Watch: Rahul Gandhi halts campaign speech on hearing sound of Azaan

    [ad_1]

Tumkur: Addressing a public meeting in Tumkuru, Karnataka, on Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stopped his speech after hearing the sound of Azaan (Muslim call to prayer).

This is not the first time that Rahul has halted his speech in an act of respect towards Azaan. In Amethi, in 2019, ahead of Lok Sabha Elections, Rahul halted his speech and waited for the Azaan to finish.

Lashing out at the BJP government in the southern state, the former Wayanad MP said, “For the last three years, BJP has only done corruption here. The people of Karnataka call this regime a “40 per cent government”, as they take a 40 per cent cut or commission from contractors.

    MS Education Academy

“The PM was also aware of this. So I would like to ask him why he didn’t take any action on it.”

Rahul was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha after being convicted and sentenced in connection with a criminal defamation case.

The case pertained to a comment he made using the surname ‘Modi’ at a campaign ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, in Kolar, Karnataka.

The Congress leader later moved a higher court in Surat, Gujarat, challenging his conviction for criminal defamation. But the Surat court upheld the lower court verdict.

The matter has now moved to the Gujarat High Court, which will take up the plea filed by the Congress leader for hearing on May 2.

Addressing a rally in Kolar in April 2019, Rahul, in a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

As per an earlier Supreme Court ruling, any MP or MLA is automatically disqualified if convicted and sentenced for two years or more.

Learn from Rahul, he’s ready to take bullet for nation: Priyanka to PM

    [ad_1]

Jamkhandi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Sunday referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks about verbal abuse, saying one has to take such attacks in their stride in public life and asked him to learn from Rahul Gandhi, who “is ready to take a bullet for the sake of the country”.

Targeting the Congress over its president Mallikarjun Kharge’s “venomous snake” barb at him, Modi on Saturday said till now the party and its leaders had hurled different types of abuses at him 91 times.

At a public meeting here in Bagalkote district, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, said, “At least they (91 abuses) are fitting on one page; if you look at the abuses by them to my family and if we start making a list, we will publish books after books about it.” “It is strange what I’m seeing for the past two-three days. I have seen many prime ministers — Indira Ji (Indira Gandhi), she took bullets for this country. I have seen Rajiv Gandhi. He sacrificed his life for this country. I have seen P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh working hard for this country,” she said.

“But he (Modi) is the first prime minister I have seen who comes before you and cries that he is being abused. Instead of listening to your grief, he is coming here and telling you his (problems).” Slamming the prime minister, she said someone in his office had made a list not about the problems of the people, but who had abused him multiple times.

“Have courage Modi ji. Learn from my brother Rahul Gandhi. My brother says he is ready to take a bullet for the sake of this country, not just abuse. My brother says he will stand for truth, whether you abuse, shoot a bullet or stab with a knife,” Priyanka Vadra said.

“Don’t fear Modi ji, this is public life and one has to bear such things. One needs to have courage and move forward,” she said, adding, “Now that I’m talking to you, let me tell you, if you learn one more thing it will be good: listen to the voice of the people.” Congress general secretary in-charge organization K C Venugopal also hit out at Prime Minister Modi over his remarks.

“Summary of PM’s speeches: No agenda. No vision. No promises were fulfilled. He has nothing positive to offer, he can only make baseless allegations,” he said on Twitter.

“PM Modi’s tired tirade against us shows they’ve lost the plot in Karnataka. Even he can sense a Congress wave this time,” he added.

Venugopal also said Priyanka Gandhi’s words are resonating across the nation.

“Modi ji, make a list of the problems that you have failed to solve, not of the attacks you face for your incompetence! Karnataka has made up their mind, and your drama is not going to save the BJP from defeat,” he said.

Ranchi: The High Court of Jharkhand on Friday extended the stay on a notice by a local judicial magistrate to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for personal appearance in a case filed against him for allegedly maligning BJP leader Amit Shah.

Gandhi has moved the high court praying for setting aside the criminal proceedings initiated against him by the magisterial court in Ranchi.

The high court on February 3 first put a stay on the notice for appearance of Rahul Gandhi before the court of the magistrate in Ranchi the next day.

He was ordered to appear before the magistrate in a complaint case filed against him by Navin Jha, a BJP member in Ranchi.

Jha in his petition has alleged that Gandhi had maligned BJP leader Amit Shah in a speech he made in Chaibasa before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Jha had filed the complaint on April 24, last year before the court of Ranchi Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate which was dismissed.

Thereafter, Jha filed a revision petition before the court of the Ranchi Judicial Commissioner which was allowed and the matter was remanded back to the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate.

