Srinagar, Feb 14 (GNS): For the first time in history of Jammu and Kashmir, record 1.88 Crore tourists visited UT in the year 2022 to enjoy the beauty of various famed tourist spots.
The enhanced tourist arrivals in the Union Territory has generated greatest employment in various regions, highlighting its overall development through a constructive approach, transformative initiatives and inevitable reforms to empower J&K for its people, culture and society.
The Government of India is also making a significant thrust to ensure better infrastructural facilities for the region’s people and entice visitors. This has resulted in a fortuitous surge in tourist activities with better law and order, promising security system, and maintenance of peace in addition to infrastructural and connectivity improvements.
J&K administration is also focused on exploring the full potential of pilgrimage tourism by developing various religious tourist circuits across the union territory. Keeping in view the increasing number of devotees coming to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, facilities and infrastructure is being strengthened.
As per the official data, the construction work of Mantalai Wellness Center has been completed at a cost of Rs. 80 crore and the design of Katra Multi Modal Station has been finalized. Similarly, twork on Tawi Riverfront is going on in full swing besides Mansar and Surinsar have made their presence on the tourism map of the country. The Government is working tirelessly to open Sanasar Tulip Garden for local people and tourists this year.
Similarly, the work on conservation and renovation of 18 historical-cultural heritage sites in Jammu, Kathua, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Udhampur will commence shortly. In April this year, Jambu Zoo shall be thrown open to the people. Home-stay Scheme has been launched with a view to foster employment generation and economic prosperity in rural areas.
Remarkably, with the launch of the new J&K Film Policy in 2021, Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as the favourite shooting destination for film industry and permission has been granted for shooting of more than 150 films and web series in less than two years.

Jammu and Kashmir as a tourist destination that is now being promoted on all possible global forums and that is the reason it witnessed highest-ever tourist footfall and air traffic in recent years.
After registering a record tourist footfall this year, mainly in leisure and adventure tourism due to sustained efforts of the Tourism Department and the stakeholders during the last two years, Jammu and Kashmir is now opening to MICE tourism.
Over the past couple of months, many corporate delegations have visited Kashmir and many more are planned for the coming seasons. Executives from travel giants visit the Valley with their clients and thus Kashmir is emerging as corporate tourist destination also.
Jammu and Kashmir has all adequate infrastructure, services and tourism package required for MICE tourism and Department is working in a holistic manner to attract tourists in all segments through a whole range of promotions, road shows, and events besides the introduction of new adventure activities and destinations to sustain the interest of visitors is also being done by the Administration on regular basis.(GNS)

McCarthy brings in record haul at first fundraiser since becoming Speaker

The event illustrated the new power structures and fault lines that have popped up in a Washington now marked by divided government. Holding the levers of power in the House, McCarthy — already a prodigious fundraiser — has become an even bigger draw. And those who are stuffing his coffers have additional incentives to do so.
Miller and the event’s co-sponsors — a number of whom once worked for the now-speaker — represent clients with stakes across major policy fights before Congress: PhRMA, Mastercard, Apple, Altria, the American Petroleum Institute and the American Investment Council, among others.
McCarthy’s close relationship with K Street has earned him ire from his own party. Shortly after Republican control of the House became clear last fall, Miller’s firm registered several new clients, including Oracle and the PGA Tour.
For McCarthy world, the scene at the Conrad Hotel, where the event was held, offered a chance to celebrate following a speakership journey mired in tumult. His historic crusade for the position spanned four days and 15 rounds of votes, culminating with major concessions to conservative members that could threaten his hold on the post.
Nearly all Republican House committee chairs also attended the fundraiser — including Armed Services Chair Mike Rogers, Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, Oversight Chair James Comer, Appropriations Chair Kay Granger, Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith and many others.
Their presence was touted by two of the hosts as a sign of Republican unity. Sam Geduldig, one of the event’s co-hosts and co-CEO of the firm CGCN, emphasized McCarthy’s members were eager to show up for him on Wednesday evening. John Stipicevic, a former McCarthy staffer-turned lobbyist at CGCN and another fundraiser co-host, maintained that McCarthy was in “lock step” with his committee chairs and his conference.
“While all the pundits on national TV stations or all over the world, talking about the deals that he cut — which they can’t explain by the way — weakened him as a speaker, I don’t think his members view him as weakened in any way at all,” said Geduldig. “I think he’s much stronger, and gaining strength, and gaining momentum every minute.”
As the event came to a close, Bill Barr, a former attorney general under the Trump administration, was spotted leaving the Conrad.

