Islamabad: Pakistan claimed that it received an indication from Saudi Arabia for additional loans that may help to break gridlock with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“We have received an indication from Saudi Arabia about getting something,” Dr Aisha Pasha, the Minister of State for Finance, said after attending a meeting of a parliamentary committee, without explaining the loan amount, The Express Tribune reported.

She also informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that some progress was made a day earlier on a friendly country deposit, saying, “we will soon reach the stage to sign the Staff-Level Agreement with the IMF”.

The IMF has asked Pakistan to arrange $6 billion in additional loans and at least half of those must be materialised before the board meeting.

The funds are needed to avoid sovereign default and also increasing the foreign exchange reserves to a level sufficient to back 1.7 months of imports, Express Tribune reported.

Pakistan had told the IMF that it would get $2 billion in additional loans from Saudi Arabia and $1 billion from the UAE to meet the additional financing requirements.

Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salim Al-Zaabi, Ambassador of the UAE also called on Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

Dar highlighted various avenues in which both countries could enhance their existing trade and investment relations.

Sources said the IMF wanted the $3 billion to be arranged from

Wellington: New Zealand will provide further humanitarian support for Turkey and Syria where devastating earthquakes earlier this month killed more than 57,300 people, Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said on Tuesday.

“The earthquakes on February 6 have had devastating consequences, with almost 18 million people affected. More than 53,000 people have died and tens of thousands more have been injured,” she said.

This represents the third tranche of humanitarian funding provided by the New Zealand government, totaling NZ$4 million ($2 millio) in order to support those in urgent need in the two heavily hit countries, Xinhua news agency quoted the Minister as saying.

The sum includes NZ$1.4 million to the UN Population Fund to deliver essential healthcare services for expectant and new mothers, and protection services for vulnerable women and girls in Turkey, she said.

New Zealand is also contributing NZ$2.1 million for Unicef’s operations in Syria to provide education, water and sanitation, medical care and protection services for children and their families, said the Foreign Minister.

A total of NZ$500,000 in funding will also be made available to accredited New Zealand non-governmental organisations working with their local partners in Turkey to deliver essential relief, she said.

The funding was pledged at an International Donors’ Conference in support of the two quake-hit nations in Brussels on Monday, hosted by the European Commission, the government of Sweden and Turkish authorities.

Tuesday’s announcement brings New Zealand’s total humanitarian funding for the response to NZ$8.5 million.

  • Emergence of third force will provide advantage to NDA: Congress

Emergence of third force will provide advantage to NDA: Congress

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: The Congress should go all out to identify, mobilise and align like-minded secular forces as well as include secular regional outfits who agree with its ideology, the party said in its draft political resolution on Saturday, asserting that the emergence of any third force will provide advantage to the NDA.

The resolution was being deliberated on the second day of the party’s three-day 85th plenary session here and was expected to be passed by the evening.

The draft was prepared by the political affairs sub-group for the plenary and it is being headed by former Union minister M Veerappa Moily and former Maharashtra chief minister ashok Chavan.

“Unity of secular and socialist forces will be the hallmark of the future of the Congress party. The Congress should go all out to identify, mobilise and align like-minded secular forces,” the draft resolution said.

“We should include secular regional forces who agree with our ideology. There is an urgent need for a united opposition to take on the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) on common ideological grounds. Emergence of any third force will provide advantage to the BJP/NDA,” it said.

The draft resolution asserted that the Congress will prepare a vision document for 2024, following a largest-ever mass contact programme, which will encompass issues of unemployment, eradication of poverty, inflation, women empowerment, job creation and national security.

“Specially, the Congress must reverse the current regressive path of growth without improving the lives of the poorest. Our growth mantra must have a human touch, creating livelihoods and employment opportunities,” the draft resolution said.

It said the Congress will infuse new blood in leadership roles without creating new fault lines and cementing its ideological moorings.

“Congress will create a clear-cut role model and will catapult the party back to power both at the state and centre,” it added.

Addressing the 85th plenary session of the Congress, party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said his party is willing to forge a viable alternative by aligning with like-minded parties in order to get rid of the “anti-people” BJP government in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and is ready to make any sacrifice required to achieve the goal.

In the prevailing difficult circumstances, the Congress is the only party that can provide capable and decisive leadership to the country, he asserted.

From 2004 to 2014, the Congress-led alliance with like-minded parties effectively served the people of the country, Kharge noted.

“We once again look forward to forging a viable alternative by aligning with like-minded parties to defeat the anti-people and undemocratic BJP government,” he said.

“We are ready to strive for the welfare of the people of our country and (will make) whatever sacrifices that are required,” Kharge said.

Kharge also said the goal for the upcoming state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls is clear.

The Congress president’s remarks assume significance as they come amid talk of forging opposition unity.

