Babita alleges oversight panel member snatched report from her, ‘ridiculous’ says Radhica

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former wrestler Babita Phogat on Tuesday claimed that fellow oversight committee member Radhica Sreeman snatched the final report on sexual harassment allegations against WFI chief Bri Bhushan Sharan Singh from her before she could read the findings in full, a charge vehemently denied by the former sports administrator.

Babita, who was included in the government’s probe panel to investigate the allegations on the insistence of protesting wrestlers, alleged that she had some objections but Radhica did not let her read the report in full.

“I had read just a few pages of the final report and I had some objections but Radhica Sreeman came and snatched the report. She said since I belong to the same family (Phogat), that is holding the protest, I can’t read the report,” Babita told PTI.

    MS Education Academy

“She was working on behalf of the chairman (Mary Kom) and told me that the chairman has taken a decision (on signing of the report).”

When contacted by PTI, Radhica dismissed the charge as “ridiculous”.

“Why will I do that? What benefit I will accrue by doing something like that. In fact she read the report 4-5 times and agreed to the findings. Each and every word that was written in the report, was explained to her,” Radhica said.

“Whatever was written in the report is based on testimonies of all those who appeared in the hearing and everything is video recorded, it can’t be tampered with. If at all I snatched the report from her why didn’t she write that in her dissent note,” questioned the veteran administrator.

“This is a baseless charge. In fact on the eve of Holi, all the members sat and whatever was being drafted, based on the hearings, Babita was explained each and every word and she was satisfied.”

Radhica also said that all members of the committee were requested to assemble at SAI headquarters on April 4 for the signing of the report, but Babita did not turn up.

“Even her phone was switched off that day. She said her baby was unwell so we asked her to come on April 5 and sign the report. Since everyone else had arrived on April 4, the chairman (Mary Kom) decided that members who are present can sign the report and Babita can do that later,” explained Radhica.

The government had formed the oversight committee, headed by legendary boxer MC Mary Kom, to look into the allegations levelled by the wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia.

Others in the six-member panel included former wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former shuttler Trupti Murgunde, Radhica and Rajesh Rajagopalan, ex-CEO, Target Olympic Podium Scheme.

The panel submitted its report on April 5 but the government has not yet made public its findings.

However, PTI has learnt that the probe panel has given Brij Bhushan a clean chit with a 5-1 verdict.

As the wrestlers returned to Jantar Mantar to resume their protest and approach the Supreme Court, Vinesh said Babita is more worried about her political career than the cause of the wrestlers.

When asked why she has not visited the protest site, like she did the last time in January, Babita said, “I was with the wrestlers and will remain with them. I am under no political pressure.”

  • Biden to launch re-election campaign next week: Report

Biden to launch re-election campaign next week: Report

    [ad_1]

Washington: US President Joe Biden is preparing to announce his re-election campaign next week, a media outlet has reported.

Biden’s team has been working on a video that could be released on Tuesday, the fourth anniversary of his 2020 election run, The Washington Post reported, citing unidentified officials, who, it added, have warned that the official announcement could be delayed.

President Biden has been signalling a willingness to seek a second term even as a debate rages, including in the Democratic party, about his fitness for it given his age. He is 80 now and already the oldest President in US history. He will be 86 at the end of his second term if he wins.

    MS Education Academy

Biden said last October that it’s his “intention” to seek a second term and that he will decide in consultation with his family. He repeated that in an interview with a US media outlet in February. Though he did not go any further, his wife, First Lady Jill Biden did, saying he will run as he is “not done yet”.

The 2024 run will be his fourth campaign for the White House. He first ran in 1988 and then in 2008, which was won by President Barack Obama, who picked him for his vice-president. Biden was widely expected to run in 2016, at the end of Obama’s second term, but gave it a miss.

Biden succeeded on his third, in 2020, and now his fourth.

As sitting President, the Democratic party nomination is his, even though two people have announced so far their desire to seek it as well – self-help author Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a nephew of late President John F. Kennedy and son of Robert F. Kennedy, whose run for the White House was ended by his assassination. Neither of them is capable of mounting a credible challenge to the President.

The Republican line-up is still taking shape with former President Donald Trump, who has already announced; Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the UN and Asa Hutchinson, the former governor of Arkansas the others. Also preparing to jump is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has emerged as the palatable Trump; former Vice-President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

All eyes are on Trump. He leads all polls of Republican contenders, but is beset with mounting legal troubles, including an indictment in a New York court. He won’t be deterred by these cases, he has said, and he could, legally and constitutionally, continue his run even if was jailed.