McCarthy’s camp intends to beat its previous record for the first quarter of a year: $31.5 million in 2022. Though a spokesman for the speaker noted that fundraising going into 2024 will be crowded with higher profile races.
The event was originally scheduled for Tuesday — the day of the State of the Union — at the Waldorf Astoria but was moved for logistical reasons, the spokesperson said.

Sgr among 6 districts record deficient rainfall since Jan 01-Feb 08

Srinagar, Feb 08: At least six districts of Jammu and Kashmir including the summer capital of the Union Territory, Srinagar have recorded deficient rainfall since January 01-February 08, 2023, a data compiled by Meteorological department reveals on Wednesday.
The data, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveals that J&K in general has recorded normal rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 125.5 mm, it recorded 143.5 mm, which is 14 per cent above normal.
However, six of the districts including Srinagar, Budgam, Bandipora, Kathua, Jammu and Shopian have recorded deficient rainfall with official data stating that Srinagar has recorded 91.3 mm rainfall against 113.5 mm normal rainfall, indicating 20 per cent deficient rainfall since January 01 this year to February 08.
Against 88.6 mm normal rainfall, Budgam in central Kashmir has recorded 53.7 mm rainfall during the same period and also against 95.3 mm, Bandipora has recorded only 54.8mm rainfall, which is 39 and 43 per cent deficient rainfall respectively in the two districts.
The data further reads that Shopian has recorded 38 per cent deficient rainfall till today, adding that against normal rainfall of 60.9 mm, the district has recorded only 37.8 mm rainfall till today.
Jammu and Kathua districts have also recorded 41 and 38 per cent deficient rainfall respectively, the data added.
Moreover, the data reads that seven J&K districts including Anantnag, Doda, Kulgam, Poonch, Pulwama, Rajouri and Ramban have recorded excess rainfall since January 01 till today.
It added that six J&K districts including Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Samba, Kupwara, Reasi and Udhampur have recorded normal rainfall during the same period.

Meanwhile, the weatherman here has predicted light snowfall in J&K.
Director Meteorological department, Sonum Lotus said that there is a possibility of widespread light to moderate snowfall and rain in J&K with chances of heavy snowfall over higher reaches from tomorrow afternoon till 10th February.
The night temperature plummeted once again at a few places while Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination, recorded a low of minus 7.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar also recorded minus 0.1 degree Celsius while Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 6.5 degree Celsius—(KNO)

World producing record amount of single-use plastic waste than ever: Report

The world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, mostly made from polymers created from fossil fuels, despite global efforts to reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, according to a new report released on Monday.
The second Plastic Waste Makers Index, compiled by the Western Australia-based philanthropic Minderoo Foundation, found the world generated 139 million metric tonnes of single-use plastic waste in 2021, which was 6 million metric tonnes more than in 2019, when the first index was released, CNN reported.
The report found the additional plastic waste created in those two years equates to nearly one 1 kg more for every person on the planet and was driven by demand for flexible packagings like films and sachets.
In recent years, governments around the world have announced policies to reduce the volume of single-use plastic, banning products like single-use straws, disposable cutlery, food containers, cotton swabs, bags and balloons, CNN reported.
In July, California became the first US state to announce its own targets, including a drop of 25 per cent in the sale of plastic packaging by 2032.
In December, the UK extended its list of banned items to include single-use trays, balloon sticks and some types of polystyrene cups and food containers.
Bans are also in place in the European Union, Australia and India, among other places.
But the report found that recycling isn’t scaling up fast enough to deal with the amount of plastic being produced, meaning that used products are far more likely to be dumped in landfills, on beaches and in rivers and oceans than to make it into recycling plants, CNN reported.