‘How can anyone be so insensitive about suicide’: Rahul slams PM Modi over ‘joke’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the former’s “joke” on suicides while addressing a media conclave, labelling it “insensitive”.

Taking to Twitter, the former Wayanad MP said, “The Prime Minister cracked a joke on suicides. How can anyone be so insensitive about suicides? Government statistics show that in 2021, more than 1.64 lakh Indians died by suicide. Every day, 450 people are die by suicide in our country and this is a ‘joke’ for the Prime Minister.”

Speaking at a conclave of media network on Wednesday, PM Modi shared a joke about how a professor, reading the suicide note left by his daughter, realised how she got her spellings wrong despite his efforts to get her to spell correctly.

He cracked the “joke” after noting how the editor-in-chief of the media network had improved his Hindi speaking skills.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also hit out at PM Modi over his “joke”.

Taking to Twitter, she posted, “Depression and suicide, especially among the youth IS NOT a laughing matter. According to NCRB data, 164033 Indians committed suicide in 2021. Of which a huge percentage were below the age of 30. This is a tragedy, not a joke. The Prime Minister and those laughing heartily at his joke ought to educate themselves better and create awareness rather than ridicule mental health issues in this insensitive, morbid manner.”

  • ‘Modi surname’ case: Rahul moves Guj HC against sessions court verdict

‘Modi surname’ case: Rahul moves Guj HC against sessions court verdict

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has moved the Gujarat High Court challenging the Surat Sessions court verdict that rejected his plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case over the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

The hearing in the case is likely this week.

A Surat court on April 20 rejected Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case.

    MS Education Academy

The Congress had said that Rahul Gandhi will move the High Court against the verdict.

In his judgement, Additional sessions judge Robin P Mogera had cited Gandhi’s stature as an MP and former chief of the country’s second-largest political party and said he should have been more careful. He cited prima facie evidence and observations of the trial court and said it transpires that Gandhi made certain derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi apart from comparing people with the same surname with thieves.

Mogera said the surname of the complainant in the case, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Purnesh Modi, is also Modi. “…the complainant is [also an] ex-minister and involved in public life and such defamatory remarks would have certainly harmed his reputation and caused him pain and agony in society,” he said.

Mogera cited the disqualification criteria under the Representation of the People Act and added that removal or disqualification as MP could not be termed irreversible or irreparable loss or damage to Gandhi.

Earlier on April 3, the Sessions Court granted bail to the Congress leader.

While granting bail to the former MP, the court had issued notices to Purnesh Modi and the state government.

It heard both parties and then reserved the order for April 20.

Rahul Gandhi was a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad but was disqualified after a lower court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23 under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in a case filed by Purnesh Modi.

The case pertained to a remark Rahul Gandhi made using the surname ‘Modi’ while addressing a campaign event ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

At a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar in April 2019, Rahul, in a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”.

Following his conviction, Rahul was disqualified as an MP on March 24, as per a Supreme Court ruling in 2013. Under the ruling, any MP or MLA is automatically disqualified if convicted and sentenced to two years or more. (ANI)

Don’t give more than 40 seats to BJP: Rahul appeals to Karnataka voters

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday appealed to the voters of the poll-bound state of Karnataka to not give more than 40 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming May 10 assembly elections.

Addressing a public rally at Hangal town in Haveri district, the former Congress president requested the people to give at least 150 seats to Congress, “otherwise the BJP will again try to form a government”.

“Don’t give more than 40 seats to them,” he reiterated.

    MS Education Academy

Rahul Gandhi said even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks of corruption, “he shares the stage with corrupt leaders who take 40 per cent commission”.

“This shows that he doesn’t fight against corruption,” he said.

“Former chief minister Jagadish Shettar was denied a ticket by the BJP as he didn’t indulge in corruption, and as he did not take 40 per cent commission,” the Congress leader said.

He further said: “An MLA’s son was caught red-handed in the Mysore Sandal Soap scam. There were many other scams, like Police Sub-Inspector recruitment scam, Assistant professor scam, Assistant Engineer job scam, etc. BJP formed the previous government by ‘stealing’ MLAs with money. It was a stolen government.”

“BJP leaders talk of Basavanna ji, they bow down before him but work against his teachings. The BJP makes one community fight against another. BJP leaders don’t follow Basavanna ji’s ideals, they help 2-3 billionaires but don’t care about problems of farmers and labourers,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“BJP took 40 per cent commission from people in every contract in the last 5 years. Now, we (Congress) want to do something for the people,” he added.

