Meta to release commercial generative AI model

San Francisco: Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly planning to release a commercial version of its artificial intelligence (AI) model in order to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s AI experiment Bard, which are racing ahead in the race to develop generative AI.

According to the Financial Times, citing sources, Meta will use a new software powered by large language models (LLMs) which can generate text, images, and code.
The tech giant released its own language model, known as LLaMA, to researchers and academics earlier this year, but the new version is said to be more widely available and customisable by companies.

According to Meta, its LLMs are “open-source,” which means that information about the new model will be made public.
The release of the new AI model is expected soon, the report said.
This is in contrast to competitors such as OpenAI, whose latest model GPT-4 is a so-called black box, meaning that the data and code used to build the model are not accessible to third parties.
“The competitive landscape of AI is going to completely change in the coming months, in the coming weeks maybe, when there will be open source platforms that are actually as good as the ones that are not,” Vice President and chief AI scientist at Meta, Yann LeCun, was quoted as saying.
Moreover, the report mentioned that Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives have hinted at a push towards creating multiple AI chatbots for individuals, advertisers and businesses across Meta platforms Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, powered by its LLMs.

Meanwhile, tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched a new AI company called xAI that aims to “understand the true nature of the universe”.
The team is headed up by Musk and includes team members that have worked at other big names in AI, including OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Google’s DeepMind.

Ahead of the film’s release, the actress brought a four BHK in Gurgaon, Delhi for herself and her family where she plans to spend time whenever she gets a chance away from her tight schedule. Sanya comes from Delhi and she started the promotion of her upcoming ‘Kathal’ from her hometown. The actor will be seen in the role of police officer for the first time in ‘Kathal’.
In the trailer, we can see a comedy drama revolving around a female police officer (Sanya) and her journey of unfolding the mystery of 2 jackfruits being stolen from the garden of a MLA played by actor Vijay Raaz. The movie also features Rajpal Yadav in the role of a journalist.

Co-writer and director Yashowardhan Mishra commented on the film, “It is such a thrilling experience to be launching the trailer of my first film, Kathal- A Jackfruit Mystery. Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, on Saturday, gave a hilarious reply to a social media user who asked him to release ‘Jawan’ tomorrow.
Shah Rukh organised an #AskSRK session on Twitter to engage with his fans directly. During the interaction, one user asked, “Bhai, 100-200 zyda Lelo par #jawaan movie kal hi release kar do.”
Replying to this SRK, who is known for his witty and hilarious responses, said, “Bhai itne mein toh OTT ka subscription nahi milta tujhe poori picture chahiye!! #Jawan”

On Saturday, SRK announced the new release date of his next action thriller film ‘Jawan’.
The film will now hit the theatres on September 7, 2023.
Helmed by Atlee, the film was earlier slated to hit the theatres on June 2 this year but the makers have now decided to shift the official release date.
The film is billed as an event film with high-octane action sequences. Shah Rukh’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment has produced it.
In June 2022, SRK unveiled the film’s teaser which opened with a glimpse of the Northern Lights over mountain tops. We then saw Shah Rukh with his face in the dark, wrapping bandages on his face as the film’s theme played in the background.

The film also stars south actors Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in pivotal roles.
Apart from this, SRK will also be seen in director Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming film ‘Dunki’ opposite actor Taapsee Pannu. The official release date of the film is still awaited.

AGMUT cadre IAS officers’ body expresses anguish over release of ex-MP Anand Mohan

New Delhi: A group representing AGMUT cadre civil services officers has expressed “deep concern and anguish” over the release of former MP Anand Mohan, convicted for killing an IAS officer, following a change in the Bihar government’s prison manual.
This tantamounts to a “denial of justice” to G Krishnaiah, who was Gopalganj district magistrate in 1994, and his family, the association said in a statement issued on May 4.
Mohan was released by amending the classification rules of prisoners, the AGMUT Cadre IAS Officers’ Association said in a statement.

