Tim Scott’s Capitol Hill fans question his chances in 2024

    [ad_1]

“Tim Scott is going to have a very appealing story and message,” added the Florida Republican, whose 2016 campaign Scott endorsed. “But again, sometimes the environment determines whether that’s what people are looking for. And who knows where we’re going to be a year from now.”

Romney, the party’s 2012 nominee, was more pointed in his assessment of Scott: “The Trump lane, the anti-Trump lane, the more-than MAGA, I don’t think he fits in those things.”

The uncertainty over whether Scott can sell what Romney called “his own vision” sums up his unique place in the potential 2024 field: embodying optimism in a party more prone to elevating partisan fighters and grievance politics. Scott is the unquestionable primary frontrunner among fellow GOP senators who see him harkening back to the Ronald Reagan years — but the party’s base last responded to that tone in significant numbers when Reagan himself was on the ballot.

Still, Scott’s advisers bet that his hopeful authenticity will be his ticket to the Oval Office. Scott, the lone Black Republican in the Senate, talks often about his own life story, as well as his faith. But he’s also doing less and less unscripted talking as he edges closer to a White House campaign launch: Scott recently stopped doing hallway interviews with reporters, often a telling sign of a future presidential candidate looking to more tightly control his message.

While most of his fellow senators expect him to eventually jump in, Scott is keeping his plans close among a small circle of advisers. For now, his colleagues are hesitant to place him in a specific lane — even potential endorsers-in-waiting like Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz).

Schweikert praised Scott but said he isn’t sure if voters are looking for what the senator would offer: “Is there a constituency that wants someone conservative but that still believes in the country?” the Arizonan asked in an interview.

Trump’s indictment on charges related to a hush-money payment to a porn actress may yet shake up the GOP primary electorate, carving out space for a less polarizing contender. But for the moment, the Republican electorate is split between two men quite focused on grievance and culture wars: Trump and his chief potential primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

As Romney put it: “There are a number of voters who are tired of all the sturm und drang and the anger and the vituperative comments. On the other hand, the base is still with folks who are adept at those things.”

Scott would enter the race as a staunch conservative. The right-leaning group Heritage Action currently gives him an 84 percent on its scorecard, higher than the average GOP senator. He also has an “A” rating from Gun Owners of America, a 100 percent rating from National Right to Life and an “A” from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. He’s known as a defense hawk, most recently opposing a measure that cut off approval for the Iraq War. Scott also backed a Ukraine aid package in May.

While Scott supported bipartisan criminal justice reform, he’s voted against several major bipartisan bills in the past two years, including a $550 billion infrastructure package, a gun safety proposal, same-sex marriage protections and last year’s government funding deal.

The South Carolina Republican is perhaps best known for his work on opportunity zones, a bipartisan proposal included in Republicans’ 2017 tax cut law that offered tax breaks to wealthy individuals who invest in certain designated areas. The program was originally designed to boost low-income communities; Scott is expected to tout it, if he ends up running for president.

Although proponents of the program argue it brings an influx of private investment to economically distressed areas, Democrats and academics have dinged opportunity zones as mainly geared to help places that are already gentrifying.

In addition to opportunity zones, Scott’s a big proponent of expanding charter schools and giving parents public money to allow them to pay for tuition at private schools. He also played a central role in police reform negotiations with Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), which fell apart amid disagreements over qualified immunity and other policies. The two have also partnered on anti-lynching legislation, which became law last year, and a law that changed certain sentencing guidelines.

“We’ve worked to do everything from help expand sickle cell anemia funding to working on funding for [historically black colleges or universities],” Booker said. “Obviously, I’ve had frustrations, but in terms of just productivity he’s one of my more productive partners.”

Scott is also getting extra visibility of late as as the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee. As Congress scrutinizes the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, Scott hasn’t raced to propose any specific policy response.

Instead, he has focused on committee oversight efforts and pressing regulators on what went wrong. He’s blamed the bank’s downfall on the Federal Reserve for supervision lapses and the Biden administration for policies that may have contributed to inflation and rate hikes.

Scott has hosted so-called listening tours in Iowa and South Carolina as he prepares for a potential run, and he’s planning to hold a donor summit in Charleston in April. Even as some Republicans like fellow South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham say that Scott would be a strong vice presidential candidate, his advisers insist that’s not the end goal.

