New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday tweeted a video clip of BJP chief J P Nadda’s remarks in Karnataka, and accused him of “threatening” the voters and calling his comments a “blatant attack on democracy”.

Tagging the clip, Ramesh said in a tweet in Hindi, “There should be a limit to devotion too, Nadda ji. Why are you threatening and scaring the people of Karnataka?”
With the blessings of the people of Karnataka, a Congress government is going to be formed, Ramesh asserted.
The Congress from its official Twitter handle also tweeted a portion of the clip to hit out at the BJP.
“BJP President J P Nadda threatens to withhold constitutional rights from the people of Karnataka if they don’t vote for the corrupt 40% BJP government,” the Congress said in a tweet.

“This is a blatant attack on democracy and shows how the BJP plans to treat the Kannadigas,” the party alleged.

“We are not subjects of a Raja but citizens of a federal country governed by the constitution,” the Congress said.
The assembly polls will be held on May 10 and the results will be announced on May 13. The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in the southern state.

Gujarat: AAP leader arrested for remarks against BJP; bail granted

Surat: Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party leader Gopal Italia was on Monday arrested in connection with a case registered in September last year for allegedly using defamatory words against state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and was granted bail.
The case was lodged in Umra police station in Surat on September 2, 2022, for using allegedly defamatory words against state BJP chief CR Paatil and Gujarat minister Harsh Sanghavi and also calling BJP workers “goons” in a video message uploaded on social media platforms.
Italia uploaded the video messages after an alleged attack on his colleague Manoj Sorathiya in Surat in August 2022.

In the video message, Italia had used some allegedly objectionable words to describe Paatil and Sangahvi and had said the attack on Sorathiya was carried out by BJP goons.
The case was being investigated by Surat Crime Branch, which arrested Italia during the day. After being released on bail, Italia said the police action was aimed at harassing him.
“Such statements are made by all political leaders against one another. How come to an FIR was lodged only against me? They (police and government) are misusing their power,” he said.
The case was registered against Italia under Indian Penal Code sections 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505 (1)(b) (offending act inducing person to commit an offence against state or public tranquillity), and 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Remarks on Art 370 abrogation: Bombay HC refuses to quash FIR against Kashmiri prof

The Bombay High Court refused a petition which sought to quash an FIR report registered against a young Kashmiri professor for his WhatsApp status that read, “August 5 Black Day for Jammu and Kashmir” in reference to the abrogation of Article 370.
Javed Ahmed Hajam, the professor of Kolhapur College, who originally hails from Baramulla in Kashmir had allegedly, in 2022, put two WhatsApp statuses in a group of parents and teachers. In one he termed August 5, 2019, a black day. On the 2nd, he greeted Pakistan for its independence on August 14.
On Friday, the bench of Justice Sunil Shukre and MM Sathaye beheld that in a democratic country like India, there is a fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19. But they said that any critical words or dissenting opinions must be expressed properly after analysing the whole situation in a sensitive matter.

“The first message which has been posted on the WhatsApp application by the petitioner is, without giving any reason and without making any critical analysis of the step taken by the Central Government towards abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution. In our view, this message has the tendency to play with the emotions of different groups of people in India as there are strong feelings of contrasting nature about the status of Jammu and Kashmir in India and, therefore, one has to tread cautiously in such a field, lest the emotions may reach up to such a level as to bring about consequences or a reasonable possibility of consequences visiting as envisaged in Section 153-A of Indian penal code (IPC),” the order stated.
Bench concluded by saying that the case was a matter of trial to investigate whether an accused is really implicated in the offence under section 153A of IPC
The court refused to quash the FIR, stating, “As of now, prima-facie it does appear to be having much impact on the mind of different groups of people, for the reasons stated just now, and therefore prima-facie constitutes the offence under Section 153-A of IPC.”
It pertains to say, Articles 370 and 35(A) which gave special status to the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state in terms of autonomy and its ability to formulate laws for the state’s permanent residents was nullified under the BJP-led government on August 5, 2019.

China backs Macron’s remarks against following US policy on Taiwan

Beijing: China on Wednesday waded into controversy over French President Emmanuel Macron’s comments in which he called for greater “European sovereignty” by not following the US policy over China and Taiwan.
“The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: Is it in our interest to accelerate (a crisis) on Taiwan? No,” Macron was quoted as saying in the interview after his recent visit to China during which he held extensive talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and later Guangzhou.
“The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction,” Macron said.

