Google to cut free snacks, workout classes for employees: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid layoffs over recession fears, tech giant Google is also creating several cost-cutting measures such as cutting down on free snacks and workout classes for its existing employees, the media reported.

In a memo, sent by Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, Google employees were notified that the perks will vary based on the office location needs, and trends seen in each office space, Business Insider reported.

The company’s micro kitchen that provides free snacks like cereal, espresso, and seltzer water will be closed on days that typically have a significantly lower volume.

    MS Education Academy

Some of the fitness class schedules will be shifted depending on how they’re being used.

The company would also discontinue spending on personal equipment like laptops, according to the memo.

It noted that funds will be utilised on work that is of a higher priority.

“Because equipment is a significant expense for a company of our size, we’ll be able to save meaningfully here,” Porat wrote in the memo, released by Business Insider.

She added that the company will reduce its hiring pace and reallocate teams to focus on higher-priority work.
Google also recently told employees that some workers would have to share desk space, amid plans to downsize some of its offices.

On January 20, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had confirmed in a letter to employees that about 12,000 people will be laid off globally, accounting for more than 6 per cent of the total workforce.

Last month, the tech giant informed its employees via an email that fewer of them will be promoted to more senior levels this year as compared to the past.

It reportedly also indicated to ex-employees who were laid off while on maternity or medical leave that they will not be paid for the remainder of their time off.

  • Nepal keen to sign 25-year electricity deal with India: Report

Nepal keen to sign 25-year electricity deal with India: Report

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: Nepal is keen to sign a 25-year agreement with India on selling its surplus power to the neighbouring country during Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s expected visit to New Delhi.

Though the official date of Prachanda’s visit to India is yet to be announced, the Kathmandu Post newspaper, quoting Nepali officials, reported on Sunday that the prime minister is likely to travel to New Delhi after the second week of April.

However, the two sides have yet to announce the dates, it said.

    MS Education Academy

“We are preparing a proposal for the Indian side on the 25-year agreement. But a lot also depends on whether the Indian side agrees to include our proposal in the agenda,” the report quoted a senior official at the energy ministry as saying.

Dinesh Ghimire, secretary at the ministry, said the issue of the long-term inter-governmental agreement was under discussion at the ministry but was yet to be forwarded to Nepal’s foreign ministry to make it an agenda item ahead of the prime minister’s trip.

He said such an agreement can be signed only if the Indian side gives its nod at the bureaucratic level before Prachanda reaches New Delhi, the report said.

Nepal proposed such a deal during the 10th secretary-level meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on Energy Cooperation in India in late February.

“During the meeting, it was decided that Nepal would make a proposal which India would examine,” said Prabal Adhikari, power trade director at the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), who was also in the Nepali delegation.

At the JSC meeting in Mount Abu, Rajasthan in February, Nepal and India inked an agreement to increase the power import and export capacity through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line from 600 megawatts to 800 megawatts.

An agreement to import and export 70 to 80 MW of electricity from Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 KV (kilovolt) power transmission was also signed between the two sides.

They agreed to set up the necessary mechanisms to export power from Nepal to Bihar during the rainy season through the existing 132 KV transmission line.

Currently, Nepal is allowed to sell 452.6 MW of electricity generated by 10 hydropower projects in the Indian power markets. The Himalayan nation awaits approval for more projects from Indian authorities to export electricity.

Adhikari said an inter-government agreement could also pave the way for selling power to India irrespective of whether a third country has invested or is involved in a particular project.

Currently, India has been refusing to buy electricity from projects that involve Chinese investors or contractors, the report said.

Nepal produces surplus energy during the wet (summer) season while it has to buy electricity from India during the dry (winter) season.

NEA Managing Director Kul Man Ghising believes the country will be self-sufficient in hydropower even during the dry season by 2026.

  • Trust in Police least among Muslims, Adivasis, Dalits & poor: Report

Trust in Police least among Muslims, Adivasis, Dalits & poor: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A survey has shown a “high-level” of public support for certain forms of government surveillance like through CCTV cameras even as the poor and groups such as Dalits and Muslims have the “least” trust in the police.

Surveyors from NGO Common Cause and the Lokniti programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies spoke to a total of 9,779 individuals in 12 states and Union Territories before they released the “Status of Policing in India Report 2023: Surveillance and the Question of Privacy” on Friday in the national capital.

