered the attack, the reports said.

In its first reaction, Ukraine’s government dismissed the reports.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied the Ukrainian government had any involvement in the pipeline attacks. “Although I enjoy collecting amusing conspiracy theories about the Ukrainian government, I have to say: Ukraine has nothing to do with the Baltic Sea mishap and has no information about ‘pro-Ukraine sabotage groups,’” Podolyak wrote in a tweet.

Three of the four pipes making up the Nord Stream 1 and 2 undersea gas pipelines from Russia to Germany were destroyed by explosions last September. Germany, Sweden and Denmark launched investigations into an incident that was quickly established to be a case of “sabotage.”

The German media reports — which come on top of a New York Times report Tuesday which said that “intelligence suggests that a pro-Ukrainian group” sabotaged the pipelines — stress that there’s no proof that Ukrainian authorities ordered the attack or were involved in it.

Any potential involvement by Kyiv in the attack would risk straining relations between Ukraine and Germany, which is one of the most important suppliers of civilian and military assistance to the country as it fights against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

According to the investigation by German public prosecutors that is cited by the German outlets, the team which placed the explosive charges on the pipelines was comprised of five men — a captain, two divers and two diving assistants — as well as one woman doctor, all of them of unknown nationality and operating with false passports. They left the German port of Rostock on September 6 on the rented boat, the report said.

It added that the yacht was later returned to the owner “in uncleaned condition” and that “on the table in the cabin, the investigators were able to detect traces of explosives.”

But the reports also said that investigators can’t exclude that the potential link to Ukraine was part of a “false flag” operation aiming to pin the blame on Kyiv for the attacks.

Contacted by POLITICO, a spokesperson for the German government referred to ongoing investigations by the German prosecutor general’s office, which declined to comment.

The government spokesperson also said: “a few days ago, Sweden, Denmark and Germany informed the United Nations Security Council that investigations were ongoing and that there was no result yet.”

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the reports of Ukrainian involvement in the Nord Stream bombings, saying in a post on the Telegram social media site that they were aimed at distracting attention from earlier, unsubstantiated, reports that the U.S. destroyed the pipelines.

Veronika Melkozerova in Kyiv contributed reporting.

  • JK reports 49 Internet Shutdowns In 2022: Access Now

JK reports 49 Internet Shutdowns In 2022: Access Now

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  Leading the world for the fifth consecutive year in internet blackouts, India has once again topped the list in 2022, New York based internet advocacy watchdog ‘Access Now’ said in a report on Tuesday.

This is the fifth consecutive year India has topped the global charts on this score and recorded highest number of internet shutdowns.

The watchdog’s report says that a total of 187 internet shutdowns were reported globally in 2022. Out of 84 such internet disruptions in India, 49 were reported in Jammu and Kashmir alone.

As per the report, the internet shutdowns in Jammu and Kashmir were imposed due to political instability and violence.

The report said India has accounted for 58 percent of all documented shutdowns globally since 2016.

In 2021, around 80 per cent of all internet shutdowns in India were imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, with JK being subjected to 85 such disruptions out of a total of 106 internet shutdowns reported in India.

The report said, “Indian authorities blocked at least 55,607 websites, URLs, mobile applications, social media posts and accounts between 2015 and 2022.  In 2021, 107 incidents of internet shutdown were recorded in India with orders to take down 6,096 social media posts, while 6,775 social media posts and accounts were ordered to be taken down last year.”

The war torn Ukraine stands second on the list and recorded 22 internet shutdowns after it entered into an armed conflict with Russia last year.

Pertinent to mention that Supreme Court, in 2020 declared internet access to be a fundamental right by extension, stating that the blackout could not last indefinitely and blackout orders must be published with specific reasons.

US reports 130,000 child Covid-19 cases in past 4 weeks

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles: Nearly 130,000 child Covid-19 cases were reported in the US in the past four weeks, according to the latest report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children’s Hospital Association.

As of February 16, more than 15.4 million children in the US were reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 since the onset of the pandemic, according to the report as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

Nearly 29,000 child Covid-19 cases were reported in the week ending February 16. Over the past five months, weekly reported child cases have plateaued at an average of about 33,000 cases, according to the report.

There is a need to collect more age-specific data to assess the severity of illness related to new variants as well as potential longer-term effects, said the report.

It is important to recognise there are immediate effects of the pandemic on children’s health, but importantly we need to identify and address the long-lasting impacts on the physical, mental, and social well-being of this generation of children and youth, said the AAP.