The association represents IAS officers serving in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre.
“The association expresses solidarity with the Indian Civil and Administrative Service (Central) Association in demanding justice to the family of Late G Krishnaiah, IAS. The association stands firmly by the family of the deceased officer in its fight for justice,” it said.
In a statement earlier, the Indian Civil and Administrative Service (Central) Association said Mohan’s release is “tantamount to denial of justice” and urged the Bihar government to reconsider its decision.
Krishnaiah was lynched by a mob led by Mohan in 1994. His wife Uma Krishnaiah has challenged the former Bihar MP’s premature release in the Supreme Court.
Mohan was released from Saharsa jail last month following an amendment in Bihar’s prison rules. His name figured in a list of more than 20 prisoners who were ordered to be set free by a notification issued by the Bihar government’s Law department as they had spent more than 14 years behind bars.

Uma Krishnaiah has contended that the sentence of life imprisonment awarded to Mohan meant incarceration for his entire natural course of life and that it cannot be mechanically interpreted to last just 14 years.
Mohan was convicted for the murder of Krishnaiah, a Dalit IAS officer. According to reports, Krishnaiah died after his car was attacked during the funeral procession of gangster Chotan Shukla.
The former MP was part of the procession in Muzaffarpur and the police had charge-sheeted him for provoking his supporters to commit the crime.

Ranbir Kapoor, SRK to think about release dates of Jawan, Animal

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor who has given two consecutive superhit films- Brahamastra and TJMM in the worst phase of Bollywood is on the best stage of his career currently. The actor was spotted at T-series office last evening as he will be next seen in the production house’s ‘Animal’ which is set to release on August 11. Rumours mills suggest that the Rockstar actor has met SRK regarding the latter’s upcoming film Jawan’s release date.
The meeting happened after it was reported that Jawan release date has been postponed and it might release on August 11 too. A few reports claim that two big actors of Bollywood have met in this regard in T-series office while other reports quoting sources claim that calls have been made to Shah Rukh Khan to delay ‘Jawan’ by a few weeks by T Series production officials and Ranbir Kapoor.
A report quoting source says, “Perhaps, yesterday Ranbir also spoke to Shah Rukh regarding this. “Time and again, it has been proven in the past ten years that a clash of big films should be avoided as they eat into each other’s business. If ‘Jawan’ is delayed, it would be a magnanimous move by SRK.”

“Ranbir would obviously be happy. And if a decision of such kind has been taken, Ranbir must have already extended his vote of thanks to SRK. Theatres would love both the films to run well. Actually, both movies are believed to have been made well with very interesting plots,” the source concludes.
‘Jawan’ has Nayanthara opposite Shah Rukh and is produced by Gauri Khan and directed by Atlee.
Animal has Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Parineeti Chopra and Prem Chopra in lead roles. The movie is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster ‘Pathaan’ will now become the first Hindi film to release in Bangladesh post 1971. It is set to release on May 12 in Bangladesh.