“The study also involved focus group discussions with domain experts, in-depth interviews with serving police officials, and an analysis of media coverage of surveillance-related issues,” according to a statement.

    MS Education Academy

The findings of the survey, according to the statement, indicate a “high-level of public support for certain forms of government surveillance, but also a lack of public awareness regarding critical issues such as the Pegasus scandal and the Puttaswamy case.”

While Pegasus refers to the alleged usage of military grade spyware for surveillance, the judgment in the Puttaswamy case formally recognised right to privacy as a fundamental right.

The survey report states that the support for any form of surveillance is “directly proportional” to the respondent’s socio-economic status, i.e. the richer the respondent the more the support, the survey found.

The poor, Adivasis, Dalits, and Muslims trust the police the least, it found.

Some of the key findings of the survey state that “only one in four people strongly feel that CCTVs carry a risk of illegal mass surveillance.”

“Nearly three out of four people strongly believe that CCTVs help monitor and reduce crimes,” it said.

The survey found, according to the press statement, that about half of the respondents supported the collection of biometric details of suspects while Adivasis and Muslims were “most critical” of the police collecting biometric details of all suspects.

More than one out of two people strongly support the use of drones by the armed forces, government, and police. However, farmers and the poorest are most likely to oppose drone usage by government agencies, the survey found.

“One out of two people fully support the use of FRT (facial recognition technology) by the government, and police. People are four times more likely to strongly support the use of FRT by government agencies, compared to its use by private entities,” the survey found.

Nearly two out of three respondents believe that political parties surveil citizens for electoral gains, it said.

The survey also found that large sections of the respondents feel government surveillance by CCTVs (52 per cent), drones (30 per cent) and FRT (25 per cent), etc. to suppress protests and political movements are “justified” to a great extent.

However, it said, the respondents from Punjab are least likely to support government surveillance during protests, while those from Gujarat are most likely to support it.

Retired Uttar Pradesh Police and BSF Director General Prakash Singh said the authorisation for putting up surveillance tools should only be handled by the government.

“In India there are certain agencies that have been authorized to put people under surveillance, but the sanction must come from the Home Ministry. About one lakh sanctions for surveillance are given every year, which works out to about 250 per day. Can there be judicious application of mind with such a large number?”

“There is no liability provision, if it is found that a wrong person has been put under surveillance. Due application of mind is not happening today,” Singh, one of the most prominent faces who worked for police reforms in the country, said.

IPL 2023: CSK captain MS Dhoni may miss opening match against Gujarat Titans, here’s why – Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Chennai Super Kings captain attended the IPL captain’s meet in Ahmedabad on Thursday and seemed to be in good spirits.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings, is questionable for Friday’s first game of the Indian Premier League 2023 against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad owing to a soreness in his left knee, according to The Indian Express.

According to the source, Dhoni is experiencing pain and does not want to risk further injury because of the team’s current lack of wicketkeepers. When asked for comment, though, the franchise declined.

Meanwhile, Dhoni was present at the captain’s meet held at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier that day. Rohit Sharma, captain of the Mumbai Indians, was absent due to sickness.

Dhoni has been putting in a lot of work in Chepauk in preparation for the IPL. The 41-year-old still seemed to be in peak physical condition.

It would be intriguing to watch who takes charge of the team if Dhoni is unable to play on Friday. Ben Stokes should be considered for the captaincy. In seven games last year, Ravindra Jadeja was the captain.

At CSK’s training session on Thursday, Dhoni reportedly did not bat at nets but instead spoke with Gujarat Titans coach Gary Kirsten, with whom he won the ODI World Cup in 2011.

It has also been learned that the decision on whether or not to include Dhoni in the starting Eleven will be made on the morning of the game. Devon Conway might maintain wickets if he makes the starting eleven. Either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will wear the gloves if the New Zealand international is left off.

Dhoni’s left knee, it has been said, has been giving him trouble over the last few days. During CSK’s intra-squad encounter on Monday, Dhoni was reluctant to step out to bat and was spotted sitting with a knee cap.

As he attempted to go for a two, he would hobble and struggle to get there.

Two Adani group companies face ‘contagion risks’: Fitch report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Global ratings agency Fitch has said that two companies within the Adani Group – Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd. and Adani Transmission Ltd. – face increased “contagion risks” due to weak governance within the conglomerate.