Meta to slash around 4K high-skilled jobs this week: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly set for another round of mass layoffs on Wednesday that will affect at least 4,000 highly-skilled employees, the media reported.

This week’s layoffs could be in the range of 4,000 jobs, according to a report in Vox, citing sources.

In March, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company would cut 10,000 jobs in the coming months.

    MS Education Academy

In an internal memo seen by The Washington Post, Meta said that “the company will begin notifying employees on its technical teams whose jobs are being cut”.

Meta will also announce newly reorganised teams and management hierarchies, the report mentioned.

“Facebook parent company Meta will announce details about new job cuts on Wednesday, part of a months-long downsizing and restructuring effort that will trim 10,000 employees amid multiple waves of layoffs,” The Washington Post tweeted on Wednesday.

In March, Zuckerberg announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

Zuckerberg said that overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired”.

The fresh cuts came just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

  • Canada needs 30 thousand new immigrants in agri sector: Report

Canada needs 30 thousand new immigrants in agri sector: Report

    [ad_1]

Toronto: Canada needs 30,000 permanent immigrants over the next decade to either start up their own farms, or take over existing ones, to address a looming labour crisis in the agriculture industry, says a new study.

According to a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) research, 40 per cent of Canadian farm operators will retire by 2033, placing agriculture on the cusp of one of the biggest labour and leadership transitions in the country’s history.

Over the same period, a shortfall of 24,000 general farm, nursery and greenhouse workers is expected to emerge, and in 10 years, 60 per cent of today’s farm operators will be over the age of 65, that is, close to retirement.

    MS Education Academy

Amidst all this, 66 per cent of producers do not have a succession plan in place, leaving the future of farmland in doubt, the study said.

Canada’s agricultural sector is among the most diverse in the world though the degree of demand for foreign workers differs significantly by province and operation.

When it comes to more highly-skilled farm operators, Canada has always welcomed them from India, the Netherlands, China, the US and the UK.

However, in case of immigration of low-skilled labourers, better policies are needed because the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) program, which remains a critical source of low-skilled labour, is just a provisional solution to a chronic issue, the study said.

Many of these TFWs who develop skills essential to seeding and harvests, must return to their home countries for short periods, and if they are unable to return to Canada, the country’s on-farm workforce is dramatically reduced.

RBC researchers said that a pathway to permanent residency for experienced TFWs will immediately address this type of shortage.

Canada had started an agriculture-specific immigration pilot programme in 2020 to give a path to permanent residency for non-seasonal workers with experience, which is set to end in May 2023, a CBC News report said.

As of February 2023, more than 1,500 people have been admitted through the program in Ottawa province.

A department spokesperson told CBC that they are assessing the pilot programme “and the possible extension beyond its scheduled expiry”.

The spokesperson added that giving migrants permanent residence “is not the solution to labour shortages”.

  • Hyderabadis watch OTT shows for at least 3 hours a day, 52% in Hindi: Report

Hyderabadis watch OTT shows for at least 3 hours a day, 52% in Hindi: Report

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A recent study shows that with an average watch time of over 3 hours every day, 52 percent of over-the-top (OTT) content consumers in the city prefer Hindi language content, 28 percent prefer English content while only 14 percent gravitate towards Telugu content.

Among the female audience, 60 percent prefer Hindi and English content over Telugu, says the Hyderabad-based marketing consultancy, Red Matter Technologies’ (RMT) new report ‘Understanding Paid OTT Subscribers of Hyderabad’.

The report also observes that regional players are struggling to gain penetration and affinity among the people on OTT platforms.

    MS Education Academy

The report says that the audience of Hyderabad is indulging in over 3 hours of OTT content every day, with weekends showing 10 percent higher viewership than weekdays.

For city dwellers, OTT viewing is predominantly a mobile experience, with more than half inclined to consume content on the go.

Speaking about the report, RMT’s chief executive officer, Srikant Rajasekharuni said, “OTT platforms have become an integral part of our daily lives, and this report provides valuable insights into the viewing habits of Hyderabad’s paid subscribers.”

Regarding preferred platforms, the report identified three segments – big tech platforms like Prime Video with 70 percent of users, followed by broadcast and regional platforms.

The report’s key audience is individuals who are quite active on the internet, spend money on internet subscriptions, and are primarily working.

The report shows that 77 percent of the audience who subscribe to OTT platforms in the city have an average total household income of approximately Rs 60000 per month.

