  • Gindan Tamashe Asked Serious, Uncomfortable Questions on Existence, Identity

Gindan Tamashe Asked Serious, Uncomfortable Questions on Existence, Identity

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: Novelist and playwright Sohan Lal Koul has remained a popular choice for theatre because he has his hand on the pulse of society. In the last festival, at least three of his plays were staged in a single festival.

Koul’s Gindan Tamashe which was staged at Tagore Hall tackled the issues related to the issue of existence and identity. It asked very pertinent questions and provoked the audience to stay engaged.

It started in a set of the semi-lit enclosure with no doors and a single window. It was messy with three dustbins, some dirty clothes, tissue papers all over the floor and two beds on which two people were sleeping.

The beds exhibited a contrast. One had a white and blue bed sheet with faded colours. The pillow was stripped without any cover. The other bed was a shining, bright, and floral red colour bedsheet. The pillow was also covered with black velvet floral cover giving it an exquisite look. It suggests the two persons resting belonged to two different classes.

The man – who is later given the name Seen, wakes from the ‘inferior’ bed wakes up. He seems to be around 40-50 years old. His face shows confusion as if seeking answers to some of his frustrations. Finally, he breaks the silence and starts asking himself “Who am I?” and “Where am I?”

    Gindan Tamash 2

Soon, he sees the man on the other bed and assumes he would have answers to his questions. After several attempts, he wakes him up but he also has no answers to any of his queries. He – later given the name Sheen – was in his twenties. Both of them have perplexed thoughts. They ask each other questions about their past, existence, and the mistake that would have led them there, and the biggest mystery at that point was their identification.

The whole conversation between Seen and Sheen showed a serious debate over one’s existence in the world. Sheen claimed to be the master of Seen. He wanted to continue it the same way no matter if they remember anything or not. However, their debate nullified the difference in caste and status between them. Seen got offended initially when Sheen sat on his bed as he was poor apparently. With the progress in their discussion, they exchanged their seats subconsciously. It made one thing clear while they struggled to recall their identification, they forgot their class differences. From death to life, fiction to reality, punishment to freedom, they discussed all the possibilities of their identity. They yearned to get a second chance so that they live happily. This came after a series of suicidal thoughts exhibited by the duo in the frustration of knowing themselves and their identity.

Amid the arguments, they receive a letter from the window. They do not open it assuming that it might be from the angel of death. Again, a deep conversation about the letter takes place. Somehow, they decide to read it. The letter has been addressed to Gindan Tamashe (Toys). It was written by a child asking his toys to return home. The child had thrown them away earlier because of the pandemic. This led them to question themselves, once again, ‘are we just toys thrown in the garbage’?

Soon another character jumps into the sets. He is well-dressed but equally fearful. On asking why and how he is here, he responds by saying he is being chased by the angel of death and this – the set – is the safest place. He tells them the angel has spread posters everywhere about him and kept a reward on him. The two men who were already dominating the set started planning that they should inform the angel and claim the bounty.

They started executing the conspiracy for which they needed to open the window. As they opened it, a voice from the window tells them that opening the window was the condition for taking their life. Now that they have opened, their lives will be taken away. The voice ordered them to go back to their respective beds. Sheen requested Seen to exchange the beds as he wanted to give him comfort, which he did not get his whole life. They sleep on each other’s beds.

The next scene shows them as toys. A girl with her father comes to take them along with her. Her father gives her permission to take only one and she takes the one on the bed that appeared poor for the same reason. It conveyed that Sheen stayed as a toy and Seen was given a second chance. However, he wasn’t happy with the second chance now because he is all alone and cries till the end.

The play by the Young Dramatist Society was directed by Altaf Hussain and designed by Mushtaq Baqal. The overall supervision was done by Javid Gilani. Seen was played by Shahzad Shabir, and Sheen by Shahid Malik. The third-person man escaping from death was played by Imran Farooq, father and daughter were played by Tanveer Ahmed and Arbeen Jan respectively.

The costumes were provided by Shabir Ahmad Mir, lighting was designed by Balbir Singh, Music arrangement by Rasiq Khan, Production management by Javid Khan, stage management by Khursheed Ahmad Mir (Yamberzal Youth Club), Audio and video arrangement by Wasaaqat Mehraj. The coordinators were Shabir Ahmad Bhat and Latif Ahmad Shah.

