AIMIM leader booked for offering namaz at public place

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The Lucknow police have registered a case against AIMIM leader Uzma Parveen for offering namaz at the Metro station in Hussainganj.

The matter came to light after the AIMIM leader posted a photograph on Twitter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Zone, Aparna Rajat Kaushik, said that Uzma had falsely shown the place of offering prayers to be Vidhan Bhawan which is misleading.

Last year, eight people were spotted offering namaz inside a prominent mall in a video that had gone viral on social media days after the inauguration of the international chain outlet.

Later, all of them were arrested.

Kaushik said that Uzma offered prayers at metro station and later tweeted that “one is free to offer prayers at any place as one is free to express his/her view”.

“A case under charges of IPC 153 A (promoting enmity), IPC 200 (giving false information), and IPC 283 (obstruction of public way) has been registered against Uzma,” said the DCP.

Don’t throw stones on trains: SCR appeals to public

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) on Tuesday appealed to the public not to indulge in anti-social activities such as stone pelting on trains after instances of the same on trains including Vande Bharat Express took place across different locations under its jurisdiction.

Some of the vulnerable sections (of stone pelting) have been Kazipet Khammam, Kazipet Bhongir and Eluru Rajahmundry, a press release from SCR said adding in recent times, Vande Bharat trains were targeted by miscreants and nine such incidents have been reported since January this year.

Stone pelting on trains is a criminal offence and stringent action will be taken against the perpetrators under Section 153 of the Railways Act, which is punishable with imprisonment which may extend up to 5 years, it said.

So far 39 offenders were arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) after several cases were registered.

Some of the stone pelting incidents also involved children aged between 6 and 17 years. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every parent, teacher, and elders in the society to counsel, educate and guide children to desist from such activities, the SCR said.

Such instances have not only led to precious damage of public property but also led to the rescheduling of the train, besides as many as five passengers were seriously injured as a result of being hit by stones, it said.

SCR General Manager Arun Kumar Jain appealed to the public to refrain from indulging in such unlawful activities which damage national property and causes serious injuries to passengers.

The Railway Protection Force is also undertaking several preventive measures including awareness campaigns and coordinating with Sarpanches of villages near tracks and making them village mitras’, SCR Chief Public Relations Officer Ch Rakesh said.

In addition, the staff have also been deployed in all stone pelting black spots, the release added.

  • Hyderabad: Naya Qila in Golconda fort accessible to public, says ASI

Hyderabad: Naya Qila in Golconda fort accessible to public, says ASI

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Close to a fortnight after a scuffle at the historic Naya Qila in the Golconda fort, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials here also clarified that the ancient site is fully open and accessible to the general public. This was made clear after it was found that security personnel of the Hyderabad Golf Club (HGC) have been wrongly preventing visitors from seeing parts of the Naya Qila like the Mustafa Khan mosque.

On March 14, a minor scuffle broke out in front of the Golconda Fort’s Naya Qila area in the early hours. A few drunk men attacked Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) guards and the golf course security personnel who were manning the entry gate. The assailants demanded entry into the Naya Qila area, and stabbed one of the guards, who was taken to a hospital nearby for treatment.

The ASI in fact posted its men round-the-clock after it found that the Hyderabad Golf Club began undertaking work to expand, without permission. The work was stopped by the ASI, after which it put up guards at night in Naya Qila as well. The HGC has occupied a majority of the Naya Qila area of Golconda fort, and has expanded to 18 holes over the years. The club however has no control in the areas which house some important historical sites like a 400-year-old Baobab tree.

    Naya Qila

In fact, the ASI is pretty clear about the fact that it is the only body that can decide to stop public access or give the same. Officials from ASI said that they had even put up a board outside Naya Qila stating that it os is open for the public to visit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday. The golf course in the area has its own security guards who man the entry into the site.

What has come to light is that the golf course personnel are not allowing the public to see everything at Naya Qila, and only let people visit the old Baobab tree at the site. The Naya Qila area has two mosques – the Mulla Khyali Masjid and Mustafa Khan Masjid – both of which predate Hyderabad. Aside from having a long periphery of the fort, it also has two huge bastions called Laila and Majnu.

