Telangana: KCR’s rally in Nanded a mega flop, says Bandi Sanjay

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Sunday described the public meeting of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) at Maharashtra’s Nanded as a damp squib.

“The so-called national meeting of KCR was a mega flop. The people of Maharashtra cared a damn for the rally, though 30 MLAs, two ministers and two MPs had camped in Nanded for the last 25 days. Finally, they managed the show by mobilising people from the bordering Telangana districts by paying them Rs 500 each,” Sanjay said in a statement in the evening.

He said though the BRS had given a huge hype to the meeting saying that top leaders of Maharashtra would join the party, it turned out to be a flop show. Most of those who joined the party were outdated leaders who cannot poll even 10 votes in their respective villages. “That KCR himself appeared irritated for being made to wait holding the pink stoles itself was an indication to the fate of the BRS in Maharashtra,” he said.

Referring to KCR’s promises made at the meeting, Sanjay said they all were non-starters. “The chief minister promised to provide 33 percent quota for women in the legislatures. This is just a hollow promise. He did not have a woman cabinet minister for five years and has so far not nominated the chairperson of women’s commission. Not a single woman was given any nominated post. There is not a single woman Rajya Sabha member representing TRS. He should have mentioned all these points at the Nanded meeting,” he said.

On KCR’s reference to the farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra, the BJP leader said it was like devils quoting scriptures. Compared to Telangana, Maharashtra’s population is three times more. In terms of farmers’ suicides, Telangana stands fourth in the country.

“Despite being in power for two terms, KCR has failed to stop farmers’ suicides in the state and more so, in his own Gajwel constituency,” he criticised.

Sanjay reiterated that the state government had done away with all subsidies in the name of implementing Rythu Bandhu scheme for farmers. It has not been implementing the Central government’s Fasal Bima Yojana, he said.

He also described KCR’s tall claim of giving round-the-clock power supply to agriculture as a big joke. “In the Telangana districts bordering Nanded, farmers are agitating for at least eight hours power supply and protesting against collection of additional consumption deposits,” he pointed out.

Sanjay also found fault with KCR for making lofty statements on irrigation, drinking water supply, power and road infrastructure, as if he was a great intellectual. “It is just an empty rhetoric, as he has failed to implement them in his own state,” he said.

On KCR’s statement that he would nationalise all privatised enterprises if BRS was voted to power, the BJP president recalled that the chief minister had failed to revive the closed units like Nizam Sugar Factory and AP Rayons. “Who will believe his empty talk?” he asked.

Sanjay claimed that Maharashtra had been far ahead of Telangana in several aspects like construction of housing for the poor, implementation of Ayushman Bharat, payment of compensation to the farmers for the crop loss, industrial growth etc. “Telangana, however, is NO. 1 in liquor sales, high diesel and petrol rates,” he criticised.

Coming down heavily on KCR for invoking Shivaji’s name to promote the BRS, the BJP leader said while Shivaji had established a true Hindu rajya, KCR had mortgaged the state with the Nizam’s successors and Razakars. He alleged that KCR and his family members had shown more interest in making money through scams; yet, are giving call for a people’s movement on the lines of Jayaprakash Narayan.

“The people are laughing at your talk. It is certain that they will bury the BRS deep in the soil in the next elections,” he added.

Thousands rally as wave of terrorism hits Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Peshawar: Thousands across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) took to the streets to record their protest against increasing lawlessness and terrorism in the region, demanding that the vulnerable police force be armed to the teeth, local media reported.

They were holding white flags and demanding strict action against terrorism, The Express Tribune reported.

Civil society member, lawyers, political workers and the general public attended the protests held at Peshawar, Bajaur, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, Bannu, DI Khan and other key cities.

They said the police have been in the vanguard of terror fight and they should be protected and equipped properly to combat the menace effectively, The Express Tribune reported.

The rallies come as Pakistan has been hit by a wave of terrorism, mostly in K-P, as also in Balochistan and the Punjab town of Mianwali, which borders K-P. A terror attack also reached as far as the peripheries of Islamabad.

On January 30, a powerful explosion ripped through a mosque in Peshawar’s Red Zone area where between 300 and 400 people – mostly police officers – had gathered for prayers. The suicide blast blew away the wall of the prayer hall and caused the inner roof to collapse in which 101 people, mostly policemen, were killed.

January was the deadliest month since 2018, in which 134 people lost their lives – a 139 per cent spike – and 254 received injuries in at least 44 terrorist attacks across the country, The Express Tribune reported.

