If the vote is successful, it would mark an unprecedented wielding of power by the Republicans who control both chambers of the Legislature. Expelling members typically occurs when individuals are accused of crimes or ethics violations, a rare step that tends to follow an internal investigation that can span months or years and features bipartisan agreement.
In this case, however, Republicans angered by the trio’s actions moved swiftly and unilaterally.
“They have gone to extreme consequences for three members who spoke without permission,” said Johnson in an interview with POLITICO.
Removing Johnson and her colleagues would set a “terrible precedent,” she said. “You could be expelled for literally anything, the smallest infraction possible.”
The drama has skyrocketed the three to the national stage as Democrats have rallied around them and tried to steer that attention toward enacting gun reform laws in Tennessee and beyond. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that Tennessee Republicans are “shrugging in the face of yet another school shooting.”

88 trains cancelled, hundreds of vehicles stranded amid protest for ST status

Jhargram: Eighty-eight trains were cancelled, and hundreds of vehicles remained stranded as different organisations of the Kurmi community continued their rail and road blockade in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday, demanding ST status, officials said.
The protest started at 6 am on Tuesday with the blockade of the old National Highway 6, which connects Kolkata to Mumbai, at Khemasuli in Kharagpur local police station area by Kurmi Samaj West Bengal, they said.
Another organisation of the community, Adivasi Kurmi Samaj, joined the protest on Wednesday, blocking the railway tracks at Khemasuli station in the Kharagpur-Tatanagar section and Kustaur station in the Adra-Chandil section in Purulia district, they added.

Among the trains cancelled on Thursday were Howrah-Pune Duronto Express, Howrah-Jagdalpur Express, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, Howrah-Ahmedabad Express, Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Howrah-Ranchi Express, Shalimar-LTT Express, Howrah-Mumbai CSMT Mail and Santragachi-Rani Kamlapati Humsafar Express, the South Eastern Railway said in a statement.
Puri-New Delhi Express, Mumbai-CSTM-Howrah Duronto Express and Jagdalpur-Howrah Express were also cancelled, it said.
Fifty nine express, and passenger trains scheduled for Friday and four trains scheduled for Saturday have also been cancelled, the press statement said.
On Wednesday, 46 express and passenger trains were cancelled due to the agitation.
“As a result of the agitation, a total of 223 trains have been cancelled since Wednesday,” it added. Eight trains have been short-terminated.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on NH 6, triggering massive traffic snarls even on the adjoining roads in Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts.
Officials said some vehicles were being diverted through Balibhasha in Jhargram to bypass the blockade.
Drivers of the stranded vehicles said they were facing food and water scarcity.
The organisation of the Kurmi community, which is classified as OBC at present, are protesting in different districts of the state, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Purulia, Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur.
The Paschim Medinipur district administration officials held a meeting with the agitating organisations on Wednesday but ‘failed’ to reach a settlement.
“The blockade will continue until our demands are met,” said Tapas Mahato, a Kurmi Samaj West Bengal leader.

MP: Rightwing activists hold protest after IMC action at Indore temple

Indore: A day after Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) removed illegal construction from the Beleshwar Jhulelal Mahadev Temple where 36 people were after the roof of a stepwell collapsed on Thursday last, a group of Rightwing activists on Tuesday late night reached Dhakkanwala Kuan in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore and demanded the removal of ‘Dargah’ from the area.
On being stopped by the police from reaching the spot, they sat on the road and started raising slogans against the administration.
Indore’s additional collector Ajay Dev Sharma said, “The administration with help of civic body has launched a drive and clearing illegal constructions in and around water bodies including Bawadis and wells. It’s not about any particular religion.”

“We have already removed illegal constructions from Dhakkanwala Kuan area, and the drive will continue in future as well,” said Sharma.
“The protesters were also informed about the action, after which they called off their protest,” he added.
The protestors however claimed there is a dargah in the area and it has been built on a well and demanded that it should be removed.
“We have withdrawn our protest after talks with the leaders of our organization and the district administration. But if the encroachment is not removed, we will remove the illegal encroachments ourselves,” Rajesh Binjwe, one of the protestors said.
Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) filled the stepwell of the temple with building materials where 36 people died last week after its floor collapsed and also demolished the illegal structure of the temple on Monday.

