Musk replaces Twitter’s blue bird logo with ‘Doge’ meme

Washington: Yet again, Twitter CEO Elon Musk is back with new updates for the micro-blogging site, and this time he has changed the iconic blue bird logo – which has served as a home button on the web version, with the “doge” meme of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.
Twitter users noticed the ‘doge’ meme, which is part of the logo of the Dogecoin blockchain and cryptocurrency and was created as a joke in 2013, on the web version of Twitter on Monday.
Musk also shared a hilarious post on his account wherein the ‘doge’ meme (which features the face of a Shiba Inu) in the car and telling the police officer, who seems to be seeing his driving license, that his photo has been changed.

Notably, there was no change on Twitter’s mobile app.
It is pertinent to mention that the doge image (of a Shiba Inu) is well-known as the logo of the Dogecoin blockchain and cryptocurrency, which was created as a joke in 2013 — to mock other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Variety reported.
Twitter’s CEO also shared the screenshot of the March 26, 2022, conversation between him and the anonymous account where the latter was asking to change the bird logo to “doge.” Sharing this post on Twitter, Musk wrote, “As promised.”
According to Variety, Musk, who bought Twitter last fall in a USD 44 billion deal, is a well-known superfan of the Doge meme and he has promoted Dogecoin both on Twitter and during his appearance last year hosting “Saturday Night Live.” After the change to Twitter’s web logo Monday, the value of Dogecoin rose more than 20 percent.
After Musk tweeted in March 2022, prior to mounting his eventually successful bid to buy Twitter, “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” Musk tweeted.

@WSBChairman had responded, “just buy Twitter… and change the bird logo to a doge.” Musk responded, “Haha that would be sick”.
He had also posted another photo stating, “Seize the Memes of Production.”
Earlier, on February 15, Musk’s love for ‘doge’ was visible as he posted the photograph of the Dogecoin blockchain and cryptocurrency logo, posing as the CEO, on his account with the caption, “The new CEO of Twitter is amazing.”

Bypoll impact: Mamata replaces minority affairs minister, takes charge herself

Kolkata: The defeat in the recent bypoll to the Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, which hinted at substantial erosion of a dedicated vote-bank in the minority-dominated erstwhile Trinamool Congress stronghold, has prompted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to replace the minister in charge of minority affairs and madrasa education and take charge of the same herself.
The decision to remove Ghulam Rabbani as the minority affairs minister was announced on Monday, when it was also said that the affairs of the department will now be under the purview of the Chief Minister. Rabbani has been transferred to the horticulture department.
The current minister of state in charge of MSMEs and textiles department, Chandranath Sinha, has been given the additional charge of minister of state for minority affairs and madrasa education.
In the Sagardighi bypoll, Left Front supported Congress candidate Bayron Biswas had defeated Trinamool’s Debashis Banerjee by a margin of 22,980 votes. The result came as a shocker for Trinamool, as Sagardighi — a minority-dominated constituency — was a traditional stronghold of the ruling party, where it won by big margins since 2011.
Recently, Trinamool had also reshuffled the party’s minority cell.
Now the Chief Minister herself taking charge of the minority affairs and madrasa education department becomes significant in West Bengal’s evolving political situation.

Stephen Benjamin, the former mayor of Columbia, S.C., will be the new senior adviser and director of the Office of Public Engagement, replacing Keisha Lance Bottoms, the White House announced on Monday.
Benjamin previously served as Columbia’s mayor from 2010 to 2021 and currently sits as the CEO and president of the Benjamin Firm, LLC. As mayor, he served as the president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors from 2018 to 2019 and the president of the African American Mayors Association from 2015 to 2016.
“Mayor Benjamin is a longtime public servant, who has served the people of South Carolina for over two decades statewide and as a three-term mayor of Columbia,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “As a former President of both the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the African American Mayors Association, Steve’s deep relationships with communities across the country will serve our Administration and the American public well.”

