Big relief for vehicle owners, no re-registration, no fee for outside J&K vehicles
Srinagar, May 5: The Jammu Kashmir Government has submitted a report informing the court that it has implemented its directions with regard to the re-registration of outside vehicles in letter and spirit and no registration fee will be charged from the owners of the vehicles procured from outside Jammu and Kashmir.
The Transport Department submitted its report in the court of Chief Justice N Koteswar Singh in which it has been clearly stated that the department has implemented the court directions in letter and spirit and the owners of outside J&K vehicles don’t have to pay the nine percent registration fee.
It is noteworthy that the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir had issued an order under Motor Vehicle Act on 27 March 2021 stating that the vehicles registered outside states operating in Kashmir must be re-registered in Valley and the owners of such vehicles have to pay a registration fee of 9% of the total value of the vehicle.
After the order, the Jammu and Kashmir Police seized scores of vehicles with outside registration numbers. While the vehicle owners were greatly disturbed by this ‘diktat’, the car dealers also suffered losses as there were no buyers for their vehicles.
The order as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust was challenged in court by a local consumer after his vehicle was seized by the police. He filed a petition in the High Court claiming that RTO’s order is a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Constitution.
The court quashed the RTO’s order, however, the Transport Commissioner issued yet another notice directing owners of vehicles from outside Jammu and Kashmir to re-register and pay a 9% fee.
Shortly after this, the petitioner filed a contempt petition against the transport department.
The court sought a reply from the officials of the transport department and directed them to submit the report by December 2021.

The transport department, however, filed a report on May 3 after two years and informed the court that the department was complying with the court’s directions. The court accordingly disposed of the contempt of court case against the transport department. [KNT]

Big Relief: Mother Dairy Cuts MRP Of Dhara Cooking Oils- Check News Rates Here – Kashmir News

Mother Dairy has cut maximum retail prices (MRP) of its edible oils, sold under Dhara brand, by Rs 15-20 per litre with immediate effect in line with the reduction in global prices.
The stock with revised MRP is expected to hit the market next week.
The reduction comes following the food ministry’s direction to edible oil industry body SEA regarding the need for downward revision of the MRP of cooking oils.
“The MRP of Dhara edible oils are being reduced by Rs 15-20 per litre across variants with immediate effect. This reduction is largely being done in variants such as soyabean oil, ricebran oil, sunflower oil and groundnut oil, on account of reduced impact of international markets and ease in availability of domestic crop,” Mother Dairy spokesperson said.
The MRP of Dhara refined soyabean oil (1 litre poly pack) has been reduced to Rs 150 from Rs 170, while the MRP of Dhara refined rice bran oil will now be Rs 170 per litre as against Rs 190 per litre earlier.
The company has revised the MRP of Dhara refined sunflower oil to Rs 160 from Rs 175 per litre.
The MRP of Dhara groundnut oil has been cut to Rs 240 from Rs 255 per litre.
Edible oil industry body Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) had advised its members to reduce MRP in line with the falling prices of edible oils.

It has sought the details of reduction in MRP during the last three months so that the same could be informed to the food ministry.
Mother Dairy manufactures, markets and sells milk and milk products, including cultured products, ice cream, paneer and ghee under the ‘Mother Dairy’ brand.
The company sells edible oils under the ‘Dhara’ brand and fresh fruits & vegetables, frozen vegetables & snacks, unpolished pulses, pulps & concentrates, etc., under the ‘Safal’ brand.
In Delhi-NCR, it has hundreds of milk booths as well as Safal retail outlets.
“The Department of Food and Public Distribution regularly review the price of edible oil in country. International prices has been sharply reduced in the last 6 months and particularly in last 60 days, however local prices, in spite of bumper crops of groundnut, soyabean and mustard, not declined in line with the International market,” SEA had said.
“While most of the brands have reduced prices in the past but still the prevailing MRP of the packed edible oil in the market is not in line with the current prices as in international market, i.e. the prices of edible oil (MRP) in domestic market seems to be on higher side considering the prevailing market scenario,” the association said.
The department had advised SEA to inform members to reduce MRP on edible oils and pass on the benefits to consumer.(PTI)

