Pune NCP workers, functionaries break down, urge Pawar to withdraw resignation

    [ad_1]

Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers and functionaries in Pune on Tuesday evening urged party president Sharad Pawar to immediately withdraw his resignation from the top post as they broke down on coming to know about his sudden announcement.

They said they will resign en masse if Pawar (82), whose hometown Baramati is located in Pune district in western Maharashtra, does not take back his resignation which was announced in Mumbai in the afternoon.

Pradeep Deshmukh, Pune NCP spokesperson, said after the news of Pawar’s resignation trickled in, hundreds of workers gathered at the party office in the city and could not stop their tears.

He said the NCP is like a family, where Pawar is a father figure and such leaders do not retire.

“If Pawar saheb does not reverse his decision, party workers and office-bearers will remain firm on their resignation,” Deshmukh said.

Meanwhile, Vitthal Maniyar, an aide of Pawar, said the former Union minister’s move to step down as president of the party he founded in 1999 was not abrupt or sudden.

“Pawar saheb might have thought deeply before coming to this decision. He must be thinking of handing over the responsibility to the next team and making them ready while he is still active,” he said.

“Though Pawar saheb has sought time (to rethink his resignation), I am sure it was a well though out decision and he will convince party leaders to accept it,” Maniyar stated.

“Saheb has not given up politics or social work. Whether he is party chief or not, he will continue to work with the same gusto with which he was working till now,” he said.

Asked about Pawar’s possible successor if he stays firm on his decision to quit the top party post, Maniyar said the veteran politician believes in democratic functioning of the party and any decision on the issue will be taken unanimously.

Maha: Four killed, 18 injured as truck rams into bus in Pune

    [ad_1]

Pune: Four people were killed and 18 others injured after a truck rammed into a bus in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday, police said.

The accident took place at around 2 am near a temple off the Mumbai-Bengaluru national highway, they said.

As the private passenger bus heading from Satara to Dombivli in Thane reached near the Swaminarayan temple, a truck coming from behind rammed into it, a police official said.

    MS Education Academy

Three bus passengers and the truck driver were killed, while 18 passengers received injuries, he said.

Prima facie, the truck driver lost control over the vehicle and as a result it hit the bus, the official said.

After being alerted, a medical emergency services team reached the spot and provided assistance to the victims.

Thirteen injured passengers were rushed to various hospitals in Pune, including the Navale Hospital, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Sassoon Hospital. The other injured passengers were admitted to nearby hospitals, officials said.

Pune Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Ayush Prasad said driver fatigue was a significant issue which needed to be addressed to prevent such accidents.

“It is essential that all citizens take necessary precautions when driving during night hours. Get adequate rest before your journey, take regular breaks and be mindful of other drivers on the road,” he said.

Prasad also stressed on the importance of reporting about rash and negligent driving to police.

“If you notice someone driving in a rash manner, maintain a safe distance and call the police to report it,” he added.

  • PFI link: NIA attaches 2 floors of Pune school building

PFI link: NIA attaches 2 floors of Pune school building

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The NIA on Sunday attached two floors of a school building in Pune where the Popular Front of India (PFI) had been organising camps to radicalise and indoctrinate Muslim youths and further train them for carrying out targeted killings and attacks against leaders and organisations of a particular community.

The 4th and 5th floors of the Blue Bell School Building were used by PFI to plan and prepare for carrying out terrorist activities with the aim of endangering the unity, integrity and security of India.

“PFI was recruiting innocent Muslim youth into the outfit at these premises, and also providing them with armed and unarmed training to eliminate/attack those opposed to the establishment of Islamic Rule in the country by 2047,” said the NIA.

    MS Education Academy

The official said that the two floors have been attached by the NIA as ‘proceeds of terrorism’ under the provisions of UAPA, in a case registered by the agency on April 13.

The NIA had filed a charge sheet on March 18, 2023, before the NIA Special Court, Delhi, against 20 accused, including the PFI, as an organisation.

The NIA had conducted a search of the two floors of the school premises on September 22, last year.

The agency had seized incriminating documents, which revealed that the said property was used by the accused, found to be associated with the PFI, for organising arms training for its cadres. The training camps served as platforms to incite innocent Muslim youths against the government, as well as leaders and organisations of a particular community. The camps were also used to inflame their passions and provoke them into embracing violent jihad, with the aim of committing terrorist activities.

The newly recruited PFI cadres were trained in the use of dangerous weapons, like knife, sickle etc, for attacking and murdering prominent leaders opposed to the outfit’s ideology of establishing an Islamic Rule in India.

The NIA investigations had earlier revealed that the accused persons were part of the criminal conspiracy to establish Caliphate and Islamic Rule in India by waging war against the country and toppling the democratically elected government. They were all identified as senior PFI cadres, accountants, authorised signatories of PFI’s bank accounts.

The NIA has been investigating the activities of the PFI, which was banned for five years, in September 2022 by the government.

Pune: Google company’s office in Maharashtra’s Pune city was briefly put on alert after it received a call about a bomb in the premises which later turned out to be a hoax, police said on Monday.

