Biden steps up pressure on Fed to toughen rules for regional banks

    [ad_1]

A White House official told reporters that they believe all the steps they’re pointing to can be accomplished under existing law. Given that the banking agencies — the Fed, the FDIC and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency — are structured to act independently of the president, however, the administration can only apply political pressure.

“A lot of these regulators were nominated by this president in part because they share his view of the kind of bank regulation we want to see,” the official said. “We’re hopeful that they take these steps,” but they have the flexibility to apply the rules as they see fit.

The campaign for tougher rules demonstrates how quickly the political climate for larger banks has shifted since the stunning demise of SVB and fellow regional lender Signature Bank. The change is all the more striking because just a few years ago regional lenders secured bipartisan support for the law that lightened their oversight in comparison to megabanks like Goldman Sachs or Bank of America.

Scrutiny on the banking sector could also blunt efforts by those global giants to head off even tougher rules that the Fed was already contemplating before SVB’s demise.

The Bank Policy Institute, which represents both megabanks and large regional firms, hit back.

“It would be unfortunate if the response to bad management and delinquent supervision at SVB were additional regulation on all banks that would impose meaningful costs on the U.S. economy going forward,” BPI President Greg Baer said in a statement. “This has a strong feeling of ready, fire, aim.”

The White House announcement comes just weeks after former Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard joined the administration as Biden’s top economic policy adviser. She served as the lone Democrat on the Fed’s board during much of the Trump era and dissented against most of the regulatory overhaul that happened during that time.

Among the changes advocated by the White House: making regional banks subject to stress testing annually, under which the government requires them to game out how they might fare under severe economic scenarios.

They also urged the FDIC to shield community banks from bearing the costs of replenishing the deposit insurance fund after the failure of SVB and Signature Bank, something Chair Martin Gruenberg signaled he was open to in hearings this week.

Regulators and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen agreed to back uninsured depositors at both failed firms, fearing runs at other similar institutions — moves expected to cost the FDIC nearly $23 billion.

“Community banks play a really important role in a lot of communities, we think it’s important to preserve that model,” the White House official said. “They were not to blame for the actions that resulted in the interventions.”

That, coupled with statements by Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr that he doesn’t intend to raise loss-absorbing capital requirements for small banks indicates that they may be shielded from the bulk of the blowback.

Both Gruenberg and Barr were grilled by lawmakers at hourslong hearings this week in both the House and the Senate, where they indicated that tougher rules for regional banks are in store.

Barr, who was nominated by Biden and confirmed last July, is conducting a review of what went wrong in the Fed’s oversight of SVB, with a report expected by May 1 that will recommend regulatory and supervisory actions.

In its fact sheet, the White House also backed early moves by regulators toward requiring large regional banks to hold long-term debt that could be “bailed in” as equity in case of failure.

  • FSSAI allows labelling curd in regional names amid political controversy

FSSAI allows labelling curd in regional names amid political controversy

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Food safety regulator FSSAI on Thursday revised its order and allowed the use of regional names in printed labels of curd packets amid political controversy in Tamil Nadu.

Food Business Operators (FBOs) are now allowed to use the term ‘curd’ along with any other prevalent regional common name in brackets on the label. For example, ‘Curd (Dahi)’ or ‘Curd (Mosaru), ‘Curd (Zaamutdaud)’, ‘Curd (Thayir)’, ‘Curd (Perugu)’ can be used, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said in a statement.

The order has been revised following various representations received recently on the omission of the term ‘curd’ from the Standards of Fermented Milk Products and only the word ‘Dahi’ was mentioned.

The controversy erupted after the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation — which sells dairy products in brand name Aavin — declined to use the Hindi term ‘Dahi’ in its printed sachets as directed by FSSAI and said that it would only stick to the Tamil word ‘Thayir‘.

On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin decried the move as an attempt to “impose Hindi”. Dairy Development Minister SM Nasar said the government had received a letter asking it to implement the directive before August.

“The unabashed insistence of #HindiImposition have come to the extent of directing us to label even a curd packet in Hindi, relegating Tamil & Kannada in our own states. Such brazen disregard to our mother tongues will make sure those responsible are banished from South forever,” Stalin said in a tweet.

BJP state unit chief K Annamalai has said the notification was not in tandem with the Centre’s policy of promoting regional languages.

Hyderabad: ‘Suspend West Zone regional transport officer’, demand auto drivers JAC

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee (TADJAC) has demanded that the government suspend RTO Hyderabad West Zone CP Venkateshwar Rao, for his corrupt activities and also to put up “We don’t take bribes” boards at every government office, including RTA, police stations, GHMC offices.

TADJAC convenor Mohammad Amanullah Khan alleged that CP Venkateshwar Rao has been entertaining all RTA transactions of goods vehicles without insisting on valid insurance certificates.