On Friday, several rallies organised by local rights organisations were held in K-P’s Shangla district. The leadership of different political parties, including the PTI, PPP, Awami National Party (ANP) and others, had addressed the rallies.

  • Rupee gains 12 paise against US dollar on rally in equities

Rupee gains 12 paise against US dollar on rally in equities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The rupee appreciated 12 paise to close at 82.08 against the US currency on Friday, supported by a rebound in domestic equities and easing crude oil prices.

However, corporate dollar demand and weak macroeconomic data weighed on investor sentiments and restricted the sharp gain in the rupee, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 82.15 against the US dollar and finally settled at 82.08, registering a gain of 12 paise over its previous close of 82.20.

During the trading session, the rupee swung between a low of 82.31 and a high of 81.76 against the dollar.

Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities said the Indian rupee recovered after touching a three-week low as bargain buying emerged in domestic equities.

The long unwinding in the dollar, and expected intervention along with the weaker crude and dollar index supported the rupee to gain on Friday.

“Next week, the focus will remain on the RBI monetary policy decision after the recent growth-focused budget from the government,” Parmar said, adding that Spot USD/INR has resistance between 82.50 to 82.75 while on the lower side, 81.50 becomes good support.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, declined 0.12 per cent to 101.63.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures advanced 0.39 per cent to USD 82.49 per barrel.

“Indian Rupee appreciated on a rebound in domestic equities and weakness in crude oil prices. However, positive US Dollar capped sharp gains,” said Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

Choudhary further noted that the rupee depreciated earlier today as PMI data was disappointing. India’s services PMI fell to 57.2 in January from 58.5 in December, while the composite PMI fell to 57.5 from 59.4 during the same period.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a slight positive bias as a rebound in domestic equities may lead to fresh foreign inflows. Decline in crude oil prices and weak dollar amid dovish Fed may support rupee at lower levels,” Choudhary said.

Market participants may remain cautious ahead of non-farm payrolls and ISM services PMI data from the US. While the payroll data is expected to show a slowdown in the pace of job additions, services PMI is expected to show the sector move to expansion territory, Choudhary added.

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 909.64 points or 1.52 per cent to end at 60,841.88, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 243.65 points or 1.38 per cent to 17,854.05.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 932.44 crore, according to exchange data.

BRS to hold public meeting in Nanded on Feb 5, its first rally outside Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: After the success of its first public meeting in Khammam recently, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi is all set to hold its second meeting in Nanded in Maharashtra, the first meeting of the party outside Telangana on February 5, BRS sources said on Monday.

Telangana Minister for Endowments Indrakaran Reddy and some senior leaders of the party recently visited the neighbouring state to oversee the arrangements including crowd mobilisation plans.

“This is the first meeting of BRS outside Telangana. KCR (Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao) will address the gathering. Some of the important leaders of the Nanded region are expected to join the party,” the party sources told PTI.

Rao is likely to visit a famous gurudwara in Nanded and offer prayers before the meeting, they further said. Nanded was chosen as the district has a sizeable population of Telugu-speaking people due to its proximity to Telangana.

KCR had earlier told media persons that several villages in the neighbouring state want to merge with Telangana attracted by the welfare and developmental schemes being implemented by his government.

Asserting that the BRS’ slogan in the run-up to 2024 general elections would be ‘Ab ki baar kisan sarkar’ (This time, a government for farmers), KCR recently said Maharashtra continues to witness the highest number of farmers’ suicides despite being one of the richest states.

According to political analysts, the focus of Rao’s speech would be on farmers’ issues in the Nanded meeting.

BRS will also be holding a public meeting at the Parade Ground in Secunderabad and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, JD(U) National President Lalan Singh as representative of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and Dr B R Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar among other dignitaries would attend it, Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashant Reddy had said in a release last week.

Before the public meeting, the leaders would also be attending the inaugural ceremony of the new secretariat complex of Telangana here on that day.

The building named after B R Ambedkar will be inaugurated by KCR between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm on February 17, an auspicious time suggested by Vedic pundits, Reddy said.

  • ‘Here again’: Abortion activists rally 50 years after Roe

‘Here again’: Abortion activists rally 50 years after Roe

    [ad_1]

    womens march abortion rights 19029

A dozen Republican-governed states have implemented sweeping bans on abortion, and several others seek to do the same. But those moves have been offset by gains on the other side.

