CNN first reported that the photo had been taken and had quickly gained “legendary status” in military circles.
The high-altitude surveillance aircraft had been sent up as the balloon traversed the U.S., and the Pentagon later cited imagery taken by the pilots to say the airship was “capable of conducting signals intelligence collection operations.”
An Air Force fighter jet shot the balloon down on Feb. 4 and “the majority of the balloon, including the payload, was recovered,” said Singh.
The Pentagon wrapped up search operations in the area off South Carolina last week and referred reporters to the FBI for details on what was recovered.
After the initial Chinese balloon incident, three other unidentified objects flying over North America were destroyed by U.S. forces just within a little over a week. Those objects were not believed to be from China or to pose a national security threat. The U.S. military did disclose, however, that they’ve observed Chinese surveillance balloons flying over the Middle East and Afghanistan in recent years.
President Joe Biden was criticized by Republicans for how the administration handled the Chinese balloon incident, including waiting until it was over water before destroying it. However, lawmakers passed resolutions condemning China for the balloon.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Wang Yi, director of China’s Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference last week about the situation and the consequences of Chinese surveillance of the U.S. Blinken stated on NBC that Wang offered no apology.
Wang publicly condemned the U.S. at the conference for the country’s response to what China claims was a weather monitoring device and accused the U.S. of warmongering.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Wednesday refused to stay the Election Commission order recognising the Eknath Shinde-led bloc as the real Shiv Sena and issued a notice to the group headed by the Maharashtra chief minister on the plea of the rival Uddhav Thackeray camp challenging the poll panel’s decision.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Thackeray, and sought response of the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shinde.
The counsel for the Shinde faction told the bench, also comprising Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, that it will not issue any whip or initiate process to disqualify the lawmakers of the Thackeray faction in the meantime.
“All right, issue notice. The counter affidavit will be filed within two weeks,” the bench said.
While issuing notice, the bench, however, refused to stay the decision of the poll panel acknowledging the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena, saying it cannot be done without hearing the other side.
The top court had on Tuesday agreed to hear the plea of the Thackeray camp against the Election Commission’s decision.
Besides recognising the Shinde-led bloc as the real Shiv Sena, the poll panel had also ordered allotment of the party’s original ‘bow and arrow’ poll symbol to it.

SRINAGAR: Real Kashmir Football Club (RKFC) on Saturday defeated Mohammedan SC in a Hero I-League 2022-2023 match 3-2 at the Synthetic Turf TRC Srinagar.
Although the RKFC players started playing attacking football, it was Mohammedan Sporting which scored the first goal. From the right wing, Marcus Joseph sent a delightful cross at the far post for Mirlan Murzaev, who beat defender Kamalpreet Singh to the ball and headed it.
Then RKFC’s Samuel Kynshi scored the equalizer. After receiving a pass from Bawitlung in the midfield, Kynshi charged at the Mohammedan goal and beat goalkeeper Samanta with an exquisite finish.
However, to the dismay of the home fans, the visitors restored their lead just six minutes later. Winger SK Faiaz cut the ball back for Christy Davis at the edge of the six-yard area, and the midfielder slotted it into the bottom corner for his second goal of the season.
To the dismay of the home fans, the visitors restored their lead just six minutes later. Winger SK Faiaz cut the ball back for Christy Davis at the edge of the six-yard area, and the midfielder slotted it into the bottom corner for his second goal of the season. In the first half, Mohammedan SC was leading 2-1.
In the second half, RKFC managed two more goals.
Kynshi made amends just three minutes after the restart by restoring parity. The 22-year-old sent a looping cross from the edge of the penalty area, and Samanta’s struggles in the Mohammedan goal continued as he could not judge the flight of the ball, which then dropped into the back of the net.
With the score locked at 2-2, it was Real Kashmir with all the pressure on the Mohammedan defence. Following a corner kick, Ibrahim Nurudeen came close to scoring in the 73rd minute. The striker received the ball right in front of the goal but was slow to react and the ball was collected by goalkeeper Samanta.
