Telangana: Last warning given to protesting Junior Panchayat Secretaries

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Principal secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania on Monday cautioned Junior Panchayat Secretaries (JPS), who have formed a union and went on strike since April 28 demanding regularization, to end their protest and rejoin duties. They have been asked to rejoin their work by May 9 5 p.m.

In a press release, Sandeep Kumar said that the union’s protest was a violation of their agreement bond which is signed by all Junior Panchayat Secretaries before joining service.

Kumar said that JPS employees who have signed the agreement had accepted the agreements. “As Junior Secretary, they will not have any claim or right to be appointed on a regular basis and such appointment will be without prejudice to the regular appointments that may be made in future.”

“The regularisation of service of any contract employee can’t be decided for all, however, it will be subject to the assessment and evaluation according to their performance by a committee appointed by the government, only those employees will be regularised whose performance is found satisfactory,” the principal secretary added.

Sandeep Kumar clarified that JPS employees have terminated all their rights to continue in service despite signing an agreement.  He went on to say that the warning issued would be the last chance for the protesting employees, who are on strike, to rejoin their work.

“In case, those who fail to join their duty by 5 pm on May 9th, their services will be terminated permanently,” he added.

IYC holds candle-light march in support of protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Friday held a candle-light march here in support of the protesting wrestlers at the Jantar Mantar, criticising the BJP-led government at the Centre.

“Beti Bachao slogan is just hypocrisy. The behaviour with the women players of the country at Jantar Mantar is very shameful. In fact, the BJP has never shied away from torturing the daughters of India,” IYC president Srinivas B.V. said.

Hundreds of IYC activists took out a candle march to demand justice for the pride of the country’s women wrestlers. However, Delhi Police stopped them near their office.

IYC national in-charge and AICC joint secretary Krishna Allavaru also slammed the government over the alleged manhandling of the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar.

“What has happened to women sportspersons at Jantar Mantar is sad. The country is deeply saddened to see the tears of women sportspersons who have brought medals for the country and their families with their hard work and dedication. BJP has a history of protecting perpetrators and questioning victims,” he said.

Allavaru also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi clicks photographs when these wrestlers win medals “but now he is forcing them to cry”.

“For the last 14 days, the daughters of the country have been crying and suffering, but the government is silent.”

He further said that the Congress stands firmly with the daughters of the country and will stand with them till the last breath.

He also demanded BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), be arrested by the Delhi Police so that a fair investigation could be conducted.

Scuffle breaks out between protesting wrestlers, cops at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A scuffle allegedly broke out between the wrestlers staging a protest at Jantar Mantar here and some police personnel, leading to head injuries to a couple of protesters.

Three people, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, were detained following the incident, police said.

In a video being circulated on social media platforms, some of the protesters can be heard accusing a police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol.

The accused policeman is seen sitting in the video, while the protesters allege that his colleagues were mute spectators.

Deputy Commissioner Police (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal said Bharti came to the protest site with folding beds without permission. On being asked about the beds, his supporters became aggressive and tried to get the beds from a truck. Subsequently, a minor altercation took place following which Bharti, along with two others, was detained, the officer added.

Another senior police officer said, “There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them. They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up.”

Former wrestler Rajveer told PTI, “The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us.”

“They started hitting us. Bajrang Punia’s brother-in-law Dushyant and Rahul suffered head injuries. The police did not even let doctors reach the site. Even the women constables were misbehaving with us,” he said.

“I was abused and pushed around by policemen. Where are the women police personnel?” asked Phogat.

Punia’s wife Sangeeta also claimed that she was pushed around by policemen.

Punia has called for farmers and their leaders to assemble at the protest site on Thursday morning.

“Delhi Police ki gundagardi ab nahi chalegi (Delhi Police’s high-handedness will not work anymore). We will call farmers to assemble here in numbers. We will not tolerate it anymore. Tractors or trolleys. whatever you get, just come here,” he said.

The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23. They have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Uttar Pradesh.

The protesters have been demanding criminal action against Singh for the alleged sexual harassment and intimidation of seven female wrestlers, one of whom is a minor.

The Delhi Police filed two FIRs against the WFI president on Friday on the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by the wrestlers.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be providing the wrestlers staging a protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding the arrest of the wrestling federation chief over sexual harassment charges, with cots in view of the ongoing rainy spell in Delhi.

Rains lashed the national capital on Wednesday, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting vehicular movement on key roads.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 20.9 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, and a maximum temperature of 30.6 degrees Celsius, nine notches below normal.

Senior AAP leader and MLA Somnath Bharti said, “On the instructions of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, we have decided to send foldable cots to the protest site. We hope that this small help will make this tough time a little bit easier for the wrestlers.” The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23. They have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Uttar Pradesh.

The Delhi Police filed two FIRs against the WFI president on Friday on allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by the wrestlers. Delhi Police yet to record statement of women wrestlers protesting against WFI chief

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police is yet to record the statement of protesting women wrestlers even after three days since Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was booked over alleged sexual harassment of the players.

Police are likely to question Singh in connection with the FIRs registered against him, but no official notice has been served to him yet, officials said on Monday, adding that police are yet to record the statement of women wrestlers.

The Delhi Police on Sunday provided security to the female wrestlers, including a minor, who levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Singh.

    MS Education Academy

The Supreme Court had directed the Delhi Police to provide security to the grapplers following their complaints against Singh, who has been booked under sections of outraging the modesty of a woman, stalking, and Section 10 of the POCSO Act in two FIRs.