Hyderabad’s under-26 population prefers watching their OTT shows alone as they tend to gravitate towards more personal and individualistic shows. More than half of the above 35 population of the city, that is 55 percent of them, show a stronger preference towards watching TV with family members.

The report also says that 62 percent of the audience have an active music streaming service, while cable usage was at 58 percent.

  • Google may be working on new AI-powered search engine: Report

Google may be working on new AI-powered search engine: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Amidst rising competition from Microsoft and OpenAI, Google is reportedly developing an all-new AI-powered search engine, the media reported.

The company is currently in the early phases of developing a search service that aims to provide a highly personalised experience by anticipating the users’ needs, reports Engadget.

However, the project has “no clear timetable”.

    MS Education Academy

The New York Times first reported the news.

Moreover, the report mentioned that Google is also developing a suite of new AI features for its existing search engine under the codename “Magi”.

Among the features the tech giant is working on is a chatbot that can answer software engineering inquiries and create code snippets.

The company has also tested a function that would allow users to search for music via a chatbot conversation.

“We’ve been bringing AI to Google Search for years to not only dramatically improve the quality of our results, but also introduce entirely new ways to search, such as Lens and multisearch,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“We’ve done so in a responsible and helpful way that maintains the high bar we set for delivering quality information. Not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new AI-powered features to Search, and will share more details soon,” it added.

Other new features “in various stages of development” include a Chrome feature called “Searchalong”, which will enable a chatbot to scan the webpage you’re reading and provide contextual information, according to the report.

Further, the report said that Google plans to announce “Magi” next month before introducing additional new features sometime in the fall.

Infosys shares fall over 9%; mcap declines by Rs 59349 cr post-Q4 earning report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Shares of Infosys on Monday tanked more than 9 per cent, wiping out Rs 59,349.66 crore from its market valuation after the company reported lower-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter net profit and gave a weak 4-7 per cent revenue growth guidance for FY24.

The stock tumbled 9.40 per cent to settle at Rs 1,258.10 on the BSE. During the day, it plunged 12.21 per cent to Rs 1,219 — its 52-week low mark.

On the NSE, it fell 9.37 per cent to finish at Rs 1,259.

    MS Education Academy

Infosys was the biggest drag on both the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty.

The company’s market valuation also declined by Rs 59,349.66 crore to Rs 5,21,930.34 crore.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 520.25 points or 0.86 per cent to finish at 59,910.75, pulled down by Infosys and weak trends in other IT counters.

“The real damage was done by the frontline IT stocks with Infosys coming under severe hammering after its corporate earnings failed to meet street estimates. Besides disappointing results, worries of weak IT spending by multinational giants on gloomy economic conditions and recessionary fears have weighed heavily on the sector over the past few months,” Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research (Retail) at Kotak Securities Ltd, said.

Other IT firms also faced heavy drubbing, with Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro falling in the range of 1-5.25 per cent.

The IT index tanked 4.77 per cent to settle at 26,887.72.

“The worse-than-expected Q4 results from Infosys with only 4-7 per cent revenue growth for FY24 will drag down IT stocks impacting the Nifty,” V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said.

On Thursday, Infosys reported lower-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter net profit and gave a weak 4-7 per cent revenue growth guidance for FY24 amid the tightening of IT budgets by clients following turmoil in the US banking sector.

Infosys’ latest report card was a disappointment on several fronts – the company missed revenue guidance for FY23 hit by “unplanned project ramp downs and decision-making delays by some clients”, the company said.

With global macroeconomic uncertainties looming, it has given a subdued 4-7 per cent revenue growth forecast for FY24, with top management cautioning that “the environment remains uncertain”.

The company had last given single-digit revenue guidance in FY19.

India’s second-biggest software services firm posted a 7.8 per cent year-on-year growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 6,128 crore for the March quarter. But the profit fell 7 per cent when compared to the preceding December quarter.

Revenue growth in constant currency for FY23 came in at 15.4 per cent, lower than the guidance. Notably, during the Q3 earnings announcement in January this year, Infosys which competes in the market with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro and other IT firms — had raised FY23 revenue guidance to 16-16.5 per cent (against the previously projected band of 15-16 per cent).

Infosys’ Q4 year-on-year growth was 8.8 per cent and the sequential decline was 3.2 per cent in constant currency terms.

Revenue rose 16 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of FY23 to Rs 37,441 crore but declined 2.3 per cent when compared to December 2022 quarter.