What’s Really Behind the Release of Tucker Carlson’s Texts

The point of this inquiry isn’t to provide Carlson any relief — he deserves all the scrutiny his firing has brought him — but to examine the motives of the unnamed sources who have risen against him in recent days. Why have so many powerful actors chosen this moment to slag Carlson, when none of the behaviors described clash with the way he’s carried on for years? One possibility is that people who are working for Fox have assembled a PR campaign to discredit the network’s former star that will throw the press pack off doing additional coverage on the Dominion case. It’s like a fighter jet releasing a flare to fool an enemy’s heat-seeking missile. Why theorize in this direction? Because the story that’s currently being put out there just doesn’t add up.
According to the Times and the Post, the Fox board got spooked when it saw the unredacted message (Exhibit 276 from the case) in which Carlson texted about his reaction to the beating of a purported Antifa member. Writes the Times, “The text alarmed the Fox board, which saw the message a day before Fox was set to defend itself against Dominion Voting Systems before a jury. The board grew concerned that the message could become public at trial when Mr. Carlson was on the stand, creating a sensational and damaging moment that would raise broader questions about the company.”
Why should this text message “alarm” the Fox board, which includes Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch, William A. Burck, Chase Carey, Anne Dias, Roland A. Hernandez, Jacques Nasser and Paul Ryan, when Carlson routinely said much more inflammatory things on his program? Perhaps the board has never tuned in to hear Carlson’s gems about the “great replacement theory” or about immigrants making the country “poorer, and dirtier and more divided” or know about his blatant white nationalist sentiments or viewed the episode in which he argued the January 6 Capitol riot was a largely peaceful demonstration. Perhaps board members missed these salient facts about Carlson because they don’t even own televisions. This might explain why their hair turned white when they read what was, by Carlson standards, a fairly anodyne text. But who wants to give the board this sort of slack?
You can believe the board was troubled by the Carlson text, and you can believe that Fox might have fretted about the board-ordered investigation of Carlson that the Times reports, without taking the leap that the board was intervening at this late date to limit Fox’s exposure in the Dominion case. As the Times piece itself reported, “It was not guaranteed that the text would have been revealed in open court.” That sounds right. As juicy as Exhibit 276 might be, it doesn’t have any immediate relevance to the Dominion case, so why would Dominion lawyers, who assembled a wealth of damning stuff pertinent to their case, wander off the fairway into the rough with the Carlson comment?
Additionally, even though Carlson permitted stolen-election claims to be aired on his show, he was not the worst offender at Fox. Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro broadcast more of the claims, something Fox mogul Rupert Murdoch admitted. It’s not apparent at all that Carlson was the prime focus of Fox’s legal worries in the Dominion case. (Though he faced specific exposure in a separate workplace harassment case filed by a woman who had formerly worked on his show.) So can we really believe that his firing was connected to the Dominion case when Fox hosts like Pirro and Bartiromo still work for the network?
No evidence exists that proves the extended coverage of Carlson is designed to move the discussion off of Fox and onto its erstwhile anchor. But the steady flow of leaked material — including the Times and Post stories as well as a series of embarrassing off-air recordings uncovered by the activist site Media Matters for America — point to the possibility of an after-the-firing campaign to make Carlson the personification of the network’s rot when the infection goes much deeper.
People connected to the Fox case might be leaking information on Carlson to burn him before he burns them. If that’s true, they should beware. As Ben Smith wrote in his Times column in June 2021, Carlson has been a good source for political reporters in the past. “It’s so unknown in the general public how much he plays both sides,” one unnamed reporter for a prominent publication told Smith.
Dominion vs. Fox may have been settled, but Fox vs. Carlson will rage on.

Houthis release Yemeni military commander after 8 years

Sanaa: Yemen’s Houthi rebels have released a government military commander who had been detained for eight years, a Houthi official announced in a statement.
Faisal Rajab, a commander in the Yemeni government army, was released on Sunday after a request was made by a tribal delegation from his hometown in the southern province of Abyan.
Abdulkadir al-Murtada, head of the Houthi prisoner affairs’ committee, confirmed Rajab’s release in a statement during a press conference held in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

“With the release of the prisoner, Major General Faisal Rajab, we confirm our readiness for a (future) comprehensive prisoner swap,” al-Murtada said, urging the UN to “expedite the implementation of the prisoner exchange deal that was agreed upon in Switzerland”.

Rajab was seen being handed over to the tribal delegation during the press conference.
While welcoming Rajab’s release, Majid Fadail, the spokesman for the government negotiating delegation, tweeted that Rajab was originally supposed to be released as part of the UN-brokered prisoner swap deal implemented in mid-April, but that the Houthis insisted on delaying his release without giving any reason.
Rajab was captured in March 2015 after the Houthi rebels stormed the al-Anad Air Base in the southern province of Lahij. His name appeared on a list of around 900 prisoners who were freed in a three-day prisoner exchange in mid-April.
Yemen’s warring sides have expressed readiness for the next round of talks to end the war in the Arab state, which has been going on since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia took control of several northern cities. Tens of thousands of people died in the war, which has pushed Yemen to the brink of famine.

Recent peace efforts, particularly China-brokered talks that helped restore diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, have increased hope for a resolution to the Yemeni conflict.