Abortion opponents were defeated in votes on ballot measures in Kansas, Michigan and Kentucky. State courts have blocked several bans from taking effect. Myriad efforts are underway to help patients travel to states that allow abortions or use medication for self-managed abortions. And some Democratic-led states have taken steps to shield patients and providers from lawsuits originating in states where the procedure is banned.

Organizers with the Women’s March said their strategy moving forward will focus largely on measures at the state level. But freshly energized anti-abortion activists are increasingly turning their attention to Congress, with the aim of pushing for a potential national abortion restriction down the line.

Sunday’s main march was held in Wisconsin, where upcoming elections could determine the state Supreme Court’s power balance and future abortion rights. But rallies took place in dozens of cities, including Florida’s state capital of Tallahassee, where Vice President Kamala Harris gave a fiery speech before a boisterous crowd.

“Can we truly be free if families cannot make intimate decisions about the course of their own lives?” Harris said.
In Madison, thousands of abortion rights supporters donned coats and gloves to march in below-freezing temperatures through downtown to the state Capitol.

“It’s just basic human rights at this point,” said Alaina Gato, a Wisconsin resident who joined her mother, Meg Wheeler, on the Capitol steps to protest.

They said they plan to vote in the April Supreme Court election. Wheeler also said she hoped to volunteer as a poll worker and canvass for Democrats, despite identifying as an independent voter.

“This is my daughter. I want to make sure she has the right to choose whether she wants to have a child,” Wheeler said.

Buses of protesters streamed into the Wisconsin capital from Chicago and Milwaukee, armed with banners and signs calling for the Legislature to repeal the state’s ban.

Eliza Bennett, a Wisconsin OBGYN who said she had to stop offering abortion services to her patients after Roe was overturned, called on lawmakers to put the choice back in the hands of women. “They should be making decisions about what’s best for their health, not state legislatures,” she said.

Abortions are unavailable in Wisconsin due to legal uncertainties faced by abortion clinics over whether an 1849 law banning the procedure is in effect. The law, which prohibits abortion except to save the patient’s life, is being challenged in court.

Some also carried weapons. Lilith K., who declined to provide their last name, stood on the sidewalk alongside protestors, holding an assault rifle and wearing a tactical vest with a holstered handgun.

“With everything going on with women and other people losing their rights, and with the recent shootings at Club Q and other LGBTQ night clubs, it’s just a message that we’re not going to take this sitting down,” Lilith said.

The march also drew counter-protesters. Most held signs raising religious objections to abortion rights. “I don’t really want to get involved with politics. I’m more interested in what the law of God says,” John Goeke, a Wisconsin resident, said.

In the absence of Roe v. Wade’s federal protections, abortion rights have become a state-by-state patchwork.

Since June, near-total bans on abortion have been implemented in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia. Legal challenges are pending against several of those bans. The lone clinic in North Dakota relocated across state lines to Minnesota.

Bans passed by lawmakers in Ohio, Indiana and Wyoming have been blocked by state courts while legal challenges are pending. And in South Carolina, the state Supreme Court on Jan. 5 struck down a ban on abortion after six weeks, ruling the restriction violates a state constitutional right to privacy.

Wisconsin’s conservative-controlled Supreme Court, which for decades has issued consequential rulings in favor of Republicans, will likely hear the challenge to the 1849 ban filed in June by the state’s attorney general, Josh Kaul. Races for the court are officially nonpartisan, but candidates for years have aligned with either conservatives or liberals as the contests have become expensive partisan battles.

Women’s rallies were expected to be held in nearly every state on Sunday.

The eldest daughter of Norma McCorvey, whose legal challenge under the pseudonym “Jane Roe” led to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, was set to attend the rally in Long Beach, California. Melissa Mills said it was her first Women’s March.

“It’s just unbelievable that we’re here again, doing the same thing my mom did,” Mills told The Associated Press. “We’ve lost 50 years of hard work.”

The Women’s March has become a regular event — although interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic — since millions rallied in the United States and around the world the day after Trump’s January 2017 inauguration.

Trump made the appointment of conservative judges a mission of his presidency. The three conservative justices he appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court — Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — all voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

    [ad_1]

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was injured in firing during his rally in Gujranwala in Pakistan’s Punjab province and was rushed to a hospital. He was moving inside an SUV while having his right leg wrapped.

When Imran Khan was speaking from atop a container truck to address his ongoing “long march” to Islamabad against the Shehbaz Sharif government, the attacker, who has since been apprehended, opened fire at him from below.

About 200 kilometres from Islamabad, the incident occurred nine months after he was unseated from office for losing the trust of the army establishment.
