  • Uddhav Thackeray to skip Congress meet over Rahul’s ‘Savarkar’ remark

Uddhav Thackeray to skip Congress meet over Rahul’s ‘Savarkar’ remark

    [ad_1]

In a protest against Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Savarkar remark’, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday announced the party’s decision to skip Congress’ dinner meet in Delhi.

Uddhav on Sunday had warned Gandhi stating that he considers Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar as his “idol”, and asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to refrain from “insulting” him.

He said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of three parties – Sena (UBT), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – was formed to protect democracy and it was necessary to work unitedly for it.

Addressing a rally in the Muslim-dominated textile town of Malegaon in Nashik district of north Maharashtra, Thackeray also said that deliberate attempts were on to provoke Rahul Gandhi.

“Savarkar is our idol and his insult will not be tolerated if we have to fight together to protect our democracy. Savarkar suffered unimaginable torture in the Andaman cellular jail for 14 years. We can only read the sufferings. It is a form of sacrifice,” he said.

”I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that we have come together to save our country’s democracy and its Constitution. But you are deliberately being provoked. If we allow this time to get wasted, then democracy will cease to exist. 2024 will be the last election,” he added.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. Addressing a press conference in Delhi over his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone”.

In an instance of surprise and opposition unity against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, Trinamool Congress leaders joined the Congress’ strategy meeting in the Parliament, dressed in black as a sign of protest.

Trinamool leaders Prasun Banerjee and Jawahar Sircar came out in protest against Gandhi’s disqualification. “The question of walking together is due symbolism, which we undertook today – a special mark of solidarity against coordinated and undemocratic attacks on everyone,” Sircar had said.

Apologise to journalist: Mumbai Press Club to Rahul over ‘Kyun hawa nikal gayi?’ remark

    [ad_1]

The Mumbai Press Club on Saturday released a statement condemning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on a journalist during his press conference on the same day.

The statement said that Gandhi publicly humiliated the journalist when the latter asked “tough questions” to the former.

“The job of a journalist is to ask questions and it is the duty of political leaders who call press conferences and engage with journalists to answer these questions with dignity and decorum. It is unfortunate that as the leader of one of the oldest political parties of the country, Mr Gandhi failed to respect the dignity of the Fourth Estate,” the Mumbai Press Club said.

The statement further read, “At a broader level, it is a matter of concern that political parties of all hues have been attempting to browbeat journalists using derogatory language and threats as a response to news reporting they find unpalatable. We once again appeal to all political actors to uphold the freedom of the press to report and provide critical comments. They must remember the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression is a cornerstone of our democracy.”

“In this context, it will be appropriate for Mr Rahul Gandhi to make amends and offer an apology to the journalist concerned,” it concluded.

Gandhi was holding his first news conference after being dismissed as a Lok Sabha member on March 24.

The journalist was asking a question about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) accusation that Gandhi’s comment about Modi’s surname is an ‘insult to the OBC (other backward classes) community’.

In response, the Congress politician told the journalist, “Don’t pretend to be a pressman…Kyun hawa nikal gayi?”

AIADMK opposes Tamil Nadu CM’s remark on ‘honour killing’ accused

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The main opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, AIADMK, on Thursday strongly objected to a point made by Chief Minister M K Stalin while explaining the police action following the murder of a young man, in a case of alleged honour killing.

After Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami raised the issue of the murder that took place in Krishnagiri District and sought action, Stalin, quoting the police report, told the Assembly that Sankar, a person accused in the murder, was a local AIADMK functionary (branch secretary).

AIADMK MLAs objected to the remark and said the man was not a party office-bearer. It led to an uproar.

Speaker Appavu wondered if the Chief Minister did not have the right to mention what was reported by the police. Leader of the House Duraimurugan stated that the CM only referred to the police report and if fresh police inputs emerged later, that point — indicating to the AIADMK reference — may be changed.

Stalin said both the police and district administration had been taking all steps, including commencing initiatives to spread awareness, to prevent such crimes.

