Tenth week in a row, thousands of Israelis protest against judicial reforms

    [ad_1]

For the tenth consecutive week, thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday against the judicial reforms that the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to implement.

The protestors accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his far-right extremist views, including racism and trying to establish a dictatorship.

According to Israel TV Channel 12, Tel Aviv saw 1,45,000 protesters while Haifa and Beersheba registered 50,000 and 10,000 respectively. Three demonstrators were arrested by the Tel Aviv police.

In the early morning, car convoys of protestors drove to Ben Gurion Airport to block land roads for Netanyahu who arrived in Rome by helicopter.

“It’s not a judicial reform. It’s a revolution that (is) making Israel go to full dictatorship and I want Israel to stay a democracy for my kids,” Tamir Guytsabri, 58, who was one of the protestors.

Why are Israelis protesting against judicial reforms?

Netanyahu was elected in November 2022 as the Prime Minister for the sixth time. His cabinet is considered the most extreme, nationalistic, and exclusionary government in Israel’s history.

From the beginning, the Israeli government sought to make significant changes to the Supreme Court that would remove its independence and power to control the Parliament.

Several proposed plans would limit the court’s ability to overturn laws it deems unconstitutional, allowing a simple majority of the Knesset to overturn its decisions. It also gives state lawmakers and appointees effective power over the nine-person committee that appoints judges and removes key officials from the attorney general. These and other changes undermine the power of an independent judiciary in an otherwise unchecked parliamentary system.

The issue has created significant rifts in Israeli society prompting even reservists, the backbone of the Israeli army, to threaten to withdraw from service.

  • Gehlot meets war widows from across Raj as protest by Pulwama widows simmers

Gehlot meets war widows from across Raj as protest by Pulwama widows simmers

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday met a delegation of war widows from across the state who supported the current policies of his government for the families of the martyrs, amid a simmering protest by the widows of three CRPF jawans killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.

The Pulwama widows have been protesting since February 28, demanding a change in rules so that their relatives and not just children can get government jobs on compassionate grounds. Their other demands include construction of roads and installation of statues of the martyrs in their villages. Early Friday, they were removed by Rajasthan police from the protest site outside Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s residence in Jaipur.

Without naming Gehlot, Pilot told reporters in Tonk that the issue should be heard keeping ego aside.

“I believe we can fulfil demands like laying roads, erecting houses and installing statues. A message should not go out that we are not ready to listen to the demands of the widows of the martyrs,” he added.

On Saturday, Gehlot met a group of war widows from across the state who supported the current policies of the Rajasthan government for them, an official statement said. It said this group of widows expressed the view that demonstrating on “unfair demands” affect the image of all war widows.

“Salute to war widows. Salute to the sacrifice,” Gehlot tweeted after meeting the war widows at his residence.

“Expressing their feelings, the widows of the martyrs gave their support to the current policies of the state government. It is not appropriate to give the jobs and rights of war widows and their children to someone else. The state government will always stand with the martyrs and their families,” the chief minister said.

Gehlot said the state government has the highest honour for martyrs and war widows.

“The dependents of the martyrs have been employed by the state government in government services as per the rules. The rules will be followed in future too. No injustice will be allowed to happen to the dependents of the martyrs,” he added.

Gehlot said the Kargil package was implemented for the martyrs during his previous tenure.

Under the package, Rs 25 lakh for the families of martyrs, 25 bighas of land, accommodation from the housing board and an additional Rs 25 lakh for those not taking the accommodation, and jobs for war widows or their children are provided, he said.

“There is also a provision of fixed deposit of Rs 5 lakh for the parents of the martyr. In addition, provisions were also done to install statues of martyrs and to name any one public place after the name of martyrs,” he said.

“There should be no politicisation of matters related to martyrs. There is no provision in the rules to give job to any other family member other than the war widows or children. This demand is unjustified and due to this the widows may have to face undue family and social pressure in future,” the chief minister said.

The war widows expressed satisfaction over the package being given by the state government to the families of the martyrs. They said the job should be given only to the war widows or their children.

The statement said martyr Havaldar Ramesh Kumar Dagar’s wife Kusum said the demand for giving compensatory government job to the brother-in-law is not according to the rules.

“This demand of the (Pulwama) widows sitting on dharna is illegitimate. Other war widows also have to bear the consequences of demanding jobs for other family members instead of the martyr’s children. Demonstrations on unfair demands affect the image of all war widows,” she said.

Another war widow, Krishna Jat, wife of martyr Havaldar Shyam Sunder Jat, said only the children of martyrs have the right to get jobs given as compensation by the state government.

“It is wrong for war widows to agitate to get jobs for brother-in-law, or other family members. The stand of the state government in this matter is sensitive and correct,” she said.

Priyanka Kanwar, wife of martyr Lance Naik Madan Singh, and Namita Ramawat, wife of martyr Havaldar Hoshiar Singh, also termed the demonstration wrong and against the rules, the statement said.

