  • FDIC, Wall Street scramble to pull together sale of First Republic Bank

FDIC, Wall Street scramble to pull together sale of First Republic Bank

    [ad_1]

    first republic bank 24744

Formal bids for First Republic — which has seen heavy deposit outflows and suffered massive share price declines in recent weeks — are due to the FDIC by the middle of the day on Sunday, according to the people, who requested anonymity to provide details of the discussions.

Federal regulators are hoping to put an end to turmoil in the banking industry following the stunning collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank last month. First Republic’s problems largely stemmed from the panic that engulfed those two banks amid a run on deposits.

First Republic, until this year one of the more envied banking franchises in America with over $200 billion in assets at the end of the first quarter, would be the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history after SVB and Washington Mutual. First Republic issued a grim earnings report last week that showed just how fast deposits were racing away, replaced by more expensive loans, an unsustainable formula that helped spark the latest stock price collapse.

While JPMorgan and PNC Financial expressed interest in a First Republic deal on Thursday, the bidding process was formally opened up on Friday, which could clear the way for another large bank to also make the winning offer, one person familiar with the process said.

It also remains possible that the FDIC could decide that the bids they receive are insufficient and no deal could emerge. That would mean First Republic opening for business again on Monday and trying to survive at least until regulators agree to a subsequent bid.

First Republic, a California-based institution with a strong track record and highly desirable customer base, has been foundering and bleeding deposits since the failure of SVB and Signature. Like those two, First Republic has a large number of customers with deposits that exceed the FDIC-guaranteed limit of $250,000 in their accounts.

When the government rescued SVB and Signature, regulators hoped that their decision to backstop all deposits at both banks would send a message to depositors that they shouldn’t worry about the money in their bank accounts.

That worked to a degree but it did not stop rapid deposit outflows from First Republic or end a share price rout that saw the bank’s stock slide another 40 percent on Friday to close at just $3.51, a nearly 98 percent drop from this time last year. The consensus among investors is that First Republic will continue to founder if not rescued by a combined public and private sector deal by the time markets open on Monday.

A group of big banks including JPMorgan and PNC tried to shore up First Republic last month by injecting $30 billion in deposits. It did not work.

JPMorgan, PNC and the FDIC all declined to comment on the talks.

UP Muslim body urges not to pull down loudspeakers that follow decibel limit

Lucknow: Ashfaq Saifi, the chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Minorities Commission, has written a letter to the state government, urging the latter to not bring down loudspeakers from mosques that follow the decibel limit.

In his letter ahead of Ramzan, he pointed out that there have been complaints that loudspeakers are being removed from mosques despite clerics adhering to the prescribed volume limits.

He has also asked the state to ensure civic amenities like water, electricity, and better approach roads around mosques during Ramzan.

Saifi further urged for better security around Eidgah and mosques and a better street-light arrangement.

He said that many people come to mosques to offer prayers as Taraweeh prayers are offered every night during Ramzan.

  • D.C. Council attempts to pull criminal code revisions before looming Senate vote

D.C. Council attempts to pull criminal code revisions before looming Senate vote

    [ad_1]

    biden dc laws 40806

Democratic D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson said at a press conference he had withdrawn the passed changes to D.C.’s criminal code. President Joe Biden said last week he would not veto a congressional resolution axing the updates, after the House passed a measure last month that would overturn the changes and the Senate is expected to clear that legislation this week. The measure only requires a simple Senate majority to pass, and a number of Democratic senators have indicated they would vote for it.

“It’s clear that Congress is intending to override that legislation,” Mendelson told reporters.

Whether he can do so is up for debate, however. Asked if the city council had withdrawn a bill before, Mendelson said “I have not found precedent” for doing so but argued there was no provision in the law against him pulling it back either.

“There’s no prohibition on what I’m doing,” he said.

It was not yet immediately clear if the D.C. Council could call back the legislation, which many in Congress have characterized as a “soft on crime” approach. Democratic D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had vetoed the bill, saying it would not make the city safer, but the council overrode that veto.

“The messaging got out of our control, and that the messaging got picked up by Republicans who wanted to make a campaign out of it for next year against Democrats,” Mendelson said.

The House on Feb. 9 voted 250-173 to overturn the move by D.C.’s government to revise its criminal code, with 31 House Democrats joining Republicans. A Senate vote is expected this week.

“If the Republicans want to proceed with a vote, it will be a hollow vote because it really isn’t there before them,” Mendelson argued.

Mendelson said the congressional action would not affect how D.C. approaches city issues.

“I don’t plan on doing a gut check. Let’s be clear, I don’t plan on installing a hotline to Republican leadership in the House in the Senate and calling them every week and asking for permission to move forward,” Mendelson said.

  • Tur dal prices to go up as production constraints pull down supplies

Tur dal prices to go up as production constraints pull down supplies

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Tur daal (lentil or toor) market is extremely tight due to insufficient supply; imported daal will arrive soon but will have little impact on the market. Because of this, retail prices per kilogram are moving upward and are quoted in the range of Rs 130 to Rs 140.

Whether the farmers are getting a good price or not, it is difficult to say, but due to the short supply of tur daal in the mandis, be it in Latur, Solapur in Maharashtra, Karnataka, or Andhra Pradesh, prices are above the minimum support price, said Nitinbhai Vani, production manager at Rentiofood.

According to his experience, if a miller wants to buy 12 trucks of tur, he can only buy one truck, giving a clear idea of the demand-supply gap. On Friday evening, the closing price of tur in mandis was quoted at Rs 8100 per quintal.

He says that this time, one shouldn’t be shocked if the price reaches or exceeds Rs 9000 per quintal. The Union government has set the MSP at Rs 6600 per quintal.