“It demonstrates beyond any doubt that the plastic pollution problem is getting much bigger and is being driven by the polymer producers, which are of course, driven by the oil and gas sector,” said Andrew Forrest, Minderoo founder.
He’s proposing a “polymer premium” on every kilogram of plastic polymer made from fossil fuels to give people, companies and governments a financial incentive to recycle more.
“In the advanced world, that polymer payment will lead to automatic mechanize collection. In the developing world, it’ll lead to people who would not otherwise have any work, having work making sure there’s no plastic waste going into the ocean, there’s no plastic waste on streets, there’s no plastic waste poisoning wildlife,” he said.
Last year, the UN Environment Assembly agreed to create the world’s first-ever global plastic pollution treaty.
An intergovernmental committee is working to a 2024 deadline to draft a legally binding agreement that would address the full lifecycle of plastic, from its production and design to its disposal.

Egypt’s tourism revenues hit record high in Q1 of FY 2022/23

Cairo: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said the country’s tourism revenues increased by 43.5 per cent to a record high of $4.1 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2022-2023.
Egypt’s fiscal year begins at the beginning of July and ends at the end of June the following year, reports Xinhua news agency.
The number of tourists visiting Egypt from July to September last year rose by 52.2 per cent to 3.4 million, while the number of nights tourists spent in the country increased by 47.1 per cent to 43.6 million, the bank said in an official statement.
Over the past few years, Egypt’s tourism sector, a main source of national income and hard currency for the country, has been greatly affected by the country’s fight against terrorism, especially after a Russian plane crashed over the Sinai Peninsula in October 2015, killing all 224 passengers and crew on board.
With improving security conditions in Egypt, tourism gradually recovered in the following years to bring Egypt a record high of $13 billion in revenues in 2019, when more than 13 million tourists visited the North African country, before tourist numbers declined again because of the Covid-19 lockdowns.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has also cast a shadow on the sector as the two countries have been among top sources of tourists to the country boasting many historic monuments.
Abdel Fattah al-Assi, a former assistant minister of tourism and antiquities for hotel facilities control, attributed the revival of the tourism industry to the incentives provided for foreign travel agencies and the country’s improved stability and security, among other factors.
“After the Covid-19 lockdowns, more people will spend their holidays abroad, and Egypt has many advantages for tourists as it enjoys a nice weather and offers reasonable prices (for tourists),” al-Assi told Xinhua.

The ongoing development in Egypt, such as better roads, less traffic and the renovation of most tourist destinations, will attrack more visitors, he noted.

