The deceased were identified as Imam Kasim (43) and S Mohammed Rafiq (49) of Sankarapuram block of Kallakurichi district in the State, a government release said.

The two persons, besides a couple from Kerala, were among 16 people who died after a massive fire broke out at a residential building in Dubai.

The fire at the building in Dubai’s old neighbourhood of Al Ras at 12.35 pm on Saturday left nine persons injured. The flames were doused by 2:42 pm local time.

“I am deeply saddened by the incident,” Stalin said. The bodies of the deceased would be brought to Tamil Nadu soon through the Indian Embassy; and Minorities Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Minister Gingee K S Masthan has been asked to expedite the process, the Chief Minister said in the release.

The former Union minister said in a tweet that both the Central and State governments should take necessary steps to bring the mortal remains of the two persons to their hometown immediately. “I request that a compensation of Rs 50 lakh be given to the families of the deceased. @CMOTamilnadu,” Ramadoss said.

  •  Supreme Court rejects bid to block major class-action settlement on student debt relief

Supreme Court rejects bid to block major class-action settlement on student debt relief

    [ad_1]

Conservatives had seized on the case as a way to rein in Joe Biden’s efforts to cancel student debt and attack a potential backup plan to enact mass loan forgiveness if the Supreme Court strikes down his debt relief program in two other pending cases.

The three college operators were challenging the same law — the Higher Education Act’s “compromise” authority — that is widely seen as a fallback option for Biden. The administration’s existing student debt relief program is tied to the Covid-19 national emergency under a 2003 law known as the HEROES Act.

Everglades College Inc., Lincoln Educational Services Corporation and American National University argued that the settlement unfairly maligns them. About 3,800 of the colleges’ former students who said they were defrauded are set to receive relief under the settlement, but the schools note that those allegations were never proven.

The settlement, which the Education Department agreed to last year, came after years of litigation that accused the agency of mishandling and delaying applications by borrowers seeking loan forgiveness based on the misconduct of their college.

The deal is aimed at wiping out a backlog of hundreds of thousands of those applications, which are known as “borrower defense” claims. Some have languished at the department for years.

The Biden administration and attorneys who represent the student loan borrowers had argued that the three colleges lacked standing to challenge the settlement in the first place, dismissing the schools’ claims of reputational harm as too speculative.

In its brief earlier this week, the Justice Department pushed back on the idea that the class-action settlement is related to Biden’s broader debt cancellation program, calling them “entirely distinct.” The settlement “does not reflect any ‘en masse’ cancellation of outstanding debt, nor an assertion by the Secretary of the power to discharge the Department’s entire $1.6 trillion loan portfolio,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote.

The decision by the Supreme Court on Thursday sends the case back to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has already set a briefing schedule to hear the colleges’ appeal of the settlement.

It’s possible the case could return to the high court after that. The justices’ ruling on Thursday addressed only emergency relief.

But in the meantime it clears the Education Department to continue processing loan discharges for tens of thousands of borrowers.

The Biden administration reported on Wednesday that it had already wiped out the debts of about 78,000 borrowers out of the roughly 200,000 borrowers who qualify for immediate relief under the settlement.

Beyond the immediate loan forgiveness, the settlement also requires the Education Department to set up a streamlined process for tens of thousands of additional borrowers to obtain loan forgiveness.

Eileen Connor, president and director of the Project on Predatory Student Lending, which represents the class of student loan borrowers in the case welcomed the court’s decision on Thursday.

“Today’s swift and decisive action from the highest court should end, once and for all, any ongoing debate about the legitimacy of this settlement,” she said in a statement. “The message is clear: the rights of student borrowers will not falter, even in the face of well-funded, politically-motivated attacks masquerading as legal argument.”

Hyderabad: The relief material collected by Indian citizens for the victims of the earthquake in the Kingdom of Syria has not reached the country as a result of international sanctions imposed on Syria and the permissions required by the Syrian embassy for the departure of aid are awaited, Syrian diplomatic sources said.

It has been decided by the diplomatic authorities that along with the receipt of permits, containers will be sent to Latakia port Syria through Mumbai port and all the items collected by the embassy in different states of the country including Hyderabad will be sent.

The devastating February 6 earthquakes that killed over 57,300 people in the two neighbouring nations of Syria and Turkiye.

Syrian journalist Vayil Odad, who lives in Delhi, said that Indian citizens have ensured generous assistance for the citizens of Syria suffering from various problems and arrangements are being made for the departure of the items received as early as possible.

He said that due to international sanctions, Syria is not only facing a war situation, but on many other fronts, the country is facing difficulties and, in this situation, the embassy also needs cooperation to transport goods from Mumbai port to Latakia port.