The stepwell floor collapse incident occurred at Beleshwar Jhulelal Mahadev Temple located in Patel Nagar in the city on Thursday (March 30). A ‘Hawan Puja’ was going on in view of the Ram Navami festival in the temple at the time of the incident.
Around 200 Municipal Corporation employees, officers and police force were present on the spot to remove the illegal structure of the temple constructed by encroaching over the garden land of Sneh Nagar locality. The police barricaded the entire area before the JCBs, bulldozers and dumpers reached the spot.
Notably, Bajrang Dal workers had come to protest for the removal of the temple construction, but the police stopped them at the spot. Some local people also reached there to protest but the police convinced them too and drew them back.

Tennessee GOP members move to oust 3 Dems after gun protest

Republican Reps. Bud Hulsey, Gino Bulso, and Andrew Farmer filed the resolutions. They successfully requested Monday that the House expedite the process and vote on the resolutions Thursday.
Despite support from the Republican supermajority, their requests sparked outrage among supporters watching in the gallery. Their loud jeers led House Speaker Cameron Sexton to demand that they be removed by state troopers. Also during the turmoil, several lawmakers engaged in a confrontation on the House floor.
Jones later accused another member of stealing his phone and trying to “incite a riot with his fellow members.”
Sexton deemed Jones out of order and cut off Jones’ microphone.
Hundreds of protesters packed the Capitol last week calling for the Republican-led Statehouse to pass gun control measures in response to the Nashville school shooting that resulted in the deaths of six people. As the chants echoed throughout the Capitol, Jones, Johnson and Pearson approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn.
As the three shared the bullhorn and cheered on the crowd, Sexton, a Republican, quickly called for a recess. He later vowed the three would face consequences. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Karen Camper described their actions as “good trouble,” a reference to the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis’ guiding principal.
By Monday, Sexton confirmed that the three lawmakers had been stripped of their committee assignments and said more punishments could be on the way. A few hours later, House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison referred to Jones as the “former representative” during the evening session.
Pearson and Jones are both freshman lawmakers. Johnson has served in the House since 2019. All three have been highly critical of the Republican supermajority. Jones was temporarily banned from the Tennessee Capitol in 2019 after throwing a cup of liquid at former House Speaker Glen Casada and other lawmakers while protesting the bust of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest inside the Capitol.

Expelling lawmakers is an extraordinary action inside the Tennessee Capitol. Just two other House members have ever been ousted from the chamber since the Civil War.

Talks between striking doctors, Rajasthan govt fail; protest to continue

Jaipur: Talks between striking doctors and the Rajasthan government over the protest against the Right to Health Bill remained inconclusive on Monday.
The six-member delegation of doctors led by secretary of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Society, Vijay Kapoor met the state government representatives to resolve the impasse over the Bill and ensure appropriate medical care to the people.
The meeting, however, failed to reach a concrete solution to the issue.

Private doctors in Rajasthan are demanding withdrawal of the Bill passed in the state assembly on March 28. According to the bill, every resident of the state will have the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” in any “public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres”.
Kapoor, in a statement, said the statewide complete medical bandh in protest against the Bill continued for the 16th day on Monday. A large number of doctors along with representatives of other social organisations reached the JMA auditorium. Supporting the movement, various social organisations urged the government to accept the just demands of the doctors and end this impasse immediately, he said.
He said the bandh continued in all districts of the state, adding that Dr Sohan Kumawat, who is sitting on a fast unto death in Sirohi, reached Jaipur on the fifth day of his fast.
Elaborating further on the support garnered by the protest, the Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Society secretary said 218 private hospitals in Jaipur have given their written consent to discontinue government schemes.
He said 100 per cent private hospitals from other 21 districts of the state have given written applications for mass de-empanelment of government schemes.

Kapoor also announced that a big rally will be held on Tuesday where a large number of medical workers will participate.
“We are getting support from other states of the country as well,” he added.