Nine minutes later, as Real Kashmir played high up in Mohammedan’s half, Murzaev made a counter-attacking run into the hosts’ half, and after reaching the by-line, the Kyrgyz cut back for Abiola Dauda but the Nigerian skied his effort.
With just four minutes of regulation time left Real Kashmir took the lead for the first time in the match. Ghanaian substitute Ernest Boateng scored with his first touch of the game to send the crowd into raptures. It was Kynshi with yet another goal contribution as his inch-perfect cross was neatly headed in by Boateng to seal all three points for Gifton Noel-Williams’ side.
Samuel Kynshi was awarded the Hero of the match for scoring two goals.
New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday recognised the Eknath Shinde-led faction as the real Shiv Sena and ordered allocation of the “bow and arrow” poll symbol to it.
In a 78-page order on the protracted battle for control of the organisation, the Commission allowed the Uddhav Thackeray faction to keep the “flaming torch” poll symbol allocated to it till the completion of the assembly bypolls in the state.
The Commission said MLAs backing Eknath Shinde got nearly 76 percent of votes polled in favour of the 55 winning Shiv Sena candidates in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly polls.
The Uddhav Thackeray faction’s MLAs got 23.5 percent of votes polled in favour of the winning Shiv Sena candidates, the three-member Commission said in a unanimous order.
There’s a pathetic but satisfying thing that occurs when you stop using an online service you’re used to frequenting. This was Facebook a few years ago, when plummeting engagement whipped the social media platform into a frenzy of desperate invitations and prompts. It’s Fresh Direct when you fill your basket with groceries and – I can’t recommend this enough, if you’re looking for the tiny high that comes from withholding – don’t check out, triggering a bunch of wheedling automated messages, begging you to come back.
This week, in my life, it’s Uber Eats. For the past couple of years I’ve ordered from them once a week and now I’ve stopped, causing the food delivery service to issue a flurry of semi-hysterical special offers. Each spam text, each begging notification, reminds me of the money I’m saving. If you like rejecting things (I like rejecting things) then this exercise will thrill you: rejection without the human cost of hurting someone’s feelings.
The bigger picture, obviously, is a consumer trend away from the convenience-related services that surged during the pandemic. Companies that boomed and attracted millions in investment are starting to wither as our online habits change. In the US, instant delivery startups such as Buyk and Jokr, which briefly boomed in 2021, are declaring bankruptcy or pulling out of the US market. The meal-kit company Blue Apron has seen its share price plunge as food costs have risen and consumer interest in pricey convenience products has dwindled. The same goes for Stitch Fix, a service for clothing delivery that briefly boomed during the pandemic. And all of this in the context of mass lay-offs in tech at a time when those companies, seemingly, have nowhere left to expand.
Supermarket shopping: ‘The joy, withheld during those two years of disruption, of going to a place and doing a thing.’ Photograph: Adam Vaughan/EPA
Though it may be bad for the economy, from the perspective of an individual trying to have a life that entails leaving the house, this trend is perhaps an encouraging sign. The same encouragement might be taken from the slowdown at Netflix; many of us are capped out after too many hours of watching TV. I’m not exactly out there every morning taking invigorating walks, but I am reading again, feeling more inclined to work rather than pass out on the sofa, and to seek out real-world rather than online experience. If habits inculcated during the pandemic were supposed to augur the future, as Derek Thompson wrote in the Atlantic last month, “the post-pandemic economy has been much weirder than most people anticipated”.
For me, the weirdest of these impulses has been a desire to return to supermarket shopping. This is partly money-related; the downturn in fast-food delivery earnings is clearly linked to pinched household incomes. It’s also a health thing; many of us are still trying to reverse the damage done by all the junk food we ate during lockdown.
But of all the habits adopted in the past couple of years, it seemed as if grocery delivery might be the obvious keeper. Post-pandemic, maybe no one wants a hulking great Peloton in their living room and the appeal of the third place – be it the gym or Starbucks – is enjoying an obvious bounce-back. But supermarket shopping, at least in New York where I live, has rarely been a pleasure. It has always been time-consuming, stressful and over-crowded, with in-store prices not much lower than what you pay for delivery. And yet, every Monday, I feel compelled to stand in line at Trader Joe’s, and stagger home carrying six bags of shopping.