RSS’ Hindusthan Samachar replaces PTI as Prasar Bharati’s news feed source: Report

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-backed news organisation Hindusthan Samachar will now serve as the sole source of news for India’s public broadcaster Prasar Bharati’s daily news feed.
Prasar Bharati, which operates Doordarshan and All India Radio, inked an exclusive deal with Hindusthan Samachar on February 14, 2023, nearly two years after cancelling its subscription with the Press Trust of India (PTI), India’s largest and oldest professional news agency, The Wire reported.
Since 2017, Hindusthan Samachar has offered Prasar Bharati its wire services free of charge and on an ‘evaluation basis.’
However, a written agreement between the two parties states that Prasar Bharati will give Hindusthan Samachar close to Rs 7.7 crore over the course of two years, with payment terminating in March 2025. According to the deal, Hindusthan Samachar must offer Prasar Bharati with at least 100 news pieces every day, including at least 40 ‘local stories’ in regional languages and 10 national news items, The Wire stated in its report.
Shivram Shankar Apte, a senior RSS pracharak and co-founder of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad alongside RSS ideologue MS Golwalkar, launched Hindusthan Samachar, a multilingual news organisation, in 1948.
The Narendra Modi government’s recent bitter run-ins with news organisations PTI and United News of India (UNI) during the past few years preceded Prasar Bharati’s newest decision to legally induct Hindusthan Samachar.
Sources in Prasar Bharati told The Wire that in 2017, the government gave the public broadcaster the go-ahead to stop providing these news firms’ services due to their ‘unreasonable’ subscription costs. The agencies were paid Rs 15.75 crore annually, of which over Rs 9 crore went to PTI’s costs, according to a 2017 article by The Wire.
The sources further hinted that the Modi administration wanted a news outlet that only presented ‘favourable’ views of the government and that it considered both PTI and UNI delivered ‘slanted’ news feeds.

Since 2014, the Modi government has had major and minor issues with the PTI’s independent news coverage. Nevertheless, issues came to a head when in 2020, a top Prasar Bharati official, Samir Kumar, had written to PTI’s chief marketing officer claiming the news agency’s ‘recent news coverage’ on the Ladakh stalemate was damaging to ‘national interest’ and harmed ‘India’s territorial integrity’.
“It is also mentioned that the PTI had…been time and again alerted by the Public Broadcaster on editorial lapses resulting in dissemination of wrong news harming public interest,” the letter added.
The report further states that,in the aftermath of the Ladakh border stalemate, the centre was upset by PTI’s interviews with the Chinese envoy to India and the Indian ambassador to China in 2020.
Hindusthan Samachar, whose stated mission is to present news from a ‘nationalist’ perspective, was forced to close its doors in 1986 due to a financial crisis. The RSS, however, revived it in 2002 during AB Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Several oppostion leaders reacted negatively to the development.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP and former CEO of Prasar Bharati Jawhar Sircar remarked that it’s ‘best’ to merge Prasar Bharati and BJP.
“Finally. Best to merge Prasar Bharati and BJP,” he tweeted.
Kerala Former finance minister Thomas Isaac called the development as bringing Prasar Bharati under the ‘RSS heel’.
“Hindustan Samachar, controlled by RSS replaces PTI as news agency for Doordarshan and AIR. An exclusive contract has been signed for this purpose by Prasar Bharati with Hindustan Samachar. Instead of granting autonomy to Prasar Bharati GoI has decided to bring it under RSS heel,” he tweeted.

ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former middle-order batter Haroon Rasheed as chief selector on Monday.
In a press conference in Lahore, PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), told reporters on Monday that Haroon will be heading the new selection committee but the remaining members would be decided later.
Najam Sethi made it clear that negotiations with Mickey Arthur were still going on and in next two or three days a final announcement would be made on the new head coach of the Pakistan team.
Rasheed will replace Shahid Afridi, who had been appointed interim chief selector ahead of Pakistan’s second test match against New Zealand late last month.
The cricket management committee had named Shahid Afridi as interim chief selector soon after coming into power, and Sethi had wanted him to continue on long-term basis but the former all-rounder refused, insisting he had lot of commitments with his foundation and charity work.
Rasheed previously served as chief selector in 2015-16 and also played 23 test matches and 12 ODIs for Pakistan from 1977-83. He has also served as the PCB’s director of cricket operations and as the national team’s manager.