The comments were made last Friday before China launched large-scale combat drills around Taiwan that simulated sealing off the island in response to the Taiwanese president’s trip to the US last week.
Macron’s comments raised questions over the EU’s relationship with both the US and China.
“We have noticed that President Macron’s view that Europe should insist on strategic autonomy and avoid getting involved in group confrontations has attracted some criticism, especially from the United States. We are not surprised by this,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the media here while responding to the controversy over the French President’s comments.
“What we want to tell you is that some countries do not want to see other countries become independent, and always want to coerce other countries to obey their will,” he said.
“But adhering to strategic autonomy will win more respect and more friends, while coercion and pressure will only result in more resistance and opposition,” Wang said.

He said Macron paid a successful visit to China and the two sides reached important consensus, injecting new impetus into deepening China-France and China-EU cooperation.

‘Grooming gangs’ row: British Pakistani group writes to Sunak over Braverman’s remarks

London: A British Pakistani diaspora group has written an open letter to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, urging him to clarify the remarks of his Home Secretary Suella Braverman which, they say, stigmatised their community in relation to grooming gangs behind child sexual exploitation.
The British Pakistani Foundation (BPF), which claims to represent 18,000 Pakistani diaspora members, called on Sunak to ask his Cabinet minister to withdraw her “irresponsible words” as it would be perceived as normalising bigotry against the community.
Similar letters have also been issued by other Pakistani diaspora groups, all calling for the Indian-origin Cabinet minister’s comments to be withdrawn.

In a series of television interviews earlier this month ahead of the launch of a new Grooming Gangs Taskforce, Braverman said that the perpetrators of such crimes are “groups of men, almost all British Pakistani”.
“We are writing to you to share our deep concern and disappointment at the Home Secretary’s recent comments and for you not speaking out against them,” reads the open letter issued on Tuesday.
These comments singled out only the involvement of British Pakistani males in so-called grooming gangs’ and holding cultural values totally at odds with British values’, it said.
“Words have consequences by stigmatising an entire community, and making it the face’ of child sexual exploitation, the Home Secretary’s remarks will detract attention from perpetrators who don’t meet her stereotypes, harming the very victims the Home Secretary ostensibly set out to protect but also further perpetrating violence against minorities,” it reads.
The letter references a report commissioned by the UK Home Office in 2020, entitled The characteristics of group-based child sexual exploitation in the community’, which had concluded that despite some high-profile cases, links between ethnicity and this form of offending cannot be proven.

It also references the most recent conviction of 21 men and women of “white British ethnicity”, who were last week found guilty of sexually abusing young children in Walsall in the West Midlands region of England over a decade.
“The divisive and dangerous way in which the Home Secretary is seeking to portray all British Pakistani males and insinuating that the community is complicit in their actions is reprehensible,” the BPF open letter notes.
“We, therefore, ask you to immediately clarify the Home Secretary’s claims and ask her to withdraw her remarks. We also ask for your prompt engagement with the British Pakistani community, and others, on this issue to ensure that the Home Secretary’s irresponsible words, and a government led by you, are not seen as encouraging and normalising bigotry targeted at British Pakistanis,” it concludes.
Earlier this month, Sunak had condemned the political correctness which prevented action against “vile” criminals as he unveiled his new taskforce to go after grooming gangs.
“The safety of women and girls is paramount. For too long, political correctness has stopped us from weeding out vile criminals who prey on children and young women. We will stop at nothing to stamp out these dangerous gangs,” he said at the time.
Led by the police and supported by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), Downing Street says that data analysts will work alongside the new Grooming Gangs Taskforce using cutting edge data and intelligence to identify the types of criminals who carry out these offences, including police recorded ethnicity data.

‘Politics of convenience’: Sibal slams PM Modi’s ‘dynasty’ remarks in Telangana

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday accused the BJP of indulging in “politics of convenience”, as he hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on dynasty in Telangana and cited past instances of the party aligning with dynastic political families in various states.
Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad, Prime Minister Modi took a swipe at Bharat Rashtra Samithi chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and urged the state government to not allow any hindrance in the works related to the development.
In a tweet, Sibal said, “PM Takes swipe at KCR: Says corruption and dynasty go hand in hand. Why did BJP join: 1) Punjab (Akalis) 2) Andhra (Jagan) 3) Haryana (Chautalas) 4) J&K (Muftis) 5) Maharashtra (Thackerays)…Not dynasties when BJP joined them!”

“It’s called politics of convenience!” the former Union minister said.
In another tweet, Sibal said, “PM: Takes a swipe at KCR, says dynasty and corruption go hand in hand. BJP makes allegations of corruption against AAP.
No dynasty there. Need not be dynasty to allege corruption.”
“You say BJP not dynasty. Is BJP corrupt?” he said.
In his remarks in Telangana, Modi said his government has attacked the real root of corruption of dynastic forces who want to keep their control over every system.
“Should we fight against corruption or not? Should we fight against the corrupt or not? Should the country be liberated from corruption or not? Should legal steps be taken against the corrupt however big or not. Should the law be allowed to work against the corrupt or not,” he asked the gathering.

