3rd Manipur BJP legislator quits govt post in a week

    [ad_1]

Imphal: Amidst continuing resentment among section of BJP MLAs against Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, P. Brojen Singh on Thursday became the third ruling party legislator has quit his government post, resigning as Chairman of the Manipur Development Society.

In his resignation letter to the Chief Minister, he said that he has stepped down on “epersonal grounds”.

Brojen Singh represents the Wangjing Tentha Assembly constituency in Thoubal district.

Earlier, BJP MLAs Thokchom Radheysham and Karam Shyam quit as Chief Minister’s advisor and the Chairman of the Manipur State Tourism Development Corporation on April 17 and April 13 respectively. Both had served as ministers in the first Biren Singh led government (2017-2022).

All the three MLAs claimed that they were not given due responsibility, funds and authority to function in their posts.

In a video clip, Shyam said: “A leader should be committed and sincere instead of threatening the followers. If such threats occurred frequently then an eruption of a revolt among the followers is a must… Manipur is becoming a corruption-free state but, in corruption, only the giver and the takers will know.”

Political and informed sources said that some more discontented BJP MLAs are likely to quit their respective government posts and are now lobbying with the central party leadership seeking their intervention in the affairs of Manipur.

The aggrieved legislators include a few Kuki MLAs, who are reportedly unhappy with an eviction drive targeting the community.

“Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is likely to go to New Delhi in a day or two for a possible reconciliation with the disgruntled BJP legislators with the intervention of the central leaders,” said a party leader, refusing to be named.

The Chief Minister is yet to respond to the political developments.

Winning 32 seats in the 60-member Assembly, the BJP government retained power for a second consecutive term in the last year polls. Various other parties are supporting the BJP government too.

Karnataka polls: Denied ticket, ex-deputy CM Laxman Savadi quits BJP

    [ad_1]

Belagavi: Former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi on Wednesday announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the BJP, a day after the ruling party denied him a ticket to contest in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli, who was backed by BJP leader and former Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, was given a ticket in Athani in Belagavi district.

Kumathalli was among the group of defectors, including Jarkiholi, who helped the BJP to bring down the Congress-JD(S) coalition and form its government under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa in 2019.

Savadi is a three-time MLA from Athani, but lost in the 2018 elections to Kumathalli (then in the Congress). “I have certainly made a decision. I have decided to resign from the primary membership of the party,” Savadi, a BJP MLC, said in a press conference.

Amid speculation that he may join the Congress, the 63-year-old added that he will make a “strong decision” on Thursday evening and start working on it from Friday.

Calling the people of Athani constituency and his supporters as his ‘real high command’, Savadi said they have directed him to resign from the party as well as the MLC position. “I am not ready to lose my ‘high command’. It’s my primary duty to follow their instructions,” the former Transport Minister said.

To a question, he said, “When I have decided to resign from my party then should I remain as the MLC? I am a man with self esteem.”

Reacting to Savadi’s announcement, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai asked him not to take any decision in a hurry. “I have spoken to Laxman Savadi. I have told him not to make a decision in a haste. I believe that Savadi has a very old relationship, an emotional one, with the BJP,” Bommai said.

He added that he is aware that he has been denied a ticket and that he and the party high command will speak to him. Bommai advised him to think in a calm state of mind so that he can realise that he has a bright future at the party. “The party has held his hand and will continue to do so in future as well. The party will honour him,” the Chief Minister said.

EU transport chief quits his post over free Qatar flights

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

BRUSSELS — A top European Union official is leaving his role in charge of transport policy, following POLITICO’s revelations that he accepted free flights on Qatar Airways while his team negotiated a major aviation deal with the Gulf state.

Henrik Hololei, director general of the European Commission’s transport department, faced an internal investigation into the flights, and whether he was right to clear himself of any conflict of interest.

On Wednesday, POLITICO revealed Hololei will leave his job as director general of the transport department, known in the Brussels lexicon as DG MOVE, and will become a political adviser with no management responsibility in DG INTPA, the Commission’s department in charge of international partnerships.

A spokesperson for the Commission later confirmed to reporters that Hololei would move to his new role on April 1.

Hololei himself announced his job switch in an email to staff. “Dear friends and colleagues,” Hololei wrote. “I wanted to let you know myself that Friday will be my last day at DG MOVE. I am sure that you have seen the recent press coverage of my participation in international conferences.

