UMF demands immediate release of minority loans to its applicants

Hyderabad: The United Muslim Federation (UMF) in the city has questioned Telangana government for sanctioning incomplete funds to the Minorities Finance Corporation for the Muslim minorities to fetch subsided loans under the state’s economic support schemes.
“Why did the government promise loans to Muslim minorities, if only 12 thousand out of the 2 lakh applicants will be getting loans under the state’s economic support scheme?”:
While more than two 2 lakh Muslims applied for the loan, the corporation reportedly said that only 50 crores out of the promised 120 crores have been sanctioned by the state government in this regard.
The federation thus held that only 12 thousand out of 2.16 lakh applicants will receive the benefit under the minority scheme.
Upset over the minorities being denied befits from the state schemes, the general secretary of the federation, Abrar Hussain Azad, held a press meeting and urged the Muslims to make a memorandum and visit their nearest corporator’s office on Friday demanding the immediate release of minority loans to all the applicants.
Officials from the federation have also directed the Muslim minorities to race out to MROs and Mandal offices and raise grievances on pending funds.

Income Tax department to release BBC Documentary of Tax evasion

After carrying out a ‘survey’ at the premises of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) offices in Delhi and Mumbai for the second day in a row today, the the income tax department on Thursday announced a BBC Documentary on its tax evasion.
“Manipulation of prices for unauthorised benefits including tax advantages are serious crimes and the BBC India is found to be a repeat offender, and this deserves a documentary” told Income Tax department to The Fauxy.
PM Narendra Modi will launch the BBC Documentary on Namo TV and Doordarshan. The documentary will also be shown on theatres and all the BJP ruled states are likely to make the documentary tax free.
Reportedly, BBC has reached UK court to ban airing of the documentary on BBC tax evasion, calling it fake, misleading and a vendetta.
Upset with the BBC for not being able to spread Modi documentary to the masses and polarise the situation ahead of general election, BJP has supported the raid. “They had just one job” said a BJP leader.
Sources suggest that Donald Trump has offered to mediate between BJP and BBC. Details awaited.

Judge orders partial release of Georgia grand jury report on possible 2020 election crimes

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis indicated last month that decisions on whether to charge any subjects of her investigation are “imminent.” Her year-long probe into whether Trump violated Georgia election law — in part by urging Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to reverse the outcome — featured extensive efforts to compel testimony form some of Trump’s top White House and campaign advisers, as well as his outside lawyers.
Dispite Willis’ preferences on timing, McBurney said he had to prioritize the public’s right to know about at least the general findings of the probe into alleged efforts to tamper with the 2020 election results.
“While publication may not be convenient for the pacing of the district attorney’s investigation, the compelling public interest in these proceedings and the unquestionable value and importance of transparency require their release,” McBurney wrote in his eight-page order.
A spokesperson for Willis did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the judge’s order and whether she will seek to appeal it.
McBurney ruled that aspects of the report that recommend whether to indict — or not indict — specific individuals should remain private for now in part because those individuals are not afforded the same due process rights during the grand jury process they would have in court if they’re charged.
While witnesses were permitted to have their lawyers nearby during the grand-jury proceedings, those lawyers were not permitted to sit in on the interviews to help mount a defense or rebut questions from prosecutors and grand jurors.
Willis’ office got court approval for the special grand jury investigation last January and impaneled the actual jury in May.
The probe stems in large part from a phone call Trump held with Raffensperger on Jan. 3, 2021, asking him to locate more than additional 11,000 votes for Trump so that he could be deemed the victor over Joe Biden in the state. Raffensperger and other state officials repeatedly told Trump they’d looked into allegations he’d made of fraud and hidden stashes ballots, but found nothing to support them.

While the Georgia officials stood firm, a recording of the call indicates Trump continued to press, largely ignoring their explanations.
But the probe significantly broadened over time to focus on Trump’s larger effort to subvert the 2020 election, in part by pushing allies in several states to deliver false sets of presidential electors to Washington. Among the witnesses Willis compelled to appear in Fulton County: Rudy Giuliani, Mike Flynn, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Mark Meadows, all of whom lost court battles to resist her summons.
Many legal analysts have said the call could amount to an illegal attempt to tamper with the election results, although Trump has described the call as “perfect.” The special grand jury also explored efforts other Trump supporters made to urge recounts or decertification of the election results in the days before Congress met to tally the electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump’s lawyers did not seek to intervene in the litigation over releasing the special grand jury’s report. The former president’s attorneys issued a statement last month saying they assumed the investigative body recommended no charges since it never subpoenaed him or sought a voluntary interview.
Trump’s attorneys did not immediately respond to a request Monday for comment on the judge’s new order.
Under Georgia law, special grand juries cannot return indictments, but their results can be used by prosecutors to take a case before a regular grand jury to seek criminal charges.

Mumbai: Makers of the upcoming pan-India mythological drama film ‘Shaakuntalam’ announced the new theatrical release date on Friday.