  • Special counsel seeks to force Trump lawyer to testify, reports say

Special counsel seeks to force Trump lawyer to testify, reports say

    trump classified documents 87171

It’s unclear what criminality Smith contends Corcoran’s testimony could expose, but previously unsealed court records show that prosecutors convinced a magistrate who issued a search warrant in August for Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate that there was evidence of obstruction of justice as well as potential offenses related to classified information.

The search found about 100 documents with classification markings that prosecutors contend should have been returned to the National Archives.

Corcoran did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment.

A Trump spokesperson referred to the special counsel’s investigation as a “targeted, politically motivated witch hunt,” adding: “The weaponized Department of Injustice has shown no regard for common decency and key rules that govern the legal system.”

Under court rules, Smith’s motion to compel Corcoran’s testimony would be heard by the chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Washington, Beryl Howell, an appointee of former President Barack Obama. Such proceedings are typically held in secret, although rulings sometimes become public.

Howell is set to turn over the chief judge’s post next month to a colleague, James Boasberg, also an Obama appointee.

Attorney General Merrick Garland named Smith as a special counsel in November, assigning him to take over the ongoing investigation into the sensitive documents at Trump’s home, as well as separate probes into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and issues related to fundraising associated with the election and its aftermath.

Turkey arrests 48 for looting earthquake victims: Reports

    [ad_1]

Ankara: At least 48 people were arrested in Turkey on suspicion of looting in eight provinces on Monday, Anadolu Agency reported.

One of them was arrested in the southern province of Hatay in possession of large sums of money, mobile phones, computers and weapons, in addition to jewelry and bank cards.

According to a decree published in the official gazette on Saturday prosecutors can detain individuals accused of looting for seven days instead of four, within the framework of the state of emergency declared by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the face of the disaster.

“We have declared a state of emergency,” Erdogan said during his visit to quake-hit Diyarbakir.

He added, “This means that as of now, those involved in acts of looting or kidnapping must know that the firm hand of the state will reach them.”

At dawn on Monday, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, followed by another with a magnitude of 7.6 and hundreds of violent aftershocks.

The earthquake in Turkey and Syria caused severe damage to thousands of buildings, including schools, health care facilities and other public infrastructure such as roads, airports, ports, oil stations, power lines, water supply and sanitation, and many aftershocks were recorded.

  • Minnesota Dem reports attack at her D.C. apartment building

Minnesota Dem reports attack at her D.C. apartment building

    [ad_1]

    election 2022 minnesota house 61849

She greeted the suspect and as she entered her elevator, the suspect entered along with her and started doing pushups before punching Craig in the chin and then grabbing her neck, the report said. She threw her hot coffee at the suspect to get away, the report continued, and escaped.

Officers searched the basement parking area of the apartment, which is in the H Street NE neighborhood less than a mile from the Capitol. Police announced the arrest of 26-year-old Kendrick Hamlin on suspicion of the assault later Thursday.

It quickly raised alarms among Craig’s colleagues, many of whom have remained on edge about the uptick in political violence in recent years. Other than members of House leadership and those who receive targeted threats, most lawmakers do not receive personal security.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a statement later Thursday: “We are very grateful that she is safe and recovering, but appalled that this terrifying assault took place.”

Jeffries said he’d asked the House Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police to work with Craig and her family to keep them safe both in Washington, D.C., and Minnesota.

The attack could revive calls to beef up spending on personal security for lawmakers — a concern that has flared after the attack on Paul Pelosi, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband, last October, and, more broadly, the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. Lawmakers have, generally, reported an uptick in public harassment in recent years.

Led by the sergeant at arms office, House officials increased security funding last year, creating a residential program that funds at-home cameras, motion sensors and locks for lawmakers at a cost of up to $10,000.

The Capitol Police, in a statement, said the assailant was “believed to be homeless.”

“At this time, there is no information that the Congresswoman was targeted because of her position, however the case is still under investigation by both the MPD and the USCP,” the department said.

The Hill’s police force said last fall that it needed more resources to provide “physical security” for members of Congress at their residences after the Pelosi attack highlighted shortcomings. The department also opened field offices in Florida and California in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to investigate threats to lawmakers.

Lawmakers have become increasingly concerned about their safety in recent years, with the Capitol Police citing 7,501 investigations into threats in 2022, including direct threats and “concerning statements.”

Following doctors’ advice, the Rebel star has cancelled all shootings for a while and he will be back to work once he feels better.