Pulwama widows protest: Raj CM accuses BJP of politicising issue

    [ad_1]

Following Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirodi Lal Meena’s arrest on Friday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the former of politicizing the issue regarding the demands brought up by widows of Pulwama attack martyrs.

On Saturday BJP workers thronged Ghelot’s residence. They threw stones at police barricades which were retaliated by lathi-charge by the cops.

The Pulwama widows protests have been going on for the last two weeks. The widows are demanding that the State grant government jobs to extended family members along with immediate ones on the basis of compassionate grounds.

Their other demands include construction of roads and installation of statues of the martyrs in their villages.

When asked about the lathicharge, senior BJP leader Sachin Pilot the issue needs to be dealt with sensitivity.

“There should not be a false message going outside that the government is not ready to listen to the widows of our martyrs. Demands such as construction of roads, erecting houses, and installing statues are doable. However, it is another thing that we accept all their demands,” Pilot said.

On Friday morning, the widows were shifted to nearby hospitals when they started protesting in front of Pilot’s residence in Jaipur.

Aurangabad: A case was registered on Friday against Aurangabad Lok Sabha MP Imtiaz Jaleel and more than 1,500 persons in connection with a protest against the renaming of the Marathwada city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a police official said.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MP had led a candle march from the collectorate to Jubilee Park here on Thursday night and had addressed the protesters.

The candle march was taken out despite permission being denied to head of the “anti renaming committee” Ayyub Jahagirdar, the official said.

“Jaleel, Jahagirdar and more than 1,500 protesters have been booked for unlawful assembly under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Police Act,” the official informed.

The Maharashtra government last month issued an order to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv after getting permission to do so from the Centre.

State BJP Working President said, “The saffron party workers first fought for the resignation of Sisodia and today the results are in front of everyone. Now the next number is of Arvind Kejriwal because Kejriwal himself is the kingpin and mastermind of this entire liquor scam.”

Sachdeva added: “Kejriwal was saying that he would not celebrate Holi. How could Kejriwal apply the colour of Holi on the face which he hides behind the black money of liquor?”

He added: “There was talk of free education and health but Kejriwal gave “buy one get one free liquor bottle scheme” to the people of Delhi. A conspiracy was hatched to make the youth intoxicated.”

  • Farmers’ protest foiled handover of India’s foodgrain logistics to Adani Group: Cong

Farmers’ protest foiled handover of India’s foodgrain logistics to Adani Group: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi; Congress on Thursday alleged that farm laws, which were withdrawn by the Centre in 2021, were brought in to give benefits to the Adani group.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, who has started a series of questions, said “It’s related to the hard work the government has put into handing over India’s foodgrain logistics to the Adani Group, a conspiracy that it seems was only temporarily foiled by the farmer agitation of 2020-21 that forced you to withdraw the black farm laws.”

He said, “one of the biggest beneficiaries of the farm laws would have been Adani Agri Logistics which has become the major beneficiary of the Food Corporation of India’s silo contracts, the most recent award being one to set up 3.5 lakh metric tonnes of storage in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.”

He alleged that Adani Farm-Pik was allowed to build a near-monopoly on apple procurement in Himachal Pradesh.

“Is India’s public sector, painstakingly built over the past 70 years, now reduced to being a vehicle for the enrichment of your corporate friends,” he asked.

He said the Supreme Court observed that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had supported the Central warehousing corporation stand while the Ministry of Commerce and Industry had aided Adani’s bid to take control of two major CWC warehouses near Mundra port by not supporting the denotification of the warehouses as part of the Adani SEZ.

“The entire country knows that the motivation behind your ill-conceived farm laws was to hand over India’s agricultural logistics to a few of your close corporate cronies,” Ramesh added.

Single-lab Technicians, Allied Employees At GMC Srinagar Protest Over Non Disbursal of Salaries

    [ad_1]

    Rehan Qayoom Mir

Srinagar, Mar 9 (GNS): The Single lab technicians and employees of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar protested on Thursday against the hospital administration for withholding their salaries for last many months now.

The angry protesters chanted slogans against the hospital authorities for their lackadaisical approach towards their genuine grievance. “If everyone’s salary is being released, why are we being made to suffer?”, questioned the protesters, as per GNS.

They claimed that the hospital authorities were holding their salaries purportedly due to the fact that they have not submitted time bond orders. “The protesters further asked why the hospital authorities did not check their records, as they too are supposed to have a copy of the (bond order.)”

The protesters also pointed out that, many among them, had lost all their documents, including service books, in the 2014 flood. “Why is it that the GMC authority don’t have the records?”

“It has been fifty contact months for us and we have still not received our salary. We have also met with the hospital authorities on multiple occasions, but they have told go to LG Administration”, they said adding “We do not have any approach and it is the duty of the hospital authorities to provide us with our salaries” the protesters added.

“The government started a portal in the name of JKHRM and they uploaded all their documents there. Unfortunately, they were not able to upload their promotion order copies on the same, as the hospital authorities have not provided them with any such documents,” said a protester.

When contacted, Prof. Masood Tanvir, Principal GMC told GNS that they have taken the matter into consideration for an early redressal. (GNS)