All I can put this desire down to is a combination of the small satisfaction that comes from making even minor economies in the present climate; and something less tangible to do with the joy, withheld during those two years of disruption, of going to a place and doing a thing. The expense of energy has itself become a virtue. Its inverse – ordering in; falling back on convenience and paying for it – seems not only to belong to a sadder period but, at this point, when one can go out, using one’s actual body, to feel like a moral failing. If it’s a hair shirt, perhaps it feels good simply in contrast to our pandemic wardrobe. Meanwhile, I suspect watching Uber Eats freak out will never get old.

Her announcement video didn’t light the world on fire, but it was well done, and displayed her skills as a communicator.
She used her Indian American background to position herself as transcending the nation’s traditional white-Black racial divide. She defended America’s founding principles and history in a way that got some welcome pushback from the left. She touted her economic record as governor in South Carolina and her unifying response to the shooting at Mother Emanuel. She noted that Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections (Sub-text: former President Donald Trump failed to do it in both his runs). She hit the Washington establishment. And she talked of kicking bullies with her high heels.
The tone was firm, yet upbeat, and a good summation of the case for her campaign.
With Trump having announced and everyone else still on the sidelines, she’s taking advantage of the phony-war phase of the Republican nomination battle to get an extra increment of media attention as the second official candidate in the ring.
It’s a sign, though, that Trump doesn’t feel threatened by her candidacy that he — focused solely on Meatball Ron aka DeSanctimonious, aka Florida Governor Ron DeSantis — didn’t personally blast her upon her entry.
If the video is any indication, hers will be a highly conventional campaign. In all likelihood, she’s going to rely on her potentially history-making background as an Indian American woman and her youth to make her campaign stand out. The problem is that biography only goes so far — unless, say, you’re Dwight D. Eisenhower and won World War II — and there will be a number of other candidates with as strong or a stronger case to represent generational change.
Then, there’s her shifting position within the party. As an upstart gubernatorial candidate in 2010, she was a tea party favorite; then, as an incumbent governor who strongly opposed Trump, she was aligned with the establishment; then, as Trump’s first ambassador to the United Nations, she gained some MAGA credibility; finally, as a critic of Trump in the immediate aftermath of Jan. 6, she lost that MAGA credibility.
Of course, her tone quickly changed when it became clear that the party wasn’t abandoning Trump.
The rule of thumb here should be: If you are going to follow the crowd, keep your head down until you know which way it is headed.
She also made herself a hostage to fortune by saying that she wouldn’t run if Trump ran again in 2024, apparently banking on him not getting in. When it became clear that this bet wouldn’t pay off, she came up with reasons — the need for generational change, Biden’s mis-rule — why it no longer applied.
She can look forward to getting asked about this statement at every Pizza Ranch in the state of Iowa.
On paper, someone who hasn’t been particularly offensive to any of a party’s factions should be in a good position. By seeking to avoid the enmity of anyone, though, politicians often earn the indifference of all. That’s the risk for Haley.
The mood in the GOP is also not primed for conventional politics, which many Republicans will consider overly timid and not attuned to the urgency of the moment. On top of that, Haley doesn’t have a distinctive issue. She always could develop one as she’s out on the trail, but an amalgam of the GOP’s current positions is probably not going to break through.
There are more or less two models for winning a major party’s presidential nomination. One is to be the establishment frontrunner, like George W. Bush in 2000, Mitt Romney in 2012 or Hillary Clinton in 2016, with the institutional advantages to bulldoze upstart opponents. Another is to be an off-the-charts charismatic politician, like Barack Obama in 2008 or Donald Trump in 2016, who, by force of personality and with an intensely committed following, forges a unique, unexpected path to the nomination.
Haley isn’t the former and doesn’t look to be the latter, either. Her path has to be Trump and/or DeSantis being much weaker than they appear or blowing one another up in a GOP Ragnarök that creates an opening for her. This is going to be the hoped-for path of any number of other candidates, as well, adding yet another layer of difficulty.
She deserves to make her case, though. If fortune doesn’t always favor the bold, no one has ever won a presidential race by not entering it.