The report, released on Tuesday in Singapore, suggests that until these concerns are addressed, the ratings for Adani Transmission and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone will remain capped at their current level of “BBB-/Stable”.

Fitch also noted that as of the end of December 2022, the debt of Adani’s rated Indian entities was largely secured and held offshore, with U.S. dollar bonds maturing from mid-2024. Therefore, there are no immediate concerns about repayment.

Adani debunks reports on repayment of loans against shares

Meanwhile, the Adani Group has strongly refuted news reports which make the baseless and deliberately mischievous claim that the Group has not completed the repayment of USD 2.15 billion in share-backed debt.

Adani has completed full prepayment of margin linked share backed financing aggregating to USD 2.15 billion and all corresponding shares pledged for those facilities have been released.

Adani said all share backed facilities availed by the promoters have been paid off.

After the statement, stocks of Adani Group companies rebounded.

JK’s Hydroelectric Project Progress Disappoints, Says CAG Report

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In what could raise questions on J&K Government’s capacity to harness water resources, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has revealed that only 10 micro/mini/small hydel power projects with the capacity of 79.75 MWs (five percent) have been commissioned in Jammu & Kashmir against 374 identified project sites with power generation capacity of 1,725.53 MWs.

According to the auditor’s findings on the progress of micro/mini/small hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, only 10 projects with a total capacity of 79.75 MWs (five percent) have been commissioned out of the 374 identified project sites capable of generating 1,725.53 MWs. The report further indicates that these projects faced time overruns ranging from four months to over seven years.

“While no action was taken for 225 sites (60 per cent) after their identification, bids were invited for 115 sites (31 per cent) only. No response was received for 70 sites and out of 45 sites awarded for development of hydro power projects, 32 IPPs either failed to fulfil commitments like obtaining statutory clearances for execution of projects or did not deposit upfront premium or the allotment of projects was terminated due to land issues, slow progress and techno economic viability reasons,” reads the report.

The audit also pointed out that Jammu & Kashmir couldn’t avail Rs 2000 crore proposed for the development of small hydroelectric projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Package announced in 2015.

“For 20 sites proposed under Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP), GoI had not acceded to the request of the Government of J&K for the release of funds. The project “Implementation of Small Hydro power projects” with provision Rs 2,000 crore was sanctioned (November 2015) under PMDP. The Board of Directors (BoD) of JKPDC in its 73rd meeting (October 2017) accorded approval for implementation of 20 projects through EPC mode to be funded under PMDP as well as funds to be arranged by Power Development Department subject to their viability vis-à-vis evacuation of power. The request of Government of J&K for release of funds under PMDP was not acceded by GoI in view of high project cost and unviable tariff of these 20 projects as a result the JKPDC could not avail assistance from GoI,” the report states.

  • SC directs Centre to file report on cases of alleged attacks on Christians

SC directs Centre to file report on cases of alleged attacks on Christians

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court directed the Centre on Wednesday to file a report on alleged attacks on Christian institutions and priests across the country as well as on the implementation of its earlier guidelines to curb hate crimes.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to collate a report on the state’s compliance with the court’s guidelines and file the same before it.

The court passed the directions after the petitioner’s counsel, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, said nodal officers have been notified in every district but they are not registering cases, even though hate speeches have been delivered during rallies in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and such news appear regularly on television and in newspapers.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati opposed the submission made by Gonsalves, saying it is “easy to make sweeping statements”.

The CJI then said, “Let the MHA file a reply…. We can keep this after two weeks.”

In 2018, the apex court issued a slew of guidelines for the Centre and states for dealing with hate crimes. These included fast-track trials, compensation to the victims, deterrent punishment and disciplinary action against lax law-enforcing officials. The court said offences such as hate crimes, cow vigilantism and lynching should be nipped in the bud.

The states shall designate a senior police officer not below the rank of superintendent of police as the nodal officer for the implementation of the guidelines in each district, the court had said, adding that these officers will set up a task force, to be assisted by a DSP-rank officer, for taking measures to prevent incidents of mob violence and lynching.

The state governments shall immediately identify the districts, sub-divisions and villages where instances of lynching and mob violence have been reported in the recent past, the court had said.

  • Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

Pakistan May Not Play Its 2023 ODI World Cup Games In India: Report. This Is The Likely Venue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi, Mar, 29: With the confusion over where Indian cricket team and Pakistan cricket team over where the two sides might play in the Asia Cup, ESPN Cricinfo has reported a fresh development on the World Cup front. The ODI ICC World Cup is being held in India in October-November. According to the report, Pakistan could play its matches in Bangladesh. “The idea has been discussed at the ICC level,” the report claimed. This reported development comes as a hybrid model is coming up as an option for host venue of the Asia Cup.

Also, Wasim Khan, former CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the current General Manager of Cricket for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in an interview with ARY News claimed that Pakistan might also play their World Cup matches at a neutral venue.

“I don’t know if it would take place in a different country but a neutral venue is highly likely,” said Wasim on a question regarding the likely neutral venue for India’s Asia Cup fixtures.

“I don’t think that Pakistan will play their matches in India. I think their matches will also be held at a neutral venue just like India’s Asia Cup matches,” Wasim added.

Pakistan were initially announced as the Asia Cup hosts. However, in October, 2022, the Pakistan Cricket Board was caught off guard by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who stated that India would not travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup and that it would be held in a “neutral” venue. The PCB, under the then chairman Ramiz Raja, promptly responded and said that any such development might impact their plans to travelling to India for the World Cup.

Since then a stalemate has been there regarding the Asia Cup. According to report by news agency ANI, the Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be held in Pakistan, but India will play their games at a neutral venue. After a brief stalemate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are working quickly to broker a compromise that could result in both teams playing their tournament matches against one another outside of Pakistan. India are likely to play their Asia Cup 2023 matches in either England, Oman, Sri Lanka or UAE.

“A meeting between the boards had been done a few days back and the tournament will be allowed to be held in Pakistan. India will play their matches at a neutral venue and will not travel to Pakistan, the venues where India could play their matches are likely to be Oman, UAE, England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Though the decision will be decided later,” a source told ANI.

The foreign location is still to be determined, although the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka, and possibly England are viable candidates to host India’s matches, including at least two matches between India and Pakistan. The neutral venue is not confirmed but the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka and even England are potential contenders. If India book their place in the Asia Cup final, the summit clash will take place at a neutral venue.

  • Tesla’s infotainment system can be hacked remotely by hackers: Report

Tesla’s infotainment system can be hacked remotely by hackers: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Malicious hackers can remotely turn off the lights, honk the horn, open the trunk, and activate the windshield wipers by hacking into the Tesla’s infotainment system, the media reported.

The researchers, who work for France-based security firm Synacktiv, discovered the three vulnerabilities that can be used to hack into Tesla.

The worst-case scenario enabled by these vulnerabilities, at least as far as the researchers are aware, is to annoy and potentially disrupt a driver, reports TechCrunch.

However, Tesla told the researchers that they couldn’t have turned on and off the car, or steered the wheel.

But, one of the researchers, Eloi Benoist-Vanderbeken, believes it might have been possible, said the report.

“Tesla mentioned we wouldn’t be able to turn the steering wheel, accelerate or brake. But from our understanding of the car architecture we are not sure that this is correct, but we don’t have proof of it,” Vanderbeken was quoted as saying.

The researchers didn’t have full access to a Tesla at that time, but they look forward to fact-checking the company’s statements once they do.

Moreover, the report mentioned that the first vulnerability was exploitable via Bluetooth, the second one allowed the researchers to elevate their privileges and become root (cybersecurity lingo for the highest level of system access — giving them free rein to execute code in the infotainment system), and the last one gave them control of the security gateway, a component that sends some commands to the car.

“It’s not at the point of a modern browser running on an iPhone or an Android, but it’s not that far from it. Tesla cars are really well connected to the internet, so they need to take care of security because they are likely to be targeted more than other cars,” Vincent Dehors, Cyber Security Engineer, Synacktiv, was quoted as saying.

Further, the researchers mentioned that Tesla is working on patches for these vulnerabilities, which should be pushed to cars soon, according to the report.

Last month, Tesla paused the rollout of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta software in the US and Canada until a firmware update can be issued to address a safety recall.

“Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on certain Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles that have installed or are pending installation of software that contains the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta feature,” Tesla wrote on the support page.
