‘A nightmare I couldn’t wake up from’: half of Rana Plaza survivors unable to work 10 years after disaster

    [ad_1]

The cracks on the walls started to appear two days earlier. But despite the warning signs, Moushumi Begum still came to work on 24 April 2013. Moments later, she was buried under heavy rubble. “It all happened so quickly. I vividly remember every detail about that day, even though it was 10 years ago,” says Begum, who spent three hours trapped under Rana Plaza, the eight-storey building on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh, that came crashing down.

That morning, garment workers and some factory managers had argued in the dusty courtyard outside the building, many reluctant to enter as they feared it was unsafe. Workers had been evacuated the day before because of those fears. Some say they were told they would not be paid that month’s wages if they did not go to work; others say that an internal gate was closed behind them.

In the 90 seconds it took to collapse, Rana Plaza became a symbol of global inequality. The final death toll was 1,134 people, with 2,500 injured. There were harrowing stories of survival, of people having their limbs amputated without anaesthetic to prise them from the rubble.

A new report by ActionAid Bangladesh has shed light on the devastating toll the disaster has taken on survivors a decade on, revealing that more than half (54.5%) of the survivors are still unemployed. The key reason is health conditions such as breathing difficulties, vision impairment and physical challenges, including not being able to stand or walk properly.

The report also assessed the safety of 200 current garment workers, with more than half feeling that initiatives taken by factory management were inadequate. Almost 20% of those interviewed reported that their factories lacked firefighting equipment, while 23% said emergency fire exits were not available.

Moushumi Begum, now 24, has been given a sewing machine byActionAid Bangladesh to ease her path back to work.
Moushumi Begum, now 24, has been given a sewing machine by ActionAid Bangladesh to ease her path back to work. But she still does not dare enter a tall building.

Begum was just 14 years old. Now married with two small children, she has tried to move on, but her health continues to affect her daily activities. She suffers from acute respiratory distress syndrome, a life-threatening lung injury that makes it difficult for her to breathe. She takes regular pauses as she speaks.

Since the disaster, Begum has been too scared to step foot in another factory. “The memories of that day continue to haunt me,” she says. “I feel immense anxiety just standing near a tall building.”

Acute health conditions caused by the Rana Plaza disaster have left survivors dependent on medication.
Acute health conditions caused by the Rana Plaza disaster have left survivors dependent on medication.

“It has not been easy for anyone affected by Rana Plaza to return to a normal life,” says Begum, who receives counselling and financial support from ActionAid Bangladesh. The charity operates a workers’ cafe for garment workers through which Begum has acquired a free sewing machine to motivate her in returning to work. She remains reluctant: “I don’t think I’ll ever find the courage to work in one of those buildings again.”

Husnara Akhtar, who lay for five hours under the rubble.
‘How disposable we garment workers are’ … Husnara Akhtar lay for five hours under the rubble. After she was rescued, she learned her husband had died.

Husnara Akhtar, 30, remembers having breakfast with her husband, Abu Sufyan, before they went to work that day. Both worked in the Rana Plaza building, but in different factories.

As Akhtar went to her floor, she could tell something was wrong. “People were anxious; some of the workers were standing around, refusing to sit down. Someone said it wasn’t safe, but I saw the look on my manager’s face and quickly took my place on the denim line. The lights began to flicker and the floor beneath my feet shook. Within seconds, we were plunged into darkness.”

When Akhtar regained consciousness, she found herself wedged between two dead bodies. “I lay there for five whole hours unable to move,” she recalls. “It felt like a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from. There was so much dust and so many dead bodies.”

Akhtar was eventually found by rescue workers and taken to a nearby hospital, where she discovered the extent of her injuries: concussion, cracked ribs and fractured arms that would make it impossible for her to work again.

Sufyan’s body was found a week later, crushed under a concrete pillar. “My husband was just one of the hundreds of workers that died that day,” says Akhtar tearfully. “I remember looking at his crumpled body and thinking how disposable we garment workers are.”

Safiya Khatun, who searched for 15 days for her son.
Safiya Khatun searched for 15 days for her son. On day 16, she found out he was dead.

Safiya Khatun cries whenever she thinks about what happened that day. She was in the Savar district of Dhaka when she heard a deafening sound. “It felt like the world was ending,” recalls the 66-year-old, who watched as people began to panic. “Someone said a bomb had exploded. Another said a building had collapsed. Then I heard the words Rana Plaza and my heart sank.”