Should he enter the GOP presidential primary, it would be his toughest race to date. Scott’s closest Senate election was in 2016, when he won by about 24 points. Recent 2024 polls show him at only 1 or 2 percent, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s presidential bid is also a complicating factor. Yet Scott’s also proven a prolific fundraiser, with nearly $22 million cash on hand and strong support from Republican donors like Oracle’s Larry Ellison.

“I think they all got a slim chance,” said Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), who has endorsed Trump. “President Trump and DeSantis are the two guys, they would really have to run into a brick wall for somebody else to nudge them out. Now, anything can happen, but that’s the reason you run.”

Zachary Warmbrodt, Brian Faler, Michael Stratford and Natalie Allison contributed to this report.

SIT to question TSPSC Secretary, member in paper leak case today

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has summoned the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Secretary and a member of the constitutional body to appear before it on Saturday, in connection with the question paper leak case.

According to a senior police official on Friday, notices have been issued to the TSPSC Secretary and the member asking them to appear before the SIT for examination as witnesses today.

Meanwhile, Telangana Congress president A Revanth Reddy made a representation to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to probe into the money laundering angle in the leak of question papers of Group-I Preliminary examination and other exams conducted by TSPSC.

In a related development, YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president Y S Sharmila was prevented by the police from “besieging” the TSPSC office here in protest against the “callousness and delay in conducting a fair investigation to protect the big fish involved” in the case, a party release said.

A total of 15 people, including some employees of TSPSC, have been arrested since March 13 over their alleged involvement in the data breach — for stealing and leaking question papers of TSPSC’s Assistant Engineer (Civil) examination, among other exams.

The TSPSC had on March 15 cancelled the Assistant Engineers (AE) exam held on March 5, following allegations that the question paper had been leaked.

Amid protests by opposition parties and students’ groups over the issue, the Commission had cancelled the Group-I preliminary exam and two other tests as well.

On Tuesday, the TSPSC rescheduled the written examination for the post of Horticulture Officer from April 4 to June 17.

Asked only one question on Adani..: Rahul Gandhi on disqualification

    [ad_1]

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held his first news conference since his disqualification from the Lok Sabha on Saturday, saying he only raised one question about Adani in Parliament.

“My speech made in Parliament was expunged, and later I wrote a detailed reply to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Some ministers lied about me, that I sought help from foreign powers. But there is no such thing I have done. I will not stop asking questions, I will keep questioning the relationship between PM Modi and Adani,” he said.

Rahul said that this ‘whole drama’ was orchestrated to defend the Prime Minsiter from one simple question. “Who’s Rs 20,000 crore went to Adani’s shell companies? I am not scared of these threats, disqualifications or prison sentences,” he said.

  • Sack ministers, TSPSC board for question papers leak: Bhatti

Sack ministers, TSPSC board for question papers leak: Bhatti

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress Legislature Party leader Bhatti Vikarmarka on Saturday called for the resignation of all concerned ministers and the entire board of Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) from their posts immediately following the leakage of questions papers of recruitment exams conducted by the TSPSC. He also demanded that the TSPSC refund the fees paid by students who took the exams and compensate them for the mental agony caused by the leak.

Bhatti Vikramarka, who is conducting the People’s March in the Khanapur constituency of Adilabad district, as part of the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo’ Yatra, said that the ministers, TSPSC Chairman and all members must resign. Else, the President of India must intervene to ensure their removal. Further, he demanded that all officials and non-officials responsible for the leak of question papers must be punished severely.

“We achieved statehood for Telangana to cater to the needs of the unemployed youth and to provide them with good jobs. Unfortunately, BRS Govt is not doing that. The job notifications were issued after a long wait. However, the leakage of question papers has shattered the students and their dreams. The recent paper leak has only added to the disappointment felt by many young people in the state who have been struggling to find employment,” he said.

Bhatti said that the TSPSC has cancelled the exams whose papers were leaked and assured to re-conduct those exams. However, it also needs to take responsibility for the expenditure which students have incurred for writing those exams.