The Congress’ vehement criticism of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has drawn a sharp response from the party, signalling cracks in opposition ranks.

According to other clauses of the draft political resolution, the Congress promised that it will pass a new law to prevent and punish hate crimes.

The draft resolution also talked about the “threat to the judiciary”.

“The judiciary is constantly threatened by direct and indirect measures which create apprehensions in their mind. Unfortunately, the law minister himself is leading the blatant attack on the judiciary. Congress promises that the independence and integrity of the judiciary will be maintained and protected at all costs,” the draft resolution said.

It also alleged that free discussions and debate in Parliament and legislative assemblies have been curtailed.

“Expunging the truth and suppressing the voices of the opposition is becoming the order of the day. This is a blatant subversion of Article 105 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech

  • Kashmiri bat manufacturing company to provide platform to talented players to reach international level

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Anantnag, Feb 24: For the very first time, a known cricket manufacturing company from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has taken an initiative to provide a platform to talented cricketers of Kashmir to reach international level.

Gr8 Sports, a bat manufacturing company from Halmulla Anantnag, has signed MoU with various international cricket boards and leagues to vanguard the talent from Kashmir.

Owner of the company Fawzul Kabiir while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that he has witnessed that cricket players in Kashmir are very much talented but they lack the platform to reach to the mega stages.

“We have taken up initiative to provide them a platform so that they get an opportunity to reach to international level and prove their mettle,” he said.

Any professional cricketer below 36 years of age can make videos of his signature shots and upload them while tagging Gr8 Sports on social media, he said, adding that every video of batting, bowling or wicket keeping will be analyzed by experts and management companies and shortlist players.

Kabiir said that every year shortlisted players will undergo trials before selection committee members of international cricket boards and International league franchisees, who will select them for different leagues.

“Every year around 100 batsmen, 100 bowlers and around 50 wicket keepers will be shortlisted who will have to undergo trials and can reach international level as selection will be done on spot in Kashmir,” he said.

“Our aim behind this initiative is just to promote local talent and we have signed MoU with at least 10 cricket playing nations and if our players will be able to showcase talent, they can reach international leagues like Carabian League, BPL,” he added.

Let players play their normal cricket and make videos and upload them while tagging us and Mobica-our talent management company will access and on that basis screening will be done and players will be shortlisted.

After shortlisting, international coaches of franchises and international boards will be brought here one by one and will select players from shortlists on the basis of data base uploaded and trials, he said.

He said that even children have exposure to leather ball cricket and he is hopeful that local cricket players will be able to showcase their talent anywhere in the world.

“It will be a big opportunity for talented youth to make their career besides that it will help in keeping youth away from social evils and generate income as well,” he said.

When asked why he is sponsoring players, he said that mostly sponsored players are being used as advertising agents only and they don’t get proper opportunity as we want to make stars not marketing agents.

“The Company has also decided to start a monthly show that will be live on social media platforms where queries of players will be answered besides that international players will guide talented players as well,” he said.

“We want to provide talented players every opportunity to groom them into stars and this program will be started from March 2023,” he said.

  • Minister threatens NLSIU to provide Karnataka locals 25% reservation

Minister threatens NLSIU to provide Karnataka locals 25% reservation

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Law Minister J.C. Madhu Swamy said on Tuesday that if the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru refuses to provide 25 percent reservation for Kannadiga students, the BJP government in the state would initiate action against it.

“If the university fails to provide reservation lawfully, we will not hesitate to take action,” he reiterated on the floor of the Assembly on Tuesday.

BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar had raised the question in this regard.

“The stand of the state is very clear on this issue. We are committed to providing reservation to our children,” Madhu Swamy said.

“The matter is coming up before the Supreme Court on February 24 and we are hopeful that we will get justice. The Supreme Court has also expressed the same feelings which we have. NLSIU was questioned as to why reservation is not given in Karnataka when it has been provided in other states,” he said.

Karnataka has appointed Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta to argue its case.

“If reservation is not provided, initiating legal action would become inevitable. Let’s wait. As we are reposing faith in the judiciary, let us not go for harsh action at this stage,” Madhu Swamy ssaid.

Suresh Kumar said that the NLSIU is not providing reservation to Kannadiga students, flouting the law.

“The college management has not followed the law for two years. The state had given land to establish the university. There is no gratitude from the university towards the state. The funds to the university should be stopped,” Suresh Kumar demanded.

The institution was given 23 acres of land and Rs 22 crore funds by the Karnataka government.

“But our children are not getting seats there,” Suresh Kumar said.

Former Speaker and BJP MLA K.G. Bopaiah said the university is behaving as if it doesn’t have any accountability towards the Karnataka government.

Congress MLA Krishna Bhyregowda said that the matter is very sensitive as the Chief Justice of India is the President of the administrative board of NLSIU.