Karnataka assembly polls: JP Nadda to release BJP election manifesto today

Bengaluru: Ahead of the Karnataka elections slated to be held on May 10, the Bharatiya Janta Party is expected to release its election manifesto today, as per sources.
The manifesto will be released by party president JP Nadda in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and party veteran BS Yediyurappa.
Sources said the party manifesto may focus on welfare measures for the youth, infrastructure development and women empowerment.

Further, to take the first-time voters on board, a special announcement can be made for the youth and girl students who have passed class 12.
In the 2018 election manifesto, BJP touched every section of society. The party had also included cow protection measures in its manifesto.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing an election rally in Kolar on Sunday, came down heavily on Congress for drawing parallels between him and a snake.
PM Modi said that the people of Karnataka will give the party a “befitting answer” in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in an election rally in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi on Thursday, said, “PM Modi is like a ‘poisonous snake’, you might think it’s poison or not. If you lick it, you are dead.”

Lashing out at Congress over the remark, PM Modi said, “Today when I am fighting against corruption, Congress is disturbed the most. Congress is now threatening. They say ‘Modi teri kabra khudegi’. Congress’ topic in Karnataka elections is snake’s poison. They are comparing me with a snake and seeking votes from people. For me, the people of the country are a form of Lord Shiva. I accept being the snake on the neck of the god-like public. The people of Karnataka will give them a befitting answer on May 10.”
PM Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress terming the party as an “outdated engine”.
“Congress is an ‘outdated engine’. Development halted due to them. Congress has a bundle of fake guarantees. They don’t fulfil any promise made to the public. ‘Unfulfilled guarantees’ are their record. They betrayed the public, but BJP fulfilled all the guarantees by doing several development works,” PM Modi said.
Notably, Congress has promised a number of guarantees to the people of Karnataka ahead of the state Assembly polls slated on May 10, including 200 units of free electricity.
The Prime Minister has hit the ground to campaign for the BJP in the last leg of the campaigning, in which he is conducting a number of poll rallies and roadshows to turn the tide in favour of the party, in what is expected to be a tripartite contest among BJP, Congress and JDS.
Assembly elections will be held in Karnataka on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Wife of slain IAS officer moves SC against Anand Mohan’s release

New Delhi: The wife of IAS officer G. Krishnaiah, who was lynched in 1994 by a mob led by former Bihar MP Anand Mohan Singh, has moved the Supreme Court against the latter’s premature release from prison.
The plea filed by Uma Krishnaiah, the wife of G. Krishnaiah, contended that life imprisonment awarded as a substitute for death penalty has to be carried out strictly as directed by the court, and it would be beyond application of remission.
The plea submitted that life imprisonment handed down to the gangster-turned-politician meant incarceration for his entire natural course of life.

Anand Mohan was released from the Saharsa jail on Thursday morning following an amendment in Bihar’s prison rules.
Under fire over the release of Anand Mohan, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had claimed during an event on Friday evening that the decision was based on the Centre’s ‘Model Prison Manual 2016’.
While referring to a book he carried with him, Nitish Kumar said: “This is a book on Model Prison Manual 2016. Please go through it and tell me whether any provision says that if an IAS officer gets killed, the convict will have to stay in jail for his entire life?”
“There is no such law in any state of the country. Hence, we have removed it in Bihar. He (Anand Mohan) was serving a jail term for more than 15 years. In depth discussions preceded the decision. Since 2017, 22 meetings of remission (‘parihar’) have taken place in Bihar and 696 prisoners have been released. A number of inmates were released on my recommendation on Republic Day, Independence Day and birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi,” he added.
He also asked if there is any difference in law required for common people and a government official.

“Though 27 inmates have been released, why is it that only one person’s release is being opposed,” he asked.
In 1994, Krishnaiah, then District Magistrate of Gopalganj, who hailed from Telangana, was beaten to death by a mob when his vehicle tried to overtake the funeral procession of gangster Chhotan Shukla. The mob was reportedly intigated by Anand Mohan.