Defamation case: No interim relief for Rahul as Guj HC reserves order on revision plea

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday reserved its orders in the revision plea filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with his conviction in a defamation case that subsequently led to his disqualification as a Member of Parliament.
Rahul Gandhi had appealed to the Gujarat High Court for an interim stay of his conviction until the court pronounced its order on his petition.
However, the single judge hearing the case, Justice Hemant Prachchhak, has postponed his decision until after the summer vacation, which ends on June 4.

On April 29, Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer — Abhishek Manu Singhvi, also a Congress leader, argued in the court that his client had not committed any heinous crime or an offence involving moral turpitude, which are the two tests for denying suspension of conviction.
The case stems from a 2019 rally in Kolar, Karnataka, where Rahul Gandhi had said, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. How come all the thieves have ‘Modi’ as a common surname?”
This remark led to a criminal defamation case being filed against him by Surat BJP legislator, Purnesh Modi.
Gandhi had been sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court, leading to his disqualification as a Member of Parliament.
During the previous hearing, Justice Prachchhak had emphasised that Rahul Gandhi, being an elected representative of the people, should have been more cautious while making statements.

Singhvi had argued that the maximum punishment for a bailable, non-cognizable offence of two years could result in his disqualification, leading to a “very serious additional irreversible consequence to the person and the constituency he represents”.
Earlier this year, the Sessions Court in Surat had dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking suspension of his conviction by the Magistrate court, stating that his disqualification would not result in an irreversible loss to him.

Relief for Rahul Gandhi from Patna HC in ‘Modi surname’ case

Patna: The Patna High Court on Monday accorded some relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case related to Modi surname.
The case was filed by BJP Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi in MP-MLA court of Patna, alleging that Gandhi humiliated the community having Modi surname in the country. Gandhi, during a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar in 2019, had said that all those with the Modi surname are thieves.
During the hearing in the MP-MLA court on April 12, it had directed Gandhi to appear physically on April 25. His lawyers then went to Patna High Court to challenge the decision.

Hearing the plea, Justice Sandeep Kumar stayed the decision of the MP-MLA court and posted the next hearing for May 15.

Karnataka HC relief for Kannada actor Chetan, stays order on returning OCI card

Bengaluru: In a temporary relief to Kannada actor and anti-Hindutva activist Chetan Kumar Ahimsa, the Karnataka High Court on Monday stayed an earlier order of the Central government on the cancellation of his Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status.
Chetan Kumar had challenged the order in the court. The bench headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna has ordered that neither the state nor the central government should initiate any action against Chetan till June 2, 2023. The bench had also asked Chetan not to tweet anything about the judiciary. He was also directed not to issue any statement regarding pending cases.
The bench asked Chetan to remove all the tweets and submit an affidavit within four days. This direction is part of the final order and if any of the conditions are violated, the interim stay order will be vacated, the court told Chetan Kumar.

Senior counsel Aditya Sondhi who argued for Chetan submitted that the petitioner should have been given an opportunity to present himself before issuing the show cause notice. The Central government should establish how the tweets of Chetan amount to sedition? If the court does not grant a stay on this order, the petitioner faces the threat of being extradited from the country.
Once the OCI card is cancelled he will become an illegal immigrant. The petitioner’s interest should be protected by the court, the counsel stated.
Additional Advocate General Arun Shyam who appeared for the state government submitted in the court that the actor has the habit of tweeting against the judiciary also and hence he should not get interim protection.
The Union home ministry had cancelled the Overseas Citizenship of India status of Chetan Kumar and he was asked to surrender his OCI card within 15 days.
Condemning the move, the actor had stated that the notice has been issued to him as he can’t be defeated in his social oriented and rational work.

