Twitter recently removed the verification badges of several high-profile individuals, including former President Donald Trump, billionaire philanthropist George Soros, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. The move has sparked controversy and speculation about Twitter’s motives, with some users criticizing the company’s lack of transparency and consistency in its verification process.
Twitter’s verification badge is meant to identify accounts belonging to public figures, journalists, and other notable individuals, and is a highly coveted symbol of credibility and authenticity on the platform. However, the company has faced criticism in the past for its opaque and inconsistent verification process, which has led to confusion and frustration among users.
Twitter recently introduced a paid verification system, allowing users to apply for a verification badge for a fee. However, the move has been met with skepticism and criticism from some, who argue that it will only exacerbate existing inequalities on the platform.
The recent removal of the verification badges of high-profile figures like Trump, Soros, Gates, and Clinton has added fuel to this controversy. Twitter has not provided an official explanation for the removal of these badges, which has only added to the controversy and confusion surrounding the issue.

New Delhi: National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has removed paragraphs from Class 12 Political Science textbooks that contained information about the ban briefly imposed on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by the then government after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
Along with this, paragraphs which stated that Gandhi’s quest for Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists have also been removed from the curriculum.
Significantly, NCERT had made several changes in the textbooks of Class 6 to Class 12 last year. Among these, chapters titled ‘Rise of Popular Movements’ and ‘Era of One Party Dominance’ were removed from Class 12 textbook, ‘Politics in India since Independence’.
Similarly, chapters on ‘Democracy and Diversity’, ‘Popular Struggles and Movements’, and ‘Challenges to Democracy’ were removed from Class 10 textbook ‘Democratic Politics-II’.
Significantly, in the last 15 years, Nathuram Godse was referred to in the History book of Class 12 as a ‘Brahmin from Pune’ who assassinated Gandhi, which has been removed now.
As per NCERT, they had been receiving complaints of Godse’s caste mentioned in the books from CBSE and several state education boards since long, stating that one’s caste should not be unnecessarily mentioned in school textbooks.
Speaking on the matter in Parliament, Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi stated that the syllabus of books was rationalised in view of the loss of education in the pandemic and it was done to reduce the stress faced by students.
NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said that the load of textbooks was reduced as the students had suffered a lot in the pandemic and it was an attempt to help the stressed students and as a responsibility towards society and the nation.
Along with this, the NCERT has categorically rejected allegations that the changes have been made to suit a particular ideology.
New NCERT books have arrived for the new session this year. Last year, many chapters and facts were removed from the books of various subjects in NCERT. With these changes made by NCERT, now these new books are being made available for the students.
Islamabad: The EU has removed Pakistan from its list of “High-Risk Third Countries” that do not have a robust anti-money laundering and countering terrorist financing regime, a move welcomed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday as a major development which would facilitate the cash-strapped country’s businesses.
The developments come as a much-needed breather when Pakistan faces an economic crisis.
The EU’s delegation in Pakistan termed it an “important positive step” for Pakistan.
“In line with last year’s FATF (Financial Action Task Force) decision, the EU has decided to remove Pakistan from its list of countries with high risk regarding money laundering and financing of terrorism,” it said on Twitter.
It was referring to the decision by the global money laundering and financing watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), to remove Pakistan from its list of countries under “increased monitoring”.
In a statement announcing the news on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce said the listing of Pakistan in 2018 had resulted in creating a regulatory burden affecting Pakistani companies doing business with the 27-member bloc.
Pakistan was included on the list in 2018, placing the country under additional regulatory restrictions.
The list includes countries that the European Union considers to have strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks.
Prime Minister Sharif in a Twitter post said that the decision would facilitate the country’s businesses, individuals and entities.
“De-listing of Pakistan from EU’s updated list of high-risk third-countries is a major development which would facilitate our businesses, individuals and entities,” the Pakistan leader tweeted.
PM Shehbaz also said it was a reflection of the government’s unwavering resolve to further strengthen the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) regime.
According to the Delegated Regulation, following the measures implemented to address the action plans agreed with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Nicaragua, Pakistan and Zimbabwe remedied the strategic deficiencies in their respective AML/CFT regimes and no longer pose a significant AML/CFT threat to the international financial system.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce said the EU member states’ “Obligated Entities” will no longer be required to apply “Enhanced Customer Due Diligence” while conducting transactions with individuals and legal entities established in Pakistan.