Mohsin Shaikh murder case: Pune court acquits Hindu outfit leader, 19 others

    [ad_1]

Pune: A sessions court has acquitted Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) leader Dhananjay Desai and 19 others in the June 2, 2014 murder of IT professional Mohsin Shaikh during the violence.

The Defence lawyer advocate Milind Pawar who was representing Dhananjay Desai said that all the accused were acquitted on Friday as the evidence on record was not strong enough.

“All 20 accused including Dhananjay Desai have been acquitted by the Session court today citing lack of evidence,” he said.

The defence lawyer further said that the prosecutor failed to prove the charge of “criminal conspiracy” on which police had arrested.

“We had argued in the court that Dhanajay who was allegedly part of a group who had beaten Shaikh was in Yerwada jail on the date of the incident in a different case, but Police have accused and arrested Dhanajay Desai on the charge of criminal conspiracy but Public Prosecutor failed to prove the case,” he further said, adding that the witnesses in the case failed to identify all the accused saying there were dark during the incident.

Mohsin Shaikh, 28-year-old was killed by a mob during the violence which had erupted at Unnatinagar and adjoining localities in Hadapsar over an objectionable post on social media.

The case dates back to June 2014 when Shaikh was returning home with a friend after offering evening prayers when he was randomly targeted and attacked by the mob and attacked with hockey sticks and cricket bats. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Police had booked 22 people, including two minors, in the case. The two minors were acquitted earlier. The remaining 20 accused were acquitted on Friday.

Additional sessions judge SB Salunke of the Pune session court pronounced the order.

Pune techie murder case: All accused including Hindu group leader acquitted

    [ad_1]

Pune: Nine years after the murder of an IT professional Mohsin Shaikh rocked Maharashtra, a Pune Sessions Court acquitted all 20 accused including the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) President Dhananjay Desai, here on Friday.

Reading out the verdict on Friday, Pune Additional Sessions Judge S.B. Salunkhe said that the evidence brought on record was not strong enough to convict Desai and other co-accused and the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts, lawyer Sudhir Shah said for one of the accused.

“It was a conspiracy to frame me and the police were misused… I was innocent,” Desai remarked briefly after the court verdict.

Shaikh, 28, had allegedly posted some objectionable content on social media pertaining to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the late Balasaheb Thackeray and others, which resulted in protests and violence in Unnatnagar and surroundings of Hadapsar, on June 2, 2014.

At that time, Shaikh, who hailed from Solapur, was returning home with his friend Riyaz A. Shendrare after offering prayers in a mosque and was targeted by some motorcycle-borne men armed with hockey sticks, cricket bats, stones and other weapons, who created mayhem in the vicinity, attacking people and properties.

Seriously hurt in the attack by a cricket bat blow, Shaikh died while under treatment in hospital, and his brother Mobin Shaikh lodged an FIR.

In his complaint, Mobin stated that the attackers intercepted his brother Mohsin and his friend Riyaz at Satav Plot around 9.15 p.m. as he sported a beard and wore a light-green Pathani suit.

After investigations, the Pune Police charged Desai of inciting passions through inflammatory speeches in January and March 2014 in Manjari and Lonikalbhor areas in Hadapsar.

A total of 21 people, including a minor, all said to be HRS activists, were nabbed in the case and all secured bail later, as their lawyers argued about political motives, with the state assembly elections which were due then.

Taking strong cognizance, the government of the then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had appointed eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, Special Public Prosecutor, but after objections from some groups, he finally opted out in May 2017.

Later, the government appointed the District Government Pleader Ujjwala Pawar as the SPP and after her retirement, Dhaigude Patil continued the matter.

The Sessions Court verdict on Friday has evoked sharp reactions from various political parties in the state.

Hindutva bodies organise morcha against ‘love Jihad’, illegal conversions in Pune

    [ad_1]

Pune: Various Hindutva bodies under the aegis of Sakal Hindu Samaj on Sunday took out a protest march in Maharashtra’s Pune city against “love jihad”, illegal conversions and cow slaughter.

The ‘Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha’ started at the historical Lal Mahal and culminated at the statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Deccan area, a distance of about 5 km.

The morcha organisers demanded the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, be declared as ‘Balidan Din’ (Martyr’s Day).

Sambhaji Maharaj was tortured to death on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb in 1689.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Shivendra Raje Bhosale, his counterpart from Hyderabad, T Raja Singh, and several political leaders joined the rally.

“Cases of love jihad, illegal conversions, cow slaughter etc have increased in the country. I demand the state government, as well as the Centre, bring a law against love Jihad,” Singh said.

“Love jihad” is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.

Singh said he is a follower of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

“Politicians should stop doing politics over Sambhaji Maharaj. Those who are doing politics on this topic, I ask people to boycott such leaders,” he said without taking any names.

Earlier this month, the BJP held protests across Maharashtra against Opposition leader Ajit Pawar, who belongs to NCP, over his remark on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Pawar had told the Legislative Assembly that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a “swarajya rakshak” and it is incorrect on part of some people to call him “dharmaveer”.

Shivendra Raje Bhosale, who represents the Satara assembly constituency, said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the pioneer of the Swarajya movement which also included protecting the religion. So far what we have read in the history is Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a dharmaveer”.