NSUI protest at SSC Board Nampally following alleged paper leak

Hyderabad: Several activists of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) were taken into custody when they staged a protest in front of the SSC Board at Nampally following the alleged paper leak issue in Vikarabad on Monday.
In the afternoon, around 30 NSUI activists stormed the SSC Board at Chapel Road Nampally holding flags and attempted to gate crash into the office. The staff shut the gates immediately and did not allow them inside.
The Abids police who were standing in front of the office on bandobast tried hard to stop the activists from scaling the walls and damaging the board. However, the NSUI activists climbed atop the wall and waved party flags demanding resignation of the concerned officials.

The NSUI activists raised slogans against the TRS Government and Minister for IT, K T Rama Rao.
The police took all the activists into custody and shifted them to different police stations.
Following the protest security was beefed up in front of the SSC Board office.

Medical services hit in Rajasthan as doctors protest Right to Health Bill

Jaipur: Medical services were affected in parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday after government doctors and faculty members in medical colleges went on a one-day strike in solidarity with private doctors agitating against the Right to Health Bill.
However, several government doctors attended to patients in OPDs at places like Bharatpur, Alwar and Udaipur.
Emergency services and ICUs were exempted from the strike.
A health department official said in the evening that there was no significant impact of the boycott because the OPDs were handled through alternative arrangements.
There was not much impact of the boycott in Sawai Mansingh (SMS) hospitals, the largest state-run hospitals in Rajasthan. Services remained unaffected in Dausa, the hometown of state Health Minister Parsadi Lal Meena.
In Rajasthan, private doctors are demanding withdrawal of the Bill passed in the state assembly last Tuesday. According to the Bill, every resident of the state will have the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” at any “public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres”.
Iqbal Khan, joint secretary, health department, had on Tuesday issued an order to medical college principals directing them to ensure that medical services in OPD, IPD, ICU, emergency and maternity wards were not affected and to take disciplinary action against the doctors going on leave without approval.
Meena said the strike was “unfair” and “unjustified” and that the doors of the government were always open for any negotiation.

Taking a tough stand, the state government warned of disciplinary action against the government doctors for going on leave without approval. As a result, some of the doctors returned to work after boycotting work for two hours in Alwar, Bharatpur, Udaipur and Dungarpur.
Amid the protest, Bundi collector Ravindra Goswami, who is also an MBBS doctor, attended to a few patients at the district hospital.
The management of OPD in SMS hospital was handled by additional principal, additional superintendent and other doctors engaged in administrative work.

CJI intervenes to end month-long protest of MP lawyers against HC order

Bhopal: The continuous abstention of advocates from all three benches of the Madhya Pradesh High Court to oppose its order for disposing 25 pending cases in three months has hit legal proceedings across the state and promoted Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud to intervene in the matter.
The CJI has taken cognisance of the matter and has called representatives of State Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh for a meeting on March 29.
State Bar Council Chairman Prem Singh Bhadoria, before leaving for New Delhi to meet the CJI, issued a notice appealing to advocates to resume work from Wednesday onward.
“The CJI has taken cognisance of the matter and has called for a discussion on March 29. With the hope of fruitful discussion, the ongoing protest is called off. State Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh appeals to all practicing lawyers to start appearing in the courts from Wednesday onward,” the notice read.
Senior advocate and Bhopal District Bar Association President P.C. Kothari told IANS that a delegation from the State Bar Council has left for New Delhi and representatives of the High Court will also be there in the meeting.
Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Justice R.V. Malimath had issued an order in December last year asking judges to dispose of at least 25 cases pending for years in three months. Demanding withdrawal of the order, lawyers practicing in all district and High Court benches had started abstaining from appearing in the courtrooms.

Opposition parties to continue ‘black’ protest against government

New Delhi: The opposition parties on Monday decided to continue their ‘black’ protest on Tuesday against the BJP-led government over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi and “trampling upon democracy in the country” and a final call will be taken in the morning, sources said.
The meeting of like-minded opposition parties was held at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge who had invited the leaders for a dinner.
Sources said the meeting of like-minded opposition parties decided that the protest of opposition parties will continue and will be held in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament tomorrow with all of the opposition wearing black clothes.
The final call will be taken at the meeting to be held at Kharge’s chamber in Parliament, they said.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was among those present at the meeting of opposition leaders.
Leaders from DMK, NCP, JD-U, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, CPI-M, CPI, AAP, MDMK, TMC, RSP, RJD, National Conference, IUML, Samajwadi Party and JMM were among those present. Shiv Sena (UBT) was not present amid its concerns over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks concerning VD Savarkar.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet later that leaders of 18 parties were present and decided to continue with their campaign against the Modi governmennt “that is destroying democracy and that has subverted all institutions”.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal told ANI that every opposition party is together and they will move forward with the same energy.

