Decades-old demand of ‘Ahir Regiment’ raised its head again in Bhopal

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Decades-old demand of instituting ‘Ahir Regiment’ raised its head again here when thousands of Yadav and Ahir community members, including ex-servicemen, from across the country descended in Bhopal here on MVM college ground on Sunday. They came from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to participate in the rally to press their demand.

Later, a delegation submitted a memorandum to the Bhopal district administration demanding the government to form a full-fledged infantry regiment for the community at the earliest. Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Ahir and Yadav community members have come out strongly pressing for their demand of ‘Ahir Regiment’. A few days earlier, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath had written to the Prime Minister and defence minister to institute the regiment.

The community members said they have been raising the demands for decades but the government had not considered it. Highlighting the bravery and patriotism of Yadavs, the community leaders said that the Yadavs have made a lot of sacrifices in Pre-Independence and Post-Independence. They laid down their lives for the country combating the enemies at the Line of Control, in 1962 during the Indo-China war at Rezang La Pass, which is at a height of 17,000 feet, 120 soldiers had laid their lives fighting 3000 Chinese soldiers. All the Indian soldiers belonged to the Yadav community, they said.

Among the martyrs, major Shaitan Singh had received ‘Param Veer Chakra’ and other eight had received ‘Veer Chakra’. In the world war, 243 soldiers martyred were from the Yadav community, they said, adding that Brigadier Yogendra Singh, who was awarded the highest Indian wartime gallantry decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions during the Kargil War is also a Yadav.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Arun Yadav, who participated in the public meeting, said in the Indian army, there are already Sikh regiment, Rajput regiment, Gorkha regiment, Mahar regiment so why can’t there be Ahir Regiment? And, if Ahir Regiment is instituted it will be a commemoration of the sacrifice made by the community for the country.

  • US could default this summer unless $31.4tn debt ceiling is raised, CBO warns

US could default this summer unless $31.4tn debt ceiling is raised, CBO warns

    [ad_1]

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on Wednesday said the US treasury department will exhaust its ability to pay all its bills sometime between July and September, unless the current $31.4tn cap on borrowing is raised or suspended.

In a report issued alongside its annual budget outlook, the non-partisan CBO cautioned that a historic federal debt default could occur before July if revenue flowing into the treasury in April – when most Americans typically submit annual income tax filings – lags expectations.

The pace of incoming revenue, coupled with the performance of the US economy in the coming months, makes it difficult for government officials to predict the exact “X-date”, when the treasury could begin to default on many debt payments without action by Congress.

“If the debt limit is not raised or suspended before the extraordinary measures are exhausted, the government would be unable to pay its obligations fully,” the CBO report said. “As a result, the government would have to delay making payments for some activities, default on its debt obligations, or both.”

Separately, the CBO said annual US budget deficits will average $2tn between 2024 and 2033, approaching pandemic-era records by the end of the decade – a forecast likely to stoke Republican demands for spending cuts.

Meanwhile, the CBO estimated an unemployment rate of 4.7% this year, far above the current 3.4%.

CBO director Phillip Swagel attributed the rise to higher interest rates that particularly are hitting the housing industry, coupled with slowing business investment.

The sobering analysis reflects the full impact of recent spending legislation, including investments in clean energy and semiconductors and higher military spending, along with higher healthcare, pension and interest costs. It assumes no change in tax and spending laws over the next decade.

“Over the long term, our projections suggest that changes in fiscal policy must be made to address the rising costs of interest and mitigate other adverse consequences of high and rising debt,” Swagel said in a statement.

The need to raise the debt ceiling is driven by past spending laws and tax cuts, some enacted under Joe Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump.

Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, want to withhold a debt limit increase until Democrats agree to deep spending cuts. Democrats in turn say the debt limit should not be “held hostage” to Republican tactics over federal spending.

After hitting the $31.4tn borrowing cap on 19 January, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the treasury can keep up payments on debt and federal benefits and make other outlays at least through 5 June using cash receipts and extraordinary cash management measures.

    Year of the debt limit

So far in 2023, not a day has gone by on Capitol Hill without lawmakers jousting over the debt limit, as Democrats press for a quick, clean increase in treasury borrowing authority and Republicans insist on first nailing down significant reductions in future government spending.

Social security and Medicare, the government’s popular pension plan and its healthcare program for Americans ages 65 and older, are at the center of the debt limit and government funding debate, as both parties also jockey to define the contours of the 2024 presidential and congressional election campaigns.