The entities include credit institutions, financial institutions, auditors, external accountants, tax advisors, notaries, independent legal professionals (acting on behalf of and for their client in any financial or real estate transaction), estate agents and individuals trading in goods.
Pakistan’s exclusion from the list would add to the comfort level of the European economic operators and is likely to ease the cost and time of legal and financial transactions by Pakistani entities and individuals in the EU, according to the ministry statement.
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a statement said that it would help Pakistan’s economy.
“Pakistani businesses and individuals would no longer be subjected to enhanced customer due diligence by European legal and economic operators,” he added.

Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) removed the picture of Lord Hanuman from the HLFT-42 aircraft model displayed at the Aero India 2023 airshow following controversy.
The picture of Lord Hanuman was embossed on the tail of the HLFT-42 aircraft model.
Union Minister for Mine, Coal, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi on Monday tweeted about the Lord Hanuman picture and expressed his happiness over it.
Taking a line of the prayer dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Joshi had shared the pictures of HLFT-42, a super jet model. “The picture of Bajrangbali (Lord Hanuman) is specially highlighted on the jet,” he had said.
The pictures went viral on social media stirring a debate on printing the image of the Hindu God image over the fighter jet. Some critical voices said that the armed forces should not have any religious representation as that would affect the morale of the soldiers.
HAL after noticing the controversy removed the picture thereby putting an end to the debate in this regard.
HLFT-42, Hindustan Lead in Fighter Trainer is regarded as the ‘Next Generation Supersonic Trainer’. The HAL is displaying the model for the first time at the Aero India Show 2023.
The jet is expected to play a critical role in modern combat aircraft training with state-of-the-art avionics like Active Electronically Scanned Array, Electronic Warfare Suite, Infrared Search and Track with Fly by Wire Control system.
Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has removed Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Jasmine Shah and AAP MP ND Gupta’s son, Naveen ND Gupta from the position of ‘Government Nominees’ on the Board of Private DISCOMS.
The LG Office informed in a statement that they have been removed for “illegally” occupying the positions, and they have been replaced by senior government officers.
“Delhi LG, VK Saxena had ordered for the immediate removal of AAP Spokesperson, Jasmine Shah, Son of AAP MP, ND Gupta- Navin Gupta and other private individuals, who had been illegally appointed as Govt Nominees on the boards of privately owned DISCOMs- BYPL, BRPL (Anil Ambani) and NDPDCL (Tata),” the statement from the LG Office read.
As per the LG Office statement, the two had “collaborated” with private representatives on boards of Anil Ambani-owned DISCOMS and “benefitted” them to the tune of Rs 8000 Cr at the cost of the public exchequer.
The Finance Secretary, Power Secretary and MD, of Delhi Transco will now represent the government on these Ambani and Tata-owned DISCOMS, as per regular practice, followed since Sheila Dikshit’s time as CM, when these DISCOMS came into existence, the statement read.
“Invoking “difference of opinion” under Article 239AA of the Constitution of India, after the Arvind Kejriwal government persisted upon their continuance on these boards, despite proven misconduct and maleficence on their part, by way of benefiting the Ambani-owned DISCOMS to the tune of more than 8000 crores, at the cost of government exchequer, Saxena had referred the matter to the President of India for a decision.
He had asked for the removal of the above-mentioned political appointees on the DISCOM boards with immediate effect, pending the President’s decision, and asked for senior Govt officials to replace them on the boards of the DICOMS,” the LG Office statement read.
Senior government officials like the Finance Secretary, Power Secretary and representatives of Government-owned GENCOS and TRANSCO, had been the norm till Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP Government nominated party functionaries as ‘Government Nominees’ on the DISCOM boards.
The statement informed that the Delhi government which owns 49 per cent of the stake in the private DISCOMS used to nominate senior government officials so that the interests of the government and people of Delhi could be taken care of, in decisions taken by the DISCOM boards.
“However, these AAP nominees on the DISCOMS, in a quid pro quo arrangement involving commissions and kickbacks, instead of acting vigilant in the interest of the people and Government of Delhi, acted in cahoots with the BRPL and BYPL boards facilitated a decision by their boards to decrease the LPSC rates from 18 per cent to 12 per cent, and in the process unduly benefitted them to the tune of Rs 8468 crores- an amount that would have gone to the Delhi Government exchequer,” the statement read.