He further said: “We make four promises to the poor people of Karnataka — ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme in which every woman head of a household will get Rs 2,000 a month; ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme in which 200 units of free electricity will be given per month to every family; ‘Anna Bhagya’ scheme in which 10 kg free rice will be given to BPL families per month, and ‘Yuva Nidhi’ scheme in which Rs 3,000 per month will be given to every graduate and Rs 1,500 per month will be given to every diploma holder. And this will be done on the very first day. They took a 40 per cent commission. We will fulfil these 4 promises.”

Relief for Rahul Gandhi from Patna HC in ‘Modi surname’ case

    [ad_1]

Patna: The Patna High Court on Monday accorded some relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case related to Modi surname.

The case was filed by BJP Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Modi in MP-MLA court of Patna, alleging that Gandhi humiliated the community having Modi surname in the country. Gandhi, during a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar in 2019, had said that all those with the Modi surname are thieves.

During the hearing in the MP-MLA court on April 12, it had directed Gandhi to appear physically on April 25. His lawyers then went to Patna High Court to challenge the decision.

Hearing the plea, Justice Sandeep Kumar stayed the decision of the MP-MLA court and posted the next hearing for May 15.

PM and BJP leaders speak about Basavanna, but don’t follow his teachings: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Vijayapura: Invoking 12th century social reformer Basavanna on his birth anniversary, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ruling BJP leaders only spoke about the Lingayat philosopher in their speeches but didn’t follow his teachings.

Calling the BJP government in Karnataka the “most corrupt in the country”, he declared that Congress would win 150 seats in Karnataka out of the total 224 in the May 10 Assembly polls, while the “40 per cent BJP government” would get only 40 seats. He was referring to complaints from contractors that the BJP government in the state sought had allegedly sought 40 per cent commission from them for government contracts.

“Basavanna had said don’t fear, speak out truth. If we see today, there is BJP and RSS’ ideology which is creating an atmosphere of hatred and violence in the country. Prime Minister and BJP leaders speak about Basavanna, but don’t follow his teachings,” Gandhi said.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a public meeting here, he said Basavanna had spoken about helping the weaker sections of society, he did not say “help the billionaires”.

“I have read about Basavanna’s teachings. He has nowhere written that ‘get the country’s wealth to Adani’. I spoke in Parliament house, I asked the Prime Minister as to what was his relationship with Adani? ‘The country’s entire wealth, ports and airports are being given to Adani; what’s your relationship?’,” he said.

Claiming that his microphone was first switched off in Parliament for asking those questions, Gandhi said his speech was then removed from Parliament records, and at the end he himself was removed from the Lok Sabha.

“They think that the truth can only be spoken in Lok Sabha, but it can be spoken anywhere, even here,” he said.

AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, Karnataka Congress campaign committee chief M B Patil and KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi, were among those present.

Gandhi was speaking after holding a massive road show from Shivaji Circle to Kanakadasa Circle, amid the sound of drum beats, in which large crowds of people took part.

Gandhi, earlier today began his two-day visit to poll-bound Karnataka from Kudala Sangama, where he offered obeisance to Basaveshwara, also known as Basavanna, on his birth anniversary, celebrated as Basava Jayanti. Basavanna is the founder of the Lingayat sect.

This visit of Gandhi is seen as an attempt by the Congress to bolster Lingayat outreach ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls. Lingayats are a dominant community constituting about 17 per cent of the State’s population, largely seen as the ruling BJP’s vote bank.

Sonia, Rahul will go to jail in National Herald case: Subramanian Swamy

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Union minister and BJP veteran Subramanian Swamy claimed on Saturday that the Congress top brass, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, will go to jail in the National Herald case.

The case was brought by Swamy, who accused the Gandhis of misusing party funds to buy a firm that published the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.

Attending a conclave of law students here, the ace lawyer-turned-politician said, “Today, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are out on bail. I used to say so many things to Rahul Gandhi but no one sent me to jail.”

    MS Education Academy

When asked if Nitish Kumar will be the prime ministerial candidate of the joint Opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Swami said: “Nitish Kumar is my good friend since the JP movement days, but he never said that he is a prime ministerial candidate. I will meet him today and will talk to him in this regard,” Swamy said.

When asked about India becoming the most populous country in the world and should there be a population control act, Swamy said that he does not believe in such an act, adding that population will be under control if economic growth takes place in the country.

“To reduce population growth, we have to increase economic growth 10 per cent per annum,” said Swamy.

When asked about slogans raised in Patna in favour of slain gangster Atiq Ahmad, Swamy said that India is a democratic country and anyone can say anything. However, those who are raising slogans in favour of Atiq Ahmad are only hurting themselves, he said.
