Hyderabad hotels no longer use curtains to cover food during Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Once upon a time the restaurants in the city, out of respect for those who fast in Ramzan, would help put up curtains to ensure that ‘rozedars‘ don’t get a look of people eating while they pass by.

As time passed, however, the practice of putting curtains or screens to cover the view of the people eating inside restaurants during the fasting hours in Ramzan has waned away.

Earlier, before Ramzan would begin, all restaurants and eateries would put up big cloth curtains. “Motive was to give a safe space to people who visit during fasting hours and eat sometime. Not all fast during Ramzan because of health-related issues, so such people would feel shy from visiting the hotel and eating. At home, one cannot expect families to cook food for one or two people,” said Syed Naseer of Al Madina Hotel, Falaknuma.

The other reason for putting curtains or screens at restaurants was to avoid hurting the sentiments of the pious who fast during the holy month of Ramzan. “Generally, it was to respect the religious beliefs of those fasting during Ramzan. In Muslim localities, all hotels preferred to put curtains or screens in Ramzan. The practice now has gone over a period of time,” said Moin Khan, a hotel owner at Misrigunj.

The practice of putting curtains was not restricted to any particular area or restaurant/hotel. “It was a uniform protocol. Sincerely adhered to by all hotel managements in Ramzan,” recalls Syed Mujeeb, an old-timer from Charminar. The curtain was removed after sunset when people break their fast for the day. The next morning the curtains would be put back.

This is something also seen in Middle East countries, including Dubai, earlier. Three years ago the UAE government there announced it was no longer mandatory to put curtains or screens at the hotel.

Justin, Hailey Bieber’s remark on Ramzan fasting irks Gauahar Khan

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Actor Gauahar Khan called out celebrity couple Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber for their comments on fasting during the holy month of Ramzan after they laughed over the aspects of ‘Roza’. In an online interview, Justin and Hailey made fun of people who observe fast during Ramzan. Justin was saying that fasting “deprives your body of nutrition.”

After watching the interview of Justin and Hailey, Bigg Boss fame Gauahar Khan took to her Instagram stories to call out the celebrity couple for making such an insensitive remark.

Justin and Hailey are seen discussing the concept of fasting in an interview shared by a page named Hijab Modern on Instagram. “I gotta really think about that, I have never really done it…I think our bodies need nutrition to think properly.” starts Justin.

Hailey then said that without having food for the whole day does not “make sense to her,” and further said, if you want to fast off the TV, fast off your phone, I think I believe in that more, but fasting off food… it never really made sense to me… or if you are fasting sweets or fasting sugar.”

“We’re totally like yeah, that’s why you are stupid!” she concluded.

The comments made by Justin and Hailey did not go well with Gauahar Khan and she posted the video on her Instagram Stories and wrote in the caption, “Just proves how dumb they are. Only if they knew about the science behind it. And the health benefits from it! Get an education @Justinbieber and @haileybieber. Its okay to have an opinion btw! But be intelligent enough to put forth correctly.”

  • Ramzan fast on Hyderabad road: Descendants of those who served Nizam left homeless

Ramzan fast on Hyderabad road: Descendants of those who served Nizam left homeless

    [ad_1]

The holy month of Ramzan has begun, but for 35 Muslim families in Hyderabad’s Bistiwada area, it’s a month of hardships and struggles. These families, who are descendants of those who served the Nizam, are spending their days and nights on the streets, observing the Ramzan fast on the road.

Last month, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) pulled down their dwellings, leaving them homeless. The families, including children and senior citizens, are living with their belongings spread out on the streets.

These families have been living in the Bistiwada area for six generations, and they have power bills, water bills, and property tax receipts. Fouzia Sultan, a member of one of the affected families, stated that the land was allotted to her grandfather, an ex-serviceman, in 1951. The property was registered in 1981, and the problem started in 1996 when it was claimed that the land belonged to the government.

In 1996, a stay order was obtained, but on February 5 of this year, claimants to the property were asked to visit the GHMC office at Khairatabad. Upon reaching there, officials informed them that they had to leave the property along with their belongings by February 17.

Though, the families started the process to seek legal remedy, on February 13, they were asked to leave the premises along with their belongings as the GHMC would pull down their dwellings on February 14. As informed, GHMC officials pulled down their dwellings on February 14, leaving them homeless.

Now, in the holy month of Ramzan, these families are facing immense difficulties. They have nowhere to go and are spending their days and nights on the street, observing the Ramzan fast on the road.

As it is a heartbreaking situation, the government should take swift action to provide them with a roof over their heads.

  • As Ramzan begins, China’s Muslims face fasting ban, monitoring

As Ramzan begins, China’s Muslims face fasting ban, monitoring

    [ad_1]

Washington: As Muslims around the world prepare to begin the holy month of Ramzan, Muslims in China are facing fasting ban while their cultural and religious traditions are increasingly coming under attack, according to a media report.

Uyghurs in the northwestern region of Xinjiang are being ordered not to allow their children to fast, with the latter being quizzed by the authorities as to whether their parents are fasting, local officials and rights groups said, RFA reported.

“During Ramzan, the authorities are requiring 1,811 villages [in Xinjiang] to implement a round-the-clock monitoring system, including spot home inspections of Uyghur families,” World Uyghur Congress spokesperson Dilshat Rishit said, RFA reported.

During Ramzan, Muslims are called to fast during daylight hours.

China’s 11.4 million Hui Muslims close-knit ethnic Chinese communities who have maintained their Muslim faith over centuries are in danger of being erased entirely under the Communist Party’s draconian religious rules, rights groups have warned in a new report.

They have been identified by Beijing as “a threat to be resolved through forcible assimilation”, said a report from a coalition of rights groups, including the Network of Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), RFA reported.

This is in stark contrast to the relative freedom they enjoyed before President Xi Jinping launched a renewed attack on religious worship, forcing Christians, Muslims and Buddhists alike to submit to party control and censorship of their religious lives under his “sinicisation”, the report said.

“Hui community members were able to openly participate in mosque communities, Arabic schools, and for private worship, albeit under restrictions facilitated by party liaisons. Hui entrepreneurs were encouraged to develop business and tourism connections with the wider Muslim world as part of the Belt and Road Initiative,” it said, RFA reported.

China has also targeted Muslim communities with its “ethnic unity” campaign under which officials impose Han Chinese “relatives” on ethnic minority Uyghur families, who then put pressure on them to observe non-Muslim traditions, including drinking alcohol and eating pork.

“Unity” policies haven taken place in Xinjiang against the backdrop of the mass incarceration of at least 1.8 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minority Muslims in “re-education” camps, and their involvement in forced labour, as well as amid reports of the systemic rape, sexual abuse, and forced sterilization of Uyghur women in the camps, RFA reported.