Khatun rushed to the scene, where her 18-year-old son, Lal Miah, worked as a seamster on the third floor. She spent the next 15 days desperately searching for him. She carried a passport-sized photo of him and asked rescue workers at the site if they had seen him. On the 16th day, one recognised him.

The photo of 18-year-old garment worker Lal Miah.
A mother’s last hope: the photo of 18-year-old garment worker Lal Miah.

When Khatun saw her son’s body, she could barely breathe. “How could something like this happen to my precious son? The collapse of Rana Plaza left thousands of mothers like me empty-handed. It was a tragedy that could have been avoided if only the owners had listened to the workers’ concerns.”

The family now live in poverty because her son was the earner. Khatun lives in a small hut made from bamboo and metal scraps. “I was given land as compensation for the loss of my dear boy but nothing can compensate us for what we have gone through.” Many of the victims’ families were given land, but most cannot afford to build homes on it.

In Savar today, garment workers walk past an enormous pair of granite fists grasping a hammer and sickle – a monument erected in memory of Rana Plaza victims. Around the monument, on the land where Rana Plaza once stood, only weeds and litter mark the spot.

  • JK Emerging As Most Developed Region Of North India: Rana

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Stating that Jammu and Kashmir is emerging as the most developed region of North India, senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana on Sunday said that the detailed attention is being paid towards development of both the regions and their sub-regions.

“Peace and normalcy dawning in the Union Territory post abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 stands testimony to the fast changing scenario and the day is not far when the people of JK, irrespective of religion, region and caste, will march shoulder by shoulder with the compatriots to script the country’s growth story”, Rana said in a meeting at Kahpota in Panchayat Kanyala of the Nagrota Assembly Constituency.

Rana described Jammu as a miniature India where people of all faiths and ethnicities are living in harmony and peace from times immemorial. He said the pluralistic region of Jammu has all along encouraged all the religions, ethnic groups, regions and sub-regions to unite and work for the common cause of making the life of people better.

Rana said every religion teaches love and compassion and the spiritual land of India has emanated the message of humanity and guided humanity to peace, prosperity and spiritual bliss. This glorious heritage and legacy has to be sustained and strengthened by spreading the divine message of love, compassion and righteousness.

“Unity in diversity has been the greatest strength of India”, he said, adding this is the mantra that has been driving the nation to become the world leader.

“We are an extended family and committed to sharing each other’s joys and miseries”, he said, adding that he has all along remained at the beck and call of the people for helping them overcome their problems by taking up the issues concerning the constituency at appropriate forums.

  • Congress Misused Art 356 To Topple Opposition 93 Times: Rana

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Describing the Congress as the biggest pollutant in the Indian polity Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana on Saturday said history is replete of instances when the congress party belittled democracy by imposing emergency in 1975, abusing Article 356 to topple the duly elected governments 93 times and customizing the national politics by coining the slogan, ‘India is Indira, Indira is India’ way back in 1974.

Calling Congress a fast dwindling political party of the country, Rana while addressing the party workers at Samba said that Congress demolished and mutilated all the institutions of Indian democracy and disfigured its federal structure.

“Those were the times the people had been subjected to unprecedented repression and political exploitation by a family that pushed the stalwarts of the Indian freedom movement to oblivion for lust of power”, he added.

He blamed the Congress for bringing criminalization in Indian politics and dividing the society on caste and religious lines to create vote banks. The posterity will never forgive the Congress for sowing the seeds of caste-culture in the Indian polity that has adversely impacted the society over the decades, he added.

“Times have gone and the factotums of the dynasts must now learn to reconcile and adopt the new political culture of the greatest democracy of the world where a common man belonging to Other Backward Classes can rise to become the Prime Minister and a tribal woman making it to the highest office of Head of the Nation”, Mr Rana said, adding this is New India, which is stepping towards becoming the Vishwa Guru.

The Senior BJP leader termed the euphoria of the opposition as a sign of deep frustration on the face of shrinking political space across the country due to acts of omission and commission and the open loot that has brought them together to form a coalition of corrupt. The fear of being caught for plundering the public exchequer has snatched from them their basic sense of proportion, which is why the political discourse has gone down to the lowest depths of Indian history. In their attempt to demean the nation just because of hate Narendra Modi syndrome, they have started targeting the institutions, not only across the country but around the world as well, he said, adding that this is the least the people of the country will tolerate.

