Revanth Reddy, other Congress leaders placed under house arrest

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress president A. Revanth Reddy and other party leaders were placed under house arrest on Friday to prevent them from joining a protest at Osmania University over Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exams question paper leak.

Revanth Reddy was detained at his house in Jubilee Hills ahead of Vidyarthi Nirudyoga Maha Nirasana Deeksha or protest by students and unemployed at Arts College on Osmania University campus. Large number of police personnel were deployed outside his residence and barricades were erected to prevent him from leaving his residence.

The protest was planned by the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee. Police, however, denied permission for the same.

Police have also placed under house arrest other Congress leaders like Mallu Ravi, Addanki Dayakar and leaders of JAC.

Revanth Reddy took to Twitter to condemn the house arrest. He said instead of sending police to house arrest him, Chief Minister KCR and minister KTR should come forward for a debate on the question paper leak in the presence of Osmania University students.

Revanth Reddy, who is also a Member of Parliament, said: “If CM KCR and KTR have no role in paper leak, they should accept his challenge.”

TPCC spokesman Addanki Dayakar condemned the police action. He alleged that the BRS government was trying to muzzle the voice of opposition. He slammed the government for placing Congress leaders under house arrest for a second consecutive day.

Several Congress leaders were kept under house arrest on Thursday to prevent them from joining Revanth Reddy during the latter’s appearance before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is probing the TSPSC paper leak case.

The SIT had summoned Revanth Reddy to provide evidence in support of certain allegations made by him in the paper leak case.

Take action against those responsible for fire accidents: Kishan Reddy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union minister for tourism and culture G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday alleged that the Telangana government is not taking action against owners of buildings whose negligence is leading to a series of fire accidents.

He visited Swapnalok Complex in Secunderabad, where a huge fire on Thursday night claimed six lives.

The minister spoke to officials and enquired about the cause of the fire.

Kishan Reddy, who is a member of Lok Sabha from Secunderabad, told media persons that the state government is regularising unauthorised buildings for revenue. He alleged that the government is encouraging illegal constructions so that it can earn more revenue.

The Union minister termed the fire accident in the building unfortunate. He said that though poor and innocents were losing lives in fire accidents, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and state government were not taking action against those responsible for the accidents.

“Whenever a fire accident takes place, they say we will take action but later forget it,” said Kishan Reddy.

He said negligence by the owners of buildings was resulting in tragedies. Many commercial establishments lack fire safety equipment or not complying with fire safety guidelines.

Kishan Reddy asked all enterprises to do regular inspections of fire safety compliances and audits and rectify any defects to avoid accidents.

Six youths including four women were killed and few others injured in a huge fire that broke out at Swapnalok Complex on Thursday night.

This was the second major fire accident in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad, in less than two months.

Three persons were killed in a huge fire at a multi-storey commercial complex on January 28. The building was completely gutted in the fire and it was later demolished by the authorities as the structure had become weak.

ED summons YSRC MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy in Delhi excise case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday issued a summon to Ongole YSR Congress (YSRC) MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, to appear before them on March 18, in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam.

There are possibilities that ED might be confronting Sreenivasulu Reddy with Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramachandra Pillai arrested for money laundering in the excise case. The MP’s son, Magunta Raghava Reddy, was earlier arrested in the scam.

The ED has claimed in the supplementary charge sheet that Vijay Nair, on behalf of leaders of AAP received kickbacks to the tune of Rs 100 crore from South Group, whose prominent persons are Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, Raghav Magunta, Sarath Reddy and K Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

The ED had arrested Punjab-based businessman Gautam Malhotra and one Rajesh Joshi, an aide of Vijay Nair. It was alleged that Joshi got money from Nair for Goa election. This money was proceeds of crime generated through Excise policy scam. Their interrogation led to the arrest of Magunta Raghava Reddy.

Now, the ED is further probing the matter.

  • Setback to Kadapa MP in Vivekananda Reddy murder case

Setback to Kadapa MP in Vivekananda Reddy murder case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a setback to Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy, the Telangana High Court on Friday dismissed his petition seeking direction to the CBI not to take any coercive action against him in the murder case of his uncle and former Andhra Pradesh minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy.

Refusing to stay further proceedings against him in the case, the court ruled that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may continue its investigation into the case. It, however, asked the agency to video and audio record questioning of Avinash Reddy, who is a cousin of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Justice K. Lakshman, who had reserved the order on Monday, pronounced the same on Friday.

The judge also rejected the plea of the MP to allow his lawyer to be present during the questioning. He, however, asked the CBI to allow the lawyer to a point where he can’t see Avinash Reddy.