However, he has allegedly been harassing auto drivers and owners if they directly approach him for RTA works including the renewal of permits, transfer of vehicles, and replacement of old autos with new autos among other works and, in case, do not pay him bribes.

“We complained against the RTO to the superior officers with specific complaints, but the Transport department is yet to take action against his open corrupt practices,” stated Amanullah Khan.

He said that the RTA offices are computerized so that RTA works are done quickly and in time.

However, he the official allegedly defeats the purpose of computerization by intentionally causing work delays for days together, amid a lack of accountability.

“We demand that the government servants like CP Venakteshwar Rao, responsible for work delays, should be held accountable and penalties should be imposed on them. The amount should be collected from their salaries, if they failed to complete transactions within the stipulated period,” added Amanullah.

He threatened a dharna by auto drivers and owners at the RTA Office Hyderabad Zone Office if immediate action is not taken.

Thakur Jaisingh, Shaik Raheem, Mohd Jafer, SBK Zama and other leaders of the JAC participated in the press meet.

  • Regional parties to play key role in defeating BJP in 2024: Akhilesh Yadav

Regional parties to play key role in defeating BJP in 2024: Akhilesh Yadav

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Exuding confidence that an opposition alliance would take shape in the days to come, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said regional parties would play a key role in putting up a fight against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

However, on the role of the Congress in this proposed opposition front, Yadav said it is for the grand old party to decide.

“Efforts are on to forge an opposition alliance or front. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao are making efforts (on their own). I am confident that in the days to come, an opposition alliance will take shape, which will fight against the BJP,” he told PTI Video in an interview.

To a question whether he is putting the Congress and the BJP on the same pedestal, the SP chief said it is the regional parties in various states which are fighting the saffron camp.

“In many states, the Congress doesn’t exist in comparison to the BJP, but regional parties are fighting tooth and nail against the saffron camp on the ground, and I am hopeful that they will succeed,” he said.

When told that regional parties such as the JD (U), RJD and the DMK are keen on having the Congress in the opposition alliance, Yadav said they are already in a coalition with the grand old party.

“It is a question of a big fight, and the Congress itself will decide its role in this fight,” he said.

Asked who would be the face of the opposition camp in the next Lok Sabha elections, Yadav said it would be decided after the polls and is “not a pertinent question” right now.

“You are talking about face. What about the (BJP’s) face in 2014 and 2019, who made false promises to win the election?” he said without naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

None of the promises made by the BJP in 2014 and 2019 was fulfilled, the SP chief claimed.

When asked whether his party would contest in the Raebareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in UP considered pocket boroughs of the Congress, Yadav alleged that SP workers are being killed in Amethi.

“In Amethi, our cadres are being killed. The Samajwadi Party workers are questioning who will fight for them. It is the Samajwadi workers there who are supporting each other; the Congress workers are not coming out in our support,” he said.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is the MP of Raebareli while her son and former party president Rahul Gandhi was defeated by Union minister Smriti Irani from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Yadav said the Samajwadi Party would leave no stone unturned to stop the juggernaut of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh in the next Lok Sabha polls.

“If the BJP wants to come to power in 2024, it has to win in UP. We will ensure that the BJP is defeated in UP and also in the country. In Uttar Pradesh, we will fight with our existing allies,” he said.

The SP and the Congress had joined hands in the 2017 assembly polls in UP but lost to the BJP. In the Lok Sabha polls held two years later, the grand old party was kept out of the SP-BSP alliance in the state.

Speaking on the Adani issue, the SP chief slammed the Centre for allegedly allowing the loot of the country’s assets and public money.

He asked, “Why no question is being asked about the so-called number two (richest man)? Why is there no accountability on public money in LIC and SBI which is getting lost?”

The Hindenburg report that alleged accounting fraud and stock manipulation at the Adani group, came just as a Rs 20,000 crore follow-on share sale of the conglomerate’s flagship firm Adani Enterprises opened in January.

  • House Dems tap Hoyer to lead new regional council

House Dems tap Hoyer to lead new regional council

    [ad_1]

And the regional group’s goals, which are focused on giving Democratic lawmakers a say in the implementation and rollout of last Congress’ major legislative achievements — from the bipartisan infrastructure bill to the party-line Inflation Reduction Act — Hoyer’s new role will also keep him in close contact with the White House. Jeffries has discussed his new regional strategy with President Joe Biden, and he said in a statement to POLITICO that the council “will guide our partnership with the Biden administration.”

Hoyer said in an interview Monday that he’s already begun working with Mitch Landrieu, the Biden administration official overseeing the implementation of the infrastructure bill, as well as Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo: “Leader Jeffries wants to make sure that the American people got the best results possible from the legislation that was passed and that they know what has been done for their regions.”

Work is already underway in Hoyer’s home state. He’s slated to join Biden in Baltimore for a Monday event on a major infrastructure project that promises to loosen a critical northeastern rail chokepoint — exactly the type of messaging moment that Democrats hope to host across the country as the infrastructure bill’s hundreds of billions of dollars in spending gush into districts.

