Raipur: Four persons were arrested on Thursday, a day after a rally was taken out in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur by a group of people allegedly in support of wanted pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh, an official said.

Based on the examination of CCTV footage and video clips of the statements given by people involved in the rally, a first information report (FIR) was registered at Civil Lines police station here, Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prasant Agrawal told PTI.

Four Raipur residents, identified as Diler Singh Randhawa (46), Manindarjeet Singh alias Mintu Sandhu (40), Harinder Singh Khalsa (44) and Harpreet Singh Randhawa alias Chintu (42), were arrested for allegedly taking out a foot march in support of Amritpal Singh, he said.

The four have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity), SSP Agrawal said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said in the state Assembly that he had ordered police to probe the issue and take action against those found indulging in anti-national activities.

On Wednesday, a rally was taken out allegedly in support of Amritpal Singh, after which police served notice to the organisers. They were asked to furnish their replies at Civil Lines police station.

Diler Singh Randhawa, a member of Baba Budha Saheb Committee, who was part of the rally, had told media persons that Amritpal Singh was innocent. He accused the Punjab government of falsely implicating him.

Diler Singh claimed Amritpal Singh was fighting against addiction and was uniting youth through religion.

However, a video of Diler Singh, which was shared by police on Thursday, showed him claiming he had been misreported and that some persons were spreading propaganda that the rally was taken out in support of Khalistan.

He said the rally was held against the “illegal” action being taken against Sikhs in Punjab.

“We live in Chhattisgarh and love the people of Chhattisgarh. We respect every religion. We don’t want Khalistan and have nothing to do with it. We only talk about Sikhism and we raise our voice for Sikhs. It is our responsibility and right to raise the issue of our community,” he added.

Police action began in Punjab last week against radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who heads Waaris Punjab De’ organisation, leading to several arrests, though he continues to remain elusive.

Raipur: A rally was taken out on Wednesday in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur by a group of people in support of absconding pro-Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh, leading the police to serve a notice to the organisers of the event which had no prior permission from authorities.

The rally, a foot march which started from Telibandha and comprised a small group of people visibly belonging to the Sikh community, culminated in front of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office located in nearby Panchsheel Nagar, police said.
The demonstrators also burnt an effigy of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a senior leader of the AAP, which rules the northern state.

After the police learnt about the rally, which was taken out without prior permission from authorities, a notice was issued to the persons who had organised the event, Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal told PTI.
He did not provide further details.

Talking to the media, a protester, who identified himself as Diler Singh, said Amritpal Singh was innocent and accused the Punjab government and security agencies of falsely implicating him.

Amritpal Singh was fighting against addiction and keeping youth away from it and also uniting them with religion, he said.
Asked about the rally, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel told reporters in Assembly premises that the local administration has been keeping an eye on the issue.

Talking to mediapersons, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Brijmohan Agrawal termed the incident as very unfortunate and said the rally was taken out at a time when the Assembly is in session in the state capital.

The Khalistani separatist, who heads the Waris Punjab De, is on the run since the Punjab police launched a massive manhunt for the outfit’s members. Amritpal Singh was on the radar of the Punjab police after he and his armed followers stormed a police station in Ajnala last month to release one of his aides.

Kejriwal, Mann to address AAP workers in Raipur on Sunday

Raipur: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal will be on a one-day visit to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Sunday to boost AAP’s preparations for the assembly elections in the state scheduled later this year, a party leader said.

Kejriwal will be accompanied by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the duo will address a party workers’ convention here.

The AAP had tried its luck for the first time in Chhattisgarh assembly polls in 2018 and fielded candidates in 85 of 90 seats but failed to achieve success. However, a landslide win in Punjab last year turbocharged its national ambitions.

Even though it won in just five constituencies despite running a high-decibel campaign in Gujarat, where the Bharatiya Janata Party won a record 156 seats, the party garnered about 13 per cent vote share. On Saturday, AAP also announced its plans to contest all 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, which too goes to polls this year.

The visit of the AAP top leadership and their interaction with party workers will further strengthen the preparations for the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Delhi minister and the party’s state election in-charge Gopal Rai told reporters here.

The two leaders will address the party workers’ convention in Jora ground in front of the Agriculture university around 3 pm on Sunday, he said.

Rai accused the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party that have governed the state since it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. The present Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government has completely failed on the law and order front, he claimed.

Highlighting several schemes of the Kejriwal government in New Delhi in just few years of its rule, Rai demanded to know why Chhattisgarh has failed to register such achievements in so many years.

He said the BJP and Congress have been seeking votes through false promises and populist announcements.