“This has become a distraction, and is preventing DG MOVE from moving forward with the files that are so important for the safer, more sustainable, smarter and more resilient transport system that Europe needs and deserves,” he said. “I have asked to be moved to another position, which I will take up at DG INTPA.”

POLITICO reported a month ago that Hololei flew business class for free on Qatar Airways nine times between 2015 and 2021, according to details obtained through freedom of information requests. Six of the free flights occurred while the market access agreement between the EU and Doha was being put together, and four of these were paid for by the government of Qatar or a group with links to Qatar.

The disclosures immediate triggered a storm of criticism, calls for an inquiry and demands to overhaul the rules. The Commission initially insisted Hololei had not broken any rules, but then later moved to tighten those same rules to make sure his behavior could not be repeated in future. An internal investigation is under way into the flights, after officials confirmed that Hololei himself had been the person who signed off on the ethical question of whether they represented a conflict of interest.

In recent days, POLITICO has reported on calls from within the Commission for Hololei to step aside.

The episode comes at a highly sensitive time for the EU. The Brussels institutions are already battling to save their reputation amid a corruption scandal involving allegations that Qatar and other foreign governments paid MEPs and others to do their bidding in the European Parliament.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the Commission, vowed in light of the so-called Qatargate scandal to crack down on corruption, throwing her weight behind the idea of an ethical oversight body that would be able to probe and penalize misdeeds across all EU institutions.

While the Parliament is undergoing reforms to avoid future corruption problems, the Commission and the Council of the EU have not been involved in the scandal and stopped short of announcing any internal changes as a result.

But the Hololei case, which centered on a senior official closely involved with a major transport deal crucial to the Gulf state, widened the focus of scrutiny to include the European Commission, which is in charge proposing EU legislation.

  • Rajagopalachari’s great-grandson CR Kesavan quits Congress

Rajagopalachari’s great-grandson CR Kesavan quits Congress

    [ad_1]

Chennai: CR Kesavan, great-grandson of India’s first Indian Governor-General, C Rajagopalachari, resigned from the Congress party on Thursday.

He said that he has not seen any vestiges of the values that made him work for the party with dedication for over two decades.

In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Kesavan shared his resignation letter on Twitter and said that he can no longer concur with “what the party symbolizes, stands for nor seeks to propagate”.

“I have not seen any vestiges of the values that made me work for the Party with dedication for over two decades. I can no longer in good conscience say that I concur with what the Party presently symbolizes, stands for nor seeks to propagate.’

This is why I had recently declined an organizational responsibility at the National Level and also refrained from participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he said.

Kesavan said that it is time for him to take a new path, however, added that he has not spoken to anybody so far and does not know “what will unfold next”.

“It is time for me to chart a new path and therefore I resign from the Primary Membership of the Congress Party with immediate effect. I have also submitted to the appropriate authority my resignation as a Trustee of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Charitable Trust.

There will be speculation of me going to another Party but to set the record straight, I have not spoken to anybody and honestly do not know what will unfold next,” he said.

The former Congress leader also thanked Sonia Gandhi for responsibilities and said that he has forged cherished friendships in the party that will remain.

“I will endeavour in good faith to resolutely serve our country through a political platform. It will be one where I can continue to steadfastly uphold the integrity and ideals of public life, instilled and defended by the founding fathers & mothers of our great nation and my great-grandfather C Rajagopalachari. Jai Hind!,” Kesavan said.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “Any Opposition political party should have a well-defined narrative and message for the people. They should ideally take up people-centric issues.

But unfortunately, over a period of time, I felt that the attitude and approach has hardly even been concrete, cogent, coherent or even consistent. Many-a-time, it has been very reactionary, cynical and unfortunate.”

“I have been a member of the Congress party for last 22 years, but unfortunately over a period of time, I feel in INC, the attitude and approach were neither constructive nor concrete. The values which I worked for, had changed,” he added.

Refusing to comment further on Congress, he said,”I don’t think I should comment about Congress once I’ve left the party. I am not comfortable with the way the politics was done in the Congress party and the right thing is to leave the party and that’s what I did today”.

His resignation comes within a month of the resignation by AK Antony’s son, Anil Antony who parted ways from the party after criticising the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