“Rahul Gandhi is not worried about the house. Whatever the government of India is doing with the country’s democracy is a bigger issue, that is what he told. Every Opposition party is together, we had a cordial discussion and we will move forward with the same energy,” he said.
Opposition members took out a march in the morning wearing black attire or bands in Parliament premises as part of their protest.
Days after his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi was sent notice by the Lok Sabha House Committee to vacate his official bungalow.
Congress leader Harish Rawat said they were not surprised that notice has been given to vacate the bungalow.
“Since Rahul Gandhi questioned the PM regarding the Adani issue, the government is trying to show that they will silence the voice that disagrees with them,” he said.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said the notice shows “BJP’s hatred towards Rahul Gandhi”.
“For a period of 30 days after the notice is served, one can rightfully continue to stay in the same house. After the 30-day time period, one can continue to stay in the same house by paying rent at market rates. Rahul Gandhi comes under ‘Z’ plus security category,” he said.
Kharge earlier hit out at the Centre over the Adani issue and Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as Lok Sabha MP and said that the opposition leaders are wearing black attire or black bands to show that democracy is being trampled in the country.
Kharge alleged that the Centre used the probe agencies to bend those who did not bow before the government.
Congress and its allies staged protests in some other parts of the country against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as MP from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case by a Surat court.
Indian Youth Congress workers were detained in Delhi after they protested over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as an MP.
Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha, a day after a Surat court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his ‘Modi surname’ remark.
Opposition parties have been pressing for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Adani issue and the second part of the budget session has seen regular disruptions. (ANI)

Congress activists stage protest in Delhi against Rahul’s disqualification, detained

New Delhi: Scores of Indian Youth Congress activists staged a protest at the Jantar Mantar here on Monday against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha and were detained when they tried to march towards Parliament.
Indian Youth Congress activists from across the country gathered here to show solidarity with Gandhi and criticised the central government for “silencing” the voices of the democratic opposition.
Carrying IYC flags and “Satyameva Jayate” placards, the protesters demanded justice for Gandhi.
A senior police officer said around 15 Congress workers, including senior leaders and IYC president Srinivas BV, were detained and taken to Mandir Marg police station from where they were released after a few hours.
Addressing the protesters, Srinivas BV said the dictatorship and mute-system of the Modi government has weakened the foundation of democracy in the country.
Youth Congress workers will continue to fight against this ‘Modishahi’ and will win. No matter how many difficulties come, it cannot deter our spirits, he said.
“Rahul Gandhi ji is not fighting for himself but for the country and countrymen. Why is the whole central government, ministers and MPs trying to save one man Adani. Thousands of crores are in their shell companies but investigation is not being done, why?
“If Adani earns Rs 12 lakh crore in just two and a half years, then it is necessary to ask – where did this money come from? Who gave this money? Rahul Gandhi ji is fighting for the people of this country, for the women, for the youth. Fighting against unemployment and inflation and will continue to fight,” he said.

“The Centre has shown that no one can speak or question the Modi government. Rahul ji raised questions about Adani…so they attempted to silence him by disqualifying him,” said Vikram, one of the protesters.
“Rahul Gandhi is fearless and will continue to question the government over their wrong deeds,” he added.
The protesters, including Srinivas BV, were detained when they tried to march towards Parliament.
“Several protesters have been detained and taken to Mandir Marg police station. They were allowed only to protest at Jantar Mantar but when they climbed over the multi-layered barricades to head towards Parliament, they were detained at the spot,” a senior police officer said.
Gandhi, 52, was disqualified from Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will prevent Gandhi, a four-time MP, from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction.