Sohan Lal Koul, it may be recalled here is a popular playwright. A novelist and having a doctorate in Urdu, he has written several novels and plays. His novels include Waehshi Kaeth, Panien Gunah, Yele saer PaethGoav, Abysmal and Ded. He has also written a few plays. He has worked as a programme executive in Doordarshan. In a 13-day Annual Drama Festival at Tagore Hall in the year 2021, three of his plays were presented.

Congress questions absence of Deputy LS Speaker for past 4 yrs

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday questioned the non-appointment of a Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha, terming it “unconstitutional”.

“For the last 4 years there has been no Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha. This is unconstitutional. What a far cry from March 1956 when Nehru proposed the name of Sardar Hukam Singh an Opposition Akali Dal MP & a critic of Nehru for the post & he was unanimously elected”, he said in a tweet.

In the Lok Sabha, there has been a precedent of appointing a opposition MP as Deputy Speaker but in the current house, the post has been vacant since its constitution.

In the first Narendra Modi government, AIADMK’s M. Thambidurai was the Deputy Speaker while in the UPA regime, the post was held Akali Dal’s Charanjit Singh Atwal and then BJP’s Kariya Munda.

“He has denied meeting and document requests, skirted congressional oversight attempts, and refused to answer any of the serious questions we have asked,” Sanders said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Mr. Schultz has given us no choice, but to subpoena him.”

The Senate HELP Committee, which Sanders leads, will vote on the subpoena March 8.

It will also vote on whether to authorize an investigation into “major corporations’ labor law violations,” according to the statement from Sanders’ office.

The votes will be followed by a hearing on union organizing that will include testimony from several labor leaders, among them AFL-CIO President Liz Schuler.

Starbucks last month declined to have Schultz testify for a hearing scheduled March 9. Sanders and committee Democrats asked him to speak about the company’s compliance with federal labor law and its treatment of pro-union workers.

Starbucks offered its chief public affairs officer and executive vice president, AJ Jones, in lieu of Schultz, citing the CEO’s planned departure from the helm of the coffee chain.

ED questions producer Karim Morani in Sukesh Chandrashekhar case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday questioned Bollywood producer Karim Morani in connection with the Rs 200 crore money laundering case related to incarcerated conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar.

Karim Morani is known for films like ‘Ra. One’ and ‘Chennai Express’.

There were allegations that Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez was gifted a home by Sukesh Chandrashekhar, in which Morani’s role was being probed.

The Enforcement Directorate has recently filed its second supplementary chargesheet in which she had been named as an accused.

Jacqueline, and another Bollywood actress, Nora Fatehi, had recorded their statements as witnesses in the case.

Earlier, fixed deposits worth Rs 7.2 crore belonging to Fernandez were attached by the ED.

The ED termed these gifts and properties as proceeds of crime received by the actresses.

  • Will continue to ask questions about Adani till truth is out: Rahul

Will continue to ask questions about Adani till truth is out: Rahul

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the party will keep asking questions about Gautam Adani till the truth comes out, as he flayed BJP leaders for coming out in support of the industrialist in Parliament.

He also said the party should formulate a new plan to carry forward the “tapasya ” undertaken through the Bharat Jodo Yatra and that he along with the entire country will participate in it, indicating another such initiative.

Launching a strong attack on the government on the Adani issue, he charged that Adani was working against the country by cornering the entire wealth.

“When we asked in Parliament what is the prime minister’s relation with Adani our entire speech is expunged. We will ask in Parliament thousands of times till the truth of Adani ji is out, we will not stop,” he said at the 85th plenary session of the Congress here amid applause.

“I want to tell Adani that his company is ‘hurting’ the country and is ‘snatching the entire infrastructure of country,” the former Congress president charged.

“The battle for the country’s freedom was against one company as it had taken away all wealth and ports etc.,” he said.

“History is being repeated. This is work against the country and if that happens the entire Congress party will stand against it,” he said.

He also said that the party will continue to ask questions on the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Adani.

Hindenburg Research had made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the Adani Group.