“The TSPSC has to return the money which candidates have spent towards fees, transportation and other preparations. They are unemployed youth. Each applicant must have spent thousands of rupees. Therefore, a minimum amount must be calculated and paid to all the candidates. The State Government or the TSPC should also pay compensation for the mental agony they have caused to the candidates and their families,” he demanded.

Bhatti also blamed the BRS govt for the suicide of a jobless youth Chitikena Naveen Kumar (32) of B Y Nagar in Sircilla town. He said that the State Government has failed to provide jobs to lakhs of youth which cause so much disappointment that they are resorting to extreme steps. He demanded that the government pay a compensation of Rs. 1 crore to the victim’s family. Further, he appealed to the youth not to get disheartened and take extreme steps. He said that the Congress party was returning to power soon and the next government would address the problem of unemployment.

The third day of the “People’s March” by Bhatti Vikramarka continued from Kondapur of Sirikonda Mandal in Khanapur Constituency of Adilabad District to Dasnapur of Indravelli Mandal and Keslapur Muthunur Indravelli Mandal centre on Saturday. People from several villagers joined the padayatra and briefed the CLP leader about their problems.

Bhatti Vikarmarka raised concerns about the lack of development in the tribal-dominated Khanapur constituency. He pointed out that several irrigation projects in the area, including the Chikuman and Triveni Sangam, had been left incomplete for nine years, wasting both time and money.

He said the Chikuman project, with an ayacut of 12,000 acres, was almost completed by the previous Congress regime. Similarly, the Triveni Sangam’s reservoir and other work were completed. He said even after nine years, the present BRS Govt failed to dig canals for these two projects.

The BRS Govt also failed to initiate Putti and Polimadugu projects in the Khanapur constituency. Consequently, all the Mandals in Khanapur have been facing a drought-like situation. He called on the BRS Govt to prioritize the completion of these projects without further. Stating that the Congress party was all set to return to power soon, he assured that the next Congress Govt would complete all four projects on a priority basis. He promised to bring back glory to the ITDA projects which are being crippled by the TRS government.

Bhatti Vikramarka visited Nagoba Temple, the tribal deity of Keslapur village, Indravelli Mandal. After performing special poojas in the temple, He received blessings in the main mandapam. On this occasion, he inquired about the problems with the villagers. He said that he was doing the padayatra to understand the problems being faced by the people so that they could be resolved after the Congress party comes to power.

Hyderabad: TSPSC question paper leak case transferred to SIT

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Public Service Commission exam’s paper leak case was transferred to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by city commissioner CV Anand on Tuesday,

As per the orders, the case will now directly be investigated under the direct supervision of the Additional CP Crimes and the SIT with immediate effect.

The Begum Bazar police on Tuesday produced all nine persons who are arrested in the Assistant Engineer (Civil) exam paper leak case conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commissioner on March 5.

The accused persons, 32-year-old P Praveen Kumar who worked as the Assistant Section Officer (ASO) at TSPSC, 35-year-old A Raja Sekhar, a network administrator at TSPSC, 35-year-old Renuka, a school teacher, 38-year-old L Dhakya, a technical assistant, 33-year-old K Rajeshwar, 28-year-old K Neelesh Nayak, 29-year-old P Gopal Nayak, 30-year-old K Srinivas and 31-year-old K Rajendra Nayak was arrested by the Begum Bazaar police with the assistance of Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force (Central) team on Monday.

Praveen, who works at TSPSC, contacted Raja Sekhar for the question paper of the Assistant Engineer (Civil) and both of them allegedly managed to get the paper from the confidential section of the TSPSC by hacking into a computer of the section officer in charge of custody of the question paper.

The TSPSC conducted the examination on March 5 for 833 vacancies of Assistant Engineer, Municipal Assistant Engineer, Technical Officer, and Junior Technical Officer in various engineering departments. A total of 55,000 candidates had written the exam.

As the two employees TSPSC allegedly copied folders containing the question papers of various exams from computers in the confidential section, the Commission already postponed recruitment examinations to posts of Town Planning Building Overseer scheduled on March 12 and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon scheduled to be held on March 15 and 16.

The Commission is scheduled to meet later in the day to take a decision on canceling the exam held on March 5 and conduct a re-exam.

“A few suspects were taken into custody for questioning in the case. Investigation is going on and details will emerge soon,” said DCP (south – west) Kiran Khare.
