Klopp insists Spurs will recover from Newcastle thrashing to face Liverpool

    [ad_1]

Jürgen Klopp says that he thought his TV was broken when he saw Tottenham were 5-0 down after 21 minutes at Newcastle but claims the humiliation will not be on Spurs’ minds at Anfield.

Liverpool boast a formidable home record against Spurs, who have won only once in the league at Anfield since 1993, and would leapfrog Ryan Mason’s side with a fourth successive Premier League win on Sunday. Spurs’ poor record plus the scars from St James’ Park in their most recent away fixture could leave them more vulnerable than usual but Klopp does not expect a hangover from the 6-1 rout.

The Liverpool manager said: “The Newcastle v Tottenham game I came home, switched the TV on and it was 1-0. I had something else to do and wanted to watch the game a bit later, and when I came back in it was 5-0. I honestly thought there was something wrong with the screen, somebody had made a joke or something. Newcastle obviously is in very good moment so these kind of things can happen.

“I never could think in my life like that [about Spurs being scarred at Anfield]. To find for yourself the right attitude in the game you have [to] think the opponent is really strong. And they are strong. A very famous German coach once said: ‘If you always expect an easy game you will never have one, but if you always expect a super difficult game then from time to time you might have an easy one.’ But the other way doesn’t work.

“I have no clue what happened at Tottenham. I see Harry Kane, I see Son, I see Kulusevski, I see Perisic, Richarlison, Højbjerg and so on and they all have played exceptional football during their careers. We had some problems in moments this season and maybe other teams thought: ‘Oh it’s a great moment to play Liverpool.’ Maybe it was, I don’t know, but if I am in the other camp I would never have imagined that Liverpool would show up weak. I cannot think about Tottenham in any other way apart from I expect them to be really strong.”

Klopp insists it is premature to proclaim that Liverpool have found consistency. But he believes the form of Curtis Jones, who has started the past five matches after an injury-plagued season, demonstrates there is more quality and potential in his squad than many suspect.

“If you go to social media you think: ‘Oh my god there is no bigger problem in the world than our midfield,’” he said. “Somebody showed me after the West Ham game a thing on Instagram when people find out our lineup and what they write about it. Not a lot of them wanted Curtis on the pitch, not a lot of them wanted Cody [Gakpo] on the pitch and when they saw Joël Matip was playing they say: ‘How can they do that?’ And these are people who like us usually.

“I understand this season makes people nervous, but we have a lot of potential in this team. We didn’t show it very often this season and we will keep that, improve that and bring in new players. Both is possible.”

  • IPL 2023: Cops recover bats, shoes and other equipment of Delhi Capitals players, David Warner reacts

    [ad_1]

Although a couple of items are still missing, the Aussie opener expressed his gratitude towards the authorities for finding the items and catching the culprits.

They found the culprits. Few missing but still thank you,” Warner wrote in his post.

The incident involved the theft of 16 bats, along with pads, shoes, thigh pads, gloves, and other equipment belonging to the Delhi Capitals players. The players discovered the loss on the day they received their kit bags in their respective rooms in Delhi after arriving from Bengaluru.

The Delhi Capitals have finally secured their first win in the ongoing IPL 2023 season, defeating KKR by four wickets in a nail-biting last-over thriller. While David Warner’s aggressive batting during the powerplay was undoubtedly the key highlight of the match, there were several other notable performances worth mentioning.

Axar Patel, for instance, picked up two wickets while conceding just 13 runs in three overs, and also stayed till the end by scoring an unbeaten 19 runs to help Delhi finish the match. Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, and Ishant Sharma also picked up two wickets each, restricting Delhi to a paltry total of 127 in their 20-over quota.

Anti-encroachment drive to recover state land will continue: LG

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said the drive to evict illegal occupants of state land in Jammu and Kashmir will be resumed and the recovered land used to fuel industrial revolution in the Union Territory.

“We took the lands. Let me make it clear that we will take back all state land. The state land must remain with the government,” Sinha said at the foundation-laying ceremony of first FDI project in Jammu and Kashmir at Sempora here.

The Union Territory administration launched the eviction drive in January this year but had to stop it following protests.

Sinha said the retrieved land will be used for driving industrial revolution and creating facilities for people.

“The big tracts of land will be given for setting up industry. The smaller plots will be used to create facilities like play fields. The small patches of land will be used as burial ground for poor people who don’t even get land for last rites,” the LG said.