On March 21, 2023, a 28-year old man, Jagan, a construction worker, was hacked to death on a highway in Krishnagiri district allegedly by three men including Sankar, who is the father of Jagan’s wife.

Sankar is now lodged in Salem Central Prison.

Jagan had recently married Sankar’s daughter, a second-year college student, against the wishes of her family, police said. Enraged by this, Sankar and two others allegedly committed the murder.

  • Jairam Ramesh seeks CBI probe into Amit Shah’s ‘Sangma govt most corrupt’ remark

Jairam Ramesh seeks CBI probe into Amit Shah’s ‘Sangma govt most corrupt’ remark

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to summon Home Minister Amit Shah over his remark describing Meghalaya government headed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, in its previous term, as “most corrupt” and to investigate the claim.

Attaching his letter to CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, he tweeted: “I have written to the Director of CBI asking CBI to question the Home Minister further on his categorical assertion that Conrad Sangma’s Govt in Meghalaya was the most corrupt in the country

“That of course did not prevent BJP from supporting the same Conrad Sangma again”.

Ramesh, in his letter to Jaiswal, said that Shah had said in his public speech on February 17 that the then Meghlaya government headed by Sangma was the most corrupt government in the country.

“Amit Shah is also the Home Minister of India. In his capacity as the Home Minister, he would surely have had access to information and facts that led him to the above conclusion. For some inexplicable reasons, the Home Minister, who is also the former national President of Bharatiya Janata Party, has failed to act upon the information regarding the corrupt practices and instances of the then Meghalaya government,” he said.

Ramesh requested the CBI Director to summon Shah and ask him to submit all the information and facts that led him to state assessment and investigate the matter.

“We also urge you to investigate if the Home Minister of India was under any undue duress from his party or other forces, to suppress the information related to the corruption of Meghalaya, in order to enable his party Bharatiya Janata Party to support the same Chief Minister after the recent Meghalaya elections,” the letter said.

The Congress letter also attached media reports on Shah’s remarks during the campaigning for Meghalaya Assembly polls, held on February 27.

The Congress leaders in Meghalaya have been criticising the BJP for supporting a government led by National People’s Party chief Sangma even after terming the previous government led by the same party as the “most corrupt”.

The Congress also termed the NPP led coalition formed for the second consecutive term as a “marriage of convenience”.

The BJP with two MLAs is a part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government dominated by the NPP, which secured 26 seats in the 60-member Assembly. Various other local parties are supporting the MDA government.

Sonali Kulkarni apologises over ‘Indian girls are lazy’ remark

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Actress Sonali Kulkarni, who is known for her work in Marathi cinema and Hindi films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ and ‘Taxi No. 9211, recently said at an event that “Indian girls are lazy.”

She said that girls look for well-to-do boyfriends or husbands to fulfil their needs instead of being passionate about their own careers. Soon after the statement came out, the actress started receiving the flak on the Internet.

The actress took to her Instagram and shared an apology note. She wrote in the caption: “But you were right! Women who haven’t understood the context probably are hurt but on an honest note, whatever you said was right. Also, it wasn’t about every woman, it was about a few women who genuinely want it easy.”

The note started off as it read: “I’m overwhelmed with the feedback I’m receiving. I would like to thank all of you, especially the entire press and media for the extremely mature conduct of connecting with me. Being a woman myself, my intention was not to hurt other women. In fact, I have extensively expressed myself time and again in support of us and what is it being a woman.”

The actress continued in her note: “I’m grateful to all of you for reaching out to me personally to appreciate or to criticise. Hope we will be able to have a more open exchange of thoughts. In my capacity, I am trying to think, support and share warmth not only with women, but with the entire mankind. It will be only strengthening if we women with our vulnerabilities and wisdom shine through as fair and able beings. If we are inclusive and empathetic, we will be able to create a healthier, happier place to be.”