Officials said that while the ASI accepted the golf course’s request to allow expansion, the landscaping work required for it would require permission from the ASI without fail. As none was taken, the ASI intervened and got it stopped. It may be noted that activists have from years questioned how ancient historic land of the Golconda fort was given to private organisations like the HGA.

    Naya Qila history

The Naya Qila area is in fact believed to be about over 400 years old, and is a part of the Golconda dynasty’s (which founded Hyderabad in 1591) remaining heritage in Hyderabad. The Naya Qila area, which is now cut-off from the Golconda fort due to local encroachments, was developed into an external fortification after the first Mughal attack (during the time of Emperor Shah Jahan) on Hyderabad in 1656.

It has two huge bastions called Laila and Majnu, of which Majnu continues to be in a state of disrepair after its collapse during monsoons in 2021. The ancient historic site was one of the few places which witnessed damage during heavy rains in 2021 in the fort. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which runs the historical site, was supposed to undertake repairs, but that has not happened so far as well.

Other parts of Naya Qila which are open to the public are the Baobab tree, which is believed to be over 400 years old (it is said to have been planted there by African friars), the Mustafa Khan Masjid (which was built in 1561 and predates Hyderabad), and the Mulla Khyali Masjid, which is believed to be named after the Deccan poet Mulla Khyali.

While the Majnu Bastion’s collapse is the latest instance of the city’s heritage getting damaged, in the past the HGA had also disallowed the general public from entering the Naya Qila area. However, according the ASI, there is no such restriction and the public is free to visit the place.

The Golconda Fort and the Charminar are two monuments that fall under the jurisdiction of the ASI, which works the central government, while all the other heritage sites like the Qutb Shahi Tombs come under the purview of the Archeology Department of Telangana government. Last year, a petition A petition was also created to save Naya Qila and the Golconda fort by local Hyderabadis.

    History of Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort’s origins are traced back to the 14th century when the Rajah of Warangal Deo Rai (under the Kakatiya Kingdom which ruled from Warangal) built a mud fort. It was taken over by the Bahmani Empire between 1358 and 1375. Later, it was developed into a full-fledged citadel by Sultan Quli who founded the Qutb Shahi kingdom in 1518 following the death of last sovereign of Bahmani Emperor Mahmud Shah.

Sultan Quli was a commander and later governor of Tilang (Telangana), under the Bahmani Empire (1347-1518), when its second capital was at Bidar. Sultan Quli, who was originally from Hamadan in Iran, rose to the level of Governor under the Bahmani Empire in early 16th century. At this point of time he was given the fort, around which he began developing a walled-city. It eventually came to be called Golconda Fort (name derived from Telugu Golla-conda, or shepherds hill).

The fort has 87 bastions, and eight gates, of which a few are not accessible to the general public as they are under the army control. It is believed to be one of the Deccan’s most impregnable forts, and had kept Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s army at bay for eight months until he succeeded and conquered Hyderabad in 1687.

Hyderabad was founded in the year 1591 by Mohd. Quli Qutb Shah, the grandson of Sultan Quli, with the Charminar being the city’s foundation. The city turned 429 years old in 2020.

  • House GOP ignored Capitol Police requests to review public Jan. 6 footage, lawyer says

House GOP ignored Capitol Police requests to review public Jan. 6 footage, lawyer says

    [ad_1]

    20210106 jan 6 francis 9

The department is typically loath to appear at odds with House leaders in particular, since it relies on the majority party for its budget and are charged with protecting its members.

Last month Republicans started requesting the same footage that the Jan. 6 select committee had access to. Those requests came first from Tim Monahan — who doubles as a top aide to Speaker Kevin McCarthy and as a staff director for the House Administration Committee — and then from Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), the chair of that panel, which has jurisdiction over Capitol security.

Within days, DiBiase indicated, the Capitol Police installed three terminals in a House office building to grant access to the footage. And DiBiase said he also provided four hard drives he had received from the Democratic-led Jan. 6 panel after it completed its work.

“At no time was I nor anyone else from the Capitol Police informed that anyone other than personnel from [the House Administration Committee] would be reviewing the camera footage,” DiBiase indicated.