The regional group’s focus on the previous Congress is no accident: Democrats know they face a challenge heading into 2024, with the Republican-controlled House planning to hand no easy victories to Biden’s party. Democrats will, as a result, need to campaign on wins they’ve already secured — which explains their plans for reinvigorated messaging around what they’ve delivered.

The group is “very focused on making sure that every region of the country — not just some — but every region of the country is advantaged and we meet their needs so that we can grow their jobs, grow their wealth, grow their wages,” Hoyer said Monday.

Hoyer said the group “may well be” a more permanent part of the House Democratic Caucus’ organization in future Congresses but emphasized that it’s just getting started.

According to an early roster, the members of the new Regional Leadership Council in addition to Hoyer will be Democratic Reps. Tony Cárdenas (Calif.), Jared Huffman (Calif.), Angie Craig (Minn.), Robin Kelly (Ill.), Derek Kilmer (Wash.), Lizzie Fletcher (Texas), Troy Carter (La.), Darren Soto (Fla.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (Del.), Madeleine Dean (Pa.), Grace Meng (N.Y.) and Lori Trahan (Mass.).

The group has plans to meet all together by mid-February, Hoyer said.

CJI Chandrachud’s pitch for making SC judgments available in regional languages laudatory: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s emphasis on making Supreme Court judgments available in regional languages.

“At a recent function, the Hon’ble CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. He also suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters,” Modi wrote on Twitter and shared on the site the relevant clip of the CJI’s speech delivered at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in Mumbai.

The prime minister has in the past often pitched for making judicial verdicts more accessible to the common man by making those available in regional languages.

“India has several languages, which add to our cultural vibrancy. The central government is undertaking numerous efforts to encourage Indian languages including giving the option of studying subjects like engineering and medicine in one’s Matru Bhasha (mother tongue),” Modi said in another tweet.

  • Latitude: A Celebration Of Regional Diversity Through Architecture

Latitude: A Celebration Of Regional Diversity Through Architecture

    [ad_1]

The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) is the National body of Architects in the country. Established in 1917, the institute today has more than 25,000 members and plays a major role in promoting the profession of architecture by organizing and uniting the Architects of India to promote aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession both in Practice and in Education.

In light of the fact that the construction sector contributes 36% of carbon dioxide emissions, an optimistic outlook would be to build more judiciously and mindfully keeping the environment and nature at its core, thereby minimizing this damage.

A significant step towards this cause is the event – ‘Latitude’ – the IIA Southern Regional Conference 2022, which is bringing together architects, academicians, and students from all over India to meet, deliberate, and learn from each other’s best practices and collectively address these issues which are both global & regional.

The Southern Regional Conference (SRC) 2022 is a two-day premier event showcasing acclaimed international and national (southern regional) architects. The SRC is a curated confluence of architects and their expressions across latitudes. The IIA SRC 2022 offers an opportunity for architects to Explore, Express, and Experience regionalism and cherish and celebrate regional diversity in a globalized world.

The key speakers for the event are :- (a)Elisabeth Belpaire, Belgium, (b) Farid Esmaeil, X Architects, Dubai, UAE, (c)Gouthama, Mud Hands, Bengaluru, India, (d) Henri Comrie, URBA, South Africa, (e) Javier Munoz Menendez, Munoz Arquitectos Asociados, Mexico, (f)Krishnan Varma, Meister Varma Architects, Kerala, India (g) Neelam Manjunath, Manasaram Architects, Bengaluru, India, (h) Pavithra Sriram, Design Co:Lab, Chennai, India, (i) Peter Rich, Peter Rich Architects, South Africa, (j)Richard Witt, BDP Quadrangle, Toronto, (k) Sandeep Mukherjee, Quercuspace, Bengaluru, India, (l) Dr. Srinivas Daketi, SPA, Vijayawada, India, (m) Sudhir Reddy, Kruthica, Hyderabad, India, (n) Waro Kishi, K. The SRC 2022 will feature seven highly acclaimed international architects and seven reputed Indian architects and designers. These invited speakers have been deliberately chosen from a wide range of latitudes across the globe and will expound their ideas about architecture and design based on their location and cultural heritage.

In addition to these speaker presentations and panel discussions, the learnings during the conference will be extended to the workshop on Bamboo Construction by Ar. Neelam Manjunath and workshop on paper engineering by Arun Desai. Books with a wealth of knowledge and experience will be launched to facilitate knowledge dissemination to the gathered Architecture fraternity. Four eminent architects – Peter Rich, Neelam Manjunath, JK Gupta, and Appanna Deshpande will launch their books during this conference.

Awards to the built works by architects and student thesis awards will also be conferred along with Lifetime Achievement Awards where the contributions to the architecture domain will be recognized and honored.