The Pan-India mythological romantic drama stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan in lead roles.
Earlier the film was slated to hit the theatres on February 17, 2023.
The film is based on a popular Indian play Shakuntala by Kalidasa. Shakuntala is the wife of king Dushyant and the mother of emperor Bharata. King Dushyant meets Shakuntala when he is out on a hunting trip in the jungle. They fell in love and got married as per the Gandharva system.
It will be out in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Samantha was recently seen in the sci-fi thriller film ‘Yashoda’ which received positive responses from the audience.

She will be next seen in an upcoming romantic film ‘Khusi’ opposite actor Vijay Deverakonda and in the action thriller web series ‘Citadel’ alongside Varun Dhawan.

Akbaruddin Owaisi slams Centre for failing to release funds to Telangana

Hyderabad: Extending complete support for the Telangana government’s annual budget for 2023-24, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre for failing to release the funds and to allocate projects to Telangana.
Taking part in the discussion on the annual budget in the Assembly on Wednesday, the AIMIM floor leader said the Centre was only giving 2/3 of amount to Andhra Pradesh and 1/3 of amount to Telangana from the taxes collected from the respective States and other than this, the Centre was not extending any help for the development of Telangana State.
He alleged that the union government was not honouring the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and it didn’t deliver a single promise mentioned under the Act.
Stating that the revenue was drastically declined to States after the introduction of GST, Akbaruddin Owaisi advised the Telangana BJP leaders to bring a mount pressure on the Union government for bringing funds to Telangana, instead of criticising the BRS government.
Reminding that the Centre has abolished the facility of pre-metric scholarships to Minority students, the AIMIM leader urged the State government to think over the introduction of a similar scheme in Telangana so that Minority students will continue to get a financial aid during their education.
He also asked the State government to release all the arrears related to the Minority community and students and fillup all teaching and non-teaching posts lying vacant in the Universities across the State.

Nadda to release manifesto for Tripura polls on Feb 9

New Delhi: BJP President J.P. Nadda will release the manifesto for Tripura Assembly polls on February 9.
The 60-member Tripura Assembly will go to the polls on February 16, while the counting of votes will be taken up on March 2.
According to a source, “Nadda will release the manifesto for Tripura on February 9 during his visit to the poll-bound state. After releasing the manifesto, Nadda will address a public rally.”
“Many new points have been added to the manifesto which are important for the development of the state. The Narendra Modi-led government always thinks for the development of the northeastren region. His vision is the growth of state and most importantly, the youth,” the source added.
The last BJP manifesto for Tripura included promises like job creation, AIIMS like facilities in hospitals, pay matrix of the 7th Pay Commission, hiking monthly social pension to Rs 2,000, providing houses to 3.8 lakh families, and drinking water to 53 per cent households, among others.

SC seeks collection of data in UP on convicts eligible for premature release, wants timely disposal

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed officials of legal services authorities in Uttar Pradesh to collate information from district and state prisons on convicts who have become eligible for premature release and asked the state government to “strictly abide by” its provisions in this regard.
It directed that all cases related to the premature release of prisoners shall be disposed of within three months of the prisoner becoming eligible for the relief.
Besides Uttar Pradesh, the top court also issued notices to several state governments, including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, on monitoring the premature release of convicts there.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, which was told that 2,228 convicts are entitled for remission in Uttar Pradesh, also directed the jail superintendents in UP to furnish information to the secretaries of the district legal services authority (DLSAs) to ensure that the process of premature release is implemented “in an efficient and transparent matter”.
The state government expressed apprehension that there may be certain “practical aspects” which can prevent authorities from following the directions as the decision involves a chain of officials, including the Director General-Prisons, followed by the state government and the Governor.
“There is no vacuum at the constitutional level… that’s how prescient the Constitution is. Just because one is a constitutional authority, they cannot say they are above the law,” the bench said.
It said that the state government shall “strictly abide by” the provisions contained in the policy governing the premature release of convicts and take final decisions based on them.
According to the 2018 policy of the Uttar Pradesh government, a convict serving a life term would be considered for premature release if he or she has undergone a total of 20 years of the sentence – 16 years of the actual sentence and four years of remission.

“Chairperson of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) will collate information from the district and state prisons on convicts who have become eligible as per applicable rules/policies for premature release,” the bench said.
It directed the DLSA secretaries to collate information and submit returns on May 1, August 1 and October 1 to the State Legal Services Authority.
The bench directed the chairperson of the state body to convene a meeting, also to be attended by the Secretary of the Home Department and DG Prisons, to assess the report filed by DLSA.
It directed that “all the cases for considering the premature release of prisoners shall be disposed of, no later than three months of the prisoner becoming eligible for premature release”.
“Within a month of this order DG Prisons shall in consultation with the chairperson of SLSA shall prepare an online dashboard with information of all convicts undergoing sentences of imprisonment and dates on which they are eligible for premature release,” it said.
The top court had on September 6 last year taken note of the Uttar Pradesh policy on remission which said there will be no requirement for a convict to submit an application for premature release and their cases will be considered automatically by the jail authorities.
It had asked the state government to follow the criteria laid down in its 2018 policy while considering within four months the issue of the premature release of 512 prisoners who were serving life imprisonment and had moved the apex court.