Avinash had claimed in his writ petition that the CBI is being unfair in its investigation of the murder. He claimed that the CBI was attempting to portray him as the primary conspirator in the murder. He also accused the CBI of not following protocol during questioning. As a result, he filed interim motions exhorting the court to order the CBI not to arrest him in the aforementioned matter.

The MP’s counsel stated that the CBI was not looking into the involvement of N. Rajasekhar Reddy, son-in-law of Vivekananda Reddy and his second wife Shamim. He informed the court that YS Viveka had married Shamim for the second time in 2010. They gave birth to a boy. Viveka’s family was divided as a result of his second marriage. Financial transactions have also resulted in disagreements, the court was told.

Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy had also impleaded in the case. Her counsel had submitted that the allegations made by Avinash Reddy against the CBI and her were baseless as he was only trying to divert the case from the main issue. She alleged that Avinash Reddy was the main conspirator in the murder.

Vivekananda Reddy, younger brother of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was found murdered mysteriously at his residence at Pulivendula in Kadapa district on March 15, 2019, a month ahead of 2019 general elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him. He was killed hours before he was to launch YSR Congress Party’s election campaign in Kadapa.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

In November last year, the Supreme Court transferred to a CBI court in Hyderabad the trial and probe into the larger conspiracy behind the murder. The apex court observed that doubts raised by Sunitha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Avinash Reddy appeared before the CBI for the fourth time on March 14. He was questioned by the agency on January 28, February 24 and March 10.

Sangeet Natak Akademi in Hyderabad: Kishan Reddy writes to KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has written a letter to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao requesting him to identify and allot suitable land of 10 acres in the heart of Hyderabad city for setting up a Regional Centre of Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA).

Reddy in his letter, on March 9, said that the SNA which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture would develop this into a “state-of-the-art Regional centre and a leading cultural space that would foster the cultural growth and performative milieu of the state.”

The letter also said that the availability of infrastructure such as pre-existing structures and buildings will expedite the Ministry of Culture and SNA’s efforts in commencing the Centre at the earliest.

The Union Minister in his letter stated, “The Sangeet Natak Akademi currently has no presence in Telangana or Andhra and the centre is envisaged for the promotion of research and documentation of music, folk and tribal arts, theatre and puppetry as all other regional centres of SNA cater to dance forms.”

Infrastructural requirements of the centre would include a library, documentation centre and an auditorium for performing art including multifunctional space beside the office space, the letter reads.

The Minister reminded the CM of Telangana’s rich and diverse intangible cultural heritage that includes dance forms such as Perini Sivatandavam that have been patronised by the Kakatiya dynasty and traditional forms of story-telling such as Golla Suddulu, Oggu Kathalu, Gotralu and Chindu Bhagavatam.

“Telangana’s large tribal population also give us the opportunity to showcase unique dance forms such as Gusadi, Lambadi, Mayuri and Dhimsa. Apart from this, Telangana is also a bridge between northern and southern India as a home to several elements of syncretic Intangible Cultural Heritage”, the Union Minister added.

Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture and an apex body in the field of performing arts in the country has the mandate to preserve and promote India’s vast Intangible Cultural Heritage of diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi now has two constituent units, the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) at Imphal, and Kathak Kendra in Delhi. Besides the constituent units, the Akademi presently has five centres: Kutiyattam Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram for preserving and promoting the age-old Sanskrit theatre of Kerala, Sattriya Kendra, Guwahati for promoting the Sattriya traditions of Assam.

North-East Centre, Guwahati for preserving the traditional and folk performing art traditions of north-eastern India. North-East Documentation Centre, Agartala for festival and field documentation in the northeast. Chhau Kendra, Chandankiyari for promoting the Chhau Dances of eastern India.

AP: Congress strongman Kiran Kuman Reddy resigns, likely to join BJP

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Congress suffered a setback as former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned from the party on Saturday.

He submitted his resignation letter to the president of the Indian National Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, on March 11.

The four-time MLA from Chittoor district is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reports suggest.

Reddy’s association with the Congress party has been on and off since the state’s bifurcation in 2014. He was the last chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and was strongly against the division.

When the UPA government decided to divide AP, Reddy resigned as the chief minister and quit the party to float his own called the Jai Samaikyandhra Party.

However, the party neither gained momentum nor acceptance from the public, following which Reddy returned to Congress in 2018. However, he alleged that he was repeatedly sidelined by the party when asked for a better position. He even paid a visit to Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi for the same.

He was inactive during the 2019 General Elections and did not participate in the recently concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra.