“”Having said that, if unknowingly, I may have caused pain, I want to apologise from the bottom of my heart. I do not thrive upon headlines neither do I want to be the centre of sensational situations. I’m a diehard optimist and I strongly believe that life indeed is beautiful. Thanks for your patience and support. I have learned a lot from this incident,” the actress concluded.

  • Rahul Gandhi replies to Delhi Police notice on his ‘sexual assault on women’ remark

Rahul Gandhi replies to Delhi Police notice on his ‘sexual assault on women’ remark

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday sent a four-page preliminary reply to the Delhi Police’s notice about his “women still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra while questioning the process adopted by the authorities and a sudden urgency after a 45-day delay.

The Congress leader gave the 10-point reply hours after a Delhi Police team knocked on his doors for the third time in five days. He also sought eight to 10 days to give a detailed response to the questions posed by Delhi police over his January 30 remarks, the sources said.

The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Rahul Gandhi’s 12, Tughlaq Lane, residence around 10 am and was able to meet the Congress leader after two hours, officials said, adding the team left around 1 pm.

According to the police, Gandhi stated in Srinagar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “I have heard that women are still being sexually assaulted”, and since the Yatra had passed through Delhi also, they wanted to ascertain if any victim had approached the Congress leader here so that they can initiate a probe into the matter.

“The police had asked him to give details of these victims so that security could be provided to them,” an official said.

Sending a preliminary reply a little before 4 pm, Gandhi termed the police action “unprecedented” and asked whether this had anything to do with his position taken both inside and outside Parliament on the Adani issue, sources said.

According to them, Gandhi also asked what was the urgency on the part of the Delhi Police in making two visits in as many days after an initial gap of 45 days after he made his speech in Srinagar.

The former Congress chief, the sources said, asked whether any other political party, including the ruling party, has been subjected to such kind of scrutiny or questioning over their political campaigns.

An angry Congress has condemned the Delhi Police action and attacked the Central government, calling it the “worst case of harassment and political vendetta”, but the BJP rejected the charge and said the police was “only discharging its lawful duty”.

Karnataka: Man delivers Azaan outside DC office in protest against BJP MLA’s remark

    [ad_1]

Following former minister and BJP leader K S Eshwarappa’s recent comments on Azaan, a Muslim man delivered the Azaan in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Shivamogga district, Karnataka.

A group of Muslim men holding flags protested against the BJP MLA’s statements. They even tried to barge into the DC’s office.

Eswarappa stirred a fresh controversy in Karnataka by stating that “Does Allah listen only if the Azaan prayers are played on loudspeakers?”.

Speaking at a rally organised as part of the Vijay Sankalp Yatra on Sunday, Eshwarappa said, “Will Allah listen only if the prayers are done through loudspeakers…this makes me question if He is deaf.”

His statements received backlash from the Muslim community. However, the former minister defended his statements saying India is a Hindu Rashtra.

“In the entire world India is the only country for Hindus. We are protecting the Hindu dharma. But if they (Muslims) continue this practice (of giving Azaan) through loudspeakers then we have to admit he (Allah) is deaf. So I think this issue should be addressed at the earliest,” he told reporters.

“I did not mean to condemn any religion but was voicing the sentiments of the public. Let me give you an example. When the Azaan is pronounced near an examination center, students face inconvenience. The same goes for patients in hospitals,” he added.

Maha: Speaker grants more time to Sanjay Raut to clarify his controversial remark

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Wednesday said he has accepted Rajya Sabha member and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut’s request for more time to submit a written clarification on his “chor-mandal” remark.

Narvekar said he has received a communication from Raut seeking more time for submitting a written reply. “I have accepted the request,” he said without specifying how much time has been given to Raut.

The speaker said Raut had been asked on March 1 to submit his written response by March 3.

“I have received a communication from him today. The response was sought as part of natural justice. My view was that the remarks referring to the legislature as a body of thieves’ was an insult to the House,” he said.

Earlier, Raut had sparked chaos in the House after he called the legislature a “chor-mandal” (council of thieves). His comment also prompted members of the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena to submit to the speaker a notice for breach of privilege motion against the MP.