“There has been a Republican drumbeat to cut social security and Medicare,” Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, told reporters on Tuesday.

Republican Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell has labored, without much success so far, to smother such talk.

“Let me say one more time. There is no agenda on the part of Senate Republicans to revisit Medicare or social security. Period,” he said at a news conference.

Most Americans do not closely follow Washington’s debt-ceiling saga, but they still worry it could hurt their finances, according to a Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll conducted between 6-13 February.

In that poll, 55% of US adults said they have heard little or nothing about the debate, but three-quarters of respondents said Congress must reach a deal because defaulting would add to their families’ financial stress, largely through potentially higher borrowing costs.

  • ‘Adaniscam’ trends on Twitter, questions on deposits in LIC, SBI raised

‘Adaniscam’ trends on Twitter, questions on deposits in LIC, SBI raised

    [ad_1]

Following the outbreak of the Hindenburg report on the Adani group, on Friday, the hashtags ‘Hindenburg Report’, ‘Hindenburg Research’, and ‘Adani scam’ trended on Twitter.

Several Twitter users including members of the opposition raised questions on the union government’s role in the development.

Along with the Adani Group share pummelling on Friday, with the group losing Rs 3.37 lakh crore in aggregate market capitalisation in a single day, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), the single largest non-promoter domestic shareholder in five of the largest Adani Group companies by market capitalisation, lost Rs 16,627 crore due to a drop in the value of its Adani Group holdings.

The value of LIC’s Adani Group assets fell from Rs 72,193 crore on Tuesday to Rs 55,565 crore on Friday, a 22% drop in only two days.

Meanwhile, LIC’s share price declined 3.5 percent during the day on Friday, falling 5.3 percent in the prior two days.

By the time of publishing this story, #Adaniscam garnered 10.4k tweets and #HindenburgResearch garnered 4764 tweets.

    Reactions

Some of India’s top public sector banks stated their exposure to the Adani Group was within the limitations outlined by the Reserve Bank of India despite Friday’s steep decline in shares of group firms and the lenders that have exposure to it. The RBI permits a bank to expose no more than 25 percent of its eligible available capital base to any one group of related entities.

“There is nothing alarming about our Adani exposure and we don’t have any concerns as of now,” SBI chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said speaking to Reuters.

Khara said the Adani Group hadn’t raised any funding from SBI in the recent past and that the bank would take a ‘prudent call’ on any funding request from them in the near future, reported Reuters.

SBI has reached out to the company for clarification and the board will take any decision on the bank’s exposure to the group only after that, reported Reuters quoting an unnamed official.

An official at the state-run Bank of India said the loans to the Adani group were within permissible limits.

“Our exposure to the Adani Group is below the large exposure framework of the Reserve Bank of India,” Reuters quoted an unnamed executive at the Bank of India as saying.

“Till last month, the Adani Group’s interest payment on loans has been intact.”

Bank executives at two other private lenders said that they were not yet in “panic mode” but being watchful, the report stated.

The LIC is still investing additional money in Adani’s flagship unit despite the fraud allegations. According to a document, the state-controlled life insurer is investing around $37 million as an anchor investor in Adani Enterprises Ltd.’s $2.5 billion new share sale. It would increase its present ownership of 4.23% with the investment.

Adani Power Ltd., Adani Green Energy Ltd., Adani Transmission Ltd., Adani Ports, and Special Economic Zone Ltd., and Adani Enterprises Ltd. make up the Adani Group.

    What is the Hindenburg report?

Hindenburg Research, a well-known short seller in the United States, disclosed short positions in the Adani Group on Wednesday, accusing the conglomerate of the improperly wide use of businesses established in offshore tax havens and expressing worry about excessive debt levels.

The revelation, which came just days before Adani Enterprises’ (ADEL.NS) $2.5 billion share sale, sent Adani group businesses’ shares tumbling.

It also said that seven Adani listed firms had an 85% downside on a fundamental basis because to what it dubbed ‘sky-high valuations’.

The firm published an investigative document titled ‘Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History‘ and revealed findings of their two-year investigation presenting evidence that the Rs 17.8 trillion worth Adani group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

According to the report, Gautam Adani, the Adani Group’s founder, and chairman, has a net worth of about $120 billion, which he has increased by more than $100 billion in the last three years, primarily as a result of stock price growth in the group’s seven most important publicly traded companies, which have increased by an average of 819 percent during that time.