The reason for the shortage is that farmers are gradually shifting away from the cultivation of pulses in favour of high-value cash crops. The second reason, according to Vani, is that standing crops were ruined by unseasonal rains that occurred in Maharashtra and Karnataka in October and November.

The central government is well aware that production of tur daal is expected to be around 38.9 lakh metric tons this time, down from 43.4 lakh metric tons last year. That is why the Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh announced in January that to meet the domestic shortfall, the government will be importing 10 lakh metric tons of lentils.

Even after this assurance, the prices are constantly moving upwards.

Tur daal production will remain 9.8% lower than last year, according to early projections from the Union Agriculture Ministry. The crop is badly damaged in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

Imports from Sudan and Burma will begin soon, but they will have little impact on the domestic supply and prices because the quantity is in the thousands rather than lakhs of tons, according to Vrushil Patel, Director of Lakshmi Protin Products Pvt. Ltd.

As of today, the wholesale market for tur is on fire, and so the customers will have to pay more for tur dal this season, somewhere between Rs 130 and Rs 140 per kilogram, he added.

According to Patel’s ground information, this time the production of tur is comparatively low in Saurashtra, which is adding fuel to prices in the Gujarat market.

Recently, the Central government extended its zero tariff facility to imports of lentils from Australia, which will be applicable until March 2024. But the benefit of this facility will be felt only in July, when the imports start.

The government estimates 38 lakh metric tons of tur production, but the market is skeptical, and it is concerned that production will be 35 lakh metric tons this time, which is why some major players have cornered the tur stock and will exploit the market when prices reach their new peak, according to sources.

  • Mavericks, multiverses and martial arts: can the geeksphere pull off an Oscar triumph?

Mavericks, multiverses and martial arts: can the geeksphere pull off an Oscar triumph?

    [ad_1]

Awards season hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for geeky movies. Every now and then the Academy will pick out a film such as Joker, The Dark Knight or Black Panther for recognition but its top prizes are usually reserved for more esoteric fare. Not since Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2004 has a fantasy film swept the board at the Oscars – and even then, voters were arguably rewarding the trilogy rather than its final instalment.

This year looks a little different, however. And not least because so many critical darlings have struggled so badly at the box office. Usually, movies that pick up early awards-season buzz begin to motor pretty nicely at the box office too. But in the wake of Covid, and cinemas’ glacial march back to financial stability, a number of films have been forced to slink sheepishly into the VOD shadows with nobody willing to pay to see them on the big screen. The case of Todd Field’s Tár, for which Cate Blanchett remains in the running for best actress (but which has so far made just $6.3m at the global box office) is an obvious case in point.

It’s perhaps no shocker then, that movies such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick and even Avatar: The Way of Water are finding themselves pushed diffidently into the Oscars mix. After all, these are the films that people actually wanted to see in 2022. And if the Oscars isn’t at least partly about celebrating that then the Academy won’t have to worry about avoiding a repeat of last year’s mayhem, because sooner or later nobody will be watching anyway.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, with its joyful and beguiling spin on the same idea Marvel has been exploring in its cinematic “multiverse”, seems to have come along at the perfect time to mop up all those votes from Academy members looking to reward storytelling ingenuity, while also taking note of unexpectedly impressive box office clout. It is not often that a movie featuring alternate universes, kung fu and a Chinese-American owned laundromat is in the running for best picture, best actress (Michelle Yeoh), best supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan) and best director. Still, if the luminous Yeoh really does beat out Blanchett we might just have to pinch ourselves and wonder if, like Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, this is the one instance in six billion alternate realities where it ended up being so.

Likewise, Angela Bassett had looked an outside shot for best supporting actress for her striking turn as a grieving mother and ruler of the titular African kingdom in Wakanda Forever. Then she picked up the Golden Globe and Critics Choice gongs, and suddenly a win (or at least a nomination) doesn’t look beyond the bounds of possibility, even if these awards ceremonies are not always the best Oscars bellwethers. The Black Panther franchise’s remarkable journey over the past few years has been one of stupendous verve and resilience, and there will be more tears of joy on Oscars night if Bassett takes home the gong.

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.
All-American triumph? … Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick. Photograph: Entertainment Pictures/Alamy

Speaking of staying power, the Academy will no doubt be keen to reward James Cameron for defying the naysayers and delivering a return to Pandora that at least kept audiences happy (if not all the critics) with the mind-bogglingly weird and wonderful Avatar: The Way of Water. It’s probably a shoo-in for a best film nod and will no doubt win in various technical categories, allowing the Oscars to reward what looks likely to be the highest-grossing film of the post-pandemic era without having to hand it any of the gongs that really matter.

The year’s other major box office powerhouse is of course Top Gun: Maverick, a movie that defied the box-office downturn to get filmgoers of all ages back into multiplexes faster than an F-18 pilot. After all those years stuck in development hell, the surprising thing was how natural it felt to see Tom Cruise back on the big screen as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Joseph Kosinski’s laser-guided direction identified all the most vital sentimental touchstones for our boyish 60-year-old hero to connect with, from breaking bread with Val Kilmer’s Ice Man to making right with Miles Teller’s Rooster. Cruise is a decent bet for a best actor nod, with Kosinski an outside shot for best director, and the film a dead cert to make it onto the 10-strong list of nominees for best film.

It won’t win, because no movie that features a completely pointless “love interest” subplot that could have been excised from the movie deserves to win an Oscar. But we’ll all be glad to see Cruise in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles come March 12. Nothing says “Hollywood” like seeing the thrice-nominated actor on Oscars night, gracious in defeat and clearly pondering inwardly whether his time will ever come.