Laying the foundation stone for Mall of Srinagar by Dubai’s EMAAR Group at Sempora, the Lt Governor congratulated the people of J&K on the historic occasion.

“This is a new dawn of limitless possibilities. We are taking forward PM Narendra Modi ji’s vision for development of J&K. Mall of Srinagar will have transformative impact on UT & boost infrastructure, employment generation and ease of living,” he said.

Sinha said the Mall of Srinagar and allied projects with Government of Dubai will fuel the economic growth of J&K and help in achieving the shared vision of strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties between India and the UAE.

“The credit for the strong ties between the UAE and India goes to the strenuous efforts of the Prime Minister,” he added.

The Lt Governor highlighted the reforms introduced to create a favourable environment for Industries and Business to flourish in J&K.

“Unprecedented industrial investment and economic growth of J&K is laying the foundation for a stronger and more prosperous future for the people of Union Territory,” he said.

“In the last three years, we have registered phenomenal growth in different sectors and in terms of knowledge, physical and digital connectivity, Jammu and Kashmir has performed exceptionally well in the entire country,” the LG added.

Military begins efforts to recover Chinese spy balloon

    [ad_1]

aptopix us chinese balloon south carolina 50752

The military is concerned the remnants of balloon’s payload could contain explosives or hazardous material, and wants to ensure the safety of the site, VanHerck said. The balloon was as much as 200 feet tall, with a payload the size of a jetliner that weighed “in excess of a couple thousand pounds.”

The efforts to recover the balloon began as new details emerged of previous incidents of Chinese spy balloons flying over the United States. The military tracked eight such incidents, a member of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff told a member of Congress on Sunday.

“I had a conversation with someone at the Joint Staff that used the number eight,” said Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, in a Monday interview.

Two of those incidents occurred over Florida, and one over Texas, Defense Department officials told Waltz separately by phone on Sunday. Officials declined to provide details about the other incidents, he said, including under whose administration they occurred.

After the military shot down the balloon on Saturday, senior DoD officials told reporters that Chinese balloons had traversed the United States during the Trump administration. The comments caused an uproar in Republican circles, with senior Trump national security officials denying they had ever been briefed on such an incident.

Administration officials have conducted a series of briefings for members of Congress and staff since last week. On Thursday, the staff of the “Gang of Eight” lawmakers received a classified briefing, followed by a briefing for national security committee staffs on Friday.

Before the balloon was shot down on Saturday, the Pentagon notified the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Armed Services committees and the defense panels of the House and Senate Appropriations committees, and followed up with a briefing after the operation, a White House spokesperson said.

During a separate Sunday briefing, representatives from the Office of the Secretary of Defense read an opening statement about the three incidents over Florida and Texas but did not take questions, Waltz said. They also did not disclose details about the nature or size of the balloons, or whether the incidents were reported up the chain of command.

Waltz said he spoke separately with a member of the Joint Staff, who told him similar incidents had occurred eight times.

Senior Biden administration officials have since said the information was discovered after the previous administration had left office, and have offered to brief former officials on the new intelligence.

However, Robert O’Brien, Trump’s final national security adviser, said that as of Monday afternoon, he had not been contacted about any potential briefings. He reiterated previous comments that he had never heard of any such incident during his tenure.

“We were never briefed, we never heard any of it,” he said.

Waltz said he was not satisfied with the briefing he received on Sunday and is asking for additional information from the Pentagon.

“You can’t just put that out there that our airspace was violated multiple times and not give us any details,” he said.

VanHerck told reporters that the incidents went undetected due to shortfalls in military capabilities at the time.

“We did not detect those threats and that’s a domain awareness gap,” he said. The intel community, after the fact, assessed those threats through “additional means of collection.”

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Benchmark BSE Sensex and Nifty closed higher in a highly volatile trade on Monday, riding on the back of a recovery in IT, oil and financial stocks after a two-day fall even as investors remained cautious ahead of the Union budget and policy announcement by the US Federal Reserve.

The 30-share Sensex recovered 169.51 points or 0.29 percent to settle at 59,500.41 as 17 of its constituents ended in the green. During the day, it rose by 313.34 points or 0.52 percent to 59,644.24.

The broader NSE Nifty gained 44.60 points or 0.25 percent to end at 17,648.95 as 29 of its stocks advanced. The index moved in a range of 17,709.15 to 17,405.55 during the day.