The Adani Group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

  • ‘We need answers’: Oppn asks questions on LIC’s stock value slump in Adani Group

‘We need answers’: Oppn asks questions on LIC’s stock value slump in Adani Group

    [ad_1]

Members of several opposition parties have raised questions on the latest development of the value of stocks held by the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India in the embattled Adani group companies.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra in a tweet on Friday tagged FM Nirmala Sitharaman and asked the reasons behind why the centre is supporting Adani at the ‘cost of Indian public’.

“₹3200 cr loss in Adani shares for @LICIndiaForever so far.
    @nsitharaman
#IRDAI what pressure is there to support Adani at cost of Indian public?
    We need answers,” she tweeted.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala asked the Prime Minister to ‘break the silence’.

“The bitter truth is that the original deposit made by #LIC years ago in the shares of #Adani has also fallen.

LIC’s original holding of Adani shares – ₹ 36,474 crores.

On February 23, 2023 the price remained – ₹ 33242 cr. Still why not investigate Adani? PM break the silence!” he said in a series of tweets.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday targetted the BJP-led centre by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put common man’s savings at risk by investing LIC’s money in the Adani group of companies.

“Poora kuppa kar diye” as we say in Hyderabad. LIC is putting common man’s savings at risk; all for the sake of one man’s friendship.
@PMOIndia’s motto seems to be “profit before people,” he tweeted.

Kerala former finance minister Thomas Isaac said that the management of LIC has the dity to protect policy holders’ interests and not just Adanis’.

“Till when will LIC continue stand on the burning deck of Adani ship like a Casablanca? Reports say that LIC’s Adani Group investment has eroded to near cost now. LIC’s assets are public money, the management has the duty to protect policy holders interests and not just Advani’s,” he tweeted.

Supreme Court lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan asked the reason behind giving an extension to the LIC chairman when just in a span of one month after the Hindeburg expose, the value of Adani shares held by the LIC has fallen down.

“So, in just a month after the Hindenburg expose, the Value of Adani shares but by LIC from our money has fallen from 72000 Cr to 26000 Cr, more than 3250 Cr below its purchase price. And this LIC Chairman has been given extension. For putting more public money into Adani shares?” he tweeted.

The investments made in the Adani group companies by state-run insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) have turned negative as of closing on February 23, according to data analysed from stakes held by the insurance company as per the December shareholding pattern made available on the exchanges.

If some Adani stocks do not find support soon, LIC’s investment in the beleaguered Group, whose listed companies’ share prices have fallen by up to 80 percent, will almost certainly turn negative, as combined profit has now fallen to around Rs 3,000 crore from Rs 53,000 crore profit since the beginning of this year.

Following a sell-off in Adani stocks following the Hindenburg Research report, the combined market value of LIC’s investments in Adani Group was Rs 33,000 crore on February 23, down from nearly Rs 83,000 crore on December 31, 2022. When Hindenburg published its damning report on January 24, the LIC’s investment in Adani Cos was valued at Rs 81,000 crore.

This is primarily due to the significant sell-off in Adani Group stocks.

After the publication of the Hindenburg report, LIC declared on January 30 that at the end of December, it owned Rs 35,917 crores under equity and debt in Adani Group equities.

Since the US-based short seller Hindenburg released their research a month ago alleging accounting fraud and stock manipulation, the market value of the group’s 10 listed firms has fallen by $146 billion, or approximately 60 percent. Adani has refuted the charges.

With the decline on Thursday, LIC’s investments now have a negative value or a loss. It is assumed that after January 30, LIC has not acquired or disposed of any stock in the Group entities.

LIC owns between 1.28 percent and 9.14 percent of the shares in seven publicly traded Adani companies.

The value of LIC’s investment in Adani Ports (APSEZ), in which it owns more than 9 percent, has fallen from Rs 15,000 crore on January 24 to slightly less than Rs 11,000 crore on February 23. Similarly, the value of its 4.23 percent stake in Adani Enterprises has decreased from Rs 16,500 crore to Rs 6,660 crore over the same time period. LIC also owns slightly less than 6 percent of Adani Total Gas.

Since this Adani stock has dropped nearly 80 percent in the last month, LIC’s investment value has dropped from Rs 25,500 crore on January 24 to around Rs 5,200 crore.

LIC holds 3.65 percent of Adani Transmission and 1.28 percent of Adani Green. In one month, the shares of both companies fell 73 percent. The LIC’s investment in Adani Transmission is now valued at Rs 3,000 crore, while the investment in Adani Green is valued at around Rs 1,000 crore. The loss suffered by LIC in Ambuja Cement and ACC is not severe.