KT Rama Rao had also challenged the central investigative agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax Department (IT) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to probe into the Adani enterprise’s ‘scam’.

The challenge comes hours after US’s Hindenburg Research’s investigative document, alleging fraud in Adani Group’s dealings, surfaced.

The Adani Group has said that accounting (or fraud-type assertions) “investigation” by Hindenburg Research are devoid of facts.

Of Adani’s portfolio’s nine publicly listed entities, eight are audited by one of the Big 6.

On leverage or over-leverage issue — 100 of our various companies are rated (these account for nearly 100 percent of our EBITDA), Adani Enterprises said in a stock exchange filing.

On revenue or balance sheet being artificially inflated or managed — out of nine listed companies in Adani portfolio six are subject to specific sector regulatory review for revenue, costs, and capex, Adani Group said.

In relation to governance, four of our large companies are in the top 7 percent of the peer group in Emerging markets or the sector of the world.

On the LAS position do note that overall promoter leverage is less than 4 percent of promoter holding, the group said.

Hindenburg asked 89 questions in total, the following Question by number: 1,2,3 5,6,7 19,20,21, 27,28,29 62,63,64 and 72,74,75,77,78,79 are in relation to Related party transactions, DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) and court cases.

Twenty-one in total cannot be claimed to be the result of any investigation over a two-year period or any such assertion as they were disclosed in the public documents all the way back from 2015 onwards, the group said.

The 21 questions are nothing but Adani Portfolio’s own public disclosure from as far back as 2015, the statement said.

Will we be able to look away from the mummy issues raised on Milf Manor? | Bidisha Mamata

    [ad_1]

If you’re a woman of a certain age, struggling in the housing crisis, you could always check into Milf Manor. It’s a new US reality show in which women and their sons live in a house together and then all the ladies and all the guys flirt with each other (Milf stands for Mum I’d Love to Fuck, in case you didn’t know). In the search for a new hit, Milf Manor’s producers have gone back to the oldest human drive on the planet, the mother of them all: the original dyad between a baby and their primary caregiver. Maternal love, filial love, carnal love and erotic love blend together in a mutually jealous, weirdly kinky, televised Freudian melange. It’s natural, it’s normal, it’s common, it’s fine! After all, Sophocles wrote Oedipus Rex 400 years before the birth of Christ. Once you pass 40, you become invisible to men in their 30s while every 20-year-old on the planet notices you, including waiters, security guards, interns and other women’s sons. I can explain it in one word: perimenopause. When wise Mother Nature realises your ship is sailing, she starts wafting out your erotic pheromones at double strength like novelty cocktails during happy hour at the last-chance saloon and you attract those virile young males who are biologically best able to “pollinate the flower”. Milf Manor is airing on the cable network TLC, which also happens to stand for Tender Loving Care. As the guys queueing to visit Milf Manor know, that’s exactly what you get when you come to Mummy.

    Last orders for alcohol?

Is even drink one too many? Photograph: John Angerson/Alamy

Research from Canada indicates that, rather than abstaining from booze only in dry January, we should extend it for ever as there is no really safe alcohol limit. I’ve never been a big drinker because I only do things that benefit my career and being drunk doesn’t. Also, I’m a puker. There’s no happy moment. I’m sober, then I go hot and cold, my vision starts shimmering, my stomach turns over and it all ends in clammy remorse. It’s basic to celebrate boozing as a hobby and philistine to build an entire culture or national identity out of it. No one on the planet is better drunk than sober, alcohol is an unnecessary expense and it’s not good for your complexion. There’s nothing cool about being sloppy or making bad decisions or not being able to remember what you did. Life is enjoyable in itself; good company gives exactly the same buzz that you think a cocktail will.

    Get into the groove…

    Madonna on stage

Looking at the headlines, it may seem as though there’s little to cheer about. Well, the Queen of Pop, Madonna herself, is here to set things right with her greatest hits tour, Celebration. I admire Madonna both as a creative artist and a tough woman in public life. The last really fun thing I did before the pandemic was seeing the first night of her Madame X tour at the London Palladium three years ago. She was so charismatic that she glowed like a laser, her star quality washing over the audience in throbbing waves of white light. In an age when fame lasts barely as long as a TikTok reel, it’s good to honour a four-decade career that combines style and substance in one unique, steely package. To quote from her hit, Vogue, when “everywhere you turn is heartache… I know a place where you can get away. It’s called a dancefloor” and Madonna knows what it’s for.