The BJP MP, who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers and a minor girl, has denied the charges against him.

A group of top wrestlers, who first levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Singh in January, had resumed their sit-in on April 23 at the Jantar Mantar here to demand that the findings of the Centre-appointed panel that probed the charges be made public.

The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor that has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning outraging modesty. The second FIR has been registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints by adult complainants under relevant IPC sections on outraging of modesty.

WFI sexual harassment: KTR extends support to protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao on Friday took to social media to announce his support for the wrestler’s protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The minister gave a call to stand with the top Indian wrestlers who are protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman and other coaches, accusing them of sexually abusing female wrestlers.

The minister said in a tweet, “We celebrated when these Olympic champions brought Glory to our Nation. Now let’s stand with them and express our solidarity as they fight for justice”.

    MS Education Academy

Seven female wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment case against federation leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Central Delhi’s Connaught Place police station.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that the FIR would be registered on Friday.

However, they continued their agitation and demanded that the BJP MP be removed from all the positions he holds.

Vinesh Phogat said it took Delhi Police six days to file an FIR and they don’t trust the probe agency.

“It (Police) might file a loose FIR. We we will see, observe then take a decision (on calling off protest). He should be behind the bars and removed from all the posts he holds, otherwise he will try to influence the investigation,” World Championship medallist Vinesh said.

KTR said in the tweet, “The serious sexual harassment allegations against the chief of wrestling federation should be probed impartially and justice delivered”.

Oppn calls out PT Usha over her remarks on protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several opposition leaders hit out at Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha on Friday for criticising a protest by wrestlers in Delhi, alleging she has become a “political mouthpiece”.

The wrestlers have launched a second round of protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment and intimidation.

Usha, a Rajya Sabha member, has condemned the protest, saying the grapplers lacked discipline in hitting the street in support of their demand. She also said their action has tarnished the image of India.

    MS Education Academy

Responding to Usha, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said ignoring their pleas tarnishes the country’s image, not their protest.

“Dear @PTUshaOfficial, it is does not become you to disparage the justified protests of your fellow sportspersons in the face of repeated & wanton sexual harassment. Their standing up for their rights does not ‘tarnish the image of the nation’. Ignoring their concerns – instead of hearing them out, investigating them & taking just action – does,” he said.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam blamed the sprinter’s “newly found” political friends for her stand on the issue.

“Usha, with utmost respect and affection, I have to say, your comments on the suffering wrestlers should have been avoided. The country and the sport lovers wish to see you as a spirited sports person. Alas! Your newly found friends want to make you their political mouthpiece,” Viswam said.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra also attributed the former sportswoman’s stand to her Rajya Sabha seat.

“Wrestlers protesting on streets tarnishing India’s image says @PTUshaOfficial. So ruling party MP chairing WFI for years accused of molestation & abuse of power against who @DelhiPolice refuses to lodge FIR in spite of SC order makes India smell of roses, does it?” tweeted Moitra.

Congress MP Jebi Mather said a person like P T Usha who is held in high esteem by every Indian, especially sports enthusiasts, stooping to the level of demeaning the wrestlers, is quite unwarranted and unexpected of her.

“By degrading the wrestlers, P T Usha has failed in the exercise of her duties as the President of Indian Olympic Association,” she said.

“Instead of standing by the side of her fellow sportspersons who are fighting for justice in the context of repeated instances of sexual harassment, Usha is playing petty politics. She owes an apology to the wrestlers. While the matter is sub-judice, it is quite suspicious that she has taken a stand against the wrestlers,” Mather said.

“The fact that Usha, who expressed solidarity with the wrestlers while they first raised the complaint in January, has now changed her stance raises questions regarding her intention,” she said.

Top wrestlers are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding that the government make public the findings of the oversight panel that investigated sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief.

Rajya Sabha member Mather said that being the president of the Indian Olympic Association, Usha should make efforts to ensure unity and equality among the sportspersons, not to create division.

She should make earnest efforts in resolving the issue at the earliest, the Congress MP added.

Mob sets police station on fire protesting teen girl’s death in Bengal

    [ad_1]

Kaliaganj: Miscreants set fire to Kaliaganj police station in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Tuesday protesting the death of a teenage girl whose body was found in a canal last week.

People allegedly from the Adivasi and Rajbangshi communities organised a “Thana gherao” programme on Tuesday afternoon protesting against alleged “police inaction” in the case and claiming that the girl had been raped and murdered.

Preliminary post-mortem of the girl’s body, however, indicated she had not been raped.

    MS Education Academy

The mob broke barricades and pelted the police station with stones, an officer said.

The police personnel started a baton charge but could not stop the mob from entering the police station and setting it on fire, he said.

One vehicle was also set ablaze.

“We are trying to bring the situation under control,” the police officer told PTI.

On April 21, the body of the 17-year-old girl was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj. Alleging that she was raped and killed, locals had put up road blockades by burning tyres and set several shops on fire.

The incident triggered a war of words between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP ahead of the panchayat election in the state.

The TMC accused the saffron party of trying to “politicise and communalise” the matter, as BJP demanded a CBI probe and promised legal aid to the girl’s family.

Four police officers, all in the rank of Assistant Sub Inspectors, were Monday suspended for allegedly dragging the body of the girl on the road while removing it from the spot where it was found, amid protests by people.

A video purportedly showing the incident has gone viral.