According to LIC, its total exposure in Adani Group companies amounts to 0.975 percent of its total assets under management (AUM) at book value.

Meanwhile, most Adani stocks closed with significant losses on Thursday. In one month, the Group’s market capitalisation has dropped by approximately Rs 12 lakh crore.

The stock market’s fallout has resulted in a sharp decline in Gautam Adani’s wealth, which now stands at $42.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index. He has dropped to 29th place on the world’s wealthiest list, down from second place last year.

Gautam Adani is the founder of the Ahmedabad-based conglomerate Adani Group. Infrastructure, commodities, power generation, transmission, real estate, and cement are all areas of interest for the group.

Calcutta HC questions irrational posting, distribution of Bengal teachers

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday questioned the “irrational” distribution of postings of teachers in different state-run schools in West Bengal where schools with adequate number of students have an inadequate number of teachers while those with fewer students have too many teachers.

During the course of hearing on a matter relating to teachers’ transfers, it came to the notice of Justice Biswajit Basu of Calcutta High court that a school in Kolkata- adjacent Howrah district having a total student strength of 13 has five teachers.

This is in sharp contrast to another school in the same district, where only eight teachers are catering to a total student strength of 550. This school is running without any proper teacher for crucial subjects like mathematics and geography.

Expressing regret over this irrational teacher to student ratio in schools, Justice Basu also questioned the requirement of running schools with such few numbers of students. He also questioned whether it is not better to withdraw the recognition of such schools and transfer the teachers posted there to schools without adequate teaching staff.

The counsel for the state education department said that there can be problems if such a step is taken since there can be political pressures in the matter.

“Forget about the political pressures. There is an urgent requirement of improving the academic grades of the schools. Why can’t we think of model schools? There are girls’ schools in the state which neither have adequate teachers nor security staff and not even proper toilets. How can one remain silent in such a situation?” Justice Basu questioned them.

Advising the state education system to introduce a proper and transparent transfer policy, Justice Basu said that teachers who refuse to abide by the transfer policy should be denied their salary from the next month.

“We will have to first think of the interest of the students. I know that changing the process is time consuming. But we will have to achieve it,” Justice Basu observed.

Learnt from PM the art of speaking for hours without answering questions: Stalin

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he had learnt from the latter the “art” of speaking for hours without answering any questions.

Stalin, while responding to a series of questions under the ‘Ungalil Oruvan’ programme lashed out at the Modi government for not responding to questions on the Adani-Hindenburg row and the BBC documentary on PM.

“There are several allegations against the BJP government and the PM, but he hasn’t responded to any of them. He himself is saying that the country’s people are like my shield. But people aren’t saying that. PM says mudslinging will help the Lotus bloom. Lotus grows only in water bodies not in places where there is water and mud. I learnt the art of speaking for hours without answering any questions,” Tamil Nadu CM said.

He further said that the PM’s address to the ‘Motion of Thanks’ was filled with “rhetoric.”

“PM’s address in the Parliament was full of rhetoric and it didn’t have any explanation on the BBC or the Adani issue. Sethusamudram project, NEET, state rights, interference of governors, not giving assent to the ban on online gambling bill, many such questions were asked by DMK MPs. There were no answers regarding this in the PM reply,” Stalin said.

“PM didn’t have anything to say for Tamil Nadu,” the Tamil Nadu chief minister said.

On the question of the government not agreeing to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into Hindenburg Research’s report against Adani Group, Stalin said, “Allegations against the Adani group are direct against the BJP government in nature.

Even the Supreme Court bench is hearing the case seriously therefore there should be a debate in parliament regarding this and theJPC probe needs to be ordered. The questions raised by Rahul Gandhi are valid. It is shocking that PM hasn’t answered these allegations.”

On the PM’s claim that the Opposition is united by Enforcement Directorate (ED), Stalin came down heavily on him and said that PM Modi himself has accepted that his government is doing “vendetta politics” against the opposition.

“This is PM’s confession for what ED is being used. For the first time in parliament, PM has accepted that he does vendetta politics against the opposition. This is not good for the country and democracy,’ Stalin said.