Record oil earnings fuel California backlash against industry profits

The timing is important. Oil companies are rolling out earnings announcements as lawmakers in California are poised to hold hearings on a Newsom proposal to cap profit margins — an idea he floated last year as pump prices in California rose to the highest in the nation even as the cost of a barrel of oil dropped around the world.
Meanwhile, the price of gas in California is inching up again — reaching an average $4.55 per gallon in the state this week, up 10 cents from a week ago, according to AAA figures.
Even though Democrats control both houses of the Legislature, the governor’s assault on oil profits faces an uncertain fate. The industry wields considerable influence and some lawmakers see it as a misguided approach in a state where gas consumption is already starting to fall with the transition to zero-emission vehicles.
Newsom’s proposal, which state Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) is steering through the Legislature, would target California refineries. It still lacks the most critical detail: the amount of profit that would generate a penalty.
But Newsom’s continued messaging, along with a recent surge in local advertising from both sides of the issue, suggest a battle is brewing — even if major players in the Legislature are keeping quiet so far.
“We are continuing to review the proposal, and on anything this big, there will be a thorough vetting,” state Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) said in an emailed statement. “One thing that’s already clear is that Californians are tired of paying high prices at the fuel pump. Gouging Californians will not be tolerated.”
Chevron, Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66 and Valero — four of the five big companies with refineries in California — each released annual earnings in recent days, setting new records with a combined $74 billion in profits for 2022. The companies are projecting another strong performance this year. The fifth major refiner reports next month.
Oil industry executives are pleased with their results after a tumultuous period caused in large part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s good that markets have calmed,” Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said during a Friday earnings call. “I mean the high prices really were creating a lot of stresses out there that are not good.”
Executives also said they expect oil supplies to remain limited, a big factor in higher prices.
“We believe that the current supply constraints and growing demand will support strong margins in 2023,” Marathon Petroleum Corp. CEO Mike Hennigan said in a Tuesday earnings call.
Supply constraints also spotlight a concern oil industry lobbyists and executives have expressed regarding a profit margin cap: They say it could lead to supply shortages that caused long gas station lines, and deep political pain, for former presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.
Oil industry representatives have accused Newsom of being more interested in scoring political points than targeting the factors that increase prices at gas stations. They say he should look at other factors in higher prices, including retail competition and state taxes.
“The governor’s tax is targeted at the industry as a punishment, not as a way to lower costs for consumers,” said Western States Petroleum Association spokesperson Kevin Slagle.
Newsom has consistently rejected the industry’s arguments as “lies” and promised to hold the companies accountable.
His proposal is welcome even among people in oil-producing Kern County, said Cesar Aguirre, director of the local branch of the Central California Environmental Justice Network.
Even though the industry provides jobs, people in Kern see the proposed penalty as a way to address not just gas prices but other concerns such as contamination from wells, Aguirre said.
“We can hold them responsible, we can hold them accountable,” he said.

Pfizer reports record revenue, expects Covid-19 vaccines to be commercialized later this year

In its 2022 fourth-quarter earnings call, company executives said that they expect sales of Covid-19 vaccines to decrease, in part because they still have shots that the government purchased last year to distribute.
The decline in revenue also comes in part because an estimated 24 percent of the population will receive a Covid-19 vaccine this year, down from 31 percent in 2022 as fewer people comply with federal recommendations.
“Fewer people are expected to receive their primary doses,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said. “And for the most part only those who are older or at higher risk are expected to continue receiving more than one booster per year.”
Pfizer expects to account for about two thirds of Covid vaccinations, and Bourla estimated about 102 million shots of its vaccine, called Comirnaty, would be distributed this year. The company is not expecting any new Covid variants that would prompt more people to get vaccinated.
The company also noted that the U.S. government had previously purchased a set number of Covid-19 vaccines; but moving forward, there will be less demand once the vaccine is sold on the commercial market.
Company executives did not mention how much they plan to charge for their Covid products on the commercial market but have previously stated it would be somewhere between $110 and $130 per dose. Moderna, which also makes an mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, has floated a price of $110 to $130 per dose.
On Monday, the White House announced that it would end the Covid-19 emergency declarations in May. And last week, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee discussed the steps it would need to take for a simplified Covid-19 vaccine regimen as it moves toward a model of managing the virus on a yearly basis, similar to the way flu shots are developed and administered.
Pfizer has its sights set on future iterations of Covid-19 vaccines, which it expects will be needed as immunity wanes as the virus continues to mutate.

“We expect to see an increase in Covid-19 vaccination rates assuming the successful development and approval of a Covid-flu combination product,” Bourla said, noting that about half of eligible adults receive a flu shot annually.
Other products in the pipeline: Pfizer also noted that it expects to launch its RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older this year. The FDA said Tuesday that it would convene its external vaccine advisory committee to discuss its application in late February.
The company is also developing an mRNA-based flu vaccine and an mRNA-based shingles vaccine.