Chetan’s recent claim that the Tirupati temple had been built after demolishing a Buddha temple had stirred a controversy. In an interview he claimed that Hindu temples were never Vaidik institutions. He said that Hindu temples were built after destroying Buddhist temples.
Chetan in his social media post claimed that Hindutva is based on falsehood. He said the statement of BJP icon Veer Savarkar that the Hindu nation took shape when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana is incorrect.
He also stated that the claim of Ramjanmabhoomi being at the site of the Babri Masjid is also a lie. In 2023, their (BJP) statement of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda killing then Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan is also false.
Chetan underlined that Hindutva could be defeated by the truth. “Truth is equality,” his post stated.

Inflation relief camps to be organised in Rajasthan from Monday: CM Gehlot

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will inaugurate inflation relief camps, to be organised in the state from April 24 to June 30 with an aim to provide relief to people from rising prices, officials said on Sunday.
The chief minister will launch the camp at Mahapura village panchayat of Sanganer here on Monday.
In a statement, Gehlot said that the main objective of these camps is to empower the common people by giving them complete information about their rights, schemes and their eligibility.

The general public and the deprived sections will be provided relief from inflation by connecting them with the public welfare schemes of the state government.
He said that the common people will get the benefit of 10 public welfare schemes in the camps, which will provide relief from the rising inflation.
Registration has been made mandatory in the camps to join the 10 public welfare schemes run by the state government. For the convenience of the common people, a person from any district can register in the camps of other districts also through the Rajasthan government’s Jan Aadhar card, he said.
In the state, 2,000 permanent inflation relief camps will be set up by the district administration at government offices and public places.
A two-day inflation relief camp will be organised in 11,283 gram panchayats and 7,500 wards each as per the calendar.

Adequate counters will be set up in these camps for registration and distribution of the Chief Minister’s Guarantee Cards’.
In another decision, the state government has made a provision of Rs 592 crore under various schemes for farmers’ welfare.
Gehlot has approved the proposal for financial provisions to ensure the progress of the farmers, an official statement said.
Rs 4.50 crore has been allocated for spraying nano urea by drone. At the same time, 5 lakh landless labourers will be given a grant of Rs 5,000 per family to buy manual agricultural machinery. In this, the state government will spend Rs 250 crore.
In the financial year 2023-24, the state government will provide agricultural machinery worth Rs 250 crore to one lakh farmers. Along with this, a grant of up to Rs 4 lakh will be given to agriculture course graduate unemployed youths for providing 1,000 drones.
Drones will also be made available to the Farmers Production Organization (FPO) and Custom Hiring Centers. A provision of Rs 588 crore has been made from the Farmers Welfare Fund and Rs 4.60 crore (state share) under the National Agriculture Development Scheme in all these schemes by the state government.

The legislation would also bar the Biden administration from moving forward with a new income-driven repayment plan that cuts monthly payments for most borrowers and shortens the timeline to loan forgiveness for some borrowers.
In addition, the GOP plan would permanently prohibit the Education Department from issuing any significant regulation or executive action that would increase the long-term cost to the government of operating the federal student loan programs.
Such a sweeping prohibition would imperil efforts by the administration to provide additional relief or benefits to student loan borrowers. That would include any backup option for canceling large amounts of student debt if the Supreme Court rejects Biden’s student debt relief plan in the coming months.
Key context: The provisions are among dozens of policy changes and spending caps that House Republicans included in their 320-page legislation to raise the debt limit by $1.5 trillion or until March of next year, whichever comes first.
Republicans have argued that they want concessions from the administration that lower the federal deficit and reduce spending in exchange for their votes to raise the nation’s borrowing limit.
McCarthy said he hopes to pass it in the House next week. But the proposal stands no chance of passing the Democrat-controlled Senate.
Biden swiftly dismissed McCarthy’s proposal as a nonstarter. “That’s the MAGA economic agenda: spending cuts for working and middle class folks,” Biden said of the plan on Wednesday. “It’s not about fiscal discipline, it’s about cutting benefits for folks that they don’t seem to care much about.”