Devender Rana said the joining of hands by north-pole and south- pole of Indian politics is not without an agenda either. Coming as it is at a time when India has emerged as the fifth largest economy of the world and is all set to be the third in the next few years, some elements are desperate to scuttle the nation’s growth story because they don’t want India to shine under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Progressive India is an eye-sore for some nations as well, which is why the rejected politicians back home are getting oxygen to weaken the nation from within. He said all these forces will not succeed, given the resolve of Indians, irrespective of religion, region, caste or creed, to make their nation the world leader.

Rana said the coalition of corrupt and inimical forces abroad are destined to fail in their machinations, adding that this is just a matter of time.

  • MP Navneet Rana needles Thackeray, proclaims herself as ‘Hindu Sherni’

MP Navneet Rana needles Thackeray, proclaims herself as ‘Hindu Sherni’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: On Ram Navami day, independent MP from Amravati, Navneet Ravi Rana attempted to needle her bete-noire, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, here on Thursday.

Almost a year after the famous ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ row which saw Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana cooling their heels in jail, the woman MP on Thursday hit back.

Posters of the actress-turned-politician Navneet Rana proclaiming her as a ‘Hindu Sherni’ (Hindu Tigress) were seen near Thackeray’s home ‘Matoshri’ in Bandra east, Thane, Amravati and other places.

Drawing comparisons with Lord Ram’s 14-year exile, Navneet Rana (37) is shown sporting a saffron colour sari on the posters which said ‘Rajdroh & 14 days in jail’.

She also announced that on April 6 on Hanuman Jayanti Day, a 111-feet tall grand statue of Lord Hanuman would be unveiled in Amravati followed by a mass recital of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ there.

The posters have an image of Lord Ram at the top right corner and photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and her husband Ravi Rana, and one picture of Lord Hanuman’s statue to be inaugurated next month.

Earlier in the morning, Navneet Rana set the tone for Ram Navami celebrations by riding a Bullet motorcycle, sporting a stark black salwar-kurta suit with a bright orange headgear, raising full-throated slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’, several times, while speeding carefree on a deserted road on the power-bike in her hometown.

It may be recalled that last year in April, Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana and their supporters attempted to chant ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ outside Thackeray’s Bandra home, much to the chagrin of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi government then in power.

However, the MVA regime did not permit the Ranas to have their way, they detained the law-makers, arrested them and shunted them to jail amidst a huge row that went on for several days even as the Thackeray government fell after barely three months in June 2022. Later, the Ranas were granted bail by a special court.

  • Penguin moves Delhi HC against trial court injunction on Rana Kapoor book

Penguin moves Delhi HC against trial court injunction on Rana Kapoor book

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued notice to former Yes Bank Managing Director Rana Kapoor on an appeal by publishing house Penguin Random House India against a trial court order asking them to refrain from publishing and distributing a book on him.

A single-judge bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri directed Kapoor to file his reply and listed the matter for the next hearing on July 24.

The case stems from a Rs 466 crore Yes Bank scam.

Journalist Furquan Moharkan published a book titled “The Banker Who Crushed His Diamonds: The Yes Bank Story” in February 2021.

Kapoor has, however, opposed it sayimg that the book makes false allegations against him which are extremely prejudicial to the ongoing investigation.

The trial court passed the ex-parte ad interim injunction order against Moharkan’s publication and distribution of the book on December 22, 2021, and the same was confirmed on January 28, 2023.

Book publisher Penguin, in its appeal before the High Court, contended that the trial court failed to appreciate the fact that Kapoor approached the court 11 months after the publication of the book.

The argument further claimed that Kapoor was aware of the book’s planned release as early as June 2020, when the author approached his daughter to get their version of the story and she answered through her lawyer, warning him not to publish.

It further added that by not providing a discussion on merits or assigning proper reasons, especially on why the entire book is being injuncted, the trial court went beyond the Supreme Court’s judgements and it amounts to a blanket censorship, and a violation of free speech rights.

BJPs Rana Says All Party Participants Are Rejected, Dejected, Confused, Frustrated Politicians

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a scathing remark, Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana criticized the all-party meeting organized by opposition parties in Jammu, labeling it as an assembly of “rejected, dejected, confused, and frustrated” politicians. He claimed that these politicians are unnerved by the momentous changes brought about in Jammu and Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rana asserted that these changes have steered the Union Territory from a dark alley of death, destruction, and gloom to become a bright, resurgent, peaceful, and developing part of the country.

“The opposition cannot derail Jammu and Kashmir’s tryst with peace and normalcy”, he said and cautioned the opposition not to assume the role of agent provocateurs to mislead the people for furthering their nefarious political agenda.