Canada welcomes record number of French-speaking immigrants

New Delhi: Welcoming the highest number of French-speaking immigrants since 2006, Canada said it has achieved its target of 4.4 per cent of Francophone newcomers outside Quebec in 2022.
This represents a significant jump of 3.02 per cent — from 1.38 per cent in 2006 to 4.4 per cent in 2022.
“Today, we are proud to announce we have reached our target of 4.4 per cent French-speaking immigrants outside of Quebec in 2022 — one year earlier than expected,” Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced on Monday.
Stating that Francophone immigrants are important to the cultural mosaic of communities across Canada, Fraser said: “We will continue to welcome French-speaking immigrants to ensure the viability of these key communities that are helping to shape the future of our country.”
English and French remain by far the most commonly-spoken languages in Canada with more than nine in 10 Canadians speaking one of the two official languages on a regular basis.
However, the proportion that French-speaking Canadians represent, dropped from 2016 (22.2 per cent) to 2021 (21.4 per cent).
Over the past year, more than 16,300 new immigrants have settled in Francophone minority communities across Canada.
During the first census year in 2006, the number of admissions of French-speaking residents outside Quebec was just over 2,800, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data.

From 2016 to 2021, the number of Canadians speaking French at home increased in Quebec, British Columbia and Yukon, but decreased in the other provinces and territories.
Canada says that French-speaking immigrants help strengthen the economy of the communities in which they have settled, and help address the larger problem of labour shortage across the country.
The North American nation wants to welcome up to 500,000 new permanent residents a year by 2025.Since the launch of IRCC’s first francophone immigration action plan in 2019, the percentage of French-speaking candidates approved through the Provincial Nominee Program grew to 6.4 per cent in 2021 from less than one per cent in 2018.
Recently, 150 Francophone candidates in the federal Express Entry system were invited to apply to Nova Scotia’s Labour Market Priorities stream of the Provincial Nominee Program (NSNP).
All these candidates either spoke French as their first official language or had Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores of 10 in all language abilities.
To achieve its ambitious Francophone immigration objectives in the years to come, Canada has allocated nearly $40.7 million over five years for Francophone immigration initiatives.

British Sikh trekker sets new polar expedition world record

London: A British Sikh Army officer and physiotherapist has set a new world record for the longest solo, unsupported, and unassisted polar expedition by a woman.
Captain Harpreet Chandi, known as Polar Preet having already completed a trekking challenge to become the first Indian-origin woman to set the record of a solo unsupported trek to the South Pole, travelled 1,397 km across Antarctica in temperatures as cold as minus 50 degrees Celsius. The previous record was 1,381 km, set by Anja Blacha in 2020.
“It was very cold and windy but I kept my breaks very short so I didn’t get too cold,” Chandi wrote on Thursday in a blog she has been maintaining while on her new polar expedition.
“I didn’t let myself stop earlier though because I wanted to get the miles in,” she said.
However, Chandi is disappointed that she does not have enough to meet her original aim of becoming the first woman to cross Antarctica solo and unsupported.
“I’m pretty gutted that I don’t have the time to complete the crossing. I know that I have done a huge journey, it’s just difficult while I’m on the ice and I know it’s not that far away,” she said.
The 33-year-old from Derby in eastern England, working at a regional rehabilitation unit in Buckinghamshire, has been pulling a sledge with all her kit and battling below freezing temperatures on her new adventure since November 2022.
The University of Derbyshire, which conferred her with an honorary degree, congratulated the trekker for breaking the “record for the longest solo, unsupported, and unassisted polar expedition by any woman in history”.

It was around three years ago when she was learning about Antarctica that she decided she wanted to do a crossing of the continent.
But she did not put in her application into the Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE), which handles the permissions for such expeditions, immediately because she wanted to build up some experience.
Her application was completed early last year and it has been all about preparing for her new goal after completing Phase 1 with her South Pole expedition in 2021. On her latest mission, she has been listening to voice notes to keep her motivated.
“I listened to childhood memories from my brothers, my mum telling me how excited she was about having a baby girl and how the midwife commented that she had never seen an Asian woman so excited about having a girl. And finally hearing my niece say it’s the most amazing thing she has seen anyone do in her entire life and it’s even more amazing because it’s her phuwa (auntie) doing it. It’s so precious to hear,” she writes on her blog this week.
Chandi has always been keen to push the human body to its limits and sees her adventures as part of this wider mission.
As an “endurance athlete”, she has run marathons and ultra-marathons and, as a British Army officer, completed large scale exercises and deployments in Nepal, Kenya and a United Nations peacekeeping tour of South Sudan.