Later last month, media reports indicated that McCarthy had granted access to the footage to Carlson’s producers. DiBiase said he later learned that “personnel from the Tucker Carlson Show were allowed to view whatever footage they wanted while supervised by staff from [the House Administration Committee] but that no footage had been physically turned over to the show.”

A week later, Monahan requested a list of Capitol Police cameras that were deemed “sensitive” because they include details about evacuation routes or locations such as intelligence committee facilities.

“We worked with the Capitol Police ahead of time to identify any security-sensitive footage and made sure it wasn’t released,” said Mark Bednar, a spokesperson for McCarthy. “In subsequent conversations, the USCP General Counsel confirmed that the department concluded there are no security concerns with what was released.”

A GOP committee aide, asked about the statements in the affidavit, noted that the Republicans asked the Capitol Police for a list of security sensitive cameras “to ensure anything on the list requested by Tucker was approved by USCP, which we did.”

The aide added that Capitol Police “told us they had no concern with what was released,” but didn’t immediately respond to follow up questions about if that comment came before or after the footage aired on Fox, and if it applied to both the clip Capitol Police was able to review and those that they say they weren’t.

DiBiase emphasized that in “numerous conversations” over “several weeks,” he informed Monahan that the Capitol Police wanted “to review every footage clip, whether it was on the Sensitive List or not, if it was going to be made public.” The Jan. 6 select committee had gone through that process with the department “in all cases,” DiBiase said, as had federal prosecutors pursuing cases against hundreds of Capitol riot defendants.

“Of the numerous clips shown during the Tucker Carlson show on March 6 and 7, 2023, I was shown only one clip before it aired, and that clip was from the Sensitive List,” he continued. “Since that clip was substantially similar to a clip used in the Impeachment Trial and was publicly available, I approved the use of the clip. The other approximately 40 clips, which were not from the Sensitive List, were never shown to me nor anyone else from the Capitol Police.”

DiBiase left some key details about his interactions with the House Administration Committee unanswered. For example, he didn’t indicate whether anyone on the panel had agreed to his requests for a preview of the footage.

Notably, DiBiase indicated that the House managers of Donald Trump’s impeachment trial after the Jan. 6 attack, who used about 15 Capitol security camera clips, did not preview them with the department before using them in the February 2021 proceedings. Those clips included “some from the Sensitive List.” The footnote caught the attention of Republicans who pointed to it on Friday, as an example of when Democrats had provided “zero consultation.”

Bednar also pointed to the impeachment trial footage and said House Republicans had taken more steps to protect security sensitive material than impeachment managers did.

Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger said in a statement earlier this month that he has little control over the footage once it’s provided to lawmakers.

Manger himself fiercely criticized Carlson and Fox News’ handling of the footage, saying it minimized the violence and chaos of Jan. 6 and portrayed Capitol Police officers’ actions in a “misleading” and “offensive” light.

DiBiase’s statement came in the case of William Pope, a Jan. 6 defendant who is representing himself and has moved to publicly release a trove of Jan. 6 security footage. Several other Jan. 6 defendants have cited Carlson’s access to the trove of footage in their own pending matters and said they intend to seek access. But, DiBiase noted in the affidavit, while Administration staff had said last week that no footage had been shown to any defendant or defense counsel, the Capitol Police had received additional requests to review the footage.

McCarthy’s decision to release the footage sparked weeks of questions for House Republicans. It’s also just the beginning of GOP lawmakers’ work to relitigate the attack, with the Administration Committee currently reviewing the previous Jan. 6 select committee’s work and promising to investigate Capitol security decisions leading up to the day. Meanwhile, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are planning a trip to visit the individuals jailed in connection with Jan. 6.

McCarthy has defended his decision to give access to the footage to Carlson, who has falsely portrayed the attack as nonviolent. The speaker and House Administration Committee members have pledged to release the footage more widely.

“I think putting it out all to the American public, you can see the truth, see exactly what transpired that day and everybody can have the exact same” access, McCarthy recently told reporters. “My intention is to release it to everyone.”