That’s why “these people” are upset and they are doing anything out of anger, Modi said.
Modi, who said corruption and ‘parivarvaad’ (dynasty) are not different from each other, maintained that every type of corruption begins to grow where there is ‘parivarvaad’.

Congress stages protests against Kailash Vijayvargiya for ‘Shurpanakha’ remarks

Bhopal: The Congress in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday staged protests against senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya over his “girls look like ‘Shurpanakha’ in bad clothes” remark and demanded his apology for “insulting” women.
In Indore city, the women’s cell of Congress held a demonstration in Rajwara area and tried to set afire the effigy of Vijayvargiya saying he had scant respect for women.
In Bhopal, women workers of the opposition party protested in front of the bungalow of Vijayvargiya’s MLA son Aakash Vijayvargiya holding flowers, called “Beshram ke phool” in Hindi.

MP Congress media department’s vice president Sangeeta Sharma told PTI the party will wait for two-three days for the Vijayvargiya senior to apologise, and if he fails to do so, a complaint will be lodged with the police in Indore.
Kailash Vijayvargiya, a BJP general secretary, had said, “When I leave for home at night, I see educated young people and children under the influence of drugs….I feel like getting down (from the car) and slapping them five to seven times to sober them up”.

A video of the religious program where the BJP leader passed the controversial remarks on Thursday went viral a day later.
“We see the goddess in women. But (with) the kind of bad dresses the girls wear and move around, they do not embody the goddess but look like ‘Shurpanakha’. God has given you a good and beautiful body…..dress well, friends,” he had said.
In the popular version of the Ramayana, Shurpanakha is the sister of the demon king Ravan.

After row, Sharad Pawar ‘clarifies’ on JPC probe remarks, bats for SC panel

Mumbai: A day after his sensational remarks expressing doubts over a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Hindenburg Research report against the Adani Group, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar on Saturday claimed that he was in favour of a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.
The senior leader also frowned at the manner in which the names of industrialists like Ambani-Adani were being tossed around to target the BJP government at the Centre instead of bigger issues like inflation, unemployment and farmers.
Clarifying his stance after the ruckus following his comments to a TV channel on Friday, Pawar said he was not opposed to the JPC probe, but if the Committee comprises 21 members, then 15 would be from the ruling side and the remaining six from the Opposition side.

In view of the imbalance, coupled with the government’s majority in both Houses of Parliament, the NCP supremo opined that the JPC report would only “endorse the government’s stand on the Adani issue”.
“I feel that instead of a JPC, a Supreme Court-appointed commission is more reliable and independent,” said Pawar, adding that he had no knowledge of the Rs 20,000 crore raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
He also attempted to delink the question of a united Opposition front vis-a-vis the demand for a JPC and said the two are not connected though his utterances sent shockwaves among the Opposition circles.
“I don’t think the demand for JPC has anything to do with Opposition unity. We have also made the same plea but it would be commanded by the ruling party, so I spoke about a SC-named panel,” declared Pawar.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said in Mumbai that “there’s nothing new in what Pawar has said”, and his statement would have no impact on the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in the state as speculated in some sections of the media.

The Congress has yet to respond in the matter after Pawar’s interview to a news channel questioning the demand for a JPC probe, the credence to be given to a report by a foreign institution.

Rich get richer, poor get poorer: Sibal’s swipe at PM’s social justice remarks

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Friday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on the BJP’s commitment to social justice, claiming that under this government the “rich get richer and the poor get poorer”.
Addressing BJP members at the party’s 44th foundation day, Modi on Thursday cited the free ration scheme, health insurance and other welfare measures, to assert that social justice was an article of faith for the BJP while other parties used the plank to advance the interest of particular families without helping society.
While the BJP thought and dreamt big and then set out to dedicate itself to achieving these goals, opposition parties could set small goals and patted each other for achieving even smaller targets, the prime minister had said.

In a tweet, Sibal said, “PM: ‘BJP lives for social justice and follows it in letter and spirit’. Facts: 1) 40 per cent of the wealth created from 2012-2021 went to only 1 per cent of the population 2) In 2022 Adani’s wealth increased 46 per cent 3) 64 per cent of GST came from the bottom 50 per cent; 4 per cent came from top 10 per cent.”
“Rich get richer the poor poorer,” Sibal claimed.
Sibal, who was a Union minister during UPA 1 and 2, quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent member with the Samajwadi Party’s support.
He recently floated a non-electoral platform ‘Insaaf’ aimed at fighting injustice.