The Siasat Daily arranged a relief collection counter for the earthquake victims of Syria in the under-construction building adjacent to the Haj House building in Hyderabad city and collected good amount of relief for the country and during the collection of goods, it was strictly emphasized that old and used clothes should not be sent, but despite this, some irresponsible people sent not only used but also unusable clothes. Videos of cartoons opened for the purpose of isolating them are being circulated on social media. However, only after the complete verification of the goods, these items will be despatched from Mumbai port to Latakia port.

  • No SC relief for Kavitha against ED summons in liquor policy case

No SC relief for Kavitha against ED summons in liquor policy case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday did not grant stay on summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to K. Kavitha, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Kavitha had moved the apex court against her questioning and also sought protection from arrest by the ED regarding a money laundering case connected with alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Kavitha, submitted before a bench headed by Justice Ajay Rastogi that it is on the question whether she would have to be interrogated here or at her residence. Sibal added that summons were issued to his client for investigation.

The bench did not give any interim relief to her on protection from arrest or stayed the ED summons. However, the top court agreed to examine the legal point if a woman can be summoned to the ED office under CrPC/PMLA. The top court tagged it along with a similar plea filed by Nalini Chidambaram and Ruchira Banerjee, wife of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed it saying that Abhishek Banerjee’s matter is different. Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the ED, said summons have been issued and this petition is infructuous. However, the top court listed the matter after three weeks.

Kavitha’s plea said her name has not been mentioned in the FIR registered by the CBI in connection with alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi’s deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was also arrested by the CBI for alleged corruption in framing a new liquor policy, which was later withdrawn.

Kavitha’s counsel had previously told the court that she had appeared before the ED earlier this month but the repeated summons were contrary to law because the petitioner was a woman. “That despite the petitioner not being named in the FIR, certain members of the incumbent ruling political party at the Centre made scandalous statements linking the petitioner to the Delhi excise policy…,” said the plea.

Kavitha accused the ED of acting in “extremely shameful” manner and as per a “larger conspiracy orchestrated at the behest of the members of the incumbent ruling party at the Centre”.

The petitioner claimed the ED is eliciting false statements from other witnesses by threatening to place them and their family members under arrest.

“The petitioner believes that the investigation against her is nothing more than a fishing expedition being undertaken by the Enforcement Directorate solely at the behest of the incumbent ruling political party,” added the plea.

It further contended that the ED, in teeth of settled law, summoned her to appear before their offices in New Delhi and has confiscated her cellular phone without any written order for production of the phone.

The plea claimed that the petitioner apprehends that she would be physically and mentally coerced by the ED and stressed that there is no case against her.

The plea added that the only basis on which she has been implicated is on the basis of certain statements of a few persons who have given incriminating statements themselves as well as allegedly against her. Kavitha had earlier been questioned by the CBI in the case.

It has been alleged that Kavitha held benami investment in Indospiritis, a liquor firm involved in the scam. ED alleged Arun Ramchandran Pillai represented Kavitha in Indospirits.

The investigating agency has also alleged the South lobby, which included Kavitha, bribed the AAP government to formulate an excise policy to facilitate the companies to win the bids and to form a cartel and control the retail outlets in Delhi.

  •  Relief In Offing As Two Tunnels, A Bridge To Be Functional Soon On NH-44

Relief In Offing As Two Tunnels, A Bridge To Be Functional Soon On NH-44

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The commuters are all set to have a safe journey along Srinagar-Jammu highway by the end of March month as the authorities here have said that the two important tunnels and a bridge in Ramban district of Jammu region will be made functional this month.

Jammu-Srinagar national highway is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Quoting officials, news agency KNO reported that work on several projects in Ramban district is in progress.

“800-metre-long T5 tunnel on Panthyal stretch of the highway is set to be thrown open by March 15 while Jaiswal bridge on Udhampur-Ramban section to be made operational by March 20 and Kunfer tunnel is also expected to be completed by March 31, besides double lane of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass to be completed by April 15 this year,” they said.

Two tunnels, having a total length of 1,680 meters, would put an end to the ‘phantom of shooting stones’ and traffic disruptions along the stretch, officials said.

The twin tunnels will not only reduce the travel time of commuters, but will also completely bypass the difficult landslides and shooting stone prone areas along the stretch, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Mussarat Islam said all the projects on Jammu Srinagar national highway will be completed by stipulated time frame. “Work on the 800-meter T-5 Tunnel to bypass Panthyal stretch, which is vulnerable to shooting stones on highway, has been accelerated so that it becomes operational by March 15, 2023”, he said.

Mussarat said work is also in progress for double laning of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass which will be completed by April 15 this year. After the competition of these projects, people travelling on Jammu-Srinagar highway would be able have a safe journey, he added.