In an informal interaction with the media persons, Rana stated that “the meet is yet another non-event of all those who have developed vested interest over the decades in boiling Kashmir to bake their political loaves and sustain their enterprise.” He further commented that “peace and normalcy across Jammu and Kashmir is a sort of threat for their political existence and thus they smell a rat in all that is being done for the overall good of the UT.”

“Politically mature people understand the gimmicks of the self-seeking political actors, who can go to any extent for remaining relevant in politics,” he stated.

He further remarked that “their negative and obstructive political campaigns will not deviate the efforts of heralding complete normalcy to which the BJP is committed.” Rana also highlighted the fast-changing scenario in the Valley, stating that “last year witnessed record tourist footfall that was incomprehensible years ago when Kashmir was pushed to a dark alley of bandhs and stone pelting.” He added that “such a scenario had become a new normal. That situation has now totally changed, with economic activity gaining momentum, development getting impetus, and the people’s participation in governance becoming predominantly discernible.”

As per Rana, “Some political entities obviously feel uncomfortable with normalcy dawning and the UT treading on the path of development and prosperity.” He also stated that “the peaceful and resurgent Jammu and Kashmir goes against their scheme of things.” The minister emphasized that “every segment of society is part of the growth story,” and those who pretend to be oblivious to the changes taking place in both regions, regardless of religion and caste, are betraying their sense of understanding.”

  • Anti-Encroachment Drive: Rana Exhorts Admin To Allay Fears Of Common Masses

Anti-Encroachment Drive: Rana Exhorts Admin To Allay Fears Of Common Masses

    [ad_1]

JAMMU: Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana on Monday exhorted the administration to take effective measures for allaying the fears of common masses about the ongoing anti-encroachment drive as per the clear directions of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, on the matter, saying that this will silence the vested interests who are out to exploit the situation as per their contingencies.

Addressing a delegation of the Civil Society, comprising representatives of every walk and shade of life, which met him at his residence, here this morning, Rana referred to the assurance held out by Lieutenant Governor that the poor would not be touched and said those creating unnecessary apprehensions are actually doing to camouflage their nefarious activities or to further their political interests by inciting common masses.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included Arun Gupta, President Chamber of Commerce, Jammu, Sahil Ji Maharaj, Mahant Mohan Giri, Mahant Rajesh Bittu, Mahant Rajeshwar Giri, Vinay Hindu, Suhail Qazmi ,Khalid Hussain, Rajeev Gupta, Mohammad Aslam Qureshi, Choudhary Iqbal, Haji Ashraf, S. Ravinder Singh, Haji Fareed, S. Manpreet Singh, Anwar Khan and many others.

He said the administration has more than once reassured the common people not to nurture any apprehension but some elements were igniting the situation to cover up and protect their shady deals. In this misadventure, unfortunately some political elements have also jumped in to give spin after spin to the drive by claiming that only a particular community is being targeted to engineer demographic change.

These political players with vested interest have already been rejected by their core constituency in the Valley for the sins committed over the decades and now they were misadventuring in this region to cook their breads, he said.

“Let these political misadventurists understand that Jammu has immense capacity and capability to sort out its own issues unitedly and the proud Dogras– Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christians, all inclusive –need no diktat from the discredited Valley leaders,” Rana said, adding that these chameleons have inflicted lot many scars on their own innocent brethren back home and now making attempts to vitiate the atmosphere. Again they are wrong in their calculation about the wisdom of Jammu, he added.

Rana said the Jammu people are unitedly acknowledging the assurance of the administration and want a comprehensive policy on anti encroachment drive as per the commitment of the Lieutenant Governor. He said the people believe in rule of law and were unequivocally against the land mafia.

Rana cautioned the disruptive elements for taking law into their own hands, saying disturbing peace and order is not Jammu ethos. He said these elements were actually playing in the hands of vested interests and disgruntled politicians, who want disharmony and disaffection among the people. Actually these people are unnerved by the massive outreach of the visionary Prime Minister Narendra Modi to last person in the society, irrespective of caste, creed, culture, region or religion, as per his cherished agenda of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabk Vishwas, Sabka Prayàs. Spreading falsehood therefore is their only ulterior tool to create disruption in the society, he maintained.

Devender Rana complimented the delegation for rising to the occasion once àgain to fight their cause as a single entity like they are known for doing in the past. He recalled how Jammu has withstood the test of times against the evil designs of vested interests whenever attempts were made to divide them by provocative actions like desecrations or by creating communal wedge. This is actually the real strength of Jammu, he added.

Later, Devender Rana accompanied the delegation to meet the Divisional Commissioner to put their case for a Comprehensive Anti Encroachment Policy.
